8 Greatest Heist Movies of All Time, Ranked
What makes a heist film thrilling and exciting? It is not always the robbery itself but often the elaborate planning, the rising tension, and the final execution that toys with the viewer’s patience, making them constantly wonder, “Will they get away with it?” For decades now, the best heist films have demonstrated the power to sweep viewers off their feet with stylish getaways, slick antiheroes, and a pursuit so big that it can tempt the audience as much as it tempts the characters.
While some focus on the detailed planning, others emphasize the extended exposition of the heist itself or the turbulent aftermath. Our curated list below includes some of the best heist films made in the 20th and 21st centuries, each of which has helped further define the genre with meticulous plans, clever twists, and memorable execution styles, becoming benchmarks in their own right. So, without further ado, here’s our ranked selection of some of the greatest heist movies of all time.
8
‘The Thomas Crown Affair’ (1968)
Starring Steve McQueen in one of his most famous and stylish films, The Thomas Crown Affair was directed by Norman Jewison and revolves around the titular protagonist, a millionaire businessman and sportsman who orchestrates a multi-million-dollar bank heist. When insurance investigator Vicki Anderson (Faye Dunaway) is hired to investigate, a high-stakes, seductive game ensues between Vicki and Thomas, blurring the lines between rivalry and romance. Paul Burke, Yaphet Kotto, Biff McGuire, and Jack Weston also star in notable roles.
Suave and sleek, The Thomas Crown Affair whisks its audience away into its world of high-fashion and sex appeal. While the film’s reviews at the time were mixed, it’s now regarded as a vintage classic caper that thrives on the chemistry between McQueen and Dunaway and their clever game of wits. Underscored by its Academy Award-winning music by Michel Legrand, The Thomas Crown Affair is one of the early examples of heist films that trade gritty realism for stylish escapism.
7
‘The Great Train Robbery’ (1978)
Directed by Michael Crichton and based on his 1975 novel of the same name, The Great Train Robbery (known as The First Great Train Robbery in the UK) dramatizes the real-life Great Gold Robbery of 1855, where three boxes of gold bullion and coins were stolen from a moving train in England. Aboard a train from London to Paris, criminal mastermind Edward Pierce plots an impossible and massive heist to steal a monthly shipment of gold with the help of his mistress Miriam, his chauffeur Barlow, and pickpocket/safe-cracker Robert. The film stars Sean Connery, Donald Sutherland, Lesley-Anne Down, and Alan Webb as key characters.
Dazzling and daring, The Great Train Robbery turns a historical crime story into a high-stakes puzzle that instantly engages and thrills the audience. Anchored by brilliant performances and a rich recreation of Victorian-era England, the film focuses entirely on the clever planning and execution of the robbery. Ranked among Michael Crichton’s greatest masterpieces, The Great Train Robbery is still memorable for its marvelous practical action, especially Sean Connery’s self-performed stunts that add real tension to the film’s climax.
6
‘The Italian Job’ (1969)
Directed by Peter Collinson and written by Troy Kennedy Martin, The Italian Job is a cult classic British comedy caper that stars Michael Caine in one of his most famous performances. The film follows him as Charlie Croker, a charming Cockney criminal who assembles a team of professional thieves to rob gold bullion transported in a security truck through the city of Turin, Italy. Noël Coward, Benny Hill, Raf Vallone, Tony Beckley, Rossano Brazzi, and Maggie Blye appear in other key roles.
The Italian Job is regarded as a cornerstone of British pop culture, featuring peak ’60s aesthetics and a famous catchphrase by Caine that became a symbolic cult feature. The film’s high-stakes plan, thrilling plot twists, and the iconic cliffhanger climax have since remained inspirational for several modern heist comedies. Massively popular at the time of its release, The Italian Job is a major landmark of British cinema, which has since been parodied, referenced, remade, and adapted, and it easily ranks among the top 100 British films of all time.
5
‘Inside Man’ (2006)
A critically acclaimed heist film by Spike Lee, Inside Man revolves around a high-stakes bank robbery on Wall Street led by criminal mastermind Dalton, which turns into a tense hostage situation. While the NYPD’s hostage negotiator, Detective Keith Frazier, matches wits with Dalton, a powerful fixer named Madeline gets involved with a hidden agenda, turning the crisis into a psychological game. Denzel Washington, Clive Owen, and Jodie Foster play the key characters, supported by Christopher Plummer, Willem Dafoe, and Chiwetel Ejiofor.
