Pimlico Plumbers founder Charlie Mullins has announced he will stand as a Reform UK councillor following a personal request from Nigel Farage, despite having left the UK six months ago.

Speaking to GB News, Mullins said he would return to Britain if necessary, claiming the country is “going down the pan rapidly” under Labour.

“All of a sudden, I’ve been asked by Nigel Farage to run as a candidate for a councillor, and that appeals to me a lot, so I’ve agreed to do it and go for it,” Mullins told GB News.

The businessman, who relocated abroad after Labour’s victory, said he made his decision to leave the UK as soon as the party took office but maintains business interests and family connections in Britain.

Mullins indicated he would prefer to stand in Lambeth, citing his deep connections to the area.

“Hopefully I’ll stand in the Lambeth area, it’s where I have been brought up and worked for many years,” he said. “I understand the people, I understand the area, I know what’s wrong now.”

The businessman also mentioned Westminster, where he currently maintains a residence, as an alternative option, but admitted that “common sense tells me to work with the people that I understand better”.

When pressed by host Martin Daubney on why he wants to stand for Reform UK, Mullins took aim at Keir Starmer and Labour, claiming that the country is “going down rapidly” under his Government.

Mullins told GB News: “It’s really about getting Reform into Government and getting Labour out. I still have family here, I still have a business here, and things are going down in the pan rapidly now. And if this is the first step to to remove Labour, then I’m up for it.

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:

“I don’t think they’re fit to be in office, they’re falling apart, and everything’s going wrong with it. And Rachel Reeves, you wouldn’t put her in charge of anything, would you? Look what she has done.”

He added: “I was trying to tell Starmer at the time, you don’t penalise successful people and drive them out. I believe that Reform led by Nigel Farage will change things dramatically, it will literally change it, and this country will be booming again, and I want to be part of that.

“I’ve got a family, children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and I want them to all live in a better place, so I’m up for it.”

Despite joining Reform UK, Mullins acknowledged his continued disagreement with Farage over Brexit, and admitted he will continue to be a “remainer”.

“The only thing me and Nigel will disagree on is Brexit,” he told GB News. “I still don’t think that we’re better off for it, but that’s where we are.”

The announcement sparked controversy within Reform UK, with the party’s former deputy leader Ben Habib criticising the recruitment of an “arch-Remainer” as a candidate.

“The Brexit Party recruiting Remainers,” Habib jibed on social media.

Gawain Towler, Reform UK’s former communications chief and Farage ally, defended the decision, stating: “The Brexit Party always had Remainers. It was and is about Democracy.”
