US envoys set to conduct talks in Ukraine after meeting with Putin

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — U.S. envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner are set to arrive in Kyiv on Sunday in their first visit to the Ukrainian capital as part of a renewed push for peace in Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

The visit follows a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Saturday, in an attempt to revive peace talks during escalating aerial attacks by both sides.

Washington’s push to end the fighting has lost momentum, with the United States focused for the past six months on the Iran war. The last known visit to Moscow by Witkoff and Kushner, U.S. President Donald Trump’s son-in-law, was in January when they also held talks with Putin at the Kremlin.

Saturday’s meeting in Moscow lasted more than three hours behind closed doors and ended without announcements of any breakthroughs. Putin’s foreign policy adviser, Yuri Ushakov, described them afterward as constructive, frank, and useful but didn’t discuss specific outcomes.

While Moscow offered its “comprehensive assessment” of the battlefield situation in Ukraine, Ushakov said, the talks were not purely focused on the war in Ukraine.

“Economic issues and potentially large, mutually beneficial joint projects for Russia and America were discussed in considerable detail,” he said.

The air war between Russia and Ukraine has intensified as troops have struggled to make progress along the 1,250-kilometer (775-mile) front line. Russia has recently been using fast-flying, jet-powered drones, and the recurring wail of air-raid sirens has become part of daily life in Kyiv.

Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had agreed to pause strikes on each other’s capitals while the talks take place. Still, the two traded fire overnight into Sunday, officials said.

Russian attacks across multiple Ukrainian regions killed one person and injured at least 10 others overnight into Sunday, Ukraine’s State Emergency Service said.

In Zaporizhzhia, drone strikes killed a 74-year-old man and wounded three people, while a drone damaged an apartment building, injuring seven people, in the Khmelnytskyi region.

Ukraine’s Air Force said Sunday 82 drones out of the 108 launched by Russia overnight, along with six missiles, were intercepted.

In Russia, a man was killed and a woman seriously wounded when a Ukrainian drone struck a vehicle, local authorities in the Belgorod border region said.

The Russian Defense Ministry said Sunday that its air defenses overnight shot down 258 Ukrainian drones over 14 Russian regions, occupied Crimea and the waters of the Black and Azov seas.

Middleham Bridge closed after HGV strike hours before Tour of Britain

The Grade II-listed Middleham Bridge, in Wensleydale, was struck by an HGV yesterday evening (Thursday, September 3), causing significant damage to its decorative masonry arches.

North Yorkshire Council initially hoped temporary work could make the structure safe and allow the road to reopen.

However, following a further assessment today engineers have concluded the damaged arch is too unstable for temporary repairs.

Large sections of stonework have been lost, while the impact has also displaced part of the arch, creating what the council described as a “significant structural risk”.

As a result, the bridge will remain closed to vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists while a repair plan is developed.

North Yorkshire Council leader Councillor Carl Les said: “The damaged arch has not only lost sections of stonework, but has also become displaced creating a significant structural risk.

“Because of this, the listed bridge will remain closed to vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists while a plan for repairs is developed.

“Concrete barriers and fencing have been installed to secure the site and prevent access to the bridge to ensure the safety of all road users and pedestrians.”

Cllr Les thanked residents and motorists for their patience and said further updates would be issued as repair plans progressed.

Richard Osman accidentally reveals Celebrity Traitors season 2 launch date
A podcast recording went awry when one of Richard Osman’s guests accidentally let slip a sensitive titbit (Picture: ITV/Shutterstock)

Richard Osman seems to have accidentally confirmed the launch date of the eagerly awaited Celebrity Traitors’ second series.

Pointless creator and House of Games host Richard had been joined by former celebrity Faithful Joe Marler on his The Rest is Entertainment podcast, which he hosts with journalist Marina Hyde.

Talk inevitably turned to the subject of Celebrity Traitors, when he was pressed for what advice he might give the new batch of contestants.

