Five French rescue boats and two helicopters helped 140 migrant mega-dinghy make 70-mile trip to Britain from Normandy – amid fears boats will now start landing across south coast

Fears are mounting that packed mega-dinghies of migrants could begin landing all along Britain’s south coast after one completed its longest-ever Channel crossing to Portsmouth, aided by five French vessels and two helicopters.

A boat carrying 140 asylum seekers set off from the Baie de Seine in Normandy yesterday, up to 300 miles by road from Calais, as people smugglers launched a new  route to the UK.

Their arrival in Britain sparked chaos as protesters waded into the Solent to confront them, before around 500 people then blocked roads near Eastney Beach in an attempt to stop buses taking the migrants away for processing.

Their flimsy 46ft dinghy had completed a 70-mile journey across the treacherous and busy Channel to Portsmouth on Sunday, more than double the usual 34-mile crossing to Dover.

Rather than intervene, the French deployed five rescue boats and two helicopters to shadow the vessel for ten hours until it reached UK waters, claiming it was too dangerous to intercept because of the number of people on board.

British lifeboats, backed by a helicopter and fixed-wing aircraft, then took over for the final four hours of the crossing before bringing the migrants ashore on Sunday afternoon.

Anti-migrant demonstrators were waiting in Portsmouth and dozens even waded into the sea in an attempt to turn them back.

The group of protesters sprinted across Eastney Beach and into the water yesterday afternoon, chanting ‘stop the boats’ and ‘enough is enough’ as migrants arrived aboard a British Coastguard vessel.

It was a flashpoint that then led to 500 people later blocking the road to prevent coachloads of new arrivals leaving the Hampshire coast in the early hours of Monday morning.

After being dispersed by riot police, some got into cars and followed the buses on their journey to Kent today.

It came as the Home Office confirmed 625 arrivals on eight small boats yesterday.

The migrants had set off from Jobourg, around an hour west of the sands of Pouppeville, better known as Utah Beach, where American forces landed on D-Day.

Rather than turn the boat around in French waters, the authorities’ ‘safety operation’ involved handing out lifejackets to everyone on board, including 20 women and eight ‘very young children’.

The inflatable eventually reached Eastney intact on Sunday afternoon, with no injuries reported after 14 hours at sea.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Police crime commissioner Donna Jones said it would be a ‘significant issue’ for the country if people smugglers began shifting their destinations away from Dover.

Details of the extraordinary voyage emerged on Monday, when a senior search and rescue operative in France described how the mega-dinghy left an isolated Normandy beach near Jobourg, Normandy, on Sunday morning.

‘It was in the very early hours of Sunday morning then it pushed off from the beach, with everyone on board,’ he said.

‘Jobourg is not patrolled by police, because nobody would expect a boat to leave from such an isolated, rocky spot.

‘Within an hour of so the boat was in serious difficulty, and passengers on board made Mayday calls on their mobile phones.’

The outboard motor on the 46ft (14m) boat had failed, meaning she was drifting dangerously around 14 miles off the coast.

It was then that five French vessels were sent – the ‘Amiral de Tourville’ lifeboat, the ‘President Jules Pinteaux’ and ‘Philippe Keigger’ fast patrol boats, the ‘Jacques Armengaud’ rescue boat, and the high-seas tug ‘Abeille Liberté’ [Liberty Bee].

With them was a French Navy H-160 helicopter, and a Dragon 50 civil security chopper.

The Abeille Liberté got closest to the stricken boat, and found ‘all on board packed closely together, and clearly in some distress,’ said the search and rescue source.

‘We asked them who wanted to be rescued, and the answer was no-one,’ said the source. ‘There were twenty women and eight children among them, and they clearly caused the most concern.

‘Only a few migrants were wearing life jackets, so we handed out jackets to all of them. It seemed incomprehensible that they were risking their lives without life jackets.’

The source continued: ‘A second out-board motor was made to work, so the boat could continue on its voyage to Britain.’

By 1.30pm on Sunday, the craft was 38 miles from France, and heading towards British water, where it was finally joined by an RNLI boat from Yarmouth, on the Isle of Wight, and a British aircraft.

‘The British boats finally saw the inflatable safely to England,’ said the source, who added that he and his colleagues were not legally entitled to stop the mega-dinghy at sea.

The French authorities confirmed it was the first time that an immigrant boat has attempted to reach the UK from such a distance.

A spokesman for the Maritime Prefecture for the English Channel and the North Sea said the escort operation had been essential ‘for safety reasons.’

He said: ‘The situation had to be monitored, in preparation for rescues if necessary. Those on board were determined to reach the UK.

‘Given the structural fragility of these consistently overloaded vessels, the decision was made not to force migrants onto state rescue boats, so as to avoid endangering their lives in the event of a shipwreck.’

Clips posted online later showed asylum seekers being ushered off lifeboats to shore in the UK, where they were met by several buses which took them to a processing centre in Kent

It is the second major UK anti-migrant protest in two days after the Port of Dover was shut down on Saturday.

More than 500 protesters gathered on the Hampshire coastline and dozens entered the sea four miles from Britain’s Royal Navy headquarters to demand the asylum seekers be returned to France.

Following calls to action on social media, protesters flocked to the coast and spent at least five hours on the beach and in the water.

They then attempted to stop the migrants being taken to Kent in a demonstration that went on until 3am on Monday, when police threatened arrests after a dispersal order was imposed.

Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp said: ‘The last 24 hours have seen multiple violations of the UK border by mega dinghies full of illegal immigrants which the French authorities have allowed to depart.

‘Andy Burnham and Shabana Mahmood have been boasting about French action, but hundreds of illegal immigrants arriving in just a few hours shows this is not working

‘Their weak approach is leaving our border wide open, with almost 20,000 illegal immigrants crossing so far this year. Only rough seas have prevented even more crossings.’

