FIFA Accepts NFF Mass Resignations, Begins Talks on Nigerian Football Reforms

Published

on

FIFA has formally accepted the mass resignations of key officials of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and has reaffirmed its commitment to working with the Nigerian government, the NFF and the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to reform football administration in the country.

The development followed a high-level meeting at FIFA House in Zurich, Switzerland, on Tuesday, where representatives of FIFA, CAF, the National Sports Commission (NSC) and the NFF discussed the ongoing leadership transition and plans to restructure Nigerian football.

The meeting agreed that talks should continue to develop a clear reform roadmap covering the short, medium and long term.

The aim is to build a more inclusive and properly organised NFF, with an environment that promotes stability, transparency and effective administration.

The parties also agreed that any reform process must follow the relevant FIFA, CAF and NFF statutes, regulations and governance principles.

The Nigerian delegation was led by NSC Chairman, Mallam Shehu Dikko. He was joined by NSC Director-General, Hon. Bukola Olopade; former NFF President and former FIFA Council Member Amaju Pinnick, OFR; NFF Acting General Secretary, Dr Emmanuel Ikpeme; and NFF Director of Legal Services, Okey Obi, Esq.

CAF Second Vice-President Kurt Okraku and FIFA Director of Member Associations for Africa, Gelson Fernandes, also took part in the meeting.

Speaking after the meeting, Dikko described the engagement as an important step towards rebuilding the administration of Nigerian football.

“Mutual engagement among the National Sports Commission, the NFF administration and the Confederation of African Football is ongoing with FIFA on the comprehensive reforms of Nigeria football, including agreeing a roadmap going forward in accordance with the relevant rules, regulations and Statutes,” Dikko said.

He added that Nigeria’s football administration would emerge stronger from the process.

“There is no doubt Nigeria Football will emerge much better and properly-structured after the conclusion of this process.”

The FIFA meeting comes at an important time for Nigerian football following the recent departures of senior NFF officials and the suspension of the federation’s planned electoral process.

With FIFA, CAF, the NSC and the NFF now involved in the consultations, attention will turn to the structure, responsibilities and timeline of the reform process.

One of the key priorities will be to ensure that the new structure has broad support from football stakeholders and provides stable and accountable leadership.

The outcome of the Zurich meeting is also expected to influence the next stage of the NFF’s leadership transition, including the future electoral process and the emergence of a new leadership structure.

For Nigerian football, the major challenge now is to turn the high-level talks into practical reforms that will improve administration, strengthen accountability and restore confidence in the country’s football leadership.

Conroy: Flames’ Jonathan Huberdeau has setback in surgery recovery

Published

on

Training camp is mere weeks away, but when Jonathan Huberdeau will be ready to take to the ice again is still a mystery.

“I think this is a major surgery, so he had a little bit of a setback, maybe two weeks ago, with his skating,” Conroy said. “We just want to make sure we do the right thing for him. If it is to take a little bit more time, and have him 100 per cent feeling good about the hip, that’s what we’re going to do.”

The GM added that Huberdeau’s progress in the gym was still very positive, but the team wants to err on the side of caution when it comes to preparing for physical contact.

Huberdeau was shut down in late January with the Flames firmly out of the playoff mix in order to address chronic hip pain. He underwent the procedure in March.

“It’s still on his schedule,” Conroy added. “We’re not going to rush him into something, but we feel at the beginning of the year, he’s going to be pretty close. It’s just when, we’re not 100 per cent sure of yet.”

The 32-year-old is entering the fourth year of an eight-year, $84 million contract that runs through the 2030-31 season.

He finished last season with 10 goals and 15 assists in 50 games.

How Coco Gauff overcame nerves to make strong start to US Open title tilt

Published

on

Coco Gauff began her bid for a second US Open title with a nerveless win over Zeynep Sonmez.

The American fourth seed, champion in 2023, was tested in the second set by Turkish outsider Sonmez but came through 6-3 6-4.

She said: “I was nervous in the tunnel, and then for some reason when the warm-up started, it went away. I think it showed the first game how I came out serving really well.

“I don’t know what put my mind at ease. I think just maybe the confidence I had this week and knowing, like, you know, the opponent would have to play a really high level and me a really low level, maybe for it to not go my way.

“But Zeynep brought that high level today. Yeah, I was just happy to get out of that second set.”

Second seed Elena Rybakina also advanced after beating teenage American wild card Thea Frodin 6-3 6-2.

Frodin once played Serena Williams’ double in the tennis scenes during the Oscar-winning film about the lives of Serena and her sister Venus, King Richard, starring Will Smith.