Inside Man is unlike traditional heist films, moving away from meticulous planning or a perfect getaway and becoming more of a puzzle for the detective and the audience to solve together. It focuses on how the criminal pulls off the heist, narrated through a battle of wits and hidden agendas of its protagonists. Slick, highly stylized, and intelligent, with sharp social commentary, Inside Man ranks among the best bank heist movies of all time, and it’s also the highest-grossing film Spike Lee ever made.
4
‘Ocean’s Eleven’ (2001)
Steven Soderbergh’s reimagining of the 1960 film featuring the Rat Pack, Ocean’s Eleven is undeniably the film that established him as the master of modern heist films. The movie stars George Clooney and Brad Pitt as Danny Ocean and Rusty Ryan, professional thieves and best friends, who assemble a group to carry out a major heist targeting three Las Vegas casinos owned by Terry Benedict (Andy García), a ruthless entrepreneur and the current lover of Danny’s ex-wife. The all-star cast also includes Matt Damon, Julia Roberts, Casey Affleck, Don Cheadle, Elliott Gould, Bernie Mac, and more.
Ocean’s Eleven not only launched the titular film series but also became a modern benchmark of the genre. Witty, slick, stylish, and fast-paced, the film boasts one of the most iconic robbery sequences of all time, which became definitive of 21st-century heist films. Pure entertainment in every frame, Ocean’s Eleven continues to earn acclaim decades later for its effortless style, sharp dialogue, and iconic ensemble cast, earning a place on the WGA’s 101 Greatest Screenplays of the 21st Century.
3
‘Ocean’s Twelve’ (2004)
Following the worldwide success of Ocean’s Eleven, Soderbergh returned with a sequel and the second entry in the titular film series, which picks up three years after the events of the previous film. In Ocean’s Twelve, after Terry Benedict tracks down Danny Ocean and his crew of thieves and demands his stolen money back, the gang is forced to plan a series of complex heists in Europe while dodging a Europol detective and a rival master thief. Ocean’s Twelve adds Catherine Zeta-Jones and Vincent Cassel to the ensemble as new characters, alongside the returning main cast of the previous film.
Ocean’s Twelve deconstructs what Ocean’s Eleven started, trading the crew’s confidence for overconfidence, which brings a completely new dimension to the genre. Instead of clever planning and perfect execution, the sequel finds the crew out of their element as they devise a long con instead of quick robberies. But Ocean’s Twelve is fun and glossy nevertheless, featuring a more experimental visual style and a very worthy rival in Cassel’s Toulour to Clooney’s Danny.
2
‘Dog Day Afternoon’ (1975)
Sidney Lumet’s iconic crime drama biopic Dog Day Afternoon reimagines the real-life 1972 robbery and hostage situation led by John Wojtowicz and Salvatore Naturile at a Chase Manhattan branch in Brooklyn, as chronicled in the Life magazine article “The Boys in the Bank” by P. F. Kluge and Thomas Moore. Portrayed by Al Pacino and John Cazale, the film follows first-time bank robbers, Sonny and Sal, whose plan for a quick bank heist falls apart, trapping them inside and leading to a hostage standoff as police and the media get involved. The movie also stars Chris Sarandon, Charles Durning, Carol Kane, Penelope Allen, and Lance Henriksen.
Dog Day Afternoon is not only one of the masterpieces of heist films but one of Lumet’s most iconic films that defined his crime filmography. Gritty, bold, and daring, the film is acclaimed for subverting genre expectations and focusing on a botched robbery rather than a successful crime. Headlined by Al Pacino’s critically acclaimed performance as Sonny Wojtowicz, Dog Day Afternoon is a brilliant heist film with high-stakes moral ambiguity and social realism.
1
‘Heat’ (1995)
Michael Mann’s classic ’90s action thriller starring Al Pacino and Robert De Niro in their first on-screen face-off, Heat follows LAPD detective Vincent Hanna, whose life’s mission is to catch Neil McCauley, a professional thief. When McCauley plans one big, last heist before he retires from his criminal career, he finds himself in a head-to-head battle of wits with Hanna, which also starts affecting their personal lives. The film’s stacked cast also features Val Kilmer, Jon Voight, Ashley Judd, Natalie Portman, and Ted Levine in supporting roles.
Featuring some of the most iconic action scenes of late 20th-century Hollywood, Heat is a defining film of its decade and of its genre, noted for its fight choreography and realistic tactical action. Unlike traditional heist films, Heat turns its cops-and-robbers story into a grand tragedy headlined by the legendary first on-screen pairing of Pacino and De Niro. A masterpiece of crime thriller and character drama, Heat remains a major influence on the genre, even three decades later.