In protest footage shared on social media, a riot officer appeared to be pushed from his motorbike as demonstrators, many wearing caps and hoods, shouted: ‘Shame on you.’

Further clips showed officers carrying shields ordering the crowd to ‘get back’ before pushing some protesters away from a nearby police van.

The protest is thought to have been spearheaded by Daniel Thomas, the Tommy Robinson associate from Hampshire whose Patriot Platform group organised a mass demonstration in Dover on Saturday.

Livestreaming the protest Thomas – also known as Danny Tommo – yesterday said: ‘It was only [on Saturday in Dover] when we warned them that we will not accept this any more, and that it is no longer an option to tell us the boat numbers are down.

‘This isn’t about the numbers being down. This is about understanding that this has to come to an end now.’

Reform UK home affairs spokesman Zia Yusuf visited Eastney today.

Danny Tommo was also there and interrupted one of his interviews from the scene.

Mr Yusuf told Thomas to ensure there was no violence from his group towards the police.

He said: ‘I just want to make that really clear, just so that we’re really clear about this, right? There is never any excuse for violence against police officers who are doing their job. They are taking orders, and that is what it is.’

Mr Thomas said there was no violence in Dover and when questioned about his group’s masks and attire being intimidating said: ‘The reason people felt potentially intimidated was because of the faces covered. I’ve made that point very clear.

‘The only reason they’ve done that is because no one wants to be labelled far right.’

Mr Thomas, who founded Patriot Platform in July, dashed around the large crowd of reporters and said: ‘You have to understand, Yusuf, that what we’re trying to do and the reason the Patriot Platform has been created is not because of violence. We’re not looking to intimidate anyone.

‘Let me start by first explaining to you why the men are wearing masks. As you know, and as Nigel knows, the left in this country target us massively. We have working-class men who are bricklayers, who are roofers, who are carpenters, who build the houses that you live in. They build the roads that you drive on. They do all of that stuff. The reason they’re covering their faces is because we know they’re going to be targeted.’

He added: ‘What Nigel Farage has done is not good. When you call people disgusting, yeah, you have to understand the reasons of why this is happening.’

Unlike in Dover, the hundreds of protesters this time chose not to wear masks or balaclavas, although many were dressed in black.

The Baie de Seine to Portsmouth crossing is thought to have been one of the longest ever people-smuggling trips.

HM Coastguard sent two lifeboats, a coastguard helicopter, a fixed-wing aircraft  and rescue teams to ensure the asylum seekers reached the British shore safely

In some clips riot officers appear to be sprayed with water from super-soakers as dozens watching on record them on their phones.

Thomas, who livestreamed the event on YouTube, was heard urging his supporters to ‘get in your cars and get down here’ as he stood waist-deep in the sea.

Separate footage meanwhile appeared to show a woman delivering supplies to protesters via canoe.

The authorities in France have said that it is unusual for a migrant boat to depart from the Baie de Seine, nearly 200 miles from the usual launches.

A Maritime and Coastguard Agency spokesman said: ‘In response to a report on September 6 of a small boat heading towards the Hampshire coast, HM Coastguard sent lifeboats, an HM Coastguard helicopter, an HM Coastguard aeroplane and HM Coastguard Rescue Teams.

‘Border Force, Border Security Command, Hampshire Police and South Central Ambulance Service were also sent.’

Councillor George Madgwick, leader of Reform UK in Hampshire, wrote in a post on X that ‘over 100 migrant men’ had arrived in Portsmouth.

Reform UK leader Nigel Farage meanwhile posted: ‘A boat launched from Baie de Seine, 170 miles from Calais, arrived on the beaches of Hampshire for the very first time. This is a joke. Only Reform will send the boats back.’

Commissioner Donna Jones said officers from other forces were brought in to help amid fears this ‘is just the start’ of protests.

She said: ‘Last night we had mutual aid, public order police officers sent from police forces across the country including the Metropolitan Police Service.

‘We also had a number of our own police officers, obviously, from Hampshire and the Isle of Wight Constabulary trying to take back control of the roads, forming a line and holding a few hundred protesters back.

‘This is just the start, if this continues, these numbers will grow from the protesters. They were making their point that they don’t want Portsmouth to become a destination’.

She said it will be a ‘significant issue’ for the Government if people traffickers shift their destinations across England’s south coast.

The crossing to Portsmouth came in the same week Prime Minister Andy Burnham and French President Emmanuel Macron met to discuss how to ‘scale up’ efforts to reduce small boat crossings.

Only last month, a small boat carrying record numbers of migrants – believed to be more than 230 – successfully crossed the English Channel.

And earlier this week hundreds of anti-migrant protesters donning balaclavas brought the Port of Dover to a standstill. Demonstrators were chanting ‘stop the boats’ while blocking many of the town’s roads.

Some of those in attendance claimed links to Thomas’s anti-migrant Patriot Platform.

Kent Police were thought to have been ‘unaware’ that the protest was taking place, leaving them ‘thin on the ground’ as hundreds marched the streets of the town.

Mike Tapp, the Labour MP for Dover and Deal and former Home Office minister, said: ‘I will be looking urgently on Monday to ask questions around why we didn’t know about this, because we do tend to know when protests are coming to the area, and they tend to be peaceful, and laws aren’t broken, and obviously the police have the resources to manage that.

‘But in this instance, it would appear that the police didn’t know about it, and the resources were pretty thin on the ground, to be quite honest from what I saw. We know that laws were broken because they were blocking the roads and wearing face coverings.’

In response, Kent Police told the Daily Mail it was a ‘spontaneous event and was policed accordingly’.

Police made no arrests and escorted the protesters to Dover Priory train station at around midday.

At least 100 people were seen boarding a train to Ramsgate, with some since spotted in nearby Sandwich where ‘police are in attendance’.

Hard-Right Patriot Platform was founded earlier this year by Daniel Thomas, a convicted kidnapper and associate of Tommy Robinson.

