I’ve stayed in some of the most expensive places in the world… for free. Here’s how I did it and the money-saving hacks you need to use

I was the Travel and Lifestyle Editor at ELLE for more than 30 years, so I know a thing or two about globetrotting in style.

The life of a travel writer may sound glamorous but you still have to keep costs down. When reviewing a remote five-star hotel, for example, your meals might not be included, and you could find yourself living off the welcome bowl of fruit.

Luckily, I did a lot of backpacking before becoming a travel editor, and being resourceful kicks in like muscle memory. I still take a high-low approach to holidays, and I strongly believe in spending on things that make a difference, and not on things that don’t – read on for my tips on how to luxe-up your holiday for less.

LUXEMAXXING

I have been lucky enough to stay in some of the world’s most glamorous hotels – some are worth every penny, others not so much.

If you are going to splurge a good chunk of your pay packet on a night or two, you want to be sure you make the most of every minute. One tip is to stay in an Airbnb for the first few days before switching to somewhere more luxurious for the final day or two.

To really make the most of it, check in early – it doesn’t matter if your room’s not ready, simply ask them to store your bags and head to the pool, beach or spa.

On departure day, see how late you can push the checkout, then ask the front desk to look after your bags till the evening. That way, you get two days for the price of one.

LOCATION, LOCATION

Skip the pricey hotel restaurant and shop around for a more authentic experience.

One of the best apps is Too Good to Go which lists discounted food from local stores, restaurants and supermarkets in 21 countries, not only saving money but giving you an idea of where to shop and eat.

On Google maps use local language terms such as épicerie (France), alimentacion (Spain), una gastronomia (Italy) to find independent stores rather than supermarket chains.

When looking for local restaurants, be specific on social media: ‘where to eat truffles in Istria’, or ‘best pinxtos in San Sebastian’.

To get into town, resort hotels often run free shuttle services but if not, check taxi fares on taxi-calculator.com or bettertaxi.com to make sure you don’t pay over the odds.

BAR CULTURE

In Italy, Spain, France and Portugal it is cheaper, and more authentic, to have your coffee, pastries, tapas and sometimes alcohol at the bar (al banco, a la barra, au comptoir and ao balcão respectively) rather than at a table.

So skip an expensive, sit-down, multi-course dinner and instead, perch on a stool and order a few tapas with a crisp wine spritzer. The different pricing tiers should be listed on menus.

Joani Reid endures ‘rough’ few months after husband arrested on suspicion of spying for China

Published

Daily Record

EXCLUSIVE: The MP for East Kilbride thanked Joe Fagan for standing by her after she voluntarily suspended her Labour membership.

Joani Reid has admitted facing a “rough few months” after her husband was arrested on suspicion of spying for China.

The MP for East Kilbride chose to voluntarily suspend her Labour membership in March after David Taylor was charged with assisting a foreign intelligence service.

Reid, who was never accused of wrongdoing, was readmitted to the party last month following an internal investigation.

She thanked Scottish Labour leadership hopeful Joe Fagan for standing by her during the ordeal.

“I’ve had a rough few months, and politics can go quiet around you when that happens,” she said in a column for the Record.

“But not Joe. He stood by me when there was nothing in it for him. Because he thought it was the right thing to do. That tells me something about his character. He is a decent man. And a kind man.”

Reid is now backing Fagan, a South Scotland MSP elected for the first time in May, to succeed Anas Sarwar as the next Scottish Labour leader.

The MP said: “People hear a great deal from the Scottish political class about language, identity and symbolism. They hear far less that convinces them Scottish Labour understands their lives, respects their values or is interested in where they live.

“Joe understands that because he has never been absorbed into the Holyrood bubble. His politics were formed in East Kilbride and local government. He listens properly, knows his own mind and is comfortable with people who don’t spend their lives talking about politics.

“Local government strips away much of the political theatre, and there is little glamour involved. A care package arrives or somebody goes without. A family gets the keys or stays in temporary accommodation. Folk know who is responsible when something goes wrong, and they’ll tell you between the tills and the car park.