LEGO PlayStation Set Revealed With 1,911 Pieces and Original PS1 Design
Nearly 30 years after the murder of Tupac Shakur, a Las Vegas jury has delivered a historic verdict in one of the most infamous unsolved cases in music history.
Duane “Keffe D” Davis has been found guilty of first degree murder with the use of a deadly weapon in connection with the 1996 drive by shooting that killed Shakur.
Davis, 63, is the first person ever convicted in connection with the rapper’s death.
The verdict came Monday following a weeks long trial and only a few hours of jury deliberations. Davis was accused of orchestrating the attack that ultimately resulted in Shakur’s death, despite prosecutors not alleging that Davis himself fired the fatal shots.
Prosecutors argued that Davis helped organize the shooting as retaliation following a confrontation at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas earlier that night.

Shakur and members of his entourage had been involved in a physical altercation with Orlando “Baby Lane” Anderson, Davis’ nephew, after attending a Mike Tyson boxing match.
Later that evening, Shakur was riding in a BMW driven by Death Row Records co-founder Marion “Suge” Knight when a white Cadillac pulled alongside their vehicle near the Las Vegas Strip.
Someone inside the Cadillac opened fire.

Shakur was struck multiple times, while Knight was also wounded. Shakur died from his injuries six days later on September 13, 1996. He was just 25 years old.
The identity of the person who actually fired the shots has remained one of the biggest questions surrounding the case. Prosecutors did not need to prove Davis was the shooter, arguing instead that his alleged role in organizing and facilitating the attack made him criminally responsible for the murder.
A major part of the prosecution’s case came from Davis himself.
Over the years, Davis publicly discussed his presence inside the Cadillac and details surrounding the shooting in interviews and his 2019 memoir, Compton Street Legend. Prosecutors used those statements to argue that Davis had repeatedly admitted his involvement in the events leading to Shakur’s death.
Davis’ defense argued that those accounts were exaggerated or fabricated and pointed to the lack of physical and forensic evidence connecting him to the shooting.
The jury ultimately sided with prosecutors.
Tupac Shakur
The conviction represents a stunning conclusion to a case that remained officially unsolved for decades and generated countless theories, documentaries, books and investigations.
Shakur remains one of the most influential artists in hip hop history. Despite his death at only 25, his music and cultural influence have continued for generations, with songs including California Love, Changes, Dear Mama and Hail Maryremaining among the most recognizable tracks of his career.
Davis now faces the possibility of life in prison.
For Tupac Shakur’s family, friends and millions of fans around the world, the verdict marks the first criminal conviction in a case that has remained unanswered for nearly three decades.

