A London derby is the headline act on the opening Saturday of the new Premier League season as Tottenham make the short trip from north to west to face Brentford. “On behalf of everyone at the office of the police and crime commissioner and the people of Cleveland, I extend our deepest condolences to the families, friends and colleagues of all seven people who lost their lives.

“I also give my sincere thanks to the staff from all our emergency services who responded to, and are continuing to manage, this devastating incident.”

Def Leppard star Vivian Campbell has revealed his cancer has returned after a donor transplant failed to work, previously saying it was his “only hope to survive”.

The Belfast-born guitarist, 62, first went public with his Hodgkin’s lymphoma diagnosis in 2013 while part-way through an intensive six-month chemotherapy programme.

Campbell had celebrated being in remission last year following a gruelling 12-year fight against the disease, which included stem cell treatment, immunotherapy and a donor transplant. But the musician has now disclosed that the cancer has come back and that he is once again undergoing chemotherapy, The Mirror reports.

“There’s only been one time that I felt it was gonna kill me. In the winter of 2023, I got really scared about what was happening and the pace at which it was happening,” he told El Salvadorian radio station YSKL, adding, “And I realised at that point that I had to do a donor transplant. It was my only hope to survive.”

He also revealed the stem cell transplant ‘failed to stick’ after it was carried out in January of last year. “So the cancer has returned, and I’m continuing treatments to manage it”, he explained.

The seasoned guitarist, who began his lengthy career with rock band Sweet Savage in the 1970s before joining heavy metal pioneers Dio in the early ’80s, says music has helped him stay positive through the darkest moments.

“I do think that that’s what helped me, even when I was at a really low ebb with cancer treatment,” he said. “The fact that I could still continue to work, that gives me something to live for.

“Something that you enjoy, that you’re passionate about, that you can wake up in the morning and look forward to. I think that deflects, that takes away from focusing too much on cancer.”

Campbell has previously told fans he is not afraid of death, deciding to “just live his life” after being diagnosed more than a decade ago. While appearing on the Fueled with Chris Cyr podcast last September, he said: “It made me spend more money because, as Jerry Seinfeld said, ‘you can’t drive money.’

“So as soon as I got…not as soon as, but within a year of having my cancer diagnosis…I went and bought a very expensive Porsche.”

On the same episode, Campbell recalled thinking that it was “a lot of money” but said that he also thought he “could be dead next week” at the time.

“Well, actually, there is a saying in Ireland – ‘you’re a long time dead’. So, I sort of take it to heart. I’m a little bit reckless in that way,” he continued.

“[I] have a lot of faith in the universe, that things will work out.” Speaking about his cancer, he said: “I thought ‘okay, this is the hand I’ve been dealt’. As I see it, you can go one of two routes – you can capitulate to it or you can just live your life. And I decided to do the latter.

“Mentally, I’m not afraid to die. I don’t wanna die because I’ve got kids and family. I’ve got a lot of people who depend on me, but I’ve never been afraid of it and I just keep pushing at it and keep putting back. And most importantly, I just keep living my life, y’know.”

Last year, in June, Campbell revealed he was “completely in remission” for the first time in more than ten years after going “through the mill” with treatments including chemotherapy and immunotherapy.

He explained: “The cancer kept coming back, and then a couple of years ago, it really got bad. So it was the first time in having to deal with it that I was seriously concerned about it. And the doctors told me really my only chance for a cure was to do a donor transplant, and that’s exactly what I did.”

Campbell joined Def Leppard in 1992 after original guitarist Steve Clarke died of an overdose. The guitarist has also worked with British rock royalty Whitesnake and legendary American singer-songwriter Lou Gramm.

This is the moment police are seen pursuing a car down a narrow road just minutes before seven people were killed in a head-on smash, including two police officers who lost their lives.

Footage exclusively obtained by the Daily Mail shows a silver Volkswagen Passat speeding past homes on Lime Road, Teesville, at 3.36am on Saturday morning.

In the eerie video captured by a home security camera, two police cars follow just seconds later, both with their lights flashing and sirens sounding. 

The dramatic pursuit began about a mile away from where the Volkswagen smashed into a police car while travelling in the wrong direction down the A66 in Teesside. 

The vehicles collided at around 3.40am in South Bank, near Middlesbrough. 

The marked police car was heading the correct way down the A66 before the crash and was not involved in the initial pursuit, it is understood. 

Cleveland Police Chief Constable Victoria Fuller paid tribute to the two ‘brave’ police officers killed and named them as PC Matthew Blades, 37, and PC Tom Clough, 38, during a police press conference.