Sharing clips of the protest in Dover to his social media, Thomas wrote: ‘It’s time. Protect Our Country! And more importantly, our women and children! This is our warning.’

Government minister Emma Reynolds today called the 500 protesters ‘thuggish and intimidating’.

The Treasury Chief Secretary said: ‘I absolutely support people’s right to peaceful protest. But this crosses a line and I just want to take the opportunity to thank the police and other emergency services who have brought this under control.’

A Government spokesman said: ‘We condemn the intimidating and thuggish behaviour we are seeing tonight.

‘The right to peaceful protest is fundamental to our democracy, but it must never cross a line into disorder.

‘We thank the emergency services who are working to safely manage this situation.’

Hampshire Constabulary said: ‘This evening, we have been working alongside and assisting our partners from Border Force, Maritime & Coastguard Agency and Portsmouth City Council at Eastney Marina following the arrival of a boat crossing the channel.

‘We have officers in the area to ensure the prevention of any disorder. We ask that people please avoid the area. A dispersal order is in place until tomorrow evening. Anyone who refuses to comply with the direction to leave the area is liable for arrest.

‘We can also confirm that Border Force has advised us that Individuals will be transported outside of Hampshire for processing in the normal way after they have been safely disembarked.’

Bank transfer casino: Top casinos with bank transfer payment methods

Published

on

Best Online Casinos with Bank Transfers 2026

There are many different ways to bank on casinos these days, but many players still prefer the traditional method of bank transfers.

Bank transfer casinos are simply casinos that allow deposits and withdrawals directly from or to a player’s bank account.

Alongside debit cards, this is one of the most popular casino payment methods, and it is known for security and reliability while also providing flexibility for players wishing to deposit large amounts of money.

To that end, we’ve provided a guide to these casinos, offering information on the process of making deposits and some additional insight into the top UK casinos that accept bank transfers.

Below, we’ve provided some detail on the leading casinos with bank transfer facilities, including key information on the brands and their welcome offers.

1. LeoVegas

LeoVegas is one of the most highly-rated casinos in the business and their bank transfer process is very straightforward.

Users can deposit a minimum of £10 using this method, while it suits high-rollers too with a maximum deposit of £10,000.

These deposits are instant, making it perfect for players to deposit and start wagering.

Withdrawals also start as low as £10, with a maximum withdrawal of £35,000. Withdrawal process times can take up to 3-5 days, although this is standard across the industry.

LeoVegas doesn’t have a huge array of payment options, but the best alternative to bank transfers is probably PayPal.

2. BetMGM

BetMGM is a formidable name in the gambling industry and they permit customers to use bank transfers.

They allow both deposits and withdrawals via bank transfer, offering users secure and quick access to their funds.

BetMGM bank transfer deposits also start as low as £10 and permit users to deposit up to £10,000 at one time.

Deposits are instant using BetMGM. Withdrawals may take up to 3-5 days to process, but it allows users to withdraw as little as £10 and as much as £35,000, making it one of the best bank transfer casinos in the business.

We would like to see BetMGM introduce more payment options as there’s not a huge variety outside of bank transfers, with Google Pay the pick of the alternative options.

3. Bet365 Casino

Bet365 is considered one of the highest payout casinos and they offer various methods for bank transfers, including instant and wire transfers.

Wire transfers can take more time to process for deposits (between two and 10 days) while they also require a minimum £100 deposit, which ranges all the way up to £100,000 for a maximum deposit.

Withdrawals are straightforward, taking between 1 to 4 hours to process with a minimum withdrawal of £5 and max of £100,000.

Deposits made using Trustly or Pay By Bank App only require a £5 deposit, but the max deposit are limited to £25,000 and £5,000, respectively.

4. Coral

Coral have a proud reputation in the UK gambling industry and offer bank transfers for both deposits and withdrawals.

Customers can deposit as little as £5 with bank transfers, although they are capped at a maximum of £2,000, which may not suit some high-rollers.

Withdrawals can also be as low as £5 on Coral Casino, but again are capped at the maximum level at £2,000.

Deposits are instant using Instant Bank Transfers, while withdrawals can take between two and four days to process.

Given some of the limitations of using bank transfers on Coral, users may wish to Visa or Mastercard, which Coral have identified as their most popular options on site.

5. MrQ:

MrQ is one of the most popular casinos in the UK and is one of the top casinos that accept bank transfer deposits.

It offers a wide range of deposit and withdrawal options, but still ensures that it offers bank transfers as a payment method.

The minimum deposit and withdrawal options are £10 each, while there are no limits on maximum amounts for either option.

Deposits made are instant, while withdrawals can take as little as 40 minutes, but may take up to three days depending on your bank.

MrQ is a casino that accepts Apple Pay, but other than that their alternative payment options are pretty standard.

  • Deposits: Players provide their bank details to the casino or use their online banking platform to transfer funds.
  • Withdrawals: Casinos transfer winnings directly to the player’s bank account. Using one of our recommended fast withdrawal casinos can help speed up the process.

The process may involve longer waiting times compared to other methods – it can take up to 10 days to process depending on the casino.

Security: Bank transfers use high levels of encryption and banking protocols to ensure secure transactions for deposits and withdrawals.

No Third-Party Accounts: Players don’t need additional accounts, apps, or wallets to complete transactions.

High Rollers: Suitable for large deposits or withdrawals, as it often has higher limits than other payment methods.

Fees: There are very rarely fees attached to payments via bank transfers with casinos online.

Acceptance: Works with a wide variety of casinos, particularly leading brands.

Longer Processing Times: Deposits and withdrawals may take several days to complete. Instant bank transfers remove this from the equation. Look out for this option, but withdrawals can still take a few days even on new casino sites with the latest technology.

Less Convenient: Requires customers to enter bank details, whereas other options such as Apple Pay and PayPal are quicker and can place deposits with FaceID or a touch of a button.

