Director Ryan Coogler is basking in the success of his critically acclaimed blockbuster Sinners, which recently broke the record for the most Academy Award nominations, scoring 16 nods at the 98th Oscars. Coogler has methodically climbed the Hollywood ladder after breaking out with the indie film Fruitvale Station around 15 years ago. Before earning a blank check for Sinners, Coogler proved that he was capable of working in the studio space with the film Creed. The movie served as a spin-off to the landmark Rocky franchise and reunited Coogler with his Fruitvale Station star Michael B. Jordan. Both Jordan and Coogler have been nominated at the Oscars for their work on Sinners. Thanks to the horror-thriller’s success, fans seem to be revisiting Creed, which celebrated its 10th anniversary last year.
According to FlixPatrol, the movie returned to the domestic iTunes charts this week, when the leaderboard was topped by the recent animation hit Zootopia 2. Creed followed Jordan’s Adonis Creed, an aspiring boxer who steps into his legendary late father’s shoes with the help of an aging Rocky Balboa, played by Sylvester Stallone. The movie was widely acclaimed, and is now sitting at a “Certified Fresh” 95% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, where the critics’ consensus reads, “Creed brings the Rocky franchise off the mat for a surprisingly effective seventh round that extends the boxer’s saga in interesting new directions while staying true to its classic predecessors’ roots.” It remains the second-highest-rated film of Coogler’s career on Rotten Tomatoes, behind only Sinners, which holds a 97% score.
The Creed Trilogy Has Been Critically and Commercially Successful
Also starring Tessa Thompson, Creed is one of the most successful and well-received franchise reboots of the 21st century, having grossed over $170 million at the worldwide box office against a reported budget of $40 million. Stallone was nominated for an Academy Award in the Best Supporting Actor category for his pathos-filled performance. Jordan returned to star in two sequels, Creed II and Creed III, which made more than $210 million and $270 million at the global box office, respectively. Both sequels received critical acclaim, and Creed III also served as Jordan’s directorial debut. Coogler went on to direct the cultural phenomenon Black Panther, which featured Jordan in a memorable villainous role. He is expected to direct Black Panther 3 next, while Jordan is working on a fourth Creed film as well as a spin-off series.
You can watch Creed at home, and stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