Inde Navarrette to Star and Executive Produce Apple’s ‘The Waffle House Index’
Inde Navarrette is continuing her rapid rise in Hollywood, signing on to both star in and executive produce Apple Original Films’ upcoming sci-fi thriller The Waffle House Index.
Apple has acquired the project, which will come from Apple Studios with Plan B Entertainment producing. Louis Paxtonis set to direct from a screenplay written by Andrew Nunnelly.
For Navarrette, the project represents another major step forward following the massive success of Obsession, while also giving the actress a significant role behind the camera as an executive producer.
A Waffle House, Killer Crocodiles and Aliens
Despite its unusual title, The Waffle House Index appears ready to take audiences on an even stranger ride than its name suggests.
The film centers on a Waffle House waitress whose already difficult night takes a dangerous turn when an armed stranger arrives during her shift.
From there, things escalate dramatically.
Inde Navarrette for Schön!
The story reportedly involves a massive flood, killer crocodiles, a nuclear explosion, a mysterious bunker beneath the Waffle House and even aliens, combining elements of disaster movies, survival thrillers and science fiction into one ambitious story.
The title itself is inspired by the real-world “Waffle House Index,” an informal method of measuring the severity of a natural disaster based on whether local Waffle House restaurants are able to remain operational.
The concept generally uses three levels. Green indicates a restaurant is operating normally, yellow signals limited service or supplies, while red means the restaurant has closed entirely and conditions in the surrounding area could be severe.
That real-world concept appears to serve as the jumping-off point for a movie that quickly ventures into much bigger sci-fi territory.
Navarrette’s Breakout Run Continues
The Waffle House Index arrives as Navarrette continues what has become a breakout period in her career.
She currently stars as Nikki Freeman in Obsession, the horror thriller that became a major theatrical success after earning strong attention following its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival.
Navarrette’s performance has also generated awards attention, with Focus Features reportedly preparing a Best Actress Oscar campaign for the actress.
Her career is expanding well beyond Obsession.
Navarrette has also landed the role of Rogue in Marvel’s upcoming X-Men film and is attached to the upcoming horror project Invertigo.
Before her recent run of major film roles, Navarrette appeared as Estela de la Cruz in 13 Reasons Why and played Sarah Cushing on Superman & Lois. Her other credits include Trap House and Wander Darkly.
Now, The Waffle House Index gives Navarrette the opportunity to take another major step in her career by serving as both the film’s leading star and an executive producer.
Apple has not yet announced a release date for The Waffle House Index.

If your wellness routine already has enough bottles competing for counter space, Oceanblue’s formula takes a two-birds-one-softgel approach. Each daily serving delivers 2,100 milligrams of long-chain omega-3s, including 1,350 milligrams of EPA, 600 milligrams of DHA and 150 milligrams of DPA, along with vitamin K2 and D3. The concentrated formula packs considerably more omega-3s than a standard 1,000-mg fish oil capsule, while supporting cardiovascular, cognitive, eye, joint and everyday immune health.
And because fish oil has a reputation for making its presence known long after you’ve swallowed it, the softgels use a “burpless” orange oil technology designed to avoid that dreaded fishy aftertaste. The omega-3s come from wild-caught fish like anchovies, sardines, herring and mackerel, and the oil goes through 27 rounds of molecular distillation. The result is a supplement that’s a little easier to work into your morning routine (even when it’s happening in total darkness).
The formula is non-GMO and gluten-free, with no artificial colors, flavors or preservatives. It’s available in several bottle sizes, with the brand estimating the daily cost at about a dollar, making it a relatively simple addition to the winter wellness lineup.

Feminist Icon and Journalist Was 92
Legendary feminist activist and journalist Gloria Steinem died on Wednesday, September 2. She was 92.
Steinem died “peacefully at her home in New York City, surrounded by some of the many who loved her,” said a post shared via both her and her foundation’s official Instagram accounts on Thursday, September 3.
The statement continued, “Gloria’s near-century on earth were years well-lived, and she continued working for equality until the very end.”
“Gloria’s greatest gift was her ability to listen to others, to make others feel seen and heard. Her words, actions, and example gave people permission to be their truest selves,” the statement went on. “Gloria lived true to her independent spirit, always with curiosity and a great sense of humor.”
The post said, “She spent her recent years doing the two things she loved most: being in community with others and writing. She has welcomed hundreds of guests into her living room for Talking Circles, a tradition she insisted will continue long after she is no longer with us. As Gloria wrote in her forthcoming book, An Unexpected Life, ‘I have now lived for more than fifty years in this brownstone, in rooms that have witnessed lives before mine, and will know others after I am gone.’”
“This book, along with her commitment to her home becoming a center for social justice movements, are among the many gifts Gloria has given the world with the hope they have ripple effects for generations to come,” the statement added. “Gloria often quoted the adage: ‘The flap of a butterfly’s wing can change the weather hundreds of miles away.’”
“Gloria loved the tradition of lighting signal fires on hills to light the way to the other side of the mountain,” the post said. “Lighting your own candle for Gloria makes you part of this global and celestial community circle.”
“In lieu of flowers, Gloria has asked that those wishing to honor her with a gift, may make a donation to Gloria’s Foundation,” it concluded.

