Forty thousand tourists flee France’s millionaire peninsula inferno: Tourists describe ‘enormous’ flames during escape from burning peninsula after being woken in the night with emergency texts

More than 40,000 people have fled from a millionaire’s holiday paradise in France with British tourists caught up in an ‘apocalyptic’ wildfire.

Mass evacuations have been taking place throughout the day – including by boat – from Cap Ferret in southwestern France, where wildfires have burnt through thousands of hectares of forest and destroyed luxury villas.

The fires, which began on Tuesday in Saumos, Gironde, have burned for days, with 10,000 hectares (almost 25,000 acres) of land being consumed by the flames.

A 90-minute drive from Bordeaux, the string of fishing villages is a popular destination for Paris’ elite, often compared to the Hamptons in America.

But now, distressed tourists are anxiously fleeing the beloved getaway either on boats or by the only road linking the area with the mainland.

Ross Fitzsimmons and wife Natasha from Hampton in south west London were forced to leave their holiday villa in the village of Claouey on Thursday, when forest fires surged towards them as they had breakfast.

Mr Fitzsimmons, 70, who runs a bespoke picture framing business, had arrived last Saturday with his wife and their two children, meeting his sister and her husband and two children who had flown in from Dublin.

They had originally planned to stay a week but were forced instead to drive to Bordeaux.

Mr Fitzsimmons said: ‘It’s absolutely heartbreaking because the whole Cap Ferret peninsula is such a special place, the smell of the pine, the pristine beaches, the pretty villages by the bay, but to see the forests being destroyed by a wildfire 19 times larger than Richmond Park is devastating.

‘The region is nicknamed the Hamptons of France but it doesn’t do it justice, as it’s far less pretentious and much more beautiful.’

In southwest France, authorities sent boats to help the evacuation of around 63,000 people, many of them tourists, as two major, separate fires threatened homes and campsites.

Around 40,000 have been forced to flee from the Cap Ferret peninsula – which has the Atlantic on one side and the Bay of Arcachon on the other – while 23,000 were evacuated from Biscarrosse, 25 miles to the south.

Mr Fitzsimmons described how he could see the blaze around 12 miles away on Wednesday night from his local beach.

‘At that point we weren’t concerned all that much because we were here in 2022, and they had wildfires then. [They] had dug trenches and built fire breaks to help contain future outbreaks.

‘But by the following morning, smoke had replaced the clouds and ash was falling from the sky as we ate breakfast. We were getting increasingly nervous.’

‘It was clear that the fire was spreading and that we probably needed to move fast as there’s only one main road in and out of the peninsula, which was obviously going to close if the fire got worse.’

As the family was anxiously packing, they heard an official on a megaphone ‘driving around the village’, warning people to evacuate.

‘We got out about 4pm yesterday in our hire cars and the whole village was deserted. All the shops were closed and there was hardly a soul around. We’d hired bikes but the hire shop was shut so we left them chained up outside.

‘There were gendarmes and other emergency workers lining much of the road out of the peninsula, it was eerie.’

They had planned to stay in Claouey, on the shore of Arcachon Bay, until Saturday before moving onto Bordeaux but were forced to leave the area as soon as was possible.

‘We’ve since seen people having to flee on boat in dramatic fashion and it’s just awful. The locals are laid back and lovely and the forests, the beaches and villages are simply stunning.

‘I hope they contain these fires as soon as possible. The Cap Ferret peninsula is a really special place for us, we’ve been several times over the years and absolutely adore the place,’ he said.

‘A total of 80 homes have burnt, around 50 of which have been completely destroyed,’ French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez earlier told reporters.

Residents have described the inferno as ‘mega-fire’ and ‘apocalyptic’, while French President Emmanuel Macron has requested urgent help from the European Union as the country’s growing battle against wildfires intensifies.

‘It breaks my heart. Because it’s such a pleasant place to live, seeing it go up in smoke is truly sad,’ said family caregiver Corinne Paillaube.

‘It’s totally apocalyptic,’ said Ambre Dubos, from the nearby Landes region.

‘France has requested the activation of the European Union’s civil protection mechanism. We will soon be able to count on reinforcements from two Croatian Canadair aircraft, two Portuguese Air Tractor planes, as well as two heavy Black Hawk helicopters from the Czech Republic and Slovakia,’ wrote Macron on X on Friday.

Sophie Brocas, the prefect for the Nouvelle Aquitaine region, ordered the ‘final phase’ of the peninsula evacuation early on Friday morning.

People are being told to leave via the main D106 road towards Bordeaux while vessels were being made available for others between 7am and 10am local time (6am BST and 9am BST) from four piers.

Aircraft from Croatia, Portugal, the Czech Republic and Slovakia are on their way to assist in the emergency, which the local prefect has described as an ‘XXL fire’.

The Cap Ferret peninsula has a year-round population of just under 8,000 but that can swell by 10 times that number in peak summer season.

