New IFAB rule proves Mbappe’s penalty should have been retaken during Betis vs Real Madrid
The controversy surrounding Kylian Mbappe’s missed penalty against Real Betis has taken another turn, with the new IFAB rules for the 2026/27 season indicating that the spot-kick should have been retaken.
Real Madrid were trailing 1-0 at La Cartuja when Alvaro Valles saved Mbappe’s penalty in the closing stages.
Marc Bartra then cleared the rebound, immediately prompting protests from the Madrid players because the Betis defender appeared to have entered the area before the kick was taken.
The initial argument against a retake centred on Bartra being airborne. He had not yet placed his feet on the ground inside the penalty area when Mbappe struck the ball.
That detail, though, does not settle the matter under the rules now in force.
The new rule changes the Bartra argument
IFAB’s 2026/27 Laws of the Game clarify how an airborne player’s position is determined.

If a player is in the air, their position is established by the projected position of their feet as though they were touching the ground.
That is crucial in this incident, as Bartra did not need to have his feet physically touching the turf inside the box for his position to count as an encroachment.
If his projected foot position was inside the penalty area when Mbappe struck the ball, he was considered to have entered the area before the kick.
There is another important element: impact.
Bartra’s involvement after the save matters
Under the updated Law 14, a defending player’s encroachment only leads to a retake when it has an impact.
The law specifically provides for a penalty to be retaken when defending encroachment has an impact after a saved kick.

Bartra’s role makes that particularly relevant. Valles saved the penalty, but Bartra then cleared the rebound before Mbappe could get to it.
Journalist Eduardo Iturralde made the same distinction when discussing the incident on El Larguero.
“I think the CTA [Technical Committee of Referees] is going to say that it didn’t have to be repeated, but as the rule is written, it has to be repeated.”

The controversy has a different answer now
The important point is that Bartra being airborne does not automatically mean he was legally outside the area.
The 2026/27 clarification specifically addresses airborne positioning, and his subsequent intervention provides the potential impact required under Law 14.
Therefore, provided the footage confirms that Bartra’s projected foot position was inside the penalty area when Mbappe took the kick, the new rules support a retake.

Aryna Sabalenka halts US Open match over ‘strong’ smell of marijuana
World No 1 Aryna Sabalenka called a halt to her third-round match at the US Open after complaining she could smell marijuana.
The two-time defending champion was 2-0 up and serving in the first set against Kamilla Rakhimova on Louis Armstrong Stadium when she stopped abruptly and spoke to her team before approaching the umpire’s chair.
“Someone is smoking weed,” she told umpire Eva Asderaki-Moore. “Would you mind to… because it’s so strong.”
Asderaki-Moore spoke to an official on her radio and turned to someone else behind her, making a smoking gesture with her fingers, before play continued.
The smell of weed around Flushing Meadows has been an issue this week but has broadly been confined to the outside courts, close to nearby Corona Park. Smoking of any kind is prohibited on the site itself.
Afterwards, Sabalenka said: “I was, like, Guys, you can do whatever, you can smoke whatever, you can relax as much as you can, but please, do not do it around the tennis courts. It’s a bit tricky to handle that smell while you’re trying to compete at your best.
“[The smell was] that strong, yeah. Also, because it was a bit windy. I don’t know if it was, like, coming from the crowd or was from the outside because the wind blows it into the stadium. I don’t know. I just hope they’re going to be a bit more aware of that stuff.”
Despite the disruption Sabalenka was able to keep composed, winning 6-3 6-4 and withstanding the pressure as Rakhimova rallied in the second set, which took 54 minutes – a minute longer than Sabalenka’s entire second-round match.
“Second she played incredible tennis,” the Belarusian said. “She really pushed me so hard in the second set and I love when they bring their best tennis because they really push me to improve.”
She joked that she wore an elaborate, eye-catching jewellery set to “distract” opponents but in reality could rely on her usual easy power and aggression to hold off the world No 92.
Sabalenka, who is aiming to become the first woman to win three US Open titles in a row since Serena Williams from 2012-2014, will next play American Taylor Townsend.
Later on Friday third seed and former finalist Jessica Pegula survived a huge scare against 2021 runner-up Leylah Fernandez, dropping an error-strewn first set 6-1 before regrouping and taking advantage of a dip in the Canadian’s level to win 1-6 6-4 6-3, roared on by a hugely supportive home crowd.
“I’m not sure [how I turned it around], it was really tough today,” Pegula said afterwards. “I never feel comfortable playing her even when I’ve won. I knew I was going to have to dig deep, really glad I could find something there to turn it around.”
Pegula will play Romania’s Sorana Cirstea in the fourth round after the 16th seed beat 19th seed Jasmine Paolini in straight sets.