She said on Saturday: ‘This is an incredibly sad day for Cleveland. The loss has been felt across our communities, by our police family and by our partner agencies.

‘These were brave officers protecting our communities and serving our residents who didn’t return home to their families at the end of their shift.

The crash comes just days after five young men were also killed in a head-on smash on an Irish motorway. The youngsters, who were in a stolen BMW travelling the wrong way down the M9, died at the scene in Co Kildare in the early hours of Sunday. 

Teesville resident Neil Hutchinson, 47, said: ‘There were police cars tearing down the street at 3.30am with lights flashing and their sirens going, it woke me up.

‘You could tell from the noise that they were travelling at high speed. Two cars went down the street and then a few seconds later there was a third, they were obviously going after another vehicle. 

‘It’s a narrow street with cars parked on either side so it must have been a serious situation to be going at that speed down this road.

‘We woke up this morning to the news that people have been killed. They were travelling in the direction of the A66 so it must have been part of the same incident.’

Another resident said: ‘A car shot down the street at speed and the police were right behind it and they were all travelling at very high speed, it was terrifying and must have woken the whole street. It’s tragic that it’s ended with people dead.’

The Independent Office for Police Conduct said officers spotted a suspicious vehicle and a pursuit began before the car travelled onto the A66 and crashed. The watchdog has launched an investigation following a mandatory referral from Cleveland Police. 

Prime Minister Andy Burnham said he was ‘devastated’ to hear of the deaths of two police officers and five members of the public in the crash. 

‘My thoughts are with the families and loved ones of everyone involved, and with everyone at Cleveland Police,’ he wrote in a post on X.  

‘Thank you to the emergency services responding in incredibly difficult circumstances.’

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood also described the collision as ‘devastating’. 

She wrote on X: ‘A devastating incident in Teesside this morning in which seven people have died, including two police officers.

‘Cleveland police have my support as they work to identify all those involved. Police officers put their own safety on the line to protect their communities every single day.

‘The two officers were on active duty, serving the people of Cleveland.

‘My thoughts are with all those affected, their families, friends, the emergency services who attended the scene and the wider police family.’

Meanwhile, the chairwoman of Cleveland Police Federation said ‘words cannot describe the pain’ following the death of two police officers in a crash on the A66.

Lauren Somerville said: ‘Words cannot describe the pain the Cleveland Police family are feeling today. Our colleagues who should have been going home to their loved ones at the end of their shifts are not. And that is just unfathomable.

‘Cleveland Police Federation will be offering full support to our fallen colleagues’ families and they have all of our love and care at this time.

‘When the time is right we will pay full tribute to our brave colleagues. But we can assure that their sacrifice will never be forgotten.’

In a statement, the federation said it was supporting the two officers’ close colleagues and asked people to ‘spare a thought’ for the Cleveland Police officers at work following the deaths.

The A66 is currently closed in both directions between Normanby Road and Church Lane and is expected to remain shut ‘for some time’.

The road is the major artery through Teesside and the location of the crash is surrounded by industrial units and factories. 

A large number of emergency service vehicles were at the scene this morning and motorists are being urged to use alternative routes.

North East Ambulance Service sent 14 units to the scene, including ambulance crews, a specialist paramedic, a hazardous area response team and a doctor from Great North Air Ambulance Service.

Anna Turley, MP for the Redcar constituency where the crash happened, said: ‘My heart goes out to every family, friend and loved one now facing the most unimaginable loss following this morning’s devastating accident on the A66.

‘Cleveland Police have confirmed that seven people have sadly lost their lives. Their families and loved ones are now facing an unimaginable loss that will be felt forever.

‘Two of the seven people who have lost their lives were Cleveland Police officers, on duty serving our community. They went to work to keep people safe, and they should have come home to their families.

‘Their loss will be felt deeply by their loved ones, fellow officers and right across the communities they served.

‘Cleveland Police are investigating the accident, alongside the Independent Office for Police Conduct. It is crucial that we respect that process and avoid speculation at this deeply painful time.

‘I cannot begin to imagine how difficult this has been for the emergency services responding to such a devastating incident. Thank you to every one of them for their courage, care and professionalism.

‘I am being kept updated by Cleveland Police and by the Home Office as Minister and will share further official information when appropriate.

‘The A66 will remain closed in both directions between Normanby Road and Church Lane. Please avoid the area and use alternative routes.’

IOPC director of investigations Nicola Marfleet said: ‘This is a tragic incident, and my thoughts are with family and friends and all those affected, including the emergency services in attendance.’

She added investigators had been sent to start reviewing evidence, and the watchdog is cooperating with Cleveland Police to establish the circumstances of the collision.