A firefighter was injured after a gas cylinder exploded in a burning house. Shocking footage shows the moment a reporter at the scene reacted to the blast.

Headmaster David Morton, 53, from Gloucester had been on holiday with his wife and sons when they received an emergency text alert overnight on Thursday telling them to evacuate.

They were staying in a house in Petit Piquey, along the peninsula, when they were jolted awake at 3am local time (1am GMT) by emergency texts and an alert on the property’s landline.

‘We got in our car, packed everything up as quickly as we could… and then set off and joined a very long, slow-moving queue of traffic,’ he told the BBC.

‘Everyone was driving with their lights on, driving very slowly – there was lots of fire service people, ambulances, police on the other side of the road controlling things and we could see several fires in the distance as we drove.’

As they drove past the blaze near Lège, Mr Morton described the inferno as ‘enormous’.

‘You could see the whole forest was on fire and that really brought it home what a major fire it was.’

He said the evacuation was ‘well-controlled’ with people being ‘very respectful and sensible’.

‘It’s different from seeing it on the television… seeing it blazing out of control despite hundreds and hundreds of firemen and women helping.’

Some 20,000 people within the Gironde region had already been evacuated on Thursday, many of whom were visitors to campsites on the peninsula.

Patrick Martineau, a 69-year-old resident of Le Porge, south of Bordeaux, said: ‘The gendarmes came and knocked on every door, the fire was about 500 metres away – we grabbed some things and left.’

Further down the Atlantic coast, around the town of Biscarrosse in France’s Landes region, another major blaze that began on Thursday afternoon has triggered the evacuations of more than 23,000 people.

‘From our home, we had a view of the fires … We could see the clouds becoming darker and darker,’ said Yoan Urien, who left late on Thursday after police told everyone in his neighbourhood in the town of Biscarrosse to leave.

‘I was able to find somewhere to take shelter with my pets, but … it’s quite a shock,’ the 26-year-old told Reuters.

About 18,000 people in Biscarrosse and 5,000 in Parentis-en-Born had to flee from their homes, campsites, a nursing home and a summer camp.

Videos taken in Biscarrosse captured scenes of chaos, showing several cars rushing down roads to get away from nearing flames.

Separate footage showed horses frantically running down a street as a huge black cloud of smoke engulfed the town.

Minister of the Interior Laurent Nuñez said on Friday that the fire in Biscarrosse is ‘difficult to control’, adding that around 100 homes had been burned or damaged by the flames.

It comes as the Landes prefect, Gilles Clavreul, expressed concern due to the fire’s ‘exceptional intensity’, noting that the blaze had affected industrial areas, commercial zones and homes.

Some 550 firefighters were battling the Biscarrosse fire on Friday and received support from two Canadair water bombers.

Firefighters have also resorted to using bulldozers to ‘create lines of defence’, according to the local municipality.

Meanwhile, residents of a Biscarrosse care home have been evacuated to Dax.

The town’s mayor Julien Dubois on Friday welcomed evacuees in a Facebook post, saying: ‘As mayor of Dax, I want to tell our neighbours in the northern Landes region that they are not alone.’

The Cap Ferret peninsula, often likened to the upscale Hamptons in the United States, is home to expensive properties where wealthy Parisians and Bordelais come to sip white wine and feast on oysters.

Lège is the only one of the peninsula’s 11 villages that is currently threatened by the fire.

The flames later reached the edge of Lège, forcing the evacuation of several campgrounds and neighbourhoods close to the forest.

Camper Elizabeth Carron said she was having dinner when she saw the flames.

‘The sky turned red. Black and red. Then little by little, we could smell it. There were ashes on the car, on the caravan, on my grandchildren’s little tent. Then two hours later, they advised us to leave.’

France’s southeast was also being hard hit, with dozens of fires flaring up and being fanned by the Mistral wind around the historic village of Cotignac.

Officials said around 25 houses had been destroyed since Tuesday.

Two firefighters died on Tuesday tackling another blaze near Bordeaux airport.

Skies over Le Porge turned orange as smoke rose from charred and crackling pine trees, while helicopters made repeated runs over deserted neighbourhoods.

Fires in 2022 damaged a massive area of the same forest, forcing around 50,000 people to flee.

The authorities said the fire had been contained on its northerly flank but was not yet totally under control further south.

EU crisis management commissioner Hadja Lahbib said Thursday that the bloc was providing three water-bombing planes to France.

In Spain, the government declared a state of emergency in the Madrid region, where more than 10,000 people have been evacuated in recent days.

Emergency services said alert messages had been sent to people in Aldea de Fresno, a town west of Madrid, ordering them to leave.

It is the first time such a measure has been taken due to a wildfire.

The last time Spain declared the same level of emergency alert was during a massive nationwide power blackout last year.

