16 Cotton Dresses That Carry Themselves
Outfit Details: Merlette Dress, Toteme Bag, Call It By Your Name Loafers (sold out, more colors here), Celine Sunglasses (sold out, similar here, less expensive here)
There is a certain type of dress I reach for in August, when I still want cotton, bare ankles, and the ease of a sandal, but with a shape that feels more memorable than a simple sundress. Something with volume, that stands away from the body, catches the breeze, and gives the dress a shape that feels styled before anything else is added. It’s the difference between something that simply slips on and something that carries itself through the day.
I love when that volume comes through softly, in fabric that gathers, lifts, or swings without feeling overworked. A white dress looks almost sculptural with peplum ruffles, while a dark cocoa shade adds a dose of drama to a maxi. Cotton has a longer calendar than it gets credit for, which is why these are the dresses I want now and still imagine wearing well into fall.

A Great Start To Your Working Wardrobe

What are the essential pieces in a professional wardrobe? Whether you’re building a work wardrobe from scratch or updating one you’ve worn for years, these are the work wardrobe essentials we come back to again and again. Think of them as the building blocks: versatile work pants, polished shoes, blazers and other third pieces, dresses, skirts, and tops that work in a range of professional settings.
How we choose our work wardrobe essentials: Since 2008, Corporette has been covering workwear for professional women, with regular roundups (our “Hunts”) and deep dives into specific categories. Over the years, we’ve noticed that certain pieces come up again and again: the holy-grail work pants readers buy in multiple colors, the polished blazer you reach for again and again, the washable blouse that’s actually easy to care for. Some are longtime reader favorites (there was a skirt so popular we called it The Skirt!); others we’ve discovered while hunting for the best options in a specific category. This is where we collect those greatest hits — the work wardrobe essentials we think are worth knowing about.
Other Roundups of Wardrobe Essentials for Work
You may also want to check out the Hunts we’ve done for currently trendy workwear, as well as our The Ultimate Guide to Business Casual for Women.

Workwear Essentials for a Conservative Office
You can wear almost everything on this list to every kind of office — but our specialty here at Corporette has always been in what to wear to conservative, corporate offices like those at law firms, banks, and consulting agencies.
If you’re moving to a more business casual office, check out our advice on how to adapt a conservative style for a business casual office — and check out our guide to business casual for women.
Sleek, Polished Office Shoes
Some of the best-selling pumps that are great first bets if you’re on the hunt include these classic black heels for business attire:
Hunting for comfortable work heels? We’ve got a whole guide just for that, but as of 2026 some of our favorites include Marc Fisher LTD, Sam Edelman, M.M.LaFleur, and Cole Haan. On the pricier side, check out Ferragamo, Stuart Weitzman, and Sarah Flint. For comfort-first styles, look to Vionic, Sofft, and Naturalizer.

The Best Pants for Work

Stylish Dress Pants for Women
There are a TON of great options for pants for work right now, with lots under $100 and almost everything being machine washable. (Check out our tips here on HOW to wash your washable pants to help with durability and help you avoid ironing…) There are stretchy options to keep you comfortable all day long (like the “comfortable magic pants” the readers love!) and more substantial, stiffer options that will look crisp all day and hold you in a bit more (a bit like this one). (If you really like washable clothes, check our roundup of the best brands for washable workwear over at CorporetteMoms.) Below, some of our favorites from our roundup of the best pants for work:
Great Wide-Leg Pants to Wear to Work
Hunting for wide-leg pants to wear to work? General favorites include pleated pairs like Aritzia, Favorite Daughter, Spanx, and Abercrombie*, with flat-front pairs from M.M.LaFleur. We’ve also shared our thoughts on what shoes to wear with wide-leg pants!

Polished Pull-On Pants for Work
Great Blazers for Work: The Perfect Third Piece
Classic Blazers to Wear as Separates
Hunting for a luxe statement blazer? Latest favorites include Smythe, include McQueen, L’Agence, Veronica Beard, The Fold, Armani, and Anine Bing.
Sweater Jackets for the Office: Cozy but Polished
Another great wardrobe essential that’s become popular in recent years: sweater jackets for the office!
Lady Jackets for the Office
Some of our latest favorite lady jackets for work in 2026 still include knit jackets such as those from ba&sh, MMLF, or Boden… but in general the style has gotten much more structured, closer to a Chanel-style jacket for work. On the budget side of things, check out J.Crew, Tuckernuck (XXS-XXXL), J.Crew Factory, and Ann Taylor… on the splurgey side check out L’Agence, Veronica Beard, St. John, and (of course!) Chanel.

The Best Dresses for the Office
Polished Tops and Blouses for Work
Crisp Button-Front Blouses for Work
A crisp women’s dress shirt is a great layering piece for beneath a blazer, a sweater, or more. If you find that button downs don’t work with your bust, but still want to wear them, do check out our roundup of boutique shops specializing in busty blouses — you can also check out our advice on how to wear a button-front to work.
Silk button-fronts can also be great for work, but for slightly different reasons — namely, they’re easier for layering beneath a suit, cardigan, or more — but be warned they can be higher maintenance.
For these reasons, readers often note that they prefer popover blouses because they tend to be washable and without the problem of gaping buttons. Finally, there also blouses that are essentially T-Shirts (in silk, jersey, or other fabrics). Some of our favorites from each category:

Short-Sleeved Sweaters
Short-sleeved sweaters can be great because they don’t present the layering problems of longer sleeved sweaters, and they can be a bit more opaque than regular t-shirts, particularly if you want a light or white color. They also don’t have the gaping problems of blouses.
Sleeveless Tops for Work
Sleeveless tops, shells and blouses can be great alternatives to sleeved blouses and tees, particularly if you want a layered look with clean lines. These are some of our favorites — you can see our whole roundup of sleeveless tops.
T-Shirts for Work
T-shirts are great in summer, of course, but they’re also great for layering under cardigans and blazers as seasons change. Some of our favorite tees for layering include:
Work Bags
If you’re looking for a great bag for work, there are four main categories as I see them, with a lot of overlap between the categories:
- a leather tote bag — polished, professional for daily use; ideally large enough to fit a letter-size folder inside
- a nylon travel bag — lightweight, washable, durable — could be a tote or backpack
- a laptop tote — actually big enough and sturdy enough to carry a 13″ – 16″ laptop comfortably (which rules out a surprising number of otherwise great work bags)
- backpacks — can be great for ergonomics, commuting, and more (we’ve actually had a whole discusion on tote vs. backpack)
- (We’ve also discussed the best LUXURY work bags for when you want to splurge!)
Some of our favorites from each category…
(Looking for a luxury work bag? Here’s our latest roundup…)
Stylish Purses the Readers Love
Hunting for a great professional purse? In 2026, readers are loving affordable crossbody bags like those from Cuyana, Lo & Sons, and Madewell — also check out Clare V’s bags.
In terms of a designer bag to suit your life as a professional, readers have been loving affordable(ish) luxury brands like Polène, Tory Burch, Strathberry, DeMellier, and Mansur Gavriel, as well as more designer bags like Chloé (particularly the Marcie line) and Mulberry. (If money is no object, Loewe and Bottega Venetta are always worth a look!)

Cold Weather Basics for Work
Cold weather is another beast — we’ve also discussed how to buy a great winter coat, warm winter dress pants, great winter blazers, and what I’ve always called “the festive blazer” — a velvet or other “fancy” blazer that you can wear to holiday events during/immediately after the workday when you want to keep a blush of authority.
Winter Coats To Wear with Suits and Other Conservative Office Clothes
Winter coats are a must if you live in a cold climate — the right topper will not only keep you warm but also stylish (you may want to size up for a coat you’re planning on wear over a suit!)
Some of our favorite professional winter coats for women include J.Crew, Sam Edelman, Aritzia, L.L.Bean, Quince, and Cole Haan. On the splurgier side, do check out Mackage, Soia & Kyo, Ted Baker, Eileen Fisher, Fleurette, and Cinzia Rocca. We’ve also rounded up our favorite washable winter coats!

Waterproof, Weatherproof Shoes for Work
If your commute involves puddles, slush, dirt, or more, a great waterproof, weatherproof shoe is essential! Some favorite options over the years include:
The Corporette® Guide to Suits
Whether you need a suit for an interview, for courtroom attire, or simply wear suits often for work, we’ve covered them all. Do check out our Guide to Interview Suits for lots of basic guidelines on suiting; we’ve also done a big overview of the best women’s suits by price range (with separate roundups for plus sizes, tall sizes, petite sizes, and more), as well as discussed the best business suits to wear while you’re expecting.
Our mid-range suit picks are a great place to start if you’re interviewing for a conservative office where you’ll be wearing the suit beyond the interview.
Mid-Range Suits for Women
These suits are reliably under $500 for two pieces — but they’re going to be a bit higher quality than more affordable suiting options in the first tier.

Coffee Break: Vida Shoulder Bag

I feel like we haven’t seen a larger shoulder bag in years — it feels like bag sizes have been S, XS, XXXS… and then XL. This signature bag from Veronica Beard is a nice departure from that, and it’s out in a bunch of fun new colors, including this cool snakeprint version. There’s also a fabulous patchwork one that would be great if you wear a lot of navy.
The suede bag features “curved, Western-inspired panel details snake-embossed leather,” which I LOVE. There’s something reminiscent of Art Deco or Gestalt images about the cutouts. There’s the braided strap to use it as a handbag or shoulder bag, as well as a crossbody strap that you can add.
The bag is $750, at Veronica Beard (other versions in solid colors are as low as $595, though). You can also find it at Nordstrom!

Claire’s Life: Hyatt Celebrates 80 Years of the Polar Bears at Inkwell Beach
While on Martha’s Vineyard, I attended Hyatt’s event honoring 80 years of one of the island’s most storied traditions: the Polar Bears.

Formed in 1946 by a group of African American seasonal residents who wanted to exercise together in the water, the Polar Bears have provided 80 years of physical fitness and fellowship at Inkwell Beach in Oak Bluffs, the first desegregated beach on Martha’s Vineyard. The group began when the two Black O’Brien sisters bought a cottage and ran it as a bed and breakfast; nine Black guests who had come to the Vineyard to work became the first Polar Bears. Every summer since, from July 4 through Labor Day, members gather every morning at 7:30 to exercise, swim, and have fun in the water.

At the celebration, I connected with Malik Yoba, Hyatt’s Tyronne Stoudemire, and more, honoring the exercise, meditation, prayer, and play that define the tradition. Longtime group leader Caroline Hunter, pictured below, has been taking the plunge for nearly 30 years and remains one of its most beloved figures.

The gathering was a reminder of what this tradition represents: joy, resilience, and a legacy that continues to bring people together, 80 years strong.