In doing so, the former English rugby union player seemed to let slip what date viewers can expect Celebrity Traitors’ second series to air on the BBC.

A flustered Richard appeared to confirm, adding that the date is ‘absolutely embargoed.’

‘The cat’s out of the bag, isn’t it?’ he added.

‘By the way, to point out, it’s absolutely embargoed that it starts on September 23,’ Richard replied.

‘Let’s talk about what we call the events of September 23 this year.

‘The cat’s out of the bag isn’t it? Not to repeat it,’ he finished, after repeating it again.

So far, the BBC has not officially shared the date for the second series of Celebrity Traitors, although a new teaser trailer has been released.

In it, host Claudia Winkleman addresses the show’s latest line-up from within a Church – Faithful and Traitors both solemnly gathered within the pews.

This year’s celebrity Traitors line-up is as star-studded as the one which preceded it, with some A-listers in Richard E. Grant, Michael Sheen and Miranda Hart.

In a season dominated by comedians, Miranda will be joined by James Acaster, Joe Lycett, Romesh Ranganathan Rob Beckett and Joanne McNally.

Other names include former Corrie star (and Romesh’s Weakest Link voice-over artist) Julie Hesmondhalgh, singer James Blunt, actor Bella Ramsey and EastEnders star Ross Kemp.

Claudia will once again front the show from behind TV’s most impressive fringe, in a return to Ardross Castle in the Scottish Highlands.

It’ll be hoping to replicate the runaway success of last year’s show, which saw comedian Alan Carr storm to victory – in spite of his apparent inability to keep a straight face the whole time.

As for Joe, he made it all the way to the final, only to be betrayed by actor (and fellow Faithful!) Nick Mohammed at the last minute.

Ahead of the second series airing, Joe has been liberal with his advice.

When not accidentally letting cats out of bags, his top tip may be a surprising one – don’t fill up on the breakfast buffet.

Speaking to Metro in May, he told us: ‘Don’t eat too much breakfast in your own lodgings before going down to another breakfast.

‘I put on eight kilos doing it. So I said, just be careful what you’re eating in there.’

He also reflected on his own mistakes as a Faithful, admitting that he may have been a ‘bit full on’ in his final moments.

‘I creeped [Nick] out,’ he admitted. ‘When I turned around to him, and said, “Mate, I know you’re 100% faithful. I am too”.

‘It wasn’t until we watched it all back that he told me that was the moment. He was like, “Oh, am I being played here?” If I had my time again, I’d probably be less intense.’

Metro has contacted the BBC and Richard Osman’s representatives for comment on this story.

Celebrity Traitors series 2 will premiere on BBC One and iPlayer later this year.

My ‘dirty secret’ illness nearly ruined my life

Published

My ‘dirty secret’ illness nearly ruined my life
For years, I had felt stamped with the stigma of bipolar (Picture: Leah Charles-King)

Teetering my finger above the phone screen, I pressed ‘post’ on Instagram – finally ridding myself of the ‘dirty secret’ I’d been concealing for seven years.

I had been diagnosed with bipolar in 2012 – but it took me until April 2019 to ‘come out’ about my condition to the world.

As I posted about my situation, I felt an overwhelming sense of relief.

For years, I had felt stamped with the stigma of bipolar. Now, at last, I was able to live freely as my true authentic self.

Bipolar essentially manifests as extreme changes in your mood – from ‘low moods’ in the form of depression, to ‘high moods’ in the form of mania or hypomania.

For me, it manifests as a whole range of symptoms: severe depression, mania, impulsivity, racing thoughts, hyperactivity, overspending, disrupted sleep and suicidal thoughts.

I can’t pinpoint the moment when bipolar started to rear its head for me, but my symptoms began in my teens. My depressive episodes were dismissed as teenage angst; I didn’t know what I was describing, and all I was asked by my GP was to rank my emotions on rigid mood questionnaires.