Eighteen firefighting units with specialist troops were working to contain the blaze near the city of Toledo, close to another wildfire that forced the evacuation of several villages on Wednesday.

Hundreds of firefighters and troops were still struggling to contain a much larger wildfire in Guadalajara province, north of Madrid.

In Navaluenga in Avila province, residents wearing masks because of the smoke stood watching firefighting helicopters scoop up water from the town’s river late on Thursday.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said on Friday morning that ‘Spain and neighbouring countries’ were experiencing a ‘dramatic situation’ due to the massive fires that spread simultaneously across western Europe

‘The forest fires are ravaging thousands of hectares and affecting numerous towns and villages,’ the Spanish leader wrote on X on Friday.

He also urged Spaniards to ‘follow the instructions’ of officials.

‘Climate change is what kills, what destroys our villages and our natural and cultural heritage,’ civil protection chief Virginia Barcones told Spanish radio.

She warned some fires become so intense that, despite the deployment of aircraft and ground crews, firefighters stand ‘no chance’.

Barcones said conditions at the Guadalajara blaze were improving but that strong winds and extreme heat remained a danger.

Thousands of emergency workers in Italy battled scores of fires in Sicily and in the Calabria region, where a local official said arsonists had started fires by tying rags soaked in flammable liquid to the tails of stray cats to spread the flames.

Along with the stray cats, investigators found candles and delayed ignition devices

Domenico Costarella, of Calabria’s civil protection agency, said: ‘These animals were released into the fields, running around and spreading the fire.’

The heat has also been blamed for thousands of deaths.

France has been particularly hard hit, with the intense heat pressuring its capacity to handle the situation.

‘Our security forces are engaged in a genuine battle against the wildfires,’ Interior Minister Laurent Nunez said on Thursday evening.

‘The nation stands with you.’ The pressure on fire departments in southwestern France has been increased by another wildfire that began on Thursday afternoon near Biscarrosse, just 25 miles south of Cap Ferret.

That fire, which is still not under control, has devastated 2,500 hectares, the prefect for the Landes area, Gilles Clavreul, said in a statement.

He added that fighting arson would take a ‘shift in mindset… These are inhumane acts. Sadly, men are their own worst enemies’.

One firefighter died after falling ill while battling the flames in Sicily, the interior minister said.

Across Europe, three heatwaves in succession this season have intensified drought, strained water supplies, and left vegetation tinder-dry, helping wildfires scorch more land than the annual average over the past two decades.

How the sacking of two popular coaches at Britain’s smartest tennis club has sparked uproar with allegations of racism and ageism

Published

on

Dr Floyd Williams, believed to be 61, was informed last month that he was no longer welcome to teach at The Queen’s Club

The Queen’s Club in west London is one of the most exclusive private members’ clubs in the world. For a start, inductees are expected to cough up £15,000 before committing themselves to a £2,000 annual subscription. Food, drink and guest passes are extra, of course.

And yet, money alone isn’t enough. For the tennis and rackets club – which boasts 28 outdoor grass courts – closed its 15-year waiting list in 2019.

In other words, this historic sporting club is the preserve of its 4,500 members, who include aristocrats, film stars, CEOs and politicians.

The Prince and Princess of Wales play there, as do the TV presenter Ainsley Harriott, West End star Elaine Paige and the American billionaire investor George Soros.

But now this rarefied enclave is in a spin. For the club – known simply as ‘Queen’s’ after founding patron Queen Victoria – finds itself embroiled in one of the most vicious scandals in its 140-year history following a unilateral decision by the Lawn Tennis Committee to dismiss two of its most beloved tennis coaches.

Dr Floyd Williams, believed to be 61, and Andrej Jankov, 57 – who have both played professional tennis and have coached at Queen’s for a combined 36 years – were informed last month that they were no longer welcome to teach at the club.

Their dismay was matched only by that of the membership – which includes the actor Hugh Grant and Restore UK leader Rupert Lowe MP – who have started a petition to have the pair reinstated.

The rebel members claim that what was presented ‘as a voluntary departure was in fact a dismissal’ and are now demanding the club reverse its decision and commission ‘an independent review of how this decision was taken and communicated’.

Founded in 1886, the 14-acre club in Barons Court, London, was ‘the first multipurpose sports complex ever to be built, anywhere in the world’, according to the club’s own website

The Daily Mail has been shown a damning tranche of email correspondence between Queen’s Club members – including celebrities and captains of industry who the Daily Mail has agreed not to name – and the Head of Lawn Tennis (HOLT), Lee Childs, in which members express their incredulity at the sackings, with some even making accusations of racism and ageism.

‘We as members are astute and powerful enough through our pockets to decide who we wish to play, and be coached by,’ wrote one member. So why is this most historic of London clubs, and its incredibly well-heeled membership, getting hot and bothered over the dismissal of a pair of tennis coaches?

