The earrings caught the light in every photo. The ring is still in your hand. The gown is in a plastic bag behind a door.

Two of those three will outlast the other by decades, and which two depends almost entirely on what happens in the next few weeks.

Jewelry is the part most couples get wrong, mainly because it looks indestructible. Gold does not stain and stones do not wrinkle, so the assumption is that nothing needs doing. Prongs loosen, pearl strings stretch and settings wear regardless.

• Watch for sustained humidity above roughly 65 percent, which raises the risk of mold

• Check for pests, then adjust the tissue and refold along slightly different lines
• Choose a closet in the living area rather than an attic, basement or garage

That refolding step matters. Shifting the fold lines moves the stress points so no single crease sets permanently, and preservation specialists generally suggest revisiting the box every 12 to 18 months.

Jewelry needs the inverse of dry storage. A closet is fine, a safe is fine, but a desiccant-packed safe or a very dry vault will slowly damage pearls and opals.

Beading, sequins and heirloom trims

Dense crystal work, heavy sequins, an ao dai, gele trimmings and aso ebi lace all place uneven weight across the fabric. A hanger turns that weight into a slow pull on the seams.

What to Look For In Great Wide Leg Trousers

I like them styled with sneakers or other flat shoes — getting a heel right with them can be a bit tricky, although I’d love to hear your tips! (Another possible issue to be on the lookout for: can you wear shoes without the pant leg getting caught and tucked in the strap, laces, or vamp of the shoe — kind of like in this picture below? (It’s originally from En Saison @ Anthropologie.) Boots can be ideal for this reason.)

I’m seeing wide-leg pants styled with a lot of crop tops — for the office I’d switch it to a work-acceptable bodysuit or other close-fitted top.

Just another note on fabrics: I feel like either a drapey fabric, or a heavy fabric like tweed or flannel is better for these kinds of pants because cotton or linen will wrinkle — in fact, if you’re planning on wearing the wide-leg pants to work I’d avoid those fabrics.

Spanx has come out with a shockingly fantastic pant collection in the last few years, but they’ve typically only been available in solids or subdued stripes. This plaid colorway is something of a departure, and I couldn’t be more excited.

I’ve found that they run pretty true to size, although a bit snug in the waist (by design).

The pants come in seasonal colorways as well as basics, and are available in regular, petite, plus, and plus-sized petite sizes at Spanx.com. Naturally, I reach for shorts on the hottest days, when getting dressed needs to be easy. But this summer I found myself drawn to them differently. The pairs I’m loving are ones I want to wear to dinner, when the light gets lower, and they still make sense with bare legs in August.