Steinem was born in Toledo, Ohio, in 1934 but spent much of her years migrating between Michigan, Florida and California. After her parents divorced when she was 11, the activist spent much of her childhood caring for her mother, Ruth Steinem, who suffered from mental illness.
After graduating in 1956 from Smith College, where she studied government, Gloria established a career as a freelance writer. In the 1960s, she helped create New York magazine, covering important topics such as an abortion hearing given by the radical feminist group called the Redstockings.
Gloria’s activism career truly began when she formed the National Women’s Political Caucus in 1971 alongside figures such as Bella Abzug and Betty Friedan. That same year, she launched the feminist magazine Ms., which addressed important topics such as domestic violence. The journalist also helped co-found other women’s rights organizations such as Women’s Action Alliance (1971), the Women’s Media Center (2004), Voters for Choice (1977) and the Ms. Foundation for Women.
In 1983, the Ohio native released a collection of essays called Outrageous Acts and Everyday Rebellions which explored the philosophy of feminism and Gloria’s own personal experiences. After facing a breast cancer diagnosis in 1986, the feminist organizer entered remission that same year and went on to release 10 more women’s rights books, including Marilyn: Norma Jean (1986), Revolution from Within: A Book of Self-Esteem (1992) and Moving Beyond Words: Age, Rage, Sex, Power, Money, Muscles: Breaking Boundaries of Gender (1994).
In 2013, the author was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor, by former President Barack Obama.
“As a writer, a speaker, an activist, [Gloria Steinem] awakened a vast and often skeptical public to problems like domestic violence, the lack of affordable child care, unfair hiring practices,” Obama, 61, shared in his speech at the time the award was given. “And because of her work, across America and around the world, more women are afforded the respect and opportunities that they deserve.”
Despite insisting she would never marry, Gloria tied the knot with entrepreneur David Bale, Christian Bale’s father, in 2000. Three years later, David died from brain cancer at age 62.
In October 2022, Gloria self-published an essay for Vanity Fair talking about how she still remains hopeful despite dealing with a global pandemic and living in a post-Roe world. (The U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, which enshrined the constitutional right to abortion, in June 2022.)
“When I am asked how I ‘still’ keep going — and I’m asked that a lot at my age — I say it’s because action is infinitively interesting. You might be someone who knows the law and can help navigate legislatively,” the famous feminist wrote at the time. “You might be a health care worker who can provide care and support, regardless of what the law says, or you might be really good at social media and spreading information and friendship. It’s rare that any one of us can solve a big problem, but collectively, we can do anything.”

Dolly Parton’s Cousin Shares Rare Details Of Her Burial Ceremony
Dolly Parton was laid to rest on August 28, following her passing on the 25th. Now, several days later, the cousin of the late country music icon is opening up about her burial ceremony, revealing that it wasn’t a funeral in the traditional sense, and discussing the private health battle that led to her death at 80.
Parton’s first cousin, Richie Owens, appeared on “Today” on September 3 to discuss the icon’s legacy and share details about her burial. First, he pushed back against those who have called the occasion a funeral.
According to Owens, “The word keeps getting brought up, ‘funeral,’ and I don’t believe that was really the case in this situation. It was a burial, to be buried beside her husband. And she wanted it very small, and a few family members were there.”
He then said, “Other people that I’m sure would’ve liked to have been there were either out doing other things and stuff. It was very quiet, very quickly done, and not for any bad reasons whatsoever; it’s just that’s what she wanted. She wanted to keep it very, very private.”
From there, Owens also stated that Parton would have preferred resources that would have been used for a traditional funeral be put toward some other worthy cause.
He explained, “That’s exactly what she said … when that happens to her, when she passes, she would much rather see people take that $50 you should spend on flowers and give it to her Imagination Library.”
Dolly’s Cousin Also Shed Light On Her Private Health Struggles