Founded in 1886, the 14-acre club in Barons Court was ‘the first multipurpose sports complex ever to be built, anywhere in the world’, according to the club’s own website.

Today, it is most famous for hosting the grass court Wimbledon ‘curtain-raiser’ tournament, which is currently known as the HSBC Championships. This year the perennial British hopeful Emma Raducanu lost in the women’s final in straight sets to American challenger Amanda Anisimova.

Beyond sport, Queen’s is something of a society hideout. For members are as likely to be seen sipping at a G&T in the historic pavilion or tucking into ‘oven roasted halibut’ at £52 a pop in the restaurant as they are to be caught breaking a sweat on court.

Formerly owned by the sport’s governing body, the Lawn Tennis Association, the membership acquired a 120-year lease on the facility in 2007 for £35million, making it fully member-owned for the first time.

As shareholders in the business, they now understandably feel they have a right to be involved in its everyday governance – including the hiring and firing of staff. ‘I’ve been a member since I was a child,’ declared one gentleman who didn’t wish to be named for fear of jeopardising his priceless membership. ‘The membership has changed since then. Now it’s full of people with an awful lot of money who are used to having things their own way.

‘They think they know best about everything from which champagne to stock behind the bar to headline sponsorship deals.’

This latest contretemps began on May 16 when, according to the minutes of a Lawn Tennis Committee meeting, Mr Childs, confirmed he had begun the annual coaching review and hoped to complete the process by the end of the month.

The minutes go on to explain that ‘the Committee expressed its support for HOLT’s approach designed to enhance the service of coaching provided to Members’.

Following the committee meeting, a letter of termination was sent to both Floyd Williams and Andrej Jankov on June 23 giving them eight weeks’ notice before they would no longer be granted access to the Club. This was later cut down to just four weeks, meaning July 21 was their final day in post. This decision was communicated to members a week later on June 30.

Queen’s does not employ tennis coaches directly but permits roughly a dozen licensed coaches to use the facilities as self-employed sub-contractors under the terms of a Facility Licence Agreement, for which coaches pay the club £650 a month.

It was this agreement which the club terminated with Floyd and Andrej, though – as the pair often worked there five days a week – it is reasonable to equate this with dismissal.

On July 7, coach Andrej wrote to some of his clients to inform them the club had decided to let him go. ‘The reason given was that “my coaching is not good”,’ he explained in one such email seen by the Daily Mail. It should be stressed, however, that neither coach agreed to comment or contribute directly towards this article. The news of the coaches’ imminent departures prompted an outpouring of dissatisfaction from members.

‘I have had many coaching sessions with Floyd and Andrej and can only support their technique of teaching,’ declared one lady who plays competitive tennis for the club. ‘Having come to this game so late in life, they have helped me correct my style and improve my performance. No one could ever say they are not good coaches.’

Another individual wrote that they had been ‘impressed by the exceptional diligence and professionalism of Andrej in making himself available at almost any time when he was not already booked… often agreeing to play with me or my children at barely half a day’s notice’.

Pictured: the gates of Queen's, where this year the perennial British hopeful Emma Raducanu lost in the women’s final in straight sets to American challenger Amanda Anisimova

Pictured: the gates of Queen’s, where this year the perennial British hopeful Emma Raducanu lost in the women’s final in straight sets to American challenger Amanda Anisimova

This was a sentiment echoed by numerous others. One member suggested that Andrej’s professionalism was not always displayed ‘by some other tennis coaches at the club’.

Another common complaint was that the decision had been taken ‘without much consultation’.

One particularly distraught individual said: ‘I feel like shouting from the rooftops, MEMBERS’ VIEWS MATTER.’

The chorus of messages, however, clearly fell on deaf ears.

For on July 17, just four days before the coaches’ notice period was up, the chairman of Queen’s, Alan Giddens, showed no signs of backing down.

‘While it is clear there are lessons to be learnt with regard to the communication with members,’ he wrote in an email to members, ‘the majority of the Board were nevertheless satisfied that the correct decision had been made.’

In another leaked email, club CEO Ross Niland claimed: ‘There are a limit to the number of coaches we can have at the club and the issuances of contracts to coaches are based on Lee’s assessment of the range and quality of the various coaches available.’

Was this a case of the CEO trying to deflect blame onto Head of Lawn Tennis Lee Childs, or could there perhaps be a more sinister explanation?

The actor actor Hugh Grant, pictured, and Restore UK leader Rupert Lowe MP are both members of Queen's

The actor actor Hugh Grant, pictured, and Restore UK leader Rupert Lowe MP are both members of Queen’s

In an incendiary piece of correspondence seen by the Daily Mail, a disturbing new theory was touted. ‘With all the letters of support and confirmation of coaching skills,’ read the email from a member to the management, ‘it is now not unreasonable to come to the conclusion of the strong possibility that other unspeakable reasons are behind their termination…

‘Regrettably one can understand why Floyd, a black, a very highly qualified coach and Andrej a popular LTA Level 4 Eastern European, now strongly feel they are being singled out due to their racial profile.’ Such an allegation is calculated to send shivers up spines in the boardroom of The Queen’s Club. But the member who made it didn’t stop there.