“He takes the same approach to the North Sea. He is the first candidate to say he will fight for Rosebank and Jackdaw until the UK Government approves them. I agree with him, and I would sooner say it now than after more jobs are lost.

“He’ll have more to say on policy in the coming weeks. What I already know is that he understands what Labour should stand for and what it should be doing.”

Taylor was arrested in London in March and has since been released on bail.

Matthew Aplin, 43, and Steve Jones, 68, have also been bailed after being arrested in Wales.

Counter-terrorism police have searched properties where the men were arrested as well as others in Cardiff, East Kilbride and London.

Following Taylor’s arrest, Reid aid she had never been to China, nor spoken on any China-related matters in the House of Commons.

A man accused of orchestrating Tupac Shakur’s killing is on trial

A man accused of orchestrating Tupac Shakur's killing is on trial

LAS VEGAS (AP) — The case of rap icon Tupac Shakur’s killing has been unresolved for decades; now the man charged in his 1996 killing in Las Vegas is going to trial.

Duane “Keffe D” Davis, 63, faces one charge of murder with a deadly weapon with the intent to promote, further or assist a criminal gang in Shakur’s death. Jury selection begins Monday, with the trial scheduled to last about a month.

The trial will bring to a head one of the biggest mysteries in the hip-hop world that gripped the public for decades. Shakur, who also went by the stage names 2Pac and Makaveli, is considered one of the most influential rappers of all time.

Shakur was shot in Las Vegas on Sept. 7, 1996. He was in a black BMW with music mogul Marion “Suge” Knight on their way to Club 662, where Shakur was scheduled to perform, when a white Cadillac pulled up beside them. Gunfire erupted. Shakur, who was in the passenger seat, was shot multiple times and died six days later, while Knight survived.

The case went cold until recent years, when public statements and a tell-all memoir from Davis revived the case. He was a leader of South Side Compton Crips at the time of Shakur’s death. Davis was arrested in 2023 and pleaded not guilty.

Here’s what to know about the trial.

When and where the trial will be held

It will take place in Clark County District Court in Las Vegas, with Judge Carli Kierny presiding over the case.

Jury selection starts Monday. That’s expected to take a few days. Then, the prosecution and defense will give opening statements and witness testimony will begin.

Inside the courtroom, seats for the public will be in short supply, with a daily lottery for a chance to get one. A room on the second floor of the court will be open to the public and will show a live feed of the trial.

The trial likely won’t answer ‘who pulled the trigger’

Prosecutors are not arguing that Davis is the one who pulled the trigger that night, and the trial likely won’t confirm who fired at Shakur. Instead, prosecutors plan to prove that Davis made the calls that led to Shakur’s death and provided the gun used to shoot Shakur.

Davis is the co-author of the memoir “Compton Street Legends,” which describes his exact role in the shooting. The book says that Davis obtained a handgun from an associate and tossed it into the back seat of the Cadillac but did not say who fired the fatal shots.

Orlando “Baby Lane” Anderson, Davis’ nephew, has long been considered the suspect who pulled the trigger, but charges were never brought against him in the killing. He died two years after Shakur’s death in an unrelated gang shootout in Compton, California.

Two others — Deandrae “Freaky” Smith and Terry “Bubble Up” Brown — were in the car with Davis and Anderson, but they have since died as well.

Who is expected to testify

Prosecutors expect to call between 35 and 45 witnesses during the trial, ranging from people who saw Shakur moments before he was shot to people who were in both Shakur and Davis’ orbits at the time.

Their witness list includes former Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman and members of Shakur’s family. However not everyone on the list will necessarily testify. Rather, attorneys may ask potential jurors if they’re familiar with certain names.

Leonard Jefferson, a California resident who pulled up next to the BMW and snapped a photograph, which became the last known photo of Shakur, is expected to testify.

The state is also expected to call Denvonta Lee, who was affiliated with the South Side Crips.

In grand jury testimony, Lee testified that rival gangs, the Crips and Mob Piru, were tied to dueling record labels Death Row Records and Bad Boy Records.

Though he wasn’t there that night, Lee also testified that Anderson didn’t have a clear shot, so Smith took the gun and did the shooting. He also said Davis was in charge and gave the gun to Anderson, who gave it to Smith.