The collision, which happened at around 3.39am, involved a marked Cleveland Police vehicle and a Volkswagen Passat travelling the wrong way along the dual carriageway, with all seven occupants pronounced dead at the scene.

Mr Burnham’s message of condolence came as local leaders, including Redcar MP Anna Turley and Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen, began paying tribute to those who lost their lives in what police described as a “devastating incident” that will be felt across the North East.

Mr Burnham said he was “devastated” to hear that two police officers and five members of the public had been killed in a crash between a police car and a Volkswagen going the wrong way on the A66 near Middlesbrough.

He posted on X: “Devastated to hear that two police officers have lost their lives while on duty in Cleveland this morning, as well as five members of the public.

“My thoughts are with the families and loved ones of everyone involved, and with everyone at Cleveland Police.

“Thank you to the emergency services responding in incredibly difficult circumstances.

“I would urge people to avoid speculation at this time.”

Tees Valley mayor Ben Houchen described the crash on the A66 as “a horrible and tragic incident”, adding “our police officers are heroes”.

He told the Press Association: “A horrible and tragic incident in South Bank this morning and my thoughts are with those affected, their families and the emergency services who attended the scene.

“Our police officers are heroes who put everything on the line to protect us and I know all of Teesside will want to pay tribute to the officers and other emergency service workers involved for the bravery they have shown in responding to this incident.”

Cleveland police and crime commissioner Matt Storey said the crash on the A66, in which two police officers died, was “tragic” and “devastating”.

David Taylor and Stephen Martin, councillors for the Eston ward, where the crash happened, said they were “deeply saddened” by the “unimaginable tragedy”.

A post on their Facebook page read: “We are deeply saddened by the devastating news that seven people have lost their lives following a collision on the A66 at South Bank in the early hours of this morning.

“Those who died include two serving Cleveland Police officers travelling in a marked police vehicle and five members of the public travelling in a Volkswagen Passat.

“My heartfelt condolences go to the families, friends and loved ones of everyone who tragically lost their life.

“My thoughts are also with the officers’ colleagues across Cleveland Police, the wider policing family and all the emergency service personnel who attended such a distressing incident.

“This is an unimaginable tragedy that will be felt deeply throughout TS6 and communities across Cleveland and around the country.

“Absolutely heartbreaking.”

The chairwoman of Cleveland Police Federation said “words cannot describe the pain” following the death of two police officers in a crash on the A66.

“Our colleagues who should have been going home to their loved ones at the end of their shifts are not.

Shadow home secretary Chris Philp called for “time and space” for an investigation to be completed into the circumstances around the crash near Middlesbrough that killed seven people.

He said: “My thoughts are with the families and friends of those officers killed in the line of duty earlier today as well as those serving in Cleveland Police, the wider police family and all the emergency services who attend the scene.

“The police and IPOC must be given the time and space to complete their investigations without speculation.”

Crime and policing minister Sarah Jones said “we ask so much of our officers” after the crash on the A66, in which two police officers died.

She said on X: “I just spoke to the Chief Constable of Cleveland Police.

“We ask so much of our officers.

“My thoughts are with all those who have lost their lives – and their loved ones, friends and colleagues.

“I can only imagine the devastation they must be feeling.

“The IOPC will now lead the investigation into the circumstances of the incident.

“I would ask people to avoid speculation and allow the investigation to take its course.”

The footballer boyfriend of Irish heptathlon star Kate O’Connor has revealed how he raced to witness her European championship triumph after competing in his own fixture.

Georgie Kelly is a well-known figure among League of Ireland supporters, having built his reputation during an impressive goalscoring stint with Bohemians in 2021.

That purple patch secured Kelly a transfer to Rotherham United in 2022. Kelly currently plies his trade with Carlisle United in the National League, and he was representing his side last Saturday while his partner O’Connor shone at the European Athletics Championships.

And after featuring in Carlisle’s 1-1 away stalemate with Yeovil Town, Kelly then made a mad dash to Birmingham to arrive in time for his partner’s medal presentation.

“My hands would be sweating,” Kelly revealed to The Irish Times. “Especially the final jump in the high jump.

“I knew exactly where she was at. I knew she had to get over 1.86m. It was a huge jump for her because her shot put wasn’t going as well.

“My heart rate, God. How she manages stress is a gift in itself.

“What people might not notice, even in Tokyo last year [at the World Championships], there could be 50,000 in the stadium but only a few Irish dotted around. Not in Birmingham.

“There were thousands cheering her on. That was the first time she has experienced that. And there was new pressure on her. ‘Oh Kate is going to medal,’ people were saying. There was a lot to manage. I knew she was dealing with all that.