Privacy: Bank transfers are tied directly to your personal banking information.

How to deposit via Bank Transfer

  1. Log in to your casino account and go to the deposit section. Select Bank Transfer as the payment method.
  2. Enter your required bank details and deposit amount (bear in mind you may need to deposit a certain amount to qualify for a welcome bonus).
  3. Confirm the transaction via your bank. Some banks may require you do this via text, call or through their banking app.
  4. Top casinos have instant deposits via bank transfers, although this is not commonplace. Check to ensure that your chosen casino permits instant deposits.
  5. Waiting times can be up to four days depending on the casino and your bank.

How to withdraw via bank transfer

  1. Go to the withdrawal section of the casino.
  2. Select Bank Transfer as the withdrawal method.
  3. Provide your bank account details and confirm the amount to withdraw.
  4. The withdrawal process may take longer, typically 2–5 business days, depending on the casino and bank.

Bank transfers are ideal for players who value reliability and security over speed, but many modern forms of banking are catching up with the traditional method:

  • PayPal: PayPal casinos are popular online due to the speed, security and privacy offered. However, there are issues regarding the max deposits and withdrawals that might not be suited for high rollers. PayPal is not always eligible for welcome offers.
  • Neteller/Skrill: Much like PayPal, e-wallets like Neteller and Skrill offer security and speed for online transactions. While PayPal is not always eligible for welcome offers, these e-wallets are often excluded by casinos for promotions. They too have limits on max deposits and withdrawals.
  • Apple Pay: Apple Pay casinos offer convenience for customers with deposits made with a touch of a button, but these payments are limited to customers with Apple devices and are not universally accepted by all casinos.
  • Google Pay: Google Pay falls under the same category as Apple Pay in that it allow speed and convenience, especially for mobile users.
  • Paysafecard: Paysafecard casinos provide customers with greater security as well as speed, but is not available for withdrawals.
  • Pay by mobile: Pay by phone casinos are very popular as they allow players to make small deposits (up to £30) via their phone bill or mobile credit. However, withdrawals are not possible using pay by mobile.
  • Debit card: Debit card remains one of the most popular and reliable forms of depositing and withdrawing funds online. Providing efficiency and security for players as well as offering high thresholds of max deposits and withdrawals. Casinos that accept Revolut also fall under the debit card bracket.

Remember that gambling sites are only a form of entertainment, not a way to make money. Never wager more than you can afford to lose, and take steps to remain in control of your budget.

If necessary, you can make use of responsible gambling tools offered by casinos, such as deposit limits, loss limits, self-exclusion and time-outs.

These tools will also be available on regulated poker sites and bingo sites and any other gambling platform.

Be careful not to get too carried away by free spins offers as they typically require a deposit to secure the bonus.

Should you wish to seek help for gambling-related issues, there are several charities, organisations and healthcare providers who offer support and information:

I went to Venice for the Oasis documentary world premiere and this is what it’s really like behind the scenes

Published

on

Manchester Evening News

In search of Liam and Noel Gallagher, What’s On Editor Jenna Campbell headed to the Venice Film Festival

There’s a brief moment on Saturday morning where I feel like I’m in some sort of dream. I’m on the public water bus – the Vaporetto – between the centre of Venice and Lido, an 11km-long barrier island that sits just off sure from the historic centre.

It’s early, about 6:30am, and the streets of Venice are still airing. Commuters are on their way to work, tourists are consulting upside-down paper maps, and I’m crossing the water to attend the 83rd Annual Venice Film Festival.

I’ve somehow swapped the streets of Manchester City Centre, for the sun-soaked Lido boardwalk, and I’m heading down to grab my accreditation for the prestigious film festival and see one of the year’s most anticipated films.

Click here for the latest on Manchester’s food & drink scene, gigs and more in our CityLife newsletter

“Don’t Look Back In Anger” charts Liam and Noel Gallagher’s epic reunion tour, Oasis Live ‘25, one of the most anticipated rock ‘n’ roll comebacks in many decades. The film, created by Steven Knight of Peaky Blinders’ fame, is an unapologetically uplifting account of the biggest musical event of 2025, capturing the experience and emotions of the band and their fans across the world.

Spanning two hours of rehearsal, backstage, and onstage footage, as well as the first joint interviews with Noel and Liam in over 20 years, the film explores the profound emotional impact of this global cultural moment and what the band’s music means to audiences and generations worldwide.

It’s a backstage pass and the viewer’s seat at the table, detailing the highs and lows of the reconciliation, and the tour itself, with both Liam and Noel extremely candid in their reflections. I was lucky enough to attend the first official screening of the film and attend the world premier of the film in Venice on Saturday night.

The Venice Film Festival is one of the most prestigious film festivals in the world, widely considered second only to Cannes. Its often agreed that festivals like Venice serve as the main launchpad for important Oscar contenders.

Some of Hollywood’s biggest stars have attended this year including George and Amal Clooney, Orlando Bloom, Michael Fassbender, Robert Pattinson, Amanda Seyfried, Kiefer Sutherland, Laura Dern, Kate and Rooney Mara, and many more.

Two see two lads born and raised in Burnage on the red carpet was also a pinch me kind of moment. But on Saturday night, both Liam and Noel Gallagher, along with the film’s creator Steven Knight, and directors, Dylan Southern and Will Lovelace walked the red carpet and attended the screening.

Here, I take a look back at a whirlwind 48 hours in Venice, from catching water taxis to and from Lido, and trying to catch a glimpse of Liam and Noel to what it’s like in and around one of the world’s most prestigious festivals.

While many will associate Venice with landmarks like the Piazza San Marco, St Mark’s Basilica, and Doge’s Palace, or know it for its famed gondolas traversing narrow canals, as well as glassmaking, opera and fresh seafood and cicchetti, the focus during the film festival is all on Lido.