Owens, who also serves as the Parton family historian, discussed her health leading up to her death in the “Today” interview. Notably, the news came after her death that the county music legend had endured a private battle with cancer.
He stated, “She, of course, posted herself that she had been going through health problems, but no one really knew what a lot of that was, including myself.”
From there, Owens shared why Parton wasn’t completely forthcoming about her health. According to him, “She always kept things private because she always wanted to keep everybody being positive around her and put that out there in the world. Just, ‘Don’t worry about me, I’m going to be fine.’ Just show the love.”
The Singer Gave A Health Update Before Her Passing

Parton spoke to PEOPLE in late August 2026 about her upcoming SongTeller Hotel in Nashville, which is set to open in September. However, during the conversation, she was also asked about her health, which had led her to cancel a number of appearances in the months before she passed.
The late singer and actress said, “I am dealing with some health issues that I just didn’t pay attention to when I was watching over Carl.” Notably, her husband, Carl Dean, passed away in March 2025.
She continued, “It’s not like I haven’t been through hard times with my health. But I think because we live in a 24/7 world with social media, everything gets magnified in ways it wasn’t years ago.”
Parton went on, “I used to joke that I was the Queen of the Tabloids, but now I guess I can say I’m the Queen of Social Media AI! Seriously, though, even though I’m still healin’, I’m still workin’.”
More Details Have Emerged About Dolly Parton’s Health

Following Parton’s passing, her representatives confirmed that the singer had been suffering from cancer. However, they did not disclose the type of cancer or the stage. They said in a statement, per the LA Times, “After bravely facing a brief battle with cancer, Dolly departed her Earthly life today at the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center surrounded by loved ones.”
Additonally, the world learned that the “Jolene” singer had been impacted by kidney and autoimmune issues before her death.
Dolly’s Niece Also Opened Up About Her Death
In additon to Owens speaking out about Parton following her passing, her niece, Jada Star, is also opening up. Regarding the singer now providing full details of her health, she echoed Owens’s sentiments.
She stated to ExtraTV, “She never wanted to worry anybody. So I think it was just a shock.” From there, she called dealing with the death of Parton “really difficult.”
However, Star continued, “All of these tributes have helped so much to help us all through it. I can’t remember a life without her. She would also tell us to start drying it up and start trying to get back to work and love each other real hard. She was just a trip.”

Brooks Nader Warns Fans as Sister Sarah Jane Joins DWTS Cast
Brooks Nader is in full protective big sister mode!
In a Wednesday, September 2, TikTok video, Brooks, 29, reacted to the news that her younger sister, Sarah Jane Nader, 24, will compete on Dancing With the Stars season 35 in a rare same-sex pairing with professional dancer Hailey Bills.
Brooks issued a tongue-in-cheek preemptive warning to DWTS’ vocal fan base as Sarah Jane prepares to battle for the Len Goodman Mirrorball Trophy. (Brooks competed on season 33 with ex-boyfriend Gleb Savchenko.)
“So, here’s the thing, guys. … You guys can say whatever you want about me. Literally. Actually, I quite enjoy it, if I’m being totally honest,” the Baywatch actress playfully said in her TikTok video.
Brooks continued, “If you ever say a f***ing word about my little sister, it’s not gonna be pretty, OK?”
“I know there’s freedom of speech. I’m all about it. But just don’t f*** with her, OK?” the model said. “Say it about me. All day. Tag me in it. But don’t say a f***ing word about my sweet baby sister.”
Love Thy Nader star Sarah Jane was announced for the new season of DWTS during a cast reveal on ABC’s Good Morning America earlier on Wednesday. Sarah Jane joins stars including Summer House’s Ciara Miller, The Traitors‘ Maura Higgins and actresses Jenna Dewan and Tatyana Ali.
During a post-cast reveal event on Wednesday, Sarah Jane exclusively told Us the advice Brooks shared with her as she follows in her older sister’s footsteps.
“She told me not to do anything she did, which is fine,” Sarah Jane said. (Brooks famously hooked up with her professional dance partner, Gleb, 42, during the 2024 season.)
Sarah Jane added, “She really just said to enjoy every moment and, like, soak it up and embrace the challenging [side] of it all. [She said] don’t be scared to embarrass yourself. And so I’m really just leaning in.”
While Sarah Jane will take to the dance floor, Brooks’ ex Gleb was not part of the troupe of professional dancers announced for the upcoming season during Wednesday’s reveal.