She said: “I actually have not met her yet. But hopefully I can get the chance soon to get the opportunity to meet her.

“I saw that Will Smith reposted one of my posts, so that was pretty cool and a cool experience.”

The 29-year-old, seeded 12th, swatted a ball in frustration after losing a point, and then turned in horror after realising where it had flown.

She raised her arms in apology and was given a warning by the umpire, but opponent Yulia Putintseva clearly felt the punishment should have been harsher.

However, Kazakhstani Putintseva eventually won the match over three sets to send Bencic packing anyway.

In the men’s draw, fifth seed Flavio Cobolli needed five sets to see off Argentinian Francisco Comesana, while ninth seed Taylor Fritz – one of the big hopes for a home success in New York this year – beat fellow American Darwin Blanch in three.

Colin Kaepernick says NFL blackballing him: ‘I watch college football’

Published

on

Colin Kaepernick sits for a portrait on June 12, 2023, Los Angeles, Calif.Colin Kaepernick sits for a portrait on June 12, 2023, Los Angeles, Calif.

A decade after his stance against racial injustice made headlines far beyond the sports world, former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick says that while his mission goes on, his love for the NFL is long gone.

Speaking with NBC News, the 38-year-old admitted he no longer watches the NFL, saying, “I’m not gonna support an organization that one, is actively blackballing me, but two, has targeted my brothers who have been protesting as part of this as well. I watch college football.”

During the 2016 preseason, Kaepernick and then-49ers teammate Eric Reid kneeled during the national anthem before a game. While he had previously sat on the bench during the anthem earlier that preseason, the image of him and Reid on a knee while their teammates stood for the anthem quickly circulated around the world.

At the time, he told the NFL Network, “I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses Black people and people of color. To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder.”

Kaepernick, who led the 49ers to the Super Bowl to conclude the 2012 season, was out of the league after 2016 and would never play again. He and Reid would later sue the NFL alleging collusion in keeping them out of the league. They settled in 2019.

Kaepernick has since devoted his time to initiatives such as Know Your Rights camps, whose aim is “to advance the liberation and well-being of Black and Brown communities through education, self-empowerment, mass-mobilization and the creation of new systems that elevate the next generation of change leaders,” and helping pay for independent autopsies for people who died as a result of incidents involving police.

Asked by NBC if he thinks about his football legacy, Kaepernick said, “I don’t think about legacy a whole lot. What I think about is what are the areas that I can do work that I think are going to have an impact and help us move towards that future together. At the end of the day, people will decide what that legacy is, and hopefully that’s a positive one.”

Kaepernick wrote a memoir, “The Perilous Fight,” that will be available on Sept. 15.

TJ Rumfield homered in the seventh inning to break a tie and the Colorado Rockies beat the Baltimore Orioles 4-2 in Denver on Tuesday night.

Adael Amador also went deep and singled and Jake McCarthy and Brett Sullivan had two hits each for Colorado (53-86), which snapped a franchise-worst 10-game home losing streak.

It was 2-2 in the seventh when Mickey Moniak reached on an error by second baseman Jackson Holliday. One out later, Rumfield homered off Luis De Leon (0-1) to give the Rockies the lead. It was his 14th of the season.

Jaden Hill (1-3) pitched an inning of relief and Jordan Romano picked up his 14th save.

Holliday homered among his three hits for Baltimore (69-70), whose four-game winning streak ended. The Orioles fell 1 1/2 games behind Cleveland for the final wild-card spot in the American League.

Colorado initially went ahead with a two-out rally in the third inning against starter Kyle Bradish. Amador gave the Rockies a 1-0 lead with his second homer of the season, and Zac Veen nearly made it back-to-back home runs when he tripled off the top of the wall in right.

McCarthy singled up the middle to drive in Veen.

Bradish gave up two runs on six hits in five innings.

Baltimore got a run back in the fourth inning. Carlos Narvaez led off with a single and went to third on Pete Alonso’s one-out hit. Gunnar Henderson hit a sharp grounder to first that Rumfield snared and touched the bag for the out before getting Alonso in a rundown to end the inning.

Narvaez scored before Alonso was tagged out.

The Orioles threatened in the fifth when they loaded the bases with two outs to chase starter Gabriel Hughes. Brennan Bernardino came on to retire Henderson on a popout.

Hughes allowed one run on four hits in 4 2/3 innings.

Holliday evened things in the seventh with a two-out solo homer to right, his seventh of the season.

