Sheffield Wednesday set to make "critical decision" as takeover bid launched

Sheffield Wednesday are now facing a “critical decision” following a fresh bid from one of their takeover candidates, according to reports.

Kris Wigfield confirms EFL decision in fresh statement

It’s been a tough time for Sheffield Wednesday, but Kris Wigfield at least had some good news for fans earlier today. The co-administrator confirmed that the EFL’s Independent Club Financial Review Panel (CFRP) has now concluded its disciplinary review into historic financial breaches and decided against issuing a further point deduction, whilst also issuing an update on the sale of the club.

Wigfield said: “We welcome the CFRP’s decision not to apply a further points deduction. We appreciate the constructive engagement throughout what has understandably been a challenging period. This conclusion provides much‑needed certainty and allows us to focus fully on stabilising the Club and planning for the future.

“Understand” – Miller shares “crucial” Sheffield Wednesday takeover bids update

Good news for the Owls.

We recognise that this season has tested the patience of our supporters. Transparency remains our priority, and we hope that drawing a clear line under these matters enables everyone to concentrate on supporting the team.

“I also want to update you on the sales process. We understand the frustration caused by limited communication at this stage, but periods of confidentiality are essential to protect the integrity of the process.

“Work continues behind the scenes as we work toward identifying a preferred bidder and genuine progress is being made. Once that stage is reached, the EFL will need to complete its regulatory checks.”

On that front, reports earlier this week claimed that Sheffield Wednesday are close to naming an exclusive buyer with both Mike Ashley and John McEvoy in a two-horse race to complete a takeover.

Further reports have now added another twist. According to BBC Sport’s Rob Staton, Sheffield Wednesday have received a bid from the Storch group, who have joined forces with McEvoy, and now face a “critical decision”.

Storch group launch Sheffield Wednesday offer

Staton provided an update on the situation, claiming that a bid has been made today by the Storch group as Sheffield Wednesday close in on finally welcoming a new era to the club.

Whether the process will now advance remains to be seen. The same can be said for Ashley’s pursuit of the club. The former Newcastle United owner reportedly made the lowest offer for the club, but is still in the running.

As for the Storch group, with their wealth backed up by their work in the aviation industry and McEvoy no stranger to sports investment, they could yet emerge as the most suitable party.

The Owls may be destined for League One, but at the very least they should be able to put the Dejphon Chansiri era behind them once and for all.
