How to Care for Your Wedding Jewelry and Gown After the Big Day

Published

on

Image

The earrings caught the light in every photo. The ring is still in your hand. The gown is in a plastic bag behind a door.

Two of those three will outlast the other by decades, and which two depends almost entirely on what happens in the next few weeks.

Jewelry is the part most couples get wrong, mainly because it looks indestructible. Gold does not stain and stones do not wrinkle, so the assumption is that nothing needs doing. Prongs loosen, pearl strings stretch and settings wear regardless.

Key takeaways

  • Store jewelry separately from the gown and separately from each other, since stones scratch stones.
  • Pearls and opals need humidity. Very dry storage such as a safe-deposit box is a poor long-term home.
  • Skip ultrasonic cleaners for pearls, other organic gems and treated or fragile stones.
  • Book an annual professional inspection. A loosening prong is cheap to fix and expensive to ignore.
  • Clean the gown before storing it, store it flat if embellished, and never leave it in plastic.
Image

Caring for the jewelry you wore

Many durable untreated gems, diamonds included, clean up with mild soap, warm water and a soft brush. Rinse in a bowl rather than over an open drain, and ask a jeweler first about anything treated, antique or unfamiliar.

Pearls and opals are the exception to almost every rule. The Gemological Institute of America notes that both draw moisture from their surroundings, which is why very dry storage damages them over time. Wipe pearls after every wear, keep them in a soft pouch away from heat, and have the string checked periodically.

Avoid ultrasonic cleaners entirely for pearls, other organic gems and fragile or treated stones including emeralds and opals. The vibration that lifts grime from a diamond can fracture an inclusion-heavy emerald.

Store rings separately in soft pouches or a divided box. A loose ring sharing a compartment with another will scratch it, and diamonds scratch almost everything including other diamonds.

The annual check most people skip

Book the bridal set in for professional inspection once a year.

A jeweler will spot a loosening prong, a worn shank or a stretched pearl string long before any of them becomes the reason a stone goes missing. Prong failure is the single most common cause of lost centre stones, and it is entirely visible under a loupe months before it happens.

This is also the moment to sort paperwork. If the rings are not on a valuation and listed with your insurer, do that while the receipts and certificates are still findable.

Choosing a piece to wear while the set rests

Plenty of newlyweds keep one everyday piece in rotation so the bridal set spends most of its life protected. That choice matters more than it sounds, because an everyday piece takes the wear the good jewelry would otherwise absorb.

Solid gold is the practical answer. Plated pieces wear through at the points that touch skin most, and once the base metal shows there is nothing to restore.

ENEA Studio is worth knowing here as an example of what to look for. It is a family workshop in Athens where three generations of goldsmiths have worked since 1953, making solid gold in recycled 14k and 10k and backing its pieces with a lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects. It holds a 4.9 rating across more than 10,000 reviews and has been featured in Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar and Brides.

The recycled gold point is worth understanding rather than skimming. Recycled gold is chemically identical to newly mined gold once refined, so it is not a compromise on quality, it simply avoids the extraction.

Whichever brand you choose, read the warranty terms properly. Coverage for defects in materials and craftsmanship is not the same as coverage for everyday wear, damage or loss, and the difference tends to surface at the worst possible moment.

The gown: first 48 hours

Move it to a shaded room away from heat, sunlight and radiators so it can air out. A padded hanger suits a lightweight dress, but anything heavy or heavily embellished should lie flat on a clean surface.

Resist treating stains yourself. Household solvents can set a mark permanently, damage the fabric or lift the dye, and an amateur attempt often makes professional removal harder.

Photograph what you can see. Soil along the hem, wine on the bodice, makeup at the neckline. Those images help a cleaner map the damage before treatment begins.

Store the veil, shoes and jewelry separately from the dress, since crystals, metal settings and dense beading snag netting and lace with very little provocation.

Gown storage, museum style

Clean before you store. Invisible traces of sugar, sweat and champagne oxidize into brown marks over months, which is why a gown that looked spotless can yellow in storage.