Borussia Dortmund Cruise Past Fifth-Tier Opponents In German Cup Opener

Borussia Dortmund cruised to a comfortable 5-0 win over amateur fifth-division HEBC Hamburg in their German Cup opener on Tuesday, with 18-year-old Samuele Inacio bagging a first-half brace. Daniel Svensson and Fabio Silva got on the scoresheet for the visitors, who also benefitted from an own goal from HEBC defender Janek Wrede. Wrede, the club captain, works as a scout for first division Hamburg. HEBC goalkeeper Jannik Schoon, who expertly saved a long-range effort from Germany midfielder Felix Nmecha, works as a teacher aide but told Sky Germany he had already taken Wednesday off work.

The amateur side moved the match from their 2,500-seat home to the 57,000-strong Volkspark Stadion, home of Bundesliga side Hamburg.

Despite surrendering home advantage with much of the crowd bathed in Dortmund yellow, the official attendance was 45,917, a German Cup record for a match involving a fifth-tier team, while much of the revenue will flow to HEBC.

Dortmund coach Niko Kovac made seven changes, although deadline-day newcomer Ethan Nwaneri arrived too late on his season-long loan from Arsenal to take part.

HEBC held the 2024 Champions League finalists at bay for the opening half-hour but Dortmund’s pressure told, with the hosts conceding an own goal in the 33rd minute before Svensson netted three minutes later.

Teenage forward Inacio then bagged a brace before half-time to put any hopes of a shock upset well beyond doubt.

Former Wolves forward Silva added a fifth just before the hour mark to add gloss to Dortmund’s victory.

On Wednesday, holders Bayern Munich play at second-tier Osnabrueck.

Amid ‘very long meetings’ and running chess world, has Viswanathan Anand lost ‘hunger’ to win? | Exclusive | Chess News

Amid 'very long meetings' and running chess world, has Viswanathan Anand lost 'hunger' to win? | Exclusive

NEW DELHI: The English vocabulary sometimes feels the loss for words while describing what Viswanathan Anand is to India and its chess legacy. There is a particular kind of stillness that follows the Chennai-born Grandmaster into a room, the stillness of a man who solved most of what chess could throw at him decades ago and has nothing left to prove to anyone in it.For over a month now, that stillness has been sitting in a very different chair. On July 24, 2026, Anand became interim President of FIDE, world chess’s governing body, after Arkady Dvorkovich voluntarily stepped back from his duties under European Union and Swiss sanctions. The role is temporary by design as Anand’s term runs out with the FIDE presidential elections on September 26.But for the two months he holds it, the man who has spent a lifetime being chess’s most recognisable player is also, quite literally, running the sport.“Fairly, (it’s) kind of what I expected,” the 56-year-old tells TimesofIndia.com during an exclusive interaction, with that familiar half-smile doing most of the talking before the next sentences catch up.“It’s more work than being deputy president. When I was the deputy, I only had to step in when Arkady (Dvorkovich) couldn’t make it. Now, in fact, I have to conduct a lot of the federation. But I’ve been doing it out of India mostly.”The extra weight of countless responsibilities hasn’t meant more miles, though.“Actually, I’ve travelled less, but because I had already made plans like this. I’ve been attending many, many more meetings, quite often, very long Zoom meetings with lots of people from all over the world to discuss FIDE matters,” added the former five-time world champion. The intensity, he says, has already peaked and passed.“There was a period last week when that all peaked,” he revealed. “Now everything, the agenda, is set for the General Assembly in Samarkand at the end of the year. For the last few days, it’s been a bit lighter.”And with that, amid the Zoom calls and federation business, the game of 64 squares has called in a more familiar manner.Anand returns to the Global Chess League (GCL) this year with Alaskan Knights. None of that administrative weight, it turns out, has dulled his appetite for the board.“I can tell you my hunger for the GCL trophy is still there. I would very much love for us, though I’m playing with Alaskan Knights this year, to pull that off. I’m very motivated, and I hope to do my best and get us into the final first,” the Grandmaster, who was one of the most prominent faces of Ganges Grandmasters for the last three seasons, remarked.

“It doesn’t matter what you did in your career. If you’re playing this tournament, then you enjoy it, and you try to play. The GCL is not the kind of event, typical event, that I used to play in. It is really a new kind of experience. For those 10 days to two weeks, I really enjoy myself.”It may be a new team this year, but the fundamentals have not changed for Anand. “Many players in the GCL have already changed teams a couple of times. I think once I go there and meet my teammates, on the first day itself, it’ll feel normal. I have played with Arjun before; two years ago, he was my teammate. There are familiar faces, and you’ll just adjust,” he remarked.