My concerns around my mood, my thoughts and the sharp shifts of both were brushed aside. It was clear then that my mental health wasn’t taken seriously – treatment or support were not on the table.

Time and time again I’d be told that ‘people like me’ – a Black woman – are usually ‘strong’ (Picture: Shaun Gray)

This pattern continued for the entirety of my 20s.

Use AI to go deeper into the stories you care about – powered by Metro and trusted publications.

The first major depressive episode I remember was after my girl band, Kleshay, lost its record deal in 2000.

Later, after being made redundant when Disney Channel UK closed, I experienced another major period of depression. I became withdrawn, stopped seeing friends, rarely left the house, wasn’t eating properly and struggled to function.

I went to the GP roughly every month, explaining my low mood, but time and time again I’d be dismissed as having a ‘bad day’, or told that ‘people like me’ – a Black woman – are usually ‘strong’.

Not only was I fighting my mind, I was battling the medical misogynoir – the systemic intersection of anti-Black racism and misogyny within healthcare – blocking access to the help I so desperately needed.

Not only was I fighting my mind, I was battling medical misogynoir (Picture: Leah Charles-King)

It didn’t matter what GP I saw, the reaction was more or less the same; even when I repeatedly said that I was contemplating ending my life.

The sudden loss of energy, the constant tears, the growing dark thoughts – it was all consuming.

But, again, I was told to be ‘strong’ and that I was ‘too self-aware’ for anything to be seriously wrong.

Eventually, I was misdiagnosed with depression in 2010 and prescribed SSRIs, a type of antidepressant.

But, while neither I nor my GP realised at the time, this medication sent me into mania.

It was frightening and deeply confusing (Picture: Shaun Gray)

I was in a manic episode for a year. I didn’t feel the need to sleep or eat; I’d never felt so confident or spontaneous. Ideas constantly streaming. I felt untouchable. Invincible.

That was, until I wasn’t. The euphoric facade of mania eventually wore off and the harsh reality of this part of the illness hit.

I was unemployed for two years as a result of my manic episode, and in debt – but impulsive spending and excessive generosity are common symptoms of hypomania, and I couldn’t stop spending money I didn’t have.

I’d get delivery after delivery of parcels I didn’t remember ordering; I’d buy rounds of drinks for people I didn’t know, even though my bank balance was in six figures of debt.

At one point, I briefly became homeless and severed ties with friends and family due to my erratic behaviour.

During mania, I was highly impulsive. Although I often felt euphoric and invincible, suicidal thoughts could appear suddenly and intensely. It was frightening and deeply confusing.

During the height of mania, my friend Sheeba talked me down from doing something life-threatening. It was one of my darkest moments.

In 2012, I seriously thought about ending it all.

In a last ditch attempt to save myself, I wrote a suicide note and gave it to the GP receptionist. I hoped putting my feelings in writing would make them take action.

Sure enough, once the GP had read my note, an ambulance came. I thought this would be the end of my suffering – but upon arrival at the hospital, I was left alone in a meeting room for hours, scared and confused.

Eventually, I was finally diagnosed with bipolar and generalised anxiety disorder (Picture: Shaun Gray)

I was sent home without any diagnosis, treatment or support. Despite being severely suicidal, I was on a waiting list to see a psychiatrist for three long, painful months; and my symptoms worsened in this tortuous state of limbo.

Eventually, I was finally assessed and diagnosed with bipolar and generalised anxiety disorder.

Initially, after fighting an exhausting decade-long battle with both my mind and various GPs who hadn’t taken my concerns seriously, I just felt relieved. The fight certainly wasn’t over; but at least now, I could equip myself for it. My medication was altered and I was gradually weaned off my antidepressants.

However, that initial relief was abruptly replaced with the haunting title of this diagnosis, and the heavy shame it carries. Bipolar is readily stigmatised – it was impossible not to feel threatened by the very real possibility of prejudice – and I spent the next seven years concealing my diagnosis to the world and even some of my closest friends.