Ask the cleaner what they can realistically treat. Complete removal is not always possible, and an honest answer up front is more useful than an optimistic one.

National Park Service conservation guidance recommends storing heavy or embellished garments flat in museum-quality boxes or drawers, because hanging concentrates the full weight on the shoulders and seams. Inside the box, separate layers with acid-free tissue and pad every fold with soft tissue rolls so creases never become sharp.

The Victoria and Albert Museum recommends pH-neutral boxes and acid-free white tissue, stored away from attics. Smithsonian guidance adds that textiles need some air movement, so nothing airtight.

Framing is a display choice rather than a preservation one. Even with UV-filtering glazing it suits short-term display, so treat it as something you do to a gown you have already preserved properly.

Climate-smart storage for both

Stable conditions matter more than any product you buy. Run this check twice a year.

  • Aim for a steady 20 to 24°C, or 68 to 75°F, with relative humidity between 40 and 57 percent
  • Watch for sustained humidity above roughly 65 percent, which raises the risk of mold
  • Keep boxes off the floor and away from exterior walls, vents and water lines
  • Check for pests, then adjust the tissue and refold along slightly different lines
  • Choose a closet in the living area rather than an attic, basement or garage

That refolding step matters. Shifting the fold lines moves the stress points so no single crease sets permanently, and preservation specialists generally suggest revisiting the box every 12 to 18 months.

Jewelry needs the inverse of dry storage. A closet is fine, a safe is fine, but a desiccant-packed safe or a very dry vault will slowly damage pearls and opals.

Image 11cb41

Beading, sequins and heirloom trims

Dense crystal work, heavy sequins, an ao dai, gele trimmings and aso ebi lace all place uneven weight across the fabric. A hanger turns that weight into a slow pull on the seams.

Store these pieces flat without exception. Add tissue beneath embellished panels and pad each fold so beads and sequins never press into the fabric layer underneath.

Heirloom trims deserve their own tissue and their own space in the box. Metallic thread in particular can tarnish and transfer onto lighter fabric pressed against it.

Don’t forget the second look

More brides now wear two outfits, and the reception piece tends to get forgotten. A jumpsuit danced in for four hours has absorbed just as much sweat and spilled champagne as the ceremony gown.

Tailored separates bring their own storage rules. Structured shoulders hold their shape better on a wide padded hanger than folded flat, which is the reverse of the advice for a beaded gown.

The principle running through all of this is the same one behind any good maintenance routine for the things you own. Clean before storing, store off the floor with air circulation, keep items apart so they cannot press or scratch, and rotate what you wear so nothing takes all the wear.

Have it cleaned on the same trip as the dress. Two garments in one visit usually costs less than two separate ones.

A keepsake, not a time capsule

Get the jewelry inspected annually, insured properly and stored apart. Clean the gown, support its weight and keep it somewhere cool and stable indoors.

The routine is identical whether you handle it yourself or hand it to a specialist. Consistency beats one heroic preservation effort followed by a decade of neglect.

Frequently asked questions

How should I store my wedding jewelry?

Separately from the gown and separately from each other, in soft pouches or a divided box so stones cannot scratch. Keep pearls and opals away from very dry conditions and away from heat, and avoid ultrasonic cleaners for organic or treated stones.

How often should wedding rings be checked?

Once a year by a jeweler. Prong wear is the most common cause of lost stones and is visible long before failure, so an annual inspection is the cheapest insurance available.

Why are pearls and opals treated differently?

Both draw moisture from the air, so extremely dry storage causes damage over time. That makes a desiccated safe or long-term vault storage a poor choice, and a soft pouch in normal room conditions a better one.

What does a lifetime warranty on jewelry actually cover?

Usually defects in materials and craftsmanship, not everyday wear, damage or loss. Read the terms before buying, because the two are frequently confused and the distinction only becomes clear at the point of claim.

How long after the wedding should the gown be cleaned?