The witness list includes others who previously testified to the grand jury, including Malcolm Greenidge, a friend of Shakur’s who was traveling in his entourage that night. Reggie Wright, who grew up in Compton and did security for Death Row Records, is also expected to testify.

But other witnesses will be new, including a former member of Death Row’s security team and a former member of Mob Piru who was at Club 662 the night Shakur was shot.

Witnesses also include former police officers and detectives, as well as gang experts.

Davis’ defense attorney is expected to call less than a handful of witnesses, including one expert in the area of false confessions and coercive interrogation techniques.

Celebrities could be at the trial

Prosecutors requested to have multiple out-of-state witnesses testify, and it’s unclear who those people are.

One of the witnesses is in prison in California, according to court records. Knight is serving a 28-year prison sentence in California for running over and killing a Compton businessman outside a burger stand in January 2015. He previously said he would not testify in Davis’ case.

As the only other living eyewitness who was in one of the two vehicles that night, Knight’s testimony could make or break the case.

Davis’ defense attorney Michael Sanft told The Associated Press that Knight would be a good witness for Davis’ defense if he did testify.

Fans have also speculated whether Sean “Diddy” Combs will testify. Combs is currently serving a four-year prison sentence in New Jersey following his conviction of prostitution-related charges.

In his book, Davis alleged Combs wanted Knight and Shakur dead and offered Davis money to kill them. Combs has long denied having any involvement in the shooting.

A spokesperson for Combs did not return emailed requests asking whether he plans to testify and his name does not appear on any witness list.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez reveals she is freezing her eggs and hasn’t ‘ruled out’ presidential run

Published

on

U.S. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) speaks to reporters.

New York Democratic congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has revealed she has decided to freeze her eggs and has shared her first steps in the process on social media.

The 36-year-old posted the clips on Sunday, hours before telling ABC News This Week she had not “ruled out the possibility” of running for president.

In the clips, Ocasio-Cortez shows herself taking an injection and talks through tips she has learnt, before answering questions about costs, clinical procedures, storage and how fertility care works under what she calls the US’s “broken” medical system.

In an interview on ABC News she said she wanted to “normalise” conversations about the process.

She said it was important “especially in this political environment”.

“This administration is denying reproductive care to women across the country, from abortion rights to the ability to carry out a healthy pregnancy,” she said. “I think it’s important for us as leaders to have these conversations and share these processes,” she added.

In an earlier post on Instagram she said she wanted to share the information even though there was a “political risk” in doing so.

When asked if she would run for president in the 2028 elections after being shown polling reflecting her popularity as a potential candidate, Ocasio-Cortez chuckled and tried to sidestep a direct answer.

“I’m focused on winning the midterms, I’m running for Congress right now,” she said.

But when pushed as to whether she was open to it and whether it was a realistic prospect, she said: “I haven’t ruled out the possibility and I’m very humbled to the tremendous amount of support out there.”

“We have a responsibility to remain focused on the midterms and not on our individual aspirations or plans,” she said.

After she was asked about a possible Senate run against minority leader Chuck Schumer, the US Senate’s top Democrat, Ocasio-Cortez replied that “anything was possible”.

The midterms are held every two years and fall in the middle of the president’s four-year term of office.

They are due to be held in early November. Votes will be cast for all 435 seats in the US House of Representatives, and a third of the 100 seats in the Senate are up for grabs.

People holding umbrellas along a street in Shanghai. One boy is seen trying to hold on to an inverted umbrella as winds intensify

Local governments have urged people to avoid outdoor activities, while several top tourist attractions remain closed, including parts of Disneyland and Legoland, and several viewing platforms along the Bund in Shanghai.

Footage on state media show ground-floor businesses flooded in the former French Concession in Shanghai – an area popular with tourists – and people walking through ankle-deep waters.

Several state media outlets have reported that a nine-year-old boy from Wenling, Zhejiang is missing after being swept into the sea. Chinese officials have not reported any casualties.

Parts of Zhejiang could receive 250mm to 500mm of rain over the next few days, forecasters say.