For years, I believed people would judge me before they got to know me. I worried I’d lose work, credibility and opportunities.

Eventually, though, I began to rebuild my life.

It’s now been 14 years since I got my diagnosis, and I’ve come a long way since then (Picture: Leah Charles-King)

Medication helped stabilise me, but therapy was transformational. It helped me understand myself, process what had happened and move forward.

Gradually, as I became more stable, I grew tired of living in the shadows of the condition. I knew I had to look within and fully accept who I am.

In short, I took my power back.

I learned everything I could about bipolar. I prioritised stability, accepted support, built routines and eventually turned my experience into advocacy through my book and work.

At the point of pressing ‘post’ on Instagram, I wasn’t thinking about becoming a mental health ambassador – I simply wanted to stop living a double life and feeling like a fraud.

It’s now been 14 years since I got my diagnosis, and I’ve come a long way since then.

I worried that I would no longer have a career in TV if people knew about my bipolar, but I landed my presenting job on Channel 4’s A Place in the Sun in 2021 – which I still have today.

I’ve managed to rekindle my relationships with friends and family that are so integral to the support system that keeps me going.

Leah’s book, Thriving with bipolar: A Personal and Practical Guide to Living Well, is available on Amazon now.

In a full circle kind of way, I’m now an ambassador for Bipolar UK.

And, most importantly, I’m the most mentally well I’ve been in my life.

The stigma attached to mental health difficulties can be just as debilitating as the symptoms themselves. It’s what made me feel I had to keep a ‘dirty secret’ to begin with. But my initial step to being able to thrive with bipolar was – and is – acceptance. That shift of mindset allowed me to realise that bipolar shouldn’t be secret; nor is it ‘dirty’.

There’s more to me than my condition – one that I can now manage really well – and it took me a long time to realise that. Bipolar is something I live with; it isn’t who I am.

Yes, I have bipolar; but I am not Bipolar Disorder. I deliberately remove the capital ‘B’ to give the word ‘bipolar’ less power, as I am the one with the control.

And a disorder? I am certainly not that.

It’s possible to thrive with bipolar. I’m living – not merely existing – proof.

Kelly Osbourne addresses extreme weight loss after death of dad Ozzy: ‘I wasn’t very well’

Kelly Osbourne has addressed concerns surrounding her weight loss, stating she had “no idea” how thin she’d gotten after the death of her father Ozzy.

Osbourne, 41, furiously hit out at speculation over her skinny appearance in an Instagram video shared in December 2025, but has now acknowledged she “wasn’t very well” and shouldn’t have attended the Grammys in January, where Black Sabbath frontman Ozzy was honoured.

At the time, she said: “To the people who keep thinking they’re being funny and mean by writing comments like ‘Are you ill,’ or ‘Get off Ozempic, you don’t look right,’ my dad just died, and I’m doing the best that I can, and the only thing I have to live for right now is my family,” she said.

However, grief-stricken Osbourne has now revealed she also didn’t listen to concerns raised by friends and family, but “couldn’t see what other people saw because I was in so much pain” over Ozzy’s death. “All I saw was a broken person,” she told The Mail on Sunday.

It was her gaunt appearance in a photograph taken at a dress fitting for the Grammy Awards, which took place in January, that made her realise there was a problem.

“I looked like the f****** Crypt Keeper,” Osbourne said, referring to the skeletal ghoul from TV series Tales from the Crypt. “I said, ‘This is scary – I didn’t know I looked like this.’ My spine – you could see every single bone.”

Former The View host Osbourne ended up wearing a wig that covered part of her face, so people “couldn’t see how skinny” her cheekbones really were, but she said she doesn’t think she should have gone as she “wasn’t very well”.

She said she had lived with “anticipatory grief” for 10 years due to her dad’s worsening health and that she plans to do a documentary series on grief and mental health as “there’s a lot that people don’t know”.