‘One look at the coaching pool at QC and one can see clearly it is NOT a reflection, by any stretch of the imagination, of the racially diverse society in London and it will become considerably less representative with Andrej and Floyd removed.

‘I believe that the unfairness and unjustified terminations, the ignoring of the members’ views, and possible exposure risk of allegations of racial discrimination and associated negative publicity to the club which could have catastrophic consequences to QC by us losing sponsors etc leaves me with no option [but] to bring this to the direct attention of the Board and the Trustees.

‘Queen’s Club cannot be put in a position of having its long tradition tarnished.’

An email from another member even suggested that ‘without evidence of a qualitative assessment process your action appears to have an element of ageism’.

Accusations of racism and ageism were both rebutted in private correspondence. However, The Queen’s Club refused to comment when approached by the Daily Mail.

But could there be one further sting in the tail of this story? For although the coaches were officially self-employed, they may be viewed as direct employees of the club in a court of law should the case go to tribunal.

There is precedent here in the shape of the case of Uber vs Aslam in 2021 in which the Supreme Court ruled that self-employed Uber drivers were in fact ‘workers’ rather than contractors.

Could the same be applied to the two tennis coaches, given that they worked at the club regularly? If so, they could be entitled to compensation and could even sue for unfair dismissal.

The decision to fire the coaches has emerged as something of an unforced error. The question now is whether the pair will be reinstated, or whether The Queen’s Club will be judged, in the case of these two, to have served a double fault.

James Bourne takes step back from McFly tour over ill health

The singer said he will be taking a step back from touring

Busted’s James Bourne has announced in an update into his health that he is “not out of the woods”.

While it remains unknown what illness the singer is suffering from, James revealed he quit his tour with McFly due to poor health.

He previously said he required surgery to extend his life.

Now, he’s now given fans some insight into what he said is a “long story” in an update with fans as he thanked them for their patience, reports The Mirror.

Taking to social media, James wrote: “As I’m taking a break from the gram, I’ll be posting an update soon about what’s going on with my health in my Spotify bio. It’s a long story. Still not out of the woods yet. Thanks for your support and patience.”

James issued a statement previously where he said he needed surgery to extend his life. Writing on his Instagram Stories, he wrote: “I realised it’s been about six months since I posted last.

“I have a plan in place to have a major surgery that should extend my life and hopefully make me well enough to come back to what I love the most which is touring and making music. It really sucks to be out of the game. But there is hope!”

James shocked his fans when he announced he’d be stepping down from the McFly Vs Busted tour last year owing to his poor health. He said he would miss being there but had to put his health first.

“The VS tour kicks off tomorrow night in Birmingham and as excited as l’ve been all year for this tour to begin, I’m really sorry to say that over the last 8 days it has become clear that I am not in good enough health to play these shows,” he said at the time.

“There’s a lot of information I still don’t have about my condition but my bandmates, management and I are unanimous in deciding that I should focus on the medical stuff for now. I really hope I can be in a position to come back further down the line. It’s still going to. be an amazing show and I will miss being there! See you all as soon as possible.”

James’ younger brother Chris instead joined the band onstage, with his bandmates regularly updating fans about James. Matt Willis said on stage: “Okay, you may have noticed our best friend is not here tonight. James Bourne is really f***ing sick and we love him and we miss him. This is the first show we’ve ever played without him and it’s really weird. But we’re gonna do the best we can.”

He also added that it had “happened f***ing fast”, before adding “health is wealth” as he told fans to send James their well wishes.

Christopher Nolan Admits Directing A Rom-Com Is A ‘Terrifying’ Thought

Christopher Nolan Admits Directing A Rom-Com Is A 'Terrifying' Thought

Still, the director has insisted that he’s more in his comfort zone doing something as strenuous as his latest big-screen epic than he would be something seemingly more straightforward, like a traditional romantic comedy.

During a new interview on The Tonight Show about just how much his latest film put him through his paces, host Jimmy Fallon joked to Nolan: “Did you ever think to yourself, ‘man, next movie I want to do an easy one?’. How about a Christopher Nolan rom-com?”

“I think doing a rom-com would be incredibly difficult,” the Oscar winner responded. “I love watching those movies, but I think comedy, people who direct comedy, people who do comedy, I think that’s one of the hardest things in the world – to make people laugh that way.”

He explained: “You know, if I show [one of my films] to people and maybe they don’t respond to bits of it, I’m like, ‘ah, they don’t get it’. There’s no hiding behind that when you do comedy.”

“I would be terrified of doing anything like that,” he insisted.