Authorities in Hangzhou, Zhejiang’s capital city, have waived parking fees in all public spaces for drivers seeking shelter amid the strong winds and floodwaters.

Elsewhere in the province, Wenzhou authorities have relocated some 900,000 residents and opened more than 1,000 emergency shelters, while about 390,000 people have been evacuated from their homes in the city of Taizhou.

In the coastal province of Fujian, maritime authorities have suspended dozens of passenger ferry routes and halted more than 100 offshore construction projects.

The storm moved over a long distance of 6,000km before making landfall, suggesting a lifespan of more than three times that of an average typhoon, according to China’s state broadcaster CCTV.

Jose Mourinho called Sir Alex Ferguson in tears as he went back on Man United agreement

Published

Manchester Evening News

Jose Mourinho’s new Netflix documentary delivered a bombshell regarding one awkward conversation with Manchester United legend Sir Alex Ferguson

Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed how Jose Mourinho cried on the phone to him after confirming he wouldn’t be able to replace him as Manchester United manager. ‘The Special One’ had initially agreed to take the Old Trafford gig when Ferguson retired in 2013 before a sudden U-turn.

At the time, Mourinho was on his way out of Real Madrid following a calamitous third season at the club. Five years after leaving Chelsea for the first time, the Portuguese tactician was suddenly back on the market just as his old Premier League rival was calling time on his 27-year stay at United.

Speaking on Netflix’s new ‘Mourinho’ documentary, which airs on Tuesday (August 11), Ferguson addressed Mourinho’s emotional call after reneging on their agreement.

“He was offered the job, yes,” said the United great. “I sat him down and explained the situation and, as far as I was concerned, he was accepting. And then, within hours, had changed.”

Mourinho was long tipped as a potential candidate to succeed Ferguson when his time at United was up. However, after feeling ‘betrayed’ by certain players at Real and hounded out of the Bernabeu, he felt his needs were better met with a return to Stamford Bridge.

“I was, of course, very flattered, because Man United has an incredible appeal,” said Mourinho. “When I say Real Madrid is the biggest club in the world, I have to say that Man United is very, very close.

“But one thing is love for football, and another thing is love for a certain club. I think this is more powerful than love for football. And fundamentally, after Real Madrid, I needed to feel I am loved.”

Despite previously falling out with then-Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich, The Special One was convinced his immediate future lay back at Stamford Bridge. However, that didn’t make it any easier to break the news to a man he holds in the highest regard.

Ferguson said: “Early evening, he phoned me and he was crying. And he says, ‘Alex, I can’t take it. I’ve given my word to Chelsea and I’m not gonna break my word’. The reason he gave to me, I could understand. But I was disappointed.”

United ended up hiring David Moyes as Ferguson’s heir in what turned out to be a dismal 10-month tenure. Louis van Gaal then picked up the reins and won the FA Cup in the second half of his two-season stint before Mourinho finally came aboard.

“For me to lose the chance to be the coach to succeed Sir Alex Ferguson was…dramatic,” Mourinho continued. “But I don’t regret [it], because it was a decision I made with my heart.

“I think it’s [philosopher Friedrich] Nietzsche [who said] that when you do something for something you love, it is never wrong.”

Mourinho rejoined Chelsea just two weeks after it was announced he was leaving Real by mutual consent. It wasn’t the same success story as his first stint in west London, though he did win a Premier League and EFL Cup double with the Blues in 2015.

By the time he arrived at Old Trafford in 2016, the wheels of motion Sir Alex had put in place at United had already come loose. Yet despite the shortcomings of the new regime, Mourinho went on to win both the Europa League and a League Cup with United in his first season.

The dreaded ‘third-season curse’ unfortunately struck yet again as Mourinho was relieved of his duties in December 2018. Many fans may wonder if the club’s recent history might have turned out differently had he taken the reins as agreed when Ferguson left in 2013, rather than attempting to glue back together the pieces of a puzzle that was already falling apart.

The Special One opens yet another exciting new chapter in his history as he returns to Real 13 years after his acrimonious departure. The move could put him on a collision course with United in this season’s Champions League, where Michael Carrick would be tasked with overcoming his old mentor.