“Guys, I promise… I’m good 😂❤️,” the ballroom dancer wrote via Instagram, . “Nothing but love and gratitude for all the years in that ballroom. Excited for this next chapter — and wishing everyone an amazing season 🪩. No sad messages. We’re moving forward 😉.”
In a shirtless video, Gleb told his fans, “Guys, we can stop telling me you’re sorry. I’m good.”
Dancing With the Stars premieres on ABC and Disney+ with a two-night event beginning Tuesday, September 15, at 8 p.m. ET. New episodes will stream the next day on Hulu.

13 Versatile and Lightweight Tops For Transitional Weather

Transitioning from the end of summer into the beginning of fall brings confusing weather. It’s cold enough in the morning that you might feel like you need a jacket or cardigan, but warm enough in the afternoon to ditch every item of clothing you can. This in-between season can be tough to dress for, but I’ve learned that when you have comfortable, stylish basics on hand, the process gets a lot easier.
My trick for dressing for transitional weather? I always keep a versatile top on hand for easy layering. It’s a piece I can put on when I’m chilly, then remove when I’m not — and my outfit looks chic either way. The items below include some of my favorite oversized button-downs, fall jackets and lightweight sweaters, and you can start shopping them now so you’re (stylishly) prepared.
13 Go-To Layering Tops for Transitional Weather
1. My Favorite: This denim button-down is my go-to for September, October and even November. It’s just heavy enough to add some warmth, but the short sleeves make it work even on sunny afternoons.
2. Runner-up: This short-sleeve cardigan has an effortlessly chic look that dresses up anything you pair it with. I love the super-soft feel and slightly oversized fit that makes it so relaxed and comfy.
3. Super Soft: Made of a soft, slightly stretchy material, this pullover sweater is lightweight enough to act as a comfy layer. It’s ideal for styling over a cute top when it gets cold, and feels especially trendy with its slightly preppy look.
4. Classic Pick: You can’t go wrong with a lightweight denim button-down. The relaxed fit makes it work as a layer over a tank top or a dress, and it looks stylish left open or buttoned up.
5. Oversized Look: Chic but still so easy to throw on, this oversized button-down is more versatile than you think. Layer it over a sundress, pair it with shorts or wear it with jeans — it looks good with just about everything.
6. Feminine Details: This striped peplum top is undeniably cute, with a ruffled hem and slightly cropped fit. The elbow-length sleeves make it work when there’s a chill in the air, but it’s also very breathable.
7. Office Friendly: I love this polished short-sleeve cardigan because it’s so easy to dress up or down. It looks elegant with trousers (and is even office-friendly!), but also works when left open over a white tee with jeans.
8. On-Trend: Poncho-style tops are enjoying a moment right now, and this lightweight cape top plays into the trend while still feeling like a classic. You can throw this on over a tank — the sheer material makes it feel so elevated.
9. Elevated Athleisure: A little bit sporty and definitely chic, this wrap-style cardigan is both comfortable and stylish. Layer it on over a workout set or a tank and jeans when you need a little extra clothing.
10. Cropped and Cute: I wouldn’t be able to get through the end of summer or the fall without this go-to cardigan. Its slightly cropped look and slim fit make it work with just about anything.
11. Rich Mom Chic: This wrap top is sophisticated and makes you feel so put-together, whether you’re going to grab lunch or heading out for a date night. There are so many ways you can wear this one.
12. Boho Vibe: I love this sheer, lacy top because of the relaxed fit and how fun it is to wear. For a more risqué look, wear it over just a bra, or pair it with a tank for more coverage.
13. Relaxed Feel: This open-stitch sweater might be a little too breathable to wear on a cold winter day, but it’s perfect for transitional weather. The soft cotton feel is just a bonus.