The barrier island, which is about a 20-minuite ferry or vaporetto ride from the main sights, was once a military outpost in the 12th century, but transformed into a seaside resort, and was a favourite of European aristocrats by the end of the 19th century.

It also served as the real-life inspiration and primary setting for Thomas Mann’s novella Death in Venice and Luchino Visconti’s 1971 film adaptation. Since 2014 alone, the festival has hosted four best picture winners – Birdman, Spotlight, The Shape of Water and Nomadland.

Once I arrived onto Lido, I got myself down to the main festival area, which spans a number of important buildings including the Palazzo del Cinema where the festival director’s office sits and the red carpet can be found; the Sala Darsena, where we watched the first Oasis documentary screening with press and industry; and Palazzo del Casino, which features press areas, the photo call room for Hollywood stars and the room where film conferences are held for the movies being show.

Just down the road is the only five-star hotel on the island, Hotel Excelsior, which dates back to 1908. While there are other luxury hotels on different island that offer more privacy, this is the spot that you’ll see fans, TV crews and photographers camped outside as they desperately try and catch a glimpse of some of the world’s biggest movie stars and celebrities.

It’s where I found myself coming back to several times over the two days after hearing that it was here that George and Amal Clooney were spotted getting off a private water taxi at the hotel’s docking area. Many stars arrive to the festival, including press conferences and premieres here.

On the Friday, I knew Liam and Noel may have arrived, and later saw they were photographed at the airport, but I kept a close eye on the docking area from the balcony area above and found myself transfixed by the comings and goings. Celebrities and influencers arrived – admittedly there was a fair few that I did not recognise, as a flicker of lightbulbs went off and the celeb’s own teams grabbed social media footage of them.

That afternoon I acquainted myself with the surroundings, where to find the press materials, where to drop my work bag and laptop before the viewing tomorrow, and generally soaked up the atmosphere at the festival. I also saw people putting up parasols in front of the red carpet so they could have the best spot in the house for when stars walked down the carpet for that night’s premiere.

Saturday, up bright and early and whizzing across the Venetian Lagoon and walking across to Sala Darsena for the early Oasis film screening which was for press and industry. Afterwards, and after traipsing around in the 30C heat looking for somewhere to work, I headed up to the press room and was able to get a seat and get my head down to write up my review ahead of the official world premiere at 9:30pm that night.

Unlike festivals like Cannes, many screenings at the Venice Film Festival are open to the general public without requiring industry accreditation. This meant that when I stepped out from the dark press room into the blistering sun late afternoon the area around the Palazzo del Cinema was packed. The area in front of the red carpet when fans can queue was heaving, though I did manage to speak to two Italians who had struck up a friendship when they visited Manchester last year to see Oasis at Heaton Park.

While the earlier screening was smart/casual the premiere requires you dust off your gladrags. In theory this sounds great, but when every street around the festival is packed, and all the bars and cafes are fully booked, finding somewhere to get changed is slightly trickier.

I managed to talk myself into a beach bar and escaped to a rather sandy toilet to swap dresses and pop on some heels, while a colleague was forced to get changed behind an industrial sized bin. This is the less glamorous side of covering major events and festivals.

We then dashed inside the building where the Oasis film was being shown. The red carpet extends into here which means, with a ticket (as we did), you can grab a decent spot to view the film stars. After waiting for almost an hour, and with the room becoming busier and hotter, Liam and Noel paraded down the carpet, stopping to sign posters, football shirts and memorabilia.

Finally, after searching for two days, I had found Liam and Noel Gallagher, and felt like a little bit of Manchester was in the room. We then headed up to the cinema, where Liam and Noel took to their seats as members of the press and some public cheered them on – Oasis mania at Venice was reaching it’s peak.

The film, and its Manchester stars, received a eight-minute standing ovation as the formerly estranged brothers held hands and raised them triumphantly into the air. Noel even looked to be wiping tears away as Liam gleefully hyped up the crowd who were cheering them on.

Fans were clamouring to get an autograph, and Liam even broke with the festival’s traditions by obliging them. There was even a Manchester City flag, which one fan flew over the balcony of the prestigious movie theatre. During the film there was lots of clapping and cheering, and the audience even sang along to some of the songs, while many had tears in their eyes reliving one of the most memorable summers in decades.

Wandering back to the docking area for boats back to the centre of Venice, slightly delirious from a full-on day working the Venice Film Festival, the sense of occasion wasn’t lost on me. Above all though, the chance to see a major film like this, and to witness Manchester represented loud and proud on one of the world’s most prestigious red carpets was really a dream come true.

Darcy Lever residents left in shock after death of teenager in crash

The crash, believed to have involved one vehicle hit a tree, was reported on Radcliffe Road at around 10.53pm.

Police said at the time that four people were injured, some of them with life-threatening injuries, and confirmed on Sunday afternoon that the incident is now fatal following the death of one of the people in the car, believed to be aged 19.

Police said that a Toyota Yaris travelling east along the road where it appeared to have lost control and crashed into a tree at the side of the road.

Jayden Truman, of Radcliffe Road, said: “I was asleep when it all happened, there was police and three or four ambulances, a couple of people from the fire service.

“I was asleep, but my mate had seen it about midnight.”

Another witness, working nearby, said: “All we have seen is police cars in the area, it was at about 11 we noticed.”

A witness said: “We saw the incident; there were a lot of emergency services at about 11.30am, there was just a lot of chaos, but it is a shame.”

Although the cause of the incident is subject to an investigation and is not known at this stage, the incident has raised fresh concerns about the route.

Residents voiced concerns about the road, including the speed of some cars they’ve witnessed travelling on the road.

Mr Truman added: “About two or three weeks ago another crash happened.

“I would say people speed up and down here all the time; I would say get traffic lights installed.”

One resident added: “On this road, they fly up and down there”

As reported, police are still appealing for witnesses following the crash.