Footage captured the moment a prolific offender learnt ‘the game was up’ as police found him cowering under a bed.

Officers had been trying to trace Joseph Wicks for months after he hit three people with a car in the early hours of November 30 last year.

At the time, the 27-year-old was recklessly speeding around Colchester in a Fiat 500, which mounted the pavement and struck pedestrians outside a nightclub in Queen Street.

He fled the scene and abandoned the car in Wivenhoe Quay, but officers recovered his fingerprints from inside the vehicle.

Fortunately, none of the victims suffered serious injuries.

Wicks had already been identified driving aggressively down narrow roads and around the city centre that morning, heading the wrong way along one-way streets, narrowly missing members of the public, and ignoring red lights.

As well as the dangerous driving incident, Wicks was wanted for other serious offences, including a stalking investigation.

But while officers continued their efforts to trace and detain him, Wicks went on to commit further offences.

A campaign of stalking and harassment against a woman culminated in an incident on May 8 this year, as it was reported that Wicks attended the victim’s address that day.

He was shouting, swearing, and acting aggressively, banging on the front door and demanding entry before returning to his van.

When a man approached the parked vehicle and opened the passenger door to speak to Wicks about his behaviour, he reported seeing a metal baseball bat and what appeared to be a handgun.

Wicks left the area but continued to bombard the woman with phone calls and messages.

Due to the report of a potential firearm, specially trained armed officers from our Force Support Unit began enquiries at several addresses linked to Wicks.

The following day, his van was located, and the bat was recovered. No firearm was found.

Armed officers executed a warrant at an address in Colchester on May 11 and found multiple people inside the property, all of whom denied having seen Wicks.

However, after carrying out a thorough search, officers uncovered him hiding underneath an Ottoman bed.

Wicks was arrested and charged with a number of offences, including dangerous driving, driving while disqualified, driving without insurance, and failing to stop for police.

His other charges were three counts of assault by beating, three counts of attempting to cause actual bodily harm, stalking, possession of an imitation firearm with intent to cause fear of violence, sending threatening communications, and criminal damage.

He admitted all of the charges except the imitation firearm offence, which he denied. That charge was left to lie on file by prosecutors.

Appearing for sentencing at Ipswich Crown Court on July 31, Wicks, of Braithwaite Drive, Colchester, was jailed for four years and six months and further disqualified from driving for two years and six months.

Inspector Tom Stokes, of our Force Support Unit, said: ‘In this case, officers were tasked with locating and arresting a man linked to a series of serious offences, including dangerous driving, which put members of the public at risk and a report involving what was believed to be a firearm.’

He added that officers must ‘plan carefully’ and ‘act decisively’ when information suggests a weapon may be involved.

Stokes went on to praise the ‘professionalism shown by the officers involved’, which resulted in Wicks’ arrest, despite his efforts to ‘conceal’ himself.

‘Their actions ensured a high-harm offender was brought before the courts and held accountable for his actions.

‘Much of the work carried out by armed officers happens out of the public eye, but it is built on extensive training, teamwork and a commitment to protecting communities across Essex.

‘We will continue to target those who pose the greatest risk and ensure they are brought to justice.’

JK Rowling offers to bankroll female NHS patients and staff who take legal action to protect same-sex spaces

British author and screenwriter JK Rowling arrives at the UK premiere of Fantastic Beasts the Crimes of Grindelwald

JK Rowling has offered to fund female NHS patients and staff who take legal action over biological males being allowed into women-only spaces.

The Harry Potter author acted after one health trust said transgender women can continue to use female wards, toilets, showers and changing rooms for now.

The move by the Midlands Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust (MPFT) came despite the introduction of a new statutory code on single-sex spaces.

Ms Rowling wrote on X: ‘Then the lawsuits will keep coming. Should any female patient or member of staff require funding to fight this assault on their legal rights, apply to jkrwf.org.’

That refers to the JK Rowling Women’s Fund, the private legal fund which she established last year.

Her intervention came after the trust, which covers Staffordshire and Shropshire, told employees there would be ‘no immediate changes’ to its policies following the introduction of the revised statutory code.