“She is something else. She thrives under pressure.”

Kelly boarded the Carlisle United team bus from Yeovil before making his own way to Birmingham’s Alexander Stadium.

“Yeovil was the worst possible venue to have to go to on Saturday. Aw, it’s a trek, right down south.

“My plan was to get to Birmingham for the medal ceremony on Saturday night. It was a surprise, I didn’t tell her I was coming.

“The bus dropped me off on the motorway and I got a taxi. I was there in decent enough time..”

Kelly and O’Connor first crossed paths when the striker was turning out for Dundalk, O’Connor’s hometown, in the League of Ireland.

The couple now regularly make the journey between England and Ireland to spend time together.

Kelly said: “We try not to let it go longer than a few weeks without one of us popping over.

“Belfast is a wee bit easier. I can fly in. She is not able to relocate her whole team of coaches, physios, nutritionists. We just make it work. Nip over and back.

“I have been on more Ryanair flights than I’ve ever wanted to be on.”

He added: “Kate is coming over to the glamorous Carlisle for a few weeks as she is finished for the season.

“We were checking the dates today for the Olympics in Los Angeles. End of July, early August, just when we’re coming back for preseason.”

Manchester United’s fans had endured a bad enough day on the banks of the River Humber when Hull City’s stadium announcer gleefully piped up midway through the second half.

He had “an important announcement” for them.

Two trains back to Manchester from the city centre station had been cancelled.

The roar from the home fans matched that for their side’s two first-half goals that sealed a first ever top-flight win over United – and first in league meetings since a Second Division encounter in 1974.

“You should have come in a taxi,” they sang.

Football supporters can be a cruel breed.

As they were kicking their heels waiting for a train to take them back over the Pennines, the portion of the 2,400-strong visiting contingent that had chosen that mode of transport would have struggled to find any redeeming features.

“They didn’t create much, which was the biggest worry,” legendary former United striker Wayne Rooney told BBC Sport.

“When you play a promoted team, it’s always difficult. First game of the season away from home, United just didn’t seem ready for it.”

Former Newcastle striker Alan Shearer felt it was a fitness issue.

Well, I have seen Manchester United in pre-season; all six games of it.

I wouldn’t say it was a fitness issue. Until last weekend’s defeat by AC Milan in Poland, no-one was questioning the fitness of Carrick’s squad and six of his starting line-up returned to training on 9 July.

It is an opinion though – and everyone is entitled to them; just as they are entitled to say Carrick’s side were toothless in attack, before and after Marcus Rashford’s half-time introduction for his first United appearance since December 2024.

They are also entitled to say United don’t seem to be able to defend solidly against opponents who play with wing-backs, as AC Milan did last week and Hull on Saturday.

Skipper Bruno Fernandes felt it was a pressing issue as he told TNT: “Same mistakes as we did last season in every away game.

“We give too much of the ball to them. In the first 20 minutes the goalkeeper had more touches on the ball, too much time.

“We need to press a little bit more, be more aggressive, and set-plays – we need to work on it, to be more aggressive and try not to concede these types of goals.”

Set-pieces were a particular area Hull boss Sergej Jakirovic said he had identified to attack in the build-up to the game.

Slowly but surely they seem to be stepping into more public appearances – and Phil says ‘they could turn out to be the royals’ secret weapons at a time when they need fresh legs’.

It’s an important point for William to consider when keeping the future of his monarchy in mind – especially with the unexpected return of Harry and Meghan.

It is understood the Sussexes will remain non-working royals but the future is not yet clear for their children Archie, seven, and Lilibet, five.

But until it is understood what the future holds for their roles within the Firm, the Prince of Wales has a reliable young pair of hands to be by his side and help guide his own children George, 13, Charlotte, 11, and Louis, eight.

‘I think Lady Louise Windsor and James, Earl of Wessex both come across as charming and intelligent royal family members and seem well-rounded and down to earth,’ he explained.

‘That’s a testament to their parents who have tried to give them a normal childhood as far as that’s possible when you are in the line of succession.

‘The big question is whether either of them wants to join “The Firm” and become working royals or pursue private careers and interests.

‘At the moment it looks as though James wants to become a farmer as he’s off to agricultural college having spent the summer working on the farm at Sandringham courtesy of the King.

‘And Louise is to take a gap year, possibly travelling, having just graduated.

‘The biggest problem facing the monarchy in my opinion is that with the former Prince Andrew off the scene, as well as Harry and Meghan, they have become too slimmed down.’

Phil said there is certainly room for more of a youthful presence in the firm.