A Greater Manchester Police spokesperson previously said: “Sadly, this is now confirmed a fatal collision so if anyone has any information, please come forward.

“This includes anyone who witnessed the incident, or has CCTV, dashcam, doorbell or mobile phone footage from the area.”

Retired Brit, 68, ends up homeless in Thailand after falling victim to cyber predator posing as glamorous US woman in romance scam

Published

Former UN flight operator Simon Charles Hill, 68, from Luton, retired to Bangkok 11 years ago, where he lived comfortably on his state pension

A retired British pensioner has revealed how he was left destitute in Thailand after falling victim to a romance scam.

Former UN flight operator Simon Charles Hill, 68, from Luton, retired to Bangkok 11 years ago, where he lived comfortably on his state pension.

But after splitting from his Thai wife, the Brit expat lived alone – before being targeted online by ruthless cyber predators posing as a besotted American woman called Emily Smith.

The fictitious woman, seen in pictures posing in sports wear, claimed to be waiting for $3million (£2million) in inheritance.

But she needed to pay fees to claim the cash, she claimed, which Mr Hill willingly stumped up.

Having apparently believed the story, Mr Hill started transferring his pension – around £500 a month – as soon as it reached his bank account. He then drained his own savings before running out of cash.

Months after the scam began, Mr Hill was kicked out of his apartment after he found himself unable to pay his rent.

He was unable to buy food and was eventually found sleeping in the lobby by concerned locals.

It is suspected that the scammers used artificial intelligence to create the image of the woman Mr Hill thought he was speaking to, or an identity was used falsely.

A local charity, the Bangkok Community Help Foundation (BCHF), helped Mr Hill – who had illegally overstayed his visa, and was therefore in the country illegally – avoid spending weeks in prison and paid for his flight back to the UK, where he is now recovering.

Recounting how the con began, Mr Hill said: ‘I took to talking with a lady on social media. There was a girl called Emily Smith.

‘She reached out to me on Facebook. And her texts were very warm and inviting, and she sounded like a three-dimensional kind of girl, although I didn’t know whether she existed or not.’

He continued: ‘She introduced me to her lawyer, who was disposing of her property and assets, a total of three million US dollars to be paid directly into my bank account.

‘The sale of the house and the transfer of the funds to my account incurred a fee. And it was assured to me that I would receive the bank transfer once I had paid these fees.

‘I was able to sustain myself for a while, but it wasn’t going to last. And that’s when it dawned on me that I was actually homeless.’

Mr Hill told the Daily Mail he made seven or eight transfers, over a period of just under five months.

The desperate pensioner eventually spent several nights sleeping in the lobby of a hotel in the Surawong area of Bangkok as his money ran out and he had nowhere else to go.

The BCHF said Mr Hill was ‘very frail and weak’ when he was found on July 9.

The Brit said he had been advised by the embassy that he could be sent to immigration detention.

But Friso Poldervaart, 34, a Dutch national and co-founder of BCHF, believed there was another option for the frail and elderly retiree.

Friso and the team decided to take Mr Hill to the organisation’s ‘Centre of Dreams’ shelter instead, where he was given time and space to recover.

Looking back on the day he first met Friso, Mr Hill said he believed he had reached rock bottom until he was rescued by the ‘knight in shining armour’.

The grateful expat said: ‘At the time, I thought there was nothing. I thought that I would be out on the street. And then you appeared, rather like a knight in shining armour, and said that I would be going with you, in fact.

‘I was not going to the immigration detention centre, as prescribed by the British Embassy, I believe, which I find astonishing, frankly.’

The pensioner said he was initially nervous when he arrived at the shelter, but the care he received soon made him feel safe.

‘When I first came here, I was a little bit pensive, thinking, okay, but my stay here has been memorable. I mean, for the right reasons.

‘To be honest with you, the care and warmth I’ve been shown here has been a lesson to me. Ever since I began staying here, I knew I was safe.’

Speaking to others at the centre who had experienced homelessness, Mr Hill said he had feared ending up on the streets himself.

He said: ‘The conditions on the street are absolutely horrendous. I was extremely worried I was going to end up there, but it never happened, thank God.

‘It would be the care and the friendship that I’ve received from the centre and from its staff, as well as you, which have been pretty much unforgettable, and has always helped me to sleep well at night, or sleep reasonably well.’

Mr Hill stayed at the Centre of Dreams as the organisation worked for nearly two months to repatriate him to the UK.

They organised fundraising and made the logistical arrangements to ensure he could finally return to his home country.

Mr Hill is now safely back in the UK, where he is staying in a homeless shelter in London while waiting to enter assisted living.

However, Friso said the money he lost is unlikely to ever be recovered.

The Dutch philanthropist said: ‘He told me, “Finally, I had someone who cared for me.” He admitted that he sometimes suspected he was being scammed, but he did not want to believe it because the relationship made him feel cared for in a way he had not experienced for many years.

‘He lost […] essentially his entire pension. Every month when his pension arrived, he would send almost all of it to the scammer. He then could not pay his rent, electricity or buy food, and was eventually evicted from his condo.’

Friso added that romance scammers often target elderly and vulnerable people who have nobody, building an emotional attachment before draining their life savings.

The suspects were reportedly traced to Nigeria, while Mr Hill’s money had been sent to a Thai mule account – bank accounts used by criminals to collect or launder money obtained through illegal activities such as fraud, scams, and other cybercrimes.

Friso said: ‘We reported the scam to the Yan Nawa District Police. The police took the report and the information about the Thai mule account was passed to the bank, but there was no wider investigation that we are aware of.

‘Unfortunately, I don’t have much hope that Mr Hill will get his money back.’

Acting Police Major Loetchai Phiwlongchai, an investigation officer at Yannawa Police Station, said Mr Hill had filed an official report against the scammers in July.