Under MPFT’s current policies, patients may access single-sex facilities, including hospital wards, according to their gender identity rather than biological sex. Male staff who identify as women can also use female toilets, showers and changing rooms.

The Equality and Human Rights Commission’s (EHRC) revised code came into force last week, nearly 16 months after the Supreme Court ruled that the words ‘woman’, ‘man’ and ‘sex’ in the Equality Act refer to biological sex.

The code says single-sex services must be provided on the basis of biological sex and warns that admitting members of the opposite sex may make them mixed-sex in law.

It also says employers should provide separate toilets, washing facilities and changing rooms for men and women in accordance with workplace regulations.

Former home secretary Suella Braverman accused the trust of breaking the law and called on the Department of Health and Social Care and the EHRC to take action. The Reform MP wrote on X: ‘This is a scandal.’

Ms Rowling’s latest intervention is the third public offer she has made to back legal action involving women’s sex-based rights in as many weeks.

In July, she offered financial backing to women’s organisations blacklisted as ‘anti-rights’ in a report by human rights charity Amnesty International UK – including Beira’s Place, the female-only sexual violence support service Ms Rowling founded.

The report has since been withdrawn and a public apology issued.

She also offered to help Women’s Rights Network Northern Ireland with its legal costs after a Belfast arts festival cancelled an event it had organised following complaints about the group’s views on sex and gender.

It did not take up her offer.

The author established the JK Rowling Women’s Fund last year to support women pursuing legal cases involving sex-based rights and workplace discrimination.

Maya Forstater of campaign group Sex Matters said her support had been ‘game-changing’ for women seeking justice after losing jobs or access to female-only sports and services.

She said: ‘Rowling is sending a message to institutions that they cannot continue to break the law and ride roughshod over women’s rights with impunity.’

Ms Rowling’s financial backing of legal action has attracted criticism from trans-rights campaigners, with Amnesty International UK’s withdrawn report raising concerns about wealthy individuals funding litigation challenging trans-inclusive policies.

The MPFT said it accepted the Supreme Court judgment and was reviewing policies while awaiting further guidance from NHS England.

Bolton man charged with cocaine supply after stop search

Officers from Greater Manchester Police’s Bolton North Neighbourhood Team executed a Section 8 warrant at an address in the area on Sunday (August 9).

During a search of the property, officers seized a quantity of Class A drugs.

A 45-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of possession with intent to supply Class A drugs.

He has since been bailed pending further enquiries.

Police have appealed to anyone with information about crime in their area to contact the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 or through its website.

The warrant comes days after a huge police presence in Halliwell on Friday (August 7), when officers responded to a suspected knife attack.

Police descended on a quiet cul-de-sac to investigate the incident.

An air ambulance also landed at the grounds of Bolton Rugby Club.

As of 4.30pm on Saturday (August 8), no arrests had been made, and GMP said there was no further update at that moment.

How thousands of firms, from car washes to vape shops and kebab takeaways, have imported migrants on ‘skilled worker’ visas – and why our bloated welfare system is adding to the scandal

Published

The Kalar Car Wash is one of more than 140,000 firms in Britain with a Home Office licence to sponsor visas intended to bring in ¿skilled workers¿ from overseas

The men work dutifully, jet-washing cars and vans, soaping them up and drying them off again with a tatty chamois leather.

For just £7, it’s a thorough treatment, paused only momentarily when the team of six share a joke in their native language over bonnets and wheel arches.

As fine a job the boys at Kalar Car Wash do on this industrial estate close to Huddersfield town centre in West Yorkshire, one would be hard-pressed to describe their work as skilled labour.

Yet the car wash is one of more than 140,000 firms in Britain with a Home Office licence to sponsor visas intended to bring in ‘skilled workers’ from overseas.

Hundreds of kebab houses, chippies, chicken shops, vape shops, off-licences, barbers and a handful of hand car washes such as Kalar have successfully applied to become visa sponsors.

They pay just £611 for the privilege, which, in theory, allows them to hire ‘skilled workers’ from far-flung countries who are then given a visa to stay in Britain for up to five years.