Within a few weeks if you can. Sugar, sweat and champagne are invisible when fresh but oxidize into brown marks over time, and the longer a stain sits the lower the chance of full removal.

I’ve been hearing good things about Bared Footwear, and they’re having a sale right now. The big caveat, unfortunately, is that anything more than 10% off is final sale… but if you happen to be familiar with the brand and know your size, this is a great opportunity to stock up.

As we know, I love a good sophisticated strappy flat — my narrow heels/wide forefoot (aka duck feet) always appreciate the extra support. Bared Footwear has a number of options that look great, including the pictured ones (Grackle or these very similar ones) but also these ankle-strap flats and a number of Mary Jane styles.

The shoes were $299, but are now marked to $269; the brand offers sizes 34-43.

Wide-leg pants have become a workwear staple — but with so many options out there right now, which ones are actually the best wide-leg pants to wear to work?

We’ve talked before about some of the trickier aspects of wearing wide-leg trousers, including what shoes to wear with them, what tops to pair with them, and how long your pants should be. Today, though, we’re focusing on the pants themselves: the styles that are polished enough for the office, comfortable enough for a long workday, and available in a range of prices, sizes, and inseams.

Readers, which are your favorite wide-leg pants to wear to work? What are your best tips on hemming them, and which shoes and tops do you pair them with?

The Best Wide Leg Pants for Work: Quick Picks

Sure, we all know what wardrobe essentials for work professional women are supposed to have in their closets, but if you’re buying one for the first time or replacing one you’ve worn into the ground, it can be a pain to find exactly the right incarnation in stores. In “The Hunt,” we search the stores for a basic item that every woman should have.

What to Look For In Great Wide Leg Trousers

I like them styled with sneakers or other flat shoes — getting a heel right with them can be a bit tricky, although I’d love to hear your tips! (Another possible issue to be on the lookout for: can you wear shoes without the pant leg getting caught and tucked in the strap, laces, or vamp of the shoe — kind of like in this picture below? (It’s originally from En Saison @ Anthropologie.) Boots can be ideal for this reason.)

The main thing about full-length pants, though, is that you really do have to know which shoes you plan to wear them with when you get them hemmed — and then stick to that general height of shoe every time you wear the pants. (Here are our thoughts on the best shoes to wear with wide leg pants…)

I’m seeing wide-leg pants styled with a lot of crop tops — for the office I’d switch it to a work-acceptable bodysuit or other close-fitted top.

(Update: we just rounded up ideas for what tops to wear with wide leg pants.)

Just another note on fabrics: I feel like either a drapey fabric, or a heavy fabric like tweed or flannel is better for these kinds of pants because cotton or linen will wrinkle — in fact, if you’re planning on wearing the wide-leg pants to work I’d avoid those fabrics.

The Best Wide Leg Pants to Wear to Work

The Cult Favorite: Aritzia / Effortless

Aritzia has some of the best wide leg pants — both their wildly popular Effortless pant as well as their other popular Limitless pant are cut with loose, wide legs, and come in a variety of fabrics. Most of their pants are around $148, and are available in sizes 00-16, as well as petite and tall sizes.

Psst: check out our latest thoughts on the best trouser lengths for women!

Best Affordable Pick: Abercrombie & Fitch

Readers have given shoutouts to Abercrombie & Fitch Sloan pants as affordable, reliable wide leg pants — and they have a curvy option!

The pants are $95 at Abercrombie in sizes 23-38 in short, regular, and long sizes, but they’re frequently on sale. Three other budget-friendly options include Amazon’s Tapata pants, Old Navy Taylor trousers, and Banana Republic Factory.

Fun Colors, Prints, and Fabrics: Anthropologie / Maeve

Several readers have sung the praises of these wide-leg flare pants from Maeve. (One even went so far as to describe them as the second coming of The Skirt, which is high praise if you’re an OG Corporette reader.)

I love the slightly stretchy “magic” fabric, which fits and flatters a wide range of body types. They also come in a great range of sizes, from standard to plus, petite to tall.