Generally, I stick to my routine, that’s all. It’s not like I will keep a lot of FIDE meetings

Balancing a federation’s crisis, family matters, and then chess, on paper, may look like a nightmare. But ask Anand, and then see the stillness follow.“Generally, I stick to my routine, that’s all. It’s not like I will keep a lot of FIDE meetings; if there’s some FIDE emergency, I might take a decision quickly, but otherwise I don’t expect to have long meetings while I’m there. I focus very much on the GCL,” he told this website, adding that he doesn’t plan days in advance so much as meet them as they come.“I know that I have to play against somebody tomorrow and I will get ready for it.”Within weeks, the presidency will pass to someone else. Until then, world chess is being run by a man who, when the meetings end, still just wants to play. And according to Anand, the play, on offer between September 5-13 in Bengaluru, will be as competitive as “anywhere else”.ALSO READ: ‘Praggnanandhaa is No. 1 in the world’: Viswanathan Anand after India’s first Grand Chess Tour title“Of course, they are (competitive). Because of the kind of openings they play, you could think, ‘Oh, they’re not taking it seriously.’ But in fact, they’re simply adapting their approach for the faster time control, for the pressure of watching your teammates and making decisions based on the match situation,” he concluded. “Once you take into account the different atmosphere, they are just as competitive as they are anywhere else.

Barcelona Bring In Gabriel Jesus From Arsenal, Loan Out Marc Casado

Published

on

Barcelona signed Brazilian forward Gabriel Jesus from Arsenal on Tuesday on a deal until 2029, after they were unable to pry Julian Alvarez from Atletico Madrid. “Barcelona and Arsenal have reached a deal for the Brazilian striker Gabriel Jesus,” said the Catalan club in a statement, with Spanish media reporting that they paid the Gunners around 10 million euros ($11.5m). Jesus arrives to bolster an attack weakened by the departures of Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres earlier this summer. Spanish champions Barca pursued Alvarez through the summer but Atletico refused to negotiate with the Catalan giants.

“I’m not offended,” said Jesus, when asked how he felt to be Barca’s plan B after Alvarez.

“I have the chance to be here at Barcelona, I had a chance 10 years ago and life took me in another direction, but now I can be here and it’s a dream for me.

“I always want to do the best I can, I’m a guy who works hard, I know my qualities, but work I think always pays off.”

Barcelona were prepared to end the transfer window without adding another number nine, with winger Raphinha scoring five goals in three games playing through the middle, but ultimately opted to bring in Jesus.

“I was a little surprised we had the opportunity to get him,” Hansi Flick told reporters Monday after Barca thrashed Rayo Vallecano 5-2 in La Liga, which Jesus watched from the stands at Camp Nou.

“I really love him. I like his style to play football. It fits with our style. I think he can help us a lot in games.

“For us, he can be important, so thanks to (sporting director) Deco because again he made an excellent job.”

The 29-year-old Brazilian suffered a serious knee injury in January 2025, disrupting his career with Arsenal, where he was behind Kai Havertz and Viktor Gyokeres in Mikel Arteta’s pecking order.

He scored 32 goals at Arsenal in four seasons, after bagging 95 at Manchester City in the six years before that.

“I’ve had a bit of a tough time these past two years, but apart from that, everyone knows my quality,” added Jesus.

“I’m doing very well, very well physically,” he continued. “The knee is no longer a problem. I recovered very well and returned to playing very well with Arsenal.

“My knee and my body are fine, I’m ready to give my best.”

Jesus is Barcelona’s seventh signing of the summer, following Anthony Gordon, Karim Adeyemi, Jesse Bisiwu, Joao Cancelo, Rodri and Dominik Livakovic.

Barcelona also confirmed a late loan deal for midfielder Marc Casado, who joins Deportivo La Coruna until the end of the season.

English Premier League clubs flexed their financial muscle once again on deadline day, spending a mind-boggling USD 4.7 billion on players over the summer. Manchester City matched the all-time British transfer record to sign Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernandez from Chelsea for a fee of 125 million pounds (USD 169 million) in the final hours of the transfer window. Chelsea and Tottenham also spent well over USD 400 million in the summer transfer window, proving why England is in a league of its own compared to other top leagues in Europe when it comes to financial pull.

In comparison to England, the combined expenditure of Europe’s remaining top five leagues like Spain, Germany, France, and Italy reached a cumulative sum of USD 3.8 billion spent over the summer.

The fee for Fernandez is a joint British record, equalling the amount Liverpool paid last year for Alexander Isak.