After that, they can apply to remain here permanently.

The list of eligible occupations is lengthy but many are obviously designed to plug skills shortages in the country: engineers, doctors, biochemists (these vocations are rightly deemed ‘higher skilled’).

A brief glance at the list of ‘medium skilled’ occupations eligible for visas, however, shows some surprisingly humble roles.

Newsagents, ‘sales supervisors’, and the somewhat vague position of ‘shopkeeper’ are all medium-skilled jobs, according to the Government, making them very attractive propositions for those from abroad who would like to make a new life in Britain.

And who could blame them? Under the current guidelines, those arriving in the country on skilled worker visas must be paid a minimum salary, which is currently set at a rather comfortable £41,700 per year (the average UK salary is £39,000), or the ‘going rate’ for the job, whichever is higher. Sales directors, for instance, must be paid at least £60,000 per year, according to the Home Office.

Dozens of mosques and Hindu temples are also eligible to sponsor staff from overseas under similar ‘religious worker’ visas, which cost applicants just £340 and, if they are successful, allow them to stay in Britain for two years.

One such body, The Islamic Centre of England, in Maida Vale, west London, has a licence to sponsor skilled worker visas and was certainly doing so until as recently as 2022. It remains on the official register of visa sponsors, but it is currently the subject of an ongoing Charity Commission investigation for alleged close ties to the hardline Iranian regime.

Among the small print in the application process is one particular caveat – those applying for the visas must also have a solid grasp of English.

Which takes us back to Kalar Car Wash. When the Daily Mail visited last month to ask about the firm’s sponsorship of visas, none of the men could speak English other than to tell our reporter that ‘the boss’ was ‘on holiday’.

They were also unable to tell us whether they themselves had taken advantage of Britain’s generous visa system.

But with the business currently licensed to sponsor workers, with bosses having gone to the trouble of completing the application process, one may question which other skilled roles might be on offer.

Conservative MP Neil O’Brien told the Daily Mail that bringing in overseas workers for jobs in vape shops and car washes was ‘farcical’, adding the visa scheme was ‘yet another back door in our broken immigration system’.

The Home Office claims that since tightening up the skilled worker scheme last summer to focus on graduate-level professions – and increasing the minimum salary requirements – refusal rates have increased and businesses such as kebab shops are now unlikely to be eligible to sponsor workers.

Be that as it may, last month, the Daily Mail travelled across the country to investigate the skilled worker visa for ourselves and to ascertain whether it seems that its generous terms are being exploited.

The results would suggest that, despite the Labour government’s attempted crackdown, it remains a well-trodden route to Britain and highlights a largely overlooked crossroads where seemingly lax immigration rules meet our infamously bloated welfare state.

Leaning on the glass counter towards the rear of his Middlesbrough shop, surrounded by thousands of vapes of every size, colour and shape imaginable, Shehzad Iqbal, 41, is frank about his willingness to use the skilled worker visa.

His firm, Swift Mobiles and Vapes, has been eligible to sponsor workers for a number of years and currently has one employee on the scheme, who arrived in Britain two years ago from Mr Iqbal’s native Pakistan.

But, according to the shopkeeper – who has lived in the north-east town for 13 years – he is not averse to employing local people.

‘The people in the local area don’t want to work, honestly,’ he claims. ‘I advertised for staff on Facebook, I spoke to a few people and asked them to come in but they didn’t show up.’

He added that, in contrast, those employed from abroad ‘know they have to come and know they have to work’ to maintain their visa status.

‘It’s a good scheme,’ he said. ‘People who are coming, they are working perfectly. If there were people who wanted to work from here [Middlesbrough] I would be happy to get them.

‘But the problem is they don’t come, they just p***-take.’

He admitted the basic salary might seem high for the work involved, which predominately involves fixing mobile phones and laptops as well as serving customers purchasing vapes, but added: ‘If you want to work, you can earn good money.

‘A lot of people want to chill out, want to stay on benefits. The Government has to stop benefits and then people would work.’

He said he is not currently looking to bring in more workers from overseas but ‘if we need to, we can do it’.