Note that most options have patch pockets on the front of the pant, which definitely gives them a more casual vibe… so know your office!

The pants are $130 at Anthropologie and come in sizes 23-34 (standard, petite, and tall), as well as 14W-26W.

Best for Polished Comfort: Spanx / Perfect Pants

As Elizabeth noted,

Spanx has come out with a shockingly fantastic pant collection in the last few years, but they’ve typically only been available in solids or subdued stripes. This plaid colorway is something of a departure, and I couldn’t be more excited.

I’ve found that they run pretty true to size, although a bit snug in the waist (by design).

The pants come in seasonal colorways as well as basics, and are available in regular, petite, plus, and plus-sized petite sizes at Spanx.com. The Perfect Pants tend to be solid colors, but if you’re ok with a more casual vibe their AirEssentials pants (also at Nordstrom) are wonderful for business casual or travel days, and they even have a new suiting collection that includes wide leg pants.

Another ponte option readers like: Talbots.

Best Fashion-Forward Pick: Favorite Daughter

These $218 Favorite Daughter pants look great, and are also available in a bunch of colors (and fabrics) at Nordstrom and FavoriteDaughter.com (ooh, and they have petites and talls). They’re available in sizes 0-18.

Another fashion forward pick: Reformation.

Best for Travel/Commuting: Athleta Pinnacle

If you’re in a casual office or have a casual day coming up, athleisure may be appropriate — readers have been loving the Athleta Pinnacle pants for a while now as great wide legs. (Old Navy’s Taylor is similar.)

Another popular pick: Lululemon’s Daydrift.

The Splurge: Veronica Beard Tonelli

Veronica Beard is a reader favorite, and our splurge pick. They have a lot of wide legged pants (including corduroys!) but right now I think my pick would be these classic wide leg pants. They’re $528 and available in sizes 00-16. Another great VB pant: the Marbeau.

Another great pick for quality: M.M.LaFleur.

A woman wearing black pants and a black floral blouseA woman wearing black pants and a black floral blouse

Our daily workwear reports suggest one piece of work-appropriate attire in a range of prices.

This blouse from Cinq à Sept is one of the prettiest fall florals I’ve seen in some time. While I would usually include sheer or semi-sheer blouses as an absolute “don’t” for the office, I think the cut and style of this one could work with a black cami, especially if you’re layering it under a blazer. (I would advise against doing something that’s nude-for-you, just to avoid looking like you are, in fact, nude underneath!)

What say you, readers? Would this fly in your office?

The blouse is $365 at Bloomingdale’s and comes in sizes XXS-XL.

The Dressier Side of Shorts

The Dressier Side of Shorts

Outfit Details: Valentino ShirtChan Luu Shorts, Hermes Bag (similar, less expensive here), Miu Miu Flats (sold out, similar here and here), Sherman Field Necklace

Naturally, I reach for shorts on the hottest days, when getting dressed needs to be easy. But this summer I found myself drawn to them differently. The pairs I’m loving are ones I want to wear to dinner, when the light gets lower, and they still make sense with bare legs in August. All it takes is a small shift in fabric, cut, or proportion to change a silhouette everyone has already decided is casual.

I’m excited to keep wearing that idea into September, when the days are still warm and I’m not quite ready to part with my summer tan. A longer line just above the knee, a fuller shape, a little shine, or embroidered trim makes the whole outfit feel considered enough for evening while keeping the ease that makes shorts so good in the first place. It’s a fresh way to look at a true summer staple, one that means I don’t have to say goodbye to the season all at once.

I was excited to see that this necklace is a bestseller at J.Crew — personally I was never a fan of the “tiny dainty necklace” era.

I’m featuring the gray because it was the only color shown on a model, but it also comes in green, burgundy, light blue, red, navy, and black. I feel like the black one would be a lovely basic, but any of the other ones would be great for a pop of color above a crewneck or peeking out from an open collar.

The necklaces are $49.50-59.50 at J.Crew.