Over the years, Nolan has tried his hand at a range of genres, including the sci-fi offering Interstellar, his superhero Dark Knight trilogy, the war movie Dunkirk and the psychological thrillers Memento, Insomnia and The Prestige.

In 2023, he unveiled the historical biopic Oppenheimer, which was lauded by critics, made almost a billion dollars at the box office and picked up a string of prizes at the Oscars including Best Picture, Best Director and acting prizes for cast members Cillian Murphy and Robert Downey Jr.

His latest offering is similarly star-studded, led by Matt Damon alongside the likes of Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Zendaya and Lupita Nyong’o.

The Odyssey is in cinemas now.

Selena Gomez showed off her incredible swimsuit body in Italy with husband Benny Blanco this week, as she continued her 34th birthday celebrations.

The singer, who wed Blanco in a star-studded ceremony last September, slipped into a skimpy thong bikini – just days after she posted pictures of the couple passionately kissing.

In one selfie, Gomez showed off her cleavage in a white one-piece, and in another full length shot, she gave viewers an ample view of her curvy figure in a blue bikini.

Wearing the same tiny blue bikini, Gomez was also seen posing with her backside to the camera.

Gomez’s social media carousel also included photos of her sunbathing on a yacht as her hair fell to her bare shoulders in soft curls.

There were plenty of pictures of her hugging her man as well as they lounged in the sun, dined and did some sightseeing in the picturesque city.

On Wednesday, which was her actual birthday, Gomez posted two snaps of her blowing out the candles on her birthday cake with the cityscape glowing in the late afternoon sunshine behind her.

Ever the romantic, Blanco shared more photos of the birthday girl, writing in the caption: ‘My beautiful wife… i’ll carry u wherever u wanna go forever… happy birthday my love.’

‘I love you,’ she wrote back in the comments.

The loved-up couple dined at Trattoria Della Santa in Bologna the day before her special day, and restaurant owner Riccardo Lelli has now heaped praise on the celebrity duo.

‘They were absolutely amazing, very lovely, good-hearted people,’ he told People.

Waitress Saria Ahmed also lavished praise on the high-profile couple.

‘It was just a great experience,’ she said.

Despite this, Saria did recall one slightly awkward and embarrassing moment.

‘I actually did a little faux pas with them,’ she revealed. ‘They asked for a couple of glasses of prosecco, and they asked for another round, and I recommended them the bottle because it was more convenient.

‘And while I was going to get it, I was like, “What did I just say to them? Why did I say this?” as if they need something more economic. So, I was just laughing with myself… It’s my job.’

Gomez and the record producer wed in September 2025 in Santa Barbara, California.

Their lavish wedding and reception at the Sea Crest Nursery took place under a private tent with 170 guests including Taylor Swift, Ed Sheeran, Paris Hilton, SZA and Finneas.

The star has already achieved significant success as a singer and as an actress, but she has no intention of slowing down in the coming years.

‘I want to keep evolving and getting better in every area of my life. And I want to experience everything, so it’s important for me to keep myself in check,’ she told Allure.

‘I’m so stoked that when an emotion pops up, I’m able to acknowledge it and be a part of it, then let it go.’

Gomez has also reaped the rewards with her Rare Beauty make-up brand, with the company reported to be worth more than $1 billion.

However, Gomez is always open to new ideas and business ventures.

‘I am going to be in this moment. And who knows, in a couple years I could be done, and that’s fine. I just need to make sure that while I’m here, I do the best I can,’ she added.

Aries

March 21 to April 20

There are major changes unfolding for us all, and today’s link between the planet of idealism and the planet of evolution brings this into focus. Yet just as Neptune and Pluto align, so your ruler, Mars, and the Moon forge a testing opposition. This could see some frustration creep in, but particularly if you are ready for big changes and someone close is simply not.

Today’s celestial guidance for Aries

Taurus

April 21 to May 21

That side of you that likes to work through things in a way that gets lasting results could be challenged. Tension is in the air, whether this comes from you or someone you interact with. Anticipate that you and they might not see things the same way. Then, before you even engage with the other person, you’re already accepting that this is possible, but don’t need to react.

Today’s planetary forecast for Taurus

Gemini

May 22 to June 21

Mars in your sign has given you a tremendous amount of drive, and you may have felt physically recharged by his presence. Even if you’re not usually outspoken or active, the chances are you have been more so of late. Just know that those you encounter today may not be going at the same speed. Rather like driving up behind an ambling driver, this can be exasperating.

Cancer

June 22 to July 23

The Moon is your guide planet, and so you feel her interactions with other planets keenly. Today, she goes face-to-face with the strident Mars but also squares off with Venus. This can see an issue which has been lingering in the depths burst into the open. What can rile is that, despite your best efforts to be diplomatic and understanding, someone can still be dismissive.