‘The King is battling cancer, Queen Camilla is 80 next year, Princess Anne has just turned 76, and so everything is resting on William and Catherine until their three children grow up,’ he shared.

‘In recent years they have been ably supported by the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh, but will they want their children to follow in their footsteps or go their own way?

‘If I were William I would want to try and encourage them to at least take up some of the slack and perform some royal duties.

‘He and Catherine, who of course has had her own cancer fight, can’t do everything.

‘I’m sure that mum Sophie would only want what is best for her children.

‘After all, she nearly died giving birth to Louise, and her happiness is the most important thing to her.

‘Both Louise and James could take titles and be a Prince and Princess, but they have not done this so far, and they may prefer to stay out of the limelight.’

While he believes Edward and Sophie will not put needless pressure on their children, there ‘was just a hint that they may be gently nudging them into the spotlight the other day when they posed up with Louise and her boyfriend Felix da Silva-Clamp on a visit to the theatre’.

‘They met and fell for each other at St Andrews University, just like William and Catherine, so there must be something in the Scottish air!’ Phil added.

‘Felix was sitting proudly in the front row when Louise graduated recently when she was photographed with her parents and he made an appearance on a royal Instagram post so he is clearly now firmly in the fold.

Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney has said a fresh wave of US tariffs on Canada is a “miscalculation” designed to “hurt and divide us”, after trade talks broke down late on Friday.

Carney said he walked away from a deal because he was not prepared to “compromise Canada’s sovereignty”.

“They asked too much and they offered too little,” Carney said in a speech to Canadians on Saturday morning.

The prime minister added that Canada will match US tariffs “dollar-for-dollar” from 8 September, including levies on steel, dairy, appliances and electronics. Donald Trump has yet to comment.

Both countries were optimistic of a deal earlier in the week, but talks collapsed on Friday night after both sides accused the other of making last-minute changes.

Now that talks have broken down, Canada will be hit with new 50% US tariffs on a range of Canadian goods, in addition to existing US tariffs on Canadian steel, aluminium, automobiles and lumber.

The prime minister said Canada was retaliating “reluctantly” to protect its interests. Details of the counter-measures will be released in the coming days, he said.

Carney’s speech on Saturday is his first address to Canadians after he announced late on Friday night that deal would not be reached, accusing the Americans of making “last-minute changes” that were “unfair” and “uneconomic”.

US negotiators, meanwhile, accused Canada of making “new demands and walk backs” on terms which had been agreed earlier in the week.

Cameron Diaz surfaced in Santa Barbara, California on Thursday – just three months after announcing she had welcomed her third child with husband Benji Madden.

The actress, 53, was joined by fellow Hollywood star Zoe Saldana, 48, during the leisurely afternoon stroll.

Diaz, who looked noticeably makeup-free, had her signature blonde hair tucked into a wide-brimmed straw sunhat.   

She donned a casual ensemble for her meet-up with Saldana, which consisted of a white T-shirt, baggy black jeans and brown Birkenstock-style sandals.

Diaz had the sleeves of a gray sweater tied around her neck as she chatted with the Oscar-winner.

Saldana was dressed similarly to Diaz in slouchy blue jeans, sandals and a layered tank top.

She kept her eyes hidden behind a pair of large designer shades and her brunette hair was slicked back in a tight ponytail. 

Diaz and Saldana have been close friends for years, with the latter revealing in 2024 that her three sons call the Charlie’s Angels star ‘auntie’ in Spanish.

Saldana made the reveal while speaking directly to Diaz during her speech at Elle’s Women in Hollywood event that year.

‘Cameron, I am so happy. I’m so inspired by watching you really craft both your massive career and your beautifully private life exactly your own way,’ she said.

‘It is an honor to know you and what a gift for my kids to call you Tia, and I call you friend,’ she added as she referred to her sons Cy, Bowie and Zen, whom she shares with longtime husband Marco Perego. 

‘I love you. Thank you for being [on the] line for me, for us and for me.’ 

The pair’s outing comes just months after the arrival of Diaz and Madden’s surprise third child.

The couple, who have been married since 2015, are also parents to daughter Raddix, six, and son Cardinal, two.

‘You were like, “You’re going to have a child if it’s the last thing you do! Yes you are.” I was not convinced I was going to,’ Diaz recalled.

‘Of all the people, you just had to be a mother,’ Paltrow chimed in. ‘Not everybody wants to do it and that’s great but I knew you were one, I just had to pull her out of you.’ 

Diaz then added: ‘I love you for that, I think about it all the time and I totally give you credit. You and Benji, the two of you, if it wasn’t for him I obviously wouldn’t [have become a mother].’
