Glasgow’s scaled back Commonwealth Games will be held between 23 July and 2 August, it has been revealed.

Dates for the 11-day event were confirmed in a report to Glasgow City Council.

The Scottish government backed plans for the city to step in and host the games after the Australian state of Victoria pulled out due to rising costs.

The 2026 Commonwealth Games will begin exactly 12 years after those held in Glasgow in 2014.

The event, which will be much smaller than previous games, will see 10 sports take place across four venues in the city.

The report also confirms that the four venues used during the event will be the Emirates Arena, Tollcross International Swimming Centre, the Scottish Events Campus and Scotstoun stadium.

There will be no road-based events, such as a cycling road race or time trials, according to the report.

There will be no new athletes’ village built for the Games, with competitors and officials staying in “existing accommodation across the city”.

The report adds, while the model remains in development, it is expected “a 10-sport programme, fully integrating para competitions” will include “athletics and swimming as mandatory sports”.

Athletics and swimming were made compulsory sports by the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) in 2021.

Commonwealth Games Scotland (CGS) and CGF are finalising the remaining sports to be announced.

Organisers can choose from a list of 22 other core sports such as cycling and boxing.

The report states: “The concept is based on a significantly reduced budget, timeline and scale of event, therefore the approach and experience will be different to previous Commonwealth Games.”

It adds Victoria agreed to make a compensatory payment of around £190m to the CGF and Commonwealth Games Australia — and there is a “commitment from CGF to meet the entire cost of the Games”.

It was previously confirmed that Commonwealth Games Australia had contributed £2.3m to “enhance the event”.

A Glasgow 2026 programme board has been set up, chaired by the council’s chief executive, to oversee the city’s role in the Games.

It will monitor the “progress of delivery of the city’s operations and functions within the agreed budgets, ensuring a legacy for Glasgow”.

Councillors were asked on Thursday to grant permission for the chief executive and the council’s finance director to “negotiate and conclude all legal and financial agreements associated with the city’s role in hosting of the Games”.

Matheus Nicolau wants to honor late Guilherme ‘Bomba’ with UFC Vegas 99 win: ‘He’s inspired a lot of people’

The MMA community mourned the death of UFC and Bellator veteran Guilherme “Bomba” Vasconcelos on Tuesday, and UFC flyweight Matheus Nicolau wants to honor him at this weekend’s UFC Vegas 99 in Las Vegas, when he faces Asu Almabayev.

Nicolau was born and raised in Belo Horizonte, just like Vasconcelos, and hearing the news of his “devastating” passing while checking in at the host hotel in Las Vegas was a crushing blow.

“He’s not someone I talked to regularly every day or every week, but I liked him very much,” Nicolau said in an interview with MMA Fighting. “He’s a bit older than me and got his [jiu-jitsu] black belt before I did, but we had our roads in MMA at the same time. He was always so nice to me. We have so many friends in common — everybody knows each other in the jiu-jitsu community in Belo Horizonte, and I saw him a month ago at the Worlds Master.

“The news hit me and I was crushed, man. I liked him very much, you know? He was a nice person that helped a lot of people in Belo Horizonte, even unintentionally, just by fighting and being who he is. He’s inspired a lot of people. I’m sure I was not the only one. He will be missed. That news was quite devastating.”

The cause of death has not yet been revealed, but Nicolau felt it was important to highlight the debating around mental health — especially among men.

“This is an alert of how important mental health is,” Nicolau said. “We have to open up with our friends. I even texted a friend of mine, ‘Life is crazy and we don’t talk as much as we’d like but I’m always here, and I love you.’ It’s important that we say that to people we care, just like him. If I had the opportunity to go back and have a word with him I would, you know?

“We can’t neglect that because we all have someone that love us badly, we have someone by our side and someone we can trust, someone we can ask for help. We don’t do that as much, especially men. Sometimes it’s hard for us to open up and ask for help and show our weaknesses. You’re only strong if you can be weak, too. That news was devastating, and it’s an alert for us. And may he rest in peace.”

Nicolau promised to “do my best to honor his work and the friendship we had” by defeating Almabayev at UFC Vegas 99. Nicolau said the match was originally offered for Aug. 24, but ultimately signed for Oct. 19, which gave him plenty of time to adapt to a new life in the United States, training at Team Oyama in Irvine, Calif.

“I don’t like to say I left a comfort zone, because it sounds like I was in a comfort zone before and wasn’t training that hard, but I think it put me in difficulties in every aspect,” Nicolau said. “There’s always a risk in change, and I feel like I’m getting the best out of myself here. I’m taking everything I have to this fight.”

Nicolau was approaching the top of the division after collecting four wins in a row under the UFC banner, including a decision over Manel Kape and a second-round stoppage over Matt Schnell. However, losing back-to-back fights to Brandon Royval and Alex Perez slowed his championship aspirations.

Almabayev, on the other hand, is 3-0 under the UFC banner and 20-2 overall in the sport.

“I’ll beat Asu the way I have to beat him,” Nicolau said. “By submission, by knockout, by points. Grappling him, standing and trading with him, kicking and kneeing him. No matter how, I’ll go after this win at all times — and I’m ready for this. I know I gave my best day after day, and I’m very confident.”

Graham Potter joins Eddie Howe on eight-man list of managers who were NOT interviewed for England job

GRAHAM POTTER has joined Eddie Howe on the list of managers snubbed from the England job.

Former Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel was named as Gareth Southgate‘s permanent successor and will take over from Lee Carsley.

Tuchel, 51, will become the third foreigner to lead the Three Lions as he follows in the footsteps of Sven-Goran Eriksson and Fabio Capello.

Howe revealed that the FA did not approach him to interview for the job.

This is despite ten different candidates being interviewed for the role, including some English managers.

However, one name that was not on that list was former Blues boss Potter.

The Daily Mail have claimed that he was not interviewed for the role.

Potter had been hotly tipped to be in the running for the job following the stellar work he did at Brighton and Hove Albion.

The report also claimed that English managers Sean Dyche, Frank Lampard and Gary O’Neil were also not considered.

This is also extended to Welshman Steve Cooper, Italian Carlo Ancelotti and former Scotland international Russell Martin.

‘I wasn’t contacted about the England job,’ admits Eddie Howe as he gives verdict on Thomas Tuchel appointment

Inside FA’s thrilling chase for Tuchel

THE FA’s path to securing Thomas Tuchel’s signature was not a straightforward one.

They tried to lure Pep Guardiola from Manchester City over the summer.

They even made contact with Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti after deciding to target trophy-laden foreign gaffers.

The FA’s determination to go international was summed up by their decision NOT to interview Newcastle boss Eddie Howe.

Initial talks with Tuchel saw him express a slight interest in replacing Gareth Southgate.

But he was waiting to see what would happen at Manchester United, with Erik ten Hag’s future under the spotlight.

Man Utd owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe eventually decided to stick with Ten Hag – and that opened the door to the FA getting their man.

“They’ve chosen a very good coach, in my opinion.

“He’s very strong tactically and he has proven so throughout his whole career. I wish him the best.”

Speaking in his press conference, Howe insisted that he is focused on his job at Newcastle.

He said: “I was not. There was no contact from the FA. England have to do what is right for them.

“Only they will know the processes they have gone through.

“For me it is about Newcastle. I remain 100 per cent focused to my work, if you drop focus the job becomes impossible.”