Perhaps somewhat more controversially, the skilled worker visa also allows the applicant’s partner and children to join them in Britain as ‘dependants’. The visa holder must show they have been working continually in a ‘medium- skilled’ role since at least July last year – and then their immediate family can join them.

Brothers Irfan and Irslan Rabani are genial company. Stripping boxes from pallets outside their Premier convenience store in Stockton-on-Tees, County Durham, they are happy to discuss their route to Britain.

Irslan, 30, and Irfan, 28, successfully applied for skilled worker visas to work at the shop, which is owned by their brother, Adnan, 32. All three came to Britain from Pakistan.

When the Daily Mail visited last month, Home Office officials had just arrived and were discussing the business with the oldest brother.

Asked for their job titles, Irslan and Irfan describe themselves as ‘retail managers’. Handily, such an occupation is classed as ‘medium skilled’ by the Government and therefore eligible for the skilled worker visa scheme.

The title is vague enough to allow plenty of room for manoeuvre: the brothers describe how they stack shelves, serve customers and organise the rota for other employees.

Irslan says he earns around £26,500, which was the salary requirement until March 2024 and is far from the current minimum. There is no suggestion they have done anything wrong, as they were eligible to extend their visas under the old requirements.

Irfan first came to the UK to study at Coventry University in 2018 on a student visa, later switching to a skilled worker visa at his brother’s shop, he says.

Asked why the firm needs to hire from abroad rather than look to the local area, his response echoes Mr Iqbal’s from a few miles away in Middlesbrough.

‘I’ve been here for eight years and we haven’t had a single person, a local person, come and ask for a job,’ he says.

‘Not one. If no one comes to ask for a job I can’t go and knock on their door and say, “Come, please, work here.” So we have to hire from outside. It doesn’t make any sense.’

The criticisms may be a reflection of the benefits boom in Britain, with a record four million people claiming Personal Independence Payment (PIP) for disabilities in England and Wales as of April this year – 83 per cent of those are of working age.

Disability benefits, which can total up to £200 per week per person, are being paid out to a record number of people. This is largely due to an increasing number of claimants arguing that their ADHD or depression renders them unable to work.

The Bargain Stonegate off-licence on the outskirts of Leeds is a typical corner shop. Any jobs on offer are relatively rudimentary. But this business has also taken advantage of the skilled worker scheme – bringing in one shop assistant from India.

Again, the shopkeeper, also from India, claims the reason for doing this is because she can’t employ staff locally, with prospective workers ‘coming in for a week, then they don’t return for the next’.

Her employee also earns far less than the current minimum salary as she was hired before changes to the Home Office rules.

In Harrow, north London, another business – Sam’s Chicken – arranged to bring in 12 migrants on skilled worker visas to work at the chicken shop over a four-year period, GB News reported.

Mr O’Brien, a critic of the scheme, said: ‘The scale of abuse in the skilled worker visa system is becoming impossible to ignore.’

He criticised the possibility of ‘workers from abroad being brought in to work in vape shops and car washes while over a million young Britons are out of work and out of education’.

‘These are plainly not skilled jobs,’ he added. ‘And there are Brits here just as qualified to do them. This is yet another back door in our broken immigration system which the Government must act urgently to shut.’

It would appear the Government has two pressing issues.

Stopping Britain appearing as the land of milk and honey to those who want to come from overseas – while convincing the British that plugging gaps in the jobs market is a better option than relying on our notoriously generous benefits scheme.

To do that, some extraordinarily tough – and ruthless – decisions must be made.

A Home Office spokesman said: ‘Thanks to our decisive action to raise the skilled salary threshold, these kinds of businesses are incredibly unlikely to get a licence approved.

‘Companies must apply for the appropriate sponsor licence. The holding of a licence does not guarantee that it is in use nor that any sponsored visa application will be approved by the Home Office following a rigorous assessment process.

‘Holding a sponsorship licence is no guarantee of a visa and all licences are determined on a case-by-case basis.

‘To further protect the system from abuse, more than 100 occupations have been cut from overseas recruitment access.

‘Meanwhile, skilled sponsor revocations went up by 950 per cent in 2025 compared to 2023.’