Leo

July 24 to August 23

If you are travelling anywhere, it may be best to take the scenic option. If you are using busy routes or transport links, just anticipate that people may seem less tolerant. That said, you may decide to treat yourself or someone close to something cool. Your generosity is a big part of your nature, and over the next year that will show up more clearly, as it does today.

Virgo

August 24 to September 23

Venus in your sign is very much in the celestial mix today, with both Mars and the Moon. This combination could see your pragmatism and appreciation for keeping things steady tested by someone’s overbearing or demanding attitude, which could rankle. However, it may be better not to react, but instead to starve this situation of attention and turn the other cheek.

Libra

September 24 to October 23

A conversation could be brusque. Generally, you prefer, even if superficially, for things to be kept on an even keel and pleasant. Unfortunately, someone you encounter may not share your mantra, and issues may arise that surprise or amaze. These are likely to be old strands, but the angles being fired at you could seem so unrelated to reality that they’re hard to hear or relate to.

Scorpio

October 24 to November 22

Your traditional ruler, Mars, can see you blunt and, at times, impatient. This can see you tell it how it is, and whilst others can find your rasping, to-the-point take testing, you don’t easily compromise. Today, you may have a choice of delivering an unvarnished truth or using diplomatic tact. If you choose the peaceful route, try to ignore someone’s imperfections.

Sagittarius

November 23 to December 21

The Moon in your sign shows up your need to be in touch with your personal needs. Mars in opposition suggests you might not hold back from telling someone that this is the priority. Be sure of who you apply this to and how. At work in particular, a line manager or colleague could take issue with your single-mindedness. Be careful about who you choose to take on.

Capricorn

December 22 to January 21

It can be one of those days when things get prickly. Three planets interact, but each has its own celestial agenda. A side of you that may want a bit more personal space and freedom is challenged by another that needs to take care of obligations. This can create resentment. And the Moon in the tenderest of sectors sees things get into your psyche more easily.

Aquarius

January 22 to February 19

You often spot trends in advance, be it in music, fashion, tech, food or design. As Pluto in your sign aligns with the mysterious but inspirational Neptune, this talent can show up handsomely, and you can see how you have been ahead of the curve. However, at a more human level, you could have a tussle with a friend about how you spend your free time today.

Zelensky denies bizarre claim he took cocaine with Macron in interview with far-right MAGA influencer

Zelensky denies bizarre claim he took cocaine with Macron in interview with far-right MAGA influencer

Volodymyr Zelensky has denied taking cocaine with French president Emmanuel Macron in a bizarre interview with an American far-right MAGA influencer.

Laura Loomer, a close ally of Donald Trump and an ardent conspiracy theorist, travelled to meet the Ukrainian president and witness the impact of the war in Kyiv, after spending the last three years downplaying Russia’s invasion.

Ms Loomer, who has two million followers on X, had previously labelled Ukraine a “country full of Nazi apologists” and had claimed that they were being led “by a Jihadi apologist”.

However, the hardline right-wing activist has changed her stance in recent months and met with Mr Zelensky at the Marrinsky Palace, telling him: “I’ve come to realise that I was bamboozled by Russian propaganda and I came to believe a lot of untrue things about Ukraine.”

Rumours about Mr Zelensky taking Class A drugs with Mr Macron were amplified by Tucker Carlson, a fellow figure on America’s right who carried out a sit-down interview with Russian president Vladimir Putin in 2024.

When asked about the story, the Ukrainian leader laughed and replied: “Of course not”.

Ms Loomer’s shifting position on the war in Europe reflects the growing impatience among the Trump administration and Washington over Moscow’s actions and their lack of readiness to negotiate a peace deal.

In response to Russian propaganda of Nazism in his country, Mr Zelensky explained the history of Soviet persecution of Judaism in Ukraine and stressed: “We are not Nazis”.

He also said that he is due to visit Washington next week for the funeral of Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, and is expecting to see Mr Trump.

The relationship between the two leaders has been fraught with tension over the years, resulting in a shouting match in the Oval Office where Mr Zelensky was criticised for not wearing a suit.

However, he told Ms Loomer that now the relationship is “better and really good” since they met in the Vatican last year.

The pair spoke for around 15 minutes inside St Peter’s Basilica ahead of the funeral of Pope Francis.

Mr Zelensky said his relationship improved with the US president after their meeting at the Vatican

“The tone has changed, absolutely,” he told Ms Loomer in response to a question about the shift in dynamic. “We had [a] first changing moment in Rome. It was not a long meeting but I always said it was this historic moment because we changed the relations during 15 to 20 minutes.

“Nobody was around us and I was very happy to hear the president. Let it be between the two of us but it was very good when we calmed down. I was very happy because a lot of life depends on relations.”

As well as speaking to Mr Zelensky, the MAGA influencer also travelled around the city, which included visiting a McDonald’s scarred by shrapnel from a Russian missile strike.

In a video recorded from inside a church, Loomer accused Mr Putin of hypocrisy by portraying Russia as pro-Christian.

