Fraughan Sunday Ireland: Glendalough Distillery Berry Collins Recipe & Wild Blueberry Tradition

Published

Have you ever heard of a tradition where people climbed hills not for views, but to gather wild berries and celebrate the changing seasons? Fraughan Sunday is one of Ireland’s oldest yet lesser-known customs, deeply rooted in nature and heritage. Once a day of foraging, community, and even romance, this unique ritual is now being rediscovered in a modern way. With a renewed focus on sustainability and authentic flavours, traditions like Fraughan Sunday are gaining attention again—bringing the past into the present through craft, culture, and taste.

Here’s everything you need to know about this unique Irish tradition:

Celebrated on Sunday, 26th July 2026, Fraughan Sunday (pronounced frockin) marks the beginning of the ancient harvest festival, Lúnasa, when people traditionally went in search of wild fraughans (wild blueberries). “Fraughan” comes from the Irish word for heather, as fraughans like to grow where heather thrives, in acidic soil. They are the ancestor of the modern blueberry and are nutritious, being high in antioxidants and vitamins.

At Glendalough Distillery, the tradition never really stopped. Every summer, the distillery’s full-time forager, Geraldine Kavanagh, heads into the Wicklow Mountains to hand-pick fraughans for use in Glendalough Distillery’s Gin, as their more complex flavour sets them apart from store-bought berries. Geraldine picks entirely by hand, a slower method she prefers because hand-picking naturally drops some berries back onto the mountainside, helping the plants regenerate while leaving plenty of fruit behind for the deer, birds, and other wildlife that rely on them.

For anyone picking their own this summer, use Glendalough Wild Botanical Gin (€45.00).

Anti-Social Media Trend: Why U16 Social Media Bans Are Reshaping Digital Habits

Published

on

anti social media trend social media addiction

The anti-social media trend is gaining momentum as concerns over screen time, online safety, and mental health reshape how people use digital platforms. With growing discussions around banning social media for under-16s, more users are embracing digital detoxes and mindful online habits.

The conversation around the anti-social media trend is growing rapidly, especially as concerns about online safety, screen time, and mental wellbeing continue to rise. This shift reflects a move toward more mindful digital habits, with many users prioritising real-life connections over constant online engagement. At the same time, debates around banning social media for under-16s are gaining global attention.

The Evolution of Social Media and Its Impact

Since the launch of early platforms like MySpace in 2003, social media has become a central part of daily life, offering benefits such as global connectivity, self-expression, and entertainment. However, its downsides are increasingly recognised — including excessive screen time, mental health challenges, addictive scrolling, and reduced face-to-face interaction.

Australia became the first country to introduce a social media ban for users under 16, with other regions like the EU exploring similar regulations to protect younger audiences from harmful algorithms and online risks. These developments have further fuelled the anti-social media trend across different age groups.

The Rise of Digital Detox and Mindful Tech Use

As a result, digital detox practices are becoming more popular. Many people are choosing to deactivate accounts, delete apps, or take extended breaks from social platforms. This is particularly common among younger users seeking relief from the pressure of constant connectivity.

For others, the focus is not on completely quitting social media but on using it more intentionally. This includes limiting app usage, turning off notifications, setting time boundaries, and making profiles more private. The goal is to build a healthier relationship with technology rather than disconnect entirely.

Whether it’s scrolling through TikTok, sharing updates on Instagram, or messaging on Snapchat, social media remains deeply embedded in everyday life. However, as the anti-social media trend continues to grow, more users are expected to adopt mindful habits and rethink their digital behavior.

Remembering Sam Neill: New Zealand Winegrowers Honour His Legacy

Published

on

Sam Neill’s legacy in the New Zealand wine industry is as remarkable as his film career. As the founder of Two Paddocks and a passionate advocate for Central Otago Pinot Noir, he played a defining role in elevating New Zealand wine on the global stage. His New Zealand wine legacy continues to influence the industry today.