In 2024, she opened up about her decision to take the weight-loss drug Ozempic, telling E!: “I think it’s amazing. There are a million ways to lose weight, why not do it through something that isn’t as boring as working out?”

Addressing critics, she said: “People hate on it because they want to do it. And the people who hate on it the most are the people who are secretly doing it or pissed off that they can’t afford it.

Black Sabbath frontman Ozzy, whose funeral involved a procession through his hometown of Birmingham, died aged 76 on 22 July – shortly after playing his final concert at Villa Park.

He suffered a string of health issues over the years, mostly related to neck injuries sustained in a 2003 quad-biking accident, which were later exacerbated by a fall in 2019. He was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease that same year.

Cardiff 10k live updates as thousands of runners make their way through city

Published

on

Wales Online

Runners from 30 Cardiff hospitality businesses are taking part in today’s event as part of the Lab 22 Hospitality vs 10K Challenge.

They are raising money for local children’s charity Dreams & Wishes.

Now in its third year, the initiative was started by Lab 22 owner Tani Hasa after he bought 30 race places in 2024 and offered them to people working in hospitality who might never previously have considered entering a 10K.

Those first spaces disappeared almost immediately. Tani bought another 30 and, ultimately, 62 people took part in the inaugural challenge. A year later, the group had grown to 100.

In 2026, 130 people are signed up, with runners coming from across Cardiff’s restaurants, cocktail bars, pubs, hotels and leisure venues.

People who had never run before the first event are now regular runners. Friendships have formed between people working in different venues and different parts of the industry. Training, races and wellbeing have become talking points across bars and restaurants in a sector where socialising has traditionally been more likely to revolve around going for a drink after a shift.

Lab 22 owner Tani said: “Hospitality can become a cycle of working, drinking and sleeping if you’re not careful. This has given people something completely different to connect over, and we’ve seen friendships and communities develop between people who might never otherwise have met.”

Airport closed, hundreds of flights grounded after volcano erupts

Published

Belfast Live

Tens of thousands of passengers have been left stranded

Hundreds of flights have been suspended after an airport had to be closed because of the ash cloud caused by a volcanic eruption. Tens of thousands of passengers have been left stranded. 209 flights were suspended after ash from Anak Krakatau blew into the airspace near Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta International Airport on Sunday.

Soekarno-Hatta is the main airport in Indonesia. The volcano started erupting on Friday night and there were two more eruptions on Sunday. More than 22,000 people have been hit by the suspension of flights, which has hity major international routes.

There is no tsunami warning linked to the eruption in the Sunda Strait between Java and Sumatra. The health minister has urged residents to stay indoors and wear face masks.

Local newspaper Kompas said schools cancelled activities on Saturday after students reported eye irritations. Fishing vessels have also been grounded amid health concerns.

Resident Aldi Candra Prayogi told Kompas it felt like “small grains of sand had gotten into my eyes” and he is having to clear the path outside his home every five minutes.

Anak Krakatau emerged from the sea in 1927 inside the caldera formed by the catastrophic, climate-altering eruption of the original Krakatoa volcano in 1883.

The volcano grew at an average rate of 5 meters per year for decades and collapsed in 2018, triggering a tsunami which killed more than 400 people, and injured thousands more. Anak Krakatau remains one of the most active volcanic systems in Southeast Asia. It routinely experiences eruptive phases, building its cone back up through fresh ash deposits and lava flows while under continuous monitoring by Indonesian authorities.

Roughly 300,000 to 400,000 British nationals visit Indonesia every year. Jakarta is the single most important transport hub in Indonesia and a major transit node in Southeast Asia, acting as the primary gateway for air, sea, and land movement across the archipelago.

Soekarno–Hatta International Airport processes well over 50 million passengers annually, ranking as one of the busiest airports in Southeast Asia.