India Star’s Selection For Afghanistan Series Blasted By 1983 World Cup Winner: ‘Doctor’s Certificate’
Former India cricketer Kris Srikkanth questioned Washington Sundar’s match fitness and selection in the upcoming three-match Afghanistan T20 series, arguing that the all-rounder should have played competitive cricket before being picked for India. Srikkanth also expressed concerns over Sundar’s recurring injuries and felt that he has lost his rhythm in white-ball cricket despite making a successful transition to Test cricket. Sundar, along with pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah, returns to the squad, subject to fitness clearance. The squad also includes all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy and pacer Harshit Rana. The series will get underway on September 13, with the second T20I scheduled for September 15 and the third on September 17. All three matches will be played in New Delhi at the Arun Jaitley Cricket Stadium.
“He is good in Tests but didn’t play in Sri Lanka. How is he fit now, in two weeks? He has not proved his match fitness, so what is the use? You must play some matches at some level to show your fitness before being picked for India. You can’t just play with a doctor’s certificate. Washington Sundar seems to be injured after every two or three series,” Srikkanth said on his YouTube channel.
“He was smashed in Ireland and England. He started his cricket from the T20 format. He moved brilliantly to Test cricket, but he has lost his rhythm in white-ball cricket,” he added.
In July, Sundar suffered a hamstring injury during the third ODI against England and has since been at the Centre of Excellence (COE) for his recovery.
India’s squad: Shreyas Iyer, Abhishek Sharma, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Sanju Samson, Ishan Kishan, Tilak Varma, Shivam Dube, Nitish Kumar Reddy*, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar*, Varun Chakaravarthy, Ravi Bishnoi, Jasprit Bumrah*, Arshdeep Singh, Harshit Rana*

Andy Ruiz Jr: Ex-world champion loses to Poland’s Damian Knyba
Former world champion Andy Ruiz Jr has vowed to carry on after losing his comeback fight to Poland’s Damian Knyba in New Jersey.
The 36-year-old heavyweight shocked the boxing world seven years ago by beating Britain’s Anthony Joshua to take his world titles.
Ruiz Jr has since been beset by injuries and was taking part in just his fourth fight since losing the rematch to Joshua in December 2019.
He looked a shadow of his former self at the Prudential Center in Newark, saved by the bell after scrambling back to his feet following a knockdown in the seventh, he eventually lost by a unanimous points decision.
Judges scored the fight 117-110, 114-113 and 114-113 in favour of the Pole, who took his record to 18 wins and one defeat, but Ruiz Jr was quick to demand a rematch.
“I don’t know, I think it was just him holding,” said Ruiz Jr, who recently signed up with British promoter Eddie Hearn.
“Every time I tried to come in, he’d hold me really tight, and I just couldn’t let my combinations go.
“He played a good game plan, but I’d love to run it back and do things a lot different.”
Joshua’s former conqueror argued that he was simply rusty after taking his first fight since drawing with American Jarrell Miller in August 2024.
“It was just a long layoff, and it was a great opponent,” he argued.
“I didn’t want to take an easy fight, so that’s why I took Damian. He’s a big guy. But we’ve got to take risks. I’ve still got it in me, man. I’ve just got to stay active and I want to fight again.”

Evan Ferguson Edges Closer to Brighton Return After Ankle Injury
Republic of Ireland striker Evan Ferguson is moving closer to a Brighton return, but manager Fabian Hurzeler says there is still no firm date for his comeback.
Evan Ferguson is making progress in his recovery from the ankle injury that brought an early end to his loan spell at Roma.
Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler provided an encouraging update on Friday, September 4, confirming that Ferguson remains in rehabilitation but is drawing nearer to a playing return.
The 21-year-old has not been given a precise comeback date. Brighton appear determined to avoid rushing a player whose recent seasons have repeatedly been interrupted by fitness problems.
Brighton prioritising complete recovery
Ferguson underwent surgery after suffering the ankle injury that ended his 2025-26 campaign. His loan with Roma concluded after 22 appearances and five goals for the Serie A club.
Hurzeler said the striker was “getting closer” but could not provide a clear timescale. The Brighton manager stressed that physical rehabilitation is only one part of the process.
Regaining complete confidence in the injured ankle will be equally important. For a centre-forward, explosive movements, changes of direction and contact with defenders can expose any lingering uncertainty following a long absence.
Hurzeler believes Ferguson must feel entirely secure in his body before returning to Premier League football. That approach suggests Brighton will continue to judge his recovery by its quality rather than by setting an artificial deadline.
Ferguson Recovery Update
Status: Continuing rehabilitation
Return date: Not yet confirmed
Roma record: Five goals in 22 appearances
European squad: Omitted from Brighton’s Conference League league-phase list
A major player for club and country
Ferguson was among five senior Brighton players left out of the club’s squad for the league phase of the UEFA Conference League. The list can be changed before the knockout rounds, leaving open the possibility of a European role if Brighton progress and Ferguson proves his fitness.
His return would also be significant for the Republic of Ireland. Ferguson has the physical presence and finishing ability to offer Ireland a focal point in attack, but persistent injuries have prevented him from building sustained momentum.
Hurzeler remains convinced of the striker’s quality, pointing to the level Ferguson reached during his breakthrough period at Brighton. The next challenge is to restore the confidence, sharpness and physical durability that accompanied that rise.
For now, the absence of a deadline should not be interpreted as a setback. Ferguson is progressing, and Brighton’s cautious handling of his rehabilitation is intended to give him the best chance of returning without another interruption.