New Zealand Winegrowers have expressed deep sadness following the passing of Sam Neill, remembering him not only as a celebrated Kiwi film icon but also as a key figure in the country’s wine industry.

Over several decades, Neill became a passionate ambassador for New Zealand wine. After acquiring his first vineyard in Central Otago in 1991, he went on to establish Two Paddocks in 1993. What began as a personal pursuit to share exceptional Pinot Noir evolved into one of the nation’s most respected wine labels, helping bring international attention to New Zealand’s wine regions and people.

Recently, Neill was honoured as a Fellow of New Zealand Winegrowers – a recognition reserved for individuals whose leadership and dedication have significantly shaped the industry. His contribution extended far beyond winemaking, as he used his global profile to champion New Zealand wine with authenticity and warmth.

While his film career will continue to inspire audiences worldwide, his influence on wine culture remains equally lasting. Neill believed that great wine is best enjoyed in good company – a philosophy that lives on through his legacy.

Our daily workwear reports suggest one piece of work-appropriate attire in a range of prices.

There have been at least three separate occasions this summer when I have admired something another woman is wearing, and when I ask where she purchased it, she has lowered her voice and whispered, “Walmart.” One of the perks of middle age is that I feel no shame in buying my clothes at the same place I buy my groceries and garden supplies, so I hustled over to my local Wally World to grab this cardigan after seeing it on a friend.

The fabric is soft, the color is vibrant, and the fit is perfect. I’ve washed it in a lingerie bag just to avoid snagging the fabric, but so far it’s held up beautifully. I’m currently wearing it with black trousers and a white tee for an easy business casual look.

The sweater is $17.98 at Walmart and comes in sizes XS-4X.

16 Dresses for the High Summer Event

Outfit Details: Missoni Dress (more sizes here), Loro Piana Bag (coming soon, similar here), Sherman Field Necklace, Irene Neuwirth Earrings, Ferragamo Heels

Late July has a funny way of making summer feel like it’s fully arrived and slightly numbered all at once. The days still feel long. Dinner’s still outside. And yet my calendar has already started filling with the first signs of fall. That’s usually when I start reaching for the dresses that feel the most like summer: the ones with color that can stand up to a garden in full bloom, a neckline made for warm nights, a pattern that matches the vibrant energy of summer’s best days.

Saturated maxis, printed halters, draped jersey, border prints, pieces with enough presence to carry dinner or one more trip before the season turns. All of it with that vivid, memorable feeling that makes late-summer plans even more worth dressing for.

We’re not back to the days of “statement necklaces for work,” but we are slowly going back to more substantial jewelry — and I am here for it. This beaded necklace from Cuyana is a great example — it isn’t a wispy gold necklace but a significant piece of jewelry.

They show it with a strapless gown and it looks lovely, but I also think it would look great peeking out of a crisp white blouse or atop a neutral lady jacket.

The necklace is $398, at Cuyana.

There was just a NYT story about how “zone of genius” is a new popular phrase that seems to be everywhere now. The basic idea: it’s the intersection of what you’re exceptionally good at and what energizes you. Gwyneth Paltrow’s stylist “zone of genius” is the red carpet; for the author of The Big Leap (the first to use the term) it meant that he “cut out work that he performed with mere competence to focus more fully on writing, which he is both good at and loves to do.” Considering our day and age, the headline offered a not so subtle push: Step Into the ‘Zone of Genius’ (Before AI Takes Your Job). (Here’s a gift link to the full article.)

One thing in the comments section jumped out at me though — she noted that she has done exercises to “try to suss out what I am good at and like to do.” Which, same… in fact, we’ve even talked about personality tests that can be useful to your career, as well as how to be mindful of which parts of your job you actually like. But it’s been a long time!

So let’s discuss: Do you know your zone of genius? How did you figure it out? Have any personality tests, strengths assessments, exercises, coaches, or career experiences helped you identify what you’re uniquely good at — or is this just another buzzword for something we’ve always called “playing to your strengths”?