“I just don’t think that you should be allowed to say that you’re protecting Christianity if you’re trying to drone strike Jesus Christ,” she said.

Around 141,000 have been evacuated from their homes in the Gironde and Landes departments in south-west France as a large wildfire ravaged swathes of land, the French interior ministry said.

Speaking to French TV channel Tf1, Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez has swept across 140 square kilometres, with 110,000 people fleeing their homes in the Gironde region, and is now heading towards the city of Bordeaux.

“We learned in the middle of the afternoon that, following the wind shift, it had become a large, self-sustaining fire that is extremely difficult to bring under control,” he said.

“It is now moving east, toward the Bordeaux metropolitan area. We are going to reorganise our response so we can fight it from the ground and prevent it from advancing toward Bordeaux.”

Burlesque musical to open at Sunderland Empire after West End delay

Burlesque musical to open at Sunderland Empire after West End delay

Burlesque The Musical, inspired by the 2010 movie starring Christina Aguilera and Cher, was originally scheduled to begin its UK tour in Woking, Surrey, before heading to London’s West End in September.

However, in a turn of events, producers have announced a change of plans due to what they described as “final technical preparations.”

The tour will now launch at Sunderland Empire on 6 August with the Woking dates rescheduled to November 3 to 7.

The schedule changes follow reports regarding the production’s physical sets not being delivered to the Woking venue ahead of the planned opening.

Producers said: “Audiences holding tickets for the original performances will be contacted by their point of sale regarding exchanges or refunds.”

The show’s West End debut has also been postponed until 2027.

On Instagram, the official Burlesque The Musical account said: “All ticket holders will be contacted by The Arts at Marble Arch regarding a full refund.

“We can’t wait to welcome audiences to our Burlesque lounge across the UK from August.

“Unfortunately, this was out of our hands.

“We know you love the show and we love you right back.

“Thank you for all your continued support.”

Producers stressed that the London delay is “absolutely a postponement, not a cancellation.”

They said: “We are already exploring opportunities for a major London return in 2027 and look forward to announcing our future West End home in due course.

“This is a strategic decision designed to ensure the production returns to London exactly as we want it to… With all the fabulosity, concert-like experiential quality and razzle-dazzle that our audiences deserve.”

They also noted that the tour remains “fully financed and on a secure footing.”

Burlesque The Musical is produced by a team including Steven Antin, the writer and director of the original film, alongside Adam Paulden, Jason Haigh-Ellery, Clint Culpepper, and In Fine Company.

Christina Aguilera also serves as a producer.

Set in Los Angeles, Burlesque tells the story of Ali, a small-town girl who rises to stardom in a struggling underground club.

The original film featured a star-studded cast including Aguilera, Cher, Stanley Tucci, and Kristen Bell.

Warning signs that supermarket fish is not actually fresh

Published

Warning signs that supermarket fish is not actually fresh

Brits eat around 167 million portions of fish and chips a year, and that is not counting the other dishes people use fish for when they are at home.

However, you do not want to be wasting money on fish that is not fresh, especially if it is an expensive type of fish.

While you can find some great fish in the supermarkets and at fishmongers, sometimes it might not be as fresh as it looks, but there are ways to check before.

There is an easy way to check if supermarket fish is fresh. (Image: Getty)

How to spot if fish is not fresh while in the supermarket

You might think it is normal for fish to have a strong smell in the supermarket, but a seafood expert says the best quality fish should only have a mild scent.

Julian Klenda from Marine Lobster Now said: “Never assume fish is fresh simply because the colour looks right or the packaging is intact.

“If you are buying from a fish counter, ask to smell it.

“Fresh fish should smell mild and clean, perhaps slightly like the sea, but it should not hit you with a strong fishy, sour, or ammonia-like odour.

“That familiar ‘fishy’ smell is not something shoppers should expect from genuinely fresh fish.

“If the smell makes you pull away, trust that reaction and choose something else.”

As fish gets worse, it will develop an increasingly strong and unpleasant smell but will still look fine on the outside.

If you can smell sourness, rancid notes, or an ammonia-like smell, you should avoid buying the fish.

You should check the fish is properly sealed and within its use-by date.

You can also check the condition of the packaging and look closely at the fish for any excess liquid, discolouration, or if it is drying out.

Julian added: “Smell is the fastest check when you have access to the fish, but it should not be the only one.

“Fresh fillets should generally look moist and have firm flesh rather than appearing dry, dull, or mushy.

“If you are buying a whole fish, look for clear, bright eyes and red gills rather than cloudy eyes or brownish gills.

“For shellfish meat such as lobster, scallops, or prawns, look for a clear, pearl-like appearance and little to no odour.

“Any combination of a strong smell, unusual colour, and soft texture should be treated as a warning.”

Will you be using this trick to check fish next time you go shopping? Let us know in the comments.