He said: ‘The complainant has officially filed a report with police, and we have received and recorded the complaint as evidence. The matter will now be handled in accordance with the complainant’s legal rights.’

Plans submitted for new pump track in Pateley Bridge

The community-led scheme at Millennium Green would create a hard-surfaced facility suitable for bikes, scooters and skateboards, which supporters hope will become one of the best pump tracks in North Yorkshire.

A design statement submitted with the planning application reveals the track would be around 110m to 120m long.

Straights would be at least two metres wide.

The clockwise circuit would feature a range of banked corners, known as berms, and rollers, with lower and more gradual features designed to allow less experienced users to build up their skills safely.

Tabletop jumps and more challenging features would provide progression for experienced riders, while the design includes a dedicated hard-standing collection area which would double as the start and finish point and provide somewhere for riders to rest and watch others.

Designers say shallow slopes and access paths have deliberately been included to create a more welcoming and inclusive environment and reduce the risk of falls.

Line markings and directional arrows would also be painted onto the asphalt to show riders the direction of travel, priorities and lanes during busy periods.

The project originated with local volunteers and has been developed with Pateley Bridge Town Council and North Yorkshire Sport.

The scheme is supported by York and North Yorkshire Mayor David Skaith and has received funding from York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority and Sport England’s Movement Fund, with the town council also contributing.

A preferred contractor has already been selected following a tender process, although construction remains dependent on the scheme progressing through planning and other outstanding requirements.

A planning application for the new track has been submitted to North Yorkshire Council.

Joey Barton will remain in custody until his trial next year after a bail application was refused

Former footballer Joey Barton will remain in custody until his trial next year after a bail application was refused.

The 44-year-old had been due to stand trial at Liverpool Crown Court last week accused of causing grievous bodily harm with intent to Kevin Lynch, 51, at £1,440-a-year Huyton and Prescot golf club in Merseyside, on March 8.

But, on Wednesday, the case was adjourned and put back to March next year.

Barton, wearing a grey zip-up fleece, appeared over videolink from HMP Liverpool at a hearing on Monday, when Judge David Potter refused a renewed bail application.

He nodded as the judge remanded him in custody ahead of a pre-trial hearing on December 11.

His trial will take place exactly a year after the alleged assault, meaning the defendant, who was arrested shortly after the incident, will have spent 12 months on remand.

Barton is accused of carrying out the attack on Mr Lynch after they had been drinking together at the golf Club.

Mr Lynch, a former non-league football manager and founder of special education school NexGen Academy, was said to have suffered serious injuries to his eye.

Last week at Liverpool Crown Court an application by Barton’s counsel Tim Forte KC to have the case adjourned so potential new witnesses could be contacted was not resisted by prosecution counsel Alex Leach KC.

Judge Potter said that there were still ‘intractable problems’ which meant that the trial could not start on September 1 and set a new date for March 8, 2027.

Former Manchester City and QPR midfielder Barton, of Widnes, Cheshire, has one England cap and also played for Newcastle, Rangers, Burnley and Marseille.

Dyson’s CameraJet electric toothbrush could change how we brush

Published

Dyson’s CameraJet electric toothbrush could change how we brush

Dyson’s latest product is an electric toothbrush that promises to be like no other. It uses a tiny camera to see what’s going on in your mouth, and as the brush passes the gaps between your teeth, the hybrid device sprays mouthwash to floss. I’ve been testing the toothbrush for weeks, and it could be a game-changer.

The clever idea has been in development for six years, and the toothbrush itself is immaculately engineered, complete with a tiny reservoir for the mouthwash. At the touch of a button on the charging dock, the toothbrush refills the brush with more mouthwash for next time.

Oh, and the company has also devised its own toothpaste, designed to work both optimally and optically with the brush – it’s a non-foaming paste that allows the camera to see the teeth clearly.

The brush comes in Dyson’s signature stylish colours – ceramic blue and pink. Unsurprisingly, this is not a cheap brush. However, at £419.99, it’s half the price of the most expensive Oral-B iO10 brush (though this is on special offer for £300 right now). But is Dyson’s CameraJet toothbrush worth it?

I’ve been using the CameraJet toothbrush since it launched

David Phelan/The Standard

I’ve been using the CameraJet twice a day for a week, plus extra sessions to test its various features. I looked into how complex the set-up is, how long it took and whether the battery needed charging beforehand. I also noted how easy it was to change the brush head, fill with mouthwash, and assemble the dock. Above all, I assessed its brushing capability, how clean my mouth felt afterwards, and how straightforward it was to use the basic and more advanced functions.

Dyson

What we love: Cleaning feels great, the jet flossing is powerful and effective, and the performance is excellent.

Take note: There’s quite the learning curve, and it makes a mess, plus it’s too big for some bathrooms. Also, not cheap.

The Dyson toothbrush, especially when placed in its dock, takes up a lot of space. It will be too big for some bathroom cabinets or shelves. The dock comes with a clear plastic sleeve for travel.

However, once it’s in your hand, it’s easy to grip and doesn’t feel oversized or heavy – though it’s a big departure from slim electric toothbrushes such as the Suri Pro 2.0, for instance.

It’s connected via a USB-C cable which attaches to the dock – you’ll need an adapter to connect it to the shaver plug found in most bathrooms. A separate cable can connect directly into the toothbrush, which is handy when travelling.

The size largely owes to the 12.5ml mouthrinse tank, which is used during brushing. This can be refilled manually or via the dock at the touch of a button.

Dyson describes the tank as “anti-gravity”, meaning mouthwash is dispensed without pause, whichever angle the brush is held at – it works brilliantly.

The head features green and blue bristles designed to get into the gumline while brushing off surface stains. The green outer bristles are soft to suit gums.

The CameraJet is complete with a mouthwash bottle and toothpaste. For the camera to work effectively, you need a non-foaming toothpaste.