‘CSK captaincy must be changed’: Sanju Samson backed to take over from Ruturaj Gaikwad | Cricket News
Chennai Super Kings have built their reputation on stability, but the franchise could be forced to make some major calls ahead of the 2027 Indian Premier League season. The five-time champions have endured a difficult phase, missing out on the playoffs for three successive seasons. Their 2026 campaign was further complicated by skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad’s struggles with the bat, while the arrival of Sanju Samson from Rajasthan Royals sparked debate over whether CSK could consider a leadership change.Although CSK have traditionally avoided knee-jerk decisions, former India batter Sadagoppan Ramesh has now backed Samson to take over the captaincy if the franchise decides to move on from Gaikwad.Samson brings considerable leadership experience from his time at Rajasthan Royals. The wicketkeeper-batter, who was named Player of the Tournament at the 2026 T20 World Cup, moved to CSK ahead of the 2026 IPL and finished the season as the franchise’s highest run-scorer.Ramesh believes those credentials make Samson a serious option for CSK.“CSK are seemingly considering many options for the captaincy and even wondering whether a change is needed. Sanju Samson should be considered as captain because he’s such a fantastic team player. The CSK captaincy must be changed, and if it is, CSK must seriously consider Sanju Samson,” said Ramesh on his Instagram handle. He also pointed to Samson’s IPL captaincy record, while stressing that changing the skipper alone would not solve all of CSK’s problems.“Samson has also captained 66 matches in the IPL and won 33. So he has a 50% success rate. Under him, RR performed well, reaching the final and making another playoff appearance. Of course, CSK need several other things to change, and just making Sanju the captain won’t win them the trophy. But if at all they change captains, Sanju must be strongly considered,” he added.
Gaikwad’s difficult 2026 season
Gaikwad’s position has come under scrutiny following a disappointing campaign in 2026.The right-hander scored 337 runs at an average of 28.08 and also recorded the lowest strike rate among all batters during the powerplay. His struggles added to the questions surrounding CSK’s leadership ahead of the next season.Ramesh is not the first former CSK player to suggest that Gaikwad could benefit from stepping away from the captaincy.Former CSK and India batter Subramaniam Badrinath had previously argued that Gaikwad should be relieved of leadership duties and allowed to concentrate entirely on his batting.“So once you remove him from captaincy, he’ll perform well as a batter. It won’t be a harsh decision if he is stripped of captaincy. It’s more beneficial for the player and the franchise. It’ll only do Gaikwad a world of good. This is not new to him alone. Even greats like Sachin Tendulkar have been affected by captaincy. If you are someone who is intense and thinks too much, it’s hard to detach from captaincy even while batting,” he had said on his YouTube channel.CSK themselves have several decisions to make before the 2027 season. The franchise are currently looking for a new head coach after Stephen Fleming stepped down earlier this year. There is also uncertainty surrounding MS Dhoni’s future, with it still unclear whether the former India captain will continue playing for CSK in the 2027 IPL.

Everyone Active launches its ‘Much More’ campaign
It showcases the many benefits people can get from its leisure facilities
The narrative shifts focus beyond basic exercise to emphasise life skills, mental wellbeing, social connections, and the You+ wellness membership.
The strategy spans TV, digital hubs, PR and customer communications
Everyone Active has launched new campaign – backed by TV advertising for the first time – which will show the national reach of the company while messaging the many ways its leisure facilities contribute to people’s lives.
The Much More campaign aims to showcase how the leisure centres provide places for people to learn new skills, build confidence, make friends, improve their wellbeing, and create lasting memories.
The first-ever national tv advertising campaign represents a significant investment in the brand’s marketing activity. It was developed in partnership with creative agency, Wraith, and focuses on the everyday experiences taking place across Everyone Active facilities and the impact they have. For example, swimming lessons building confidence and friendships (Much More Than a Swimming Lesson).
The Much More Than a Gym Membership’ ad showcases the broader role that Everyone Active plays in supporting people’s physical and mental wellbeing, including the benefits of its You+ wellness membership.
Alison Ford, commercial director at Everyone Active, said: “We have made a significant investment in this campaign because we want to demonstrate the breadth of what modern leisure provision can offer and the positive emotions that can come from being active in our facilities. Whether it is a sense of achievement, greater confidence, happiness or connection, we’re proud to help people achieve much more in everyday life.
“At its heart, Much More is about changing the way people think about leisure and ensuring the Everyone Active brand resonates with our customers beyond their time in our centres. We want to be a brand that is part of people’s everyday lives, reflecting the positive impact that being active can have on how people feel, live and connect with others.”
The campaign will roll out across Everyone Active’s customer communications, digital channels, online campaign hub, social media, PR, TV advertising and in-centre activity. Social promotion will also take place across the organisation’s leisure facilities, with local teams bringing the Much More proposition to life through stories and experiences from their own communities.
Everyone Active managing director, Duncan Jefford, will be among the line-up of speakers at the all keynote HCM Summit taking place in London on 22 September. Tickets are available here.