“[We didn’t develop our own] because we want to sell and make money out of toothpaste and mouthwash, but because [the toothbrush camera] works best with ours and has been thoroughly tested,” Sir James Dyson told me.

Sir James Dyson told me the brush learns the shape of your mouth over time

David Phelan/The Standard

This toothbrush is unlike any other. Beyond brushing, it offers built-in flossing. “I think it’s only one out of ten people who actually floss, and people spend far too little time in the brushing process in each session,” Sir Dyson told me. “The simple idea was, why can’t you jet between the teeth while you brush?”

To get the most out of it, set it to Brush and Auto-Jet. As well as brushing, it automatically flosses, although you can also brush without flossing or use it purely to jet mouthwash between your teeth. The built-in camera even gives you a live view inside your mouth.

There’s a learning curve, though. You can’t just shove it in your gob and hope for the best. The MyDyson app’s how-to videos recommend holding the brush horizontally, moving it in slow ovals and, crucially, smiling as you brush. The downside is that toothpaste can spray out of your mouth, so watch what you’re wearing. The upside is that the camera can accurately spot the gaps between your teeth.

As the brush passes each gap, you hear a loud click as a powerful jet of mouthwash shoots between your teeth. The result, in my experience, is an exceptionally clean, fresh mouth – more so than with other toothbrushes. Just be prepared to clean the bathroom sink afterwards.

dyson camerajet electric toothbrush review

The toothbrush boasts a built-in mouthwash tank

David Phelan/The Standard

It takes concentration to get the most from this brush. The concept is outstanding, but the reality takes practice. Despite the non-foaming toothpaste, I found Auto-Jet would sometimes stop because the camera couldn’t see clearly enough. I’d spit out the toothpaste, carry on, and it would work perfectly again.

The toothbrush lights tell you when Auto-Jet is struggling, while the smart timer pauses and resumes from where you stopped. Spotting gaps between the front teeth is trickier than with the back teeth, although smiling, as Dyson recommends, helps.

If you think you’ve missed a spot, the middle button triggers a jet manually. The MyDyson app is essential, particularly Live View, which shows exactly what the camera sees so you can fire the conical jet of mouthwash into the right gap. Guided Cleaning also makes sure you spend enough time on each section of your mouth.

The more I used it, the more natural it felt. Sir Dyson told me the brush learns the shape of your mouth over time, improving its performance. He’s been using one for a year himself and says his hygienist now has less remedial work to do.

  • Camera: 100k pixel macro lens camera taking 28 images per second
  • Brush speed: Up to 58,000 vibrations per minute
  • Battery life: 10 days
  • Full recharge: 8 hours
  • Size: 273 x 44 x 44mm
  • Weight: 228g

Is the Dyson CameraJet worth it?

It’s sensational, but the CameraJet is still a work in progress, and while Dyson claims it learns your mouth over time, that hasn’t happened yet. Even so, the feeling of a clean mouth with well-brushed teeth and massaged gums is tremendous. The flossing feature is exceptional – and far more effective than other water flossers I’ve tried.

There’s no getting away from the fact that the brush is big, and many bathrooms will find it tricky to accommodate. The way the toothpaste splashes everywhere because your mouth is open is annoying, but the effectiveness of the flossing justifies the clean-up required afterwards.

This is a genuine innovation. It’s not perfect but, oh boy, it makes your mouth feel great when you’ve used it.

Russia and North Korea open the first road link across shared border

Russia and North Korea opened the first road bridge across their shared border on Monday, a development Russian officials hailed as boosting the nations’ deepening ties.

The bridge over the Tumen River is 1 kilometer (0.6 mile) long and has two lanes and will allow up to 300 vehicles a day to pass through a newly built border crossing point, the Russian government said in a statement.

“I am convinced that the expansion of transport infrastructure near the border will give a powerful boost to the further development of trade, economic, technological, scientific and cultural cooperation between the Russian Federation and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea,” said Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin, who took part in the opening ceremony via video link.

Relations and exchange programs between Russia and North Korea have been flourishing in recent years, with North Korea supplying ammunitions and troops to support Russia’s war against Ukraine.

North Korea has been receiving Russian tourists since February 2024 amid slowly easing pandemic curbs.

North Korea and Russia, which are already served by a railway bridge and air service, agreed in 2024 to construct a bridge for automobiles over the Tumen River, which runs along North Korea’s borders with Russia and China. Construction began last year.

Garden weeds will be gone if you use household item you’d normally throw away

Published

on

Wales Online

Weeds can be a real nuisance in the garden, but the simple household item can get rid of them

Weeds can be frustrating, particularly as they appear to spring up constantly. They’ll flourish practically anywhere there’s room, such as in paving gaps, amongst flower beds and even across the lawn.

There are numerous methods to control them, including applying boiling water, white vinegar and baking soda. However, a gardening expert has suggested an alternative trick – using spare cardboard boxes to prevent weeds from growing.

According to the professional, the technique also helps to enrich the soil, making it an ideal answer for those battling with weeds.

Chris Bonnett, horticulturalist and founder of GardeningExpress, said: “Using leftover cardboard is an eco-friendly method that allows you to recycle old boxes while helping the soil as the cardboard naturally decomposes.

“Laying cardboard over problematic areas helps suppress weeds by blocking out sunlight, which is crucial for them to grow”, reports the Express.

If you have a troublesome spot outdoors, simply cut a section of cardboard to match the area and strip away any plastic tape or labels, as these won’t break down naturally.

Then, place the cardboard flat on the surface, making sure it fully covers the problem zone and is firmly pressed down to avoid any openings.

The expert said: “If smaller pieces of cardboard are all that are at hand, overlap them by around 15cm to stop weeds creeping through the edges to reach the sunlight.”

Once the cardboard is positioned, cover it with a layer of mulch or compost.

This keeps the cardboard in place, enhances its appearance, and helps the soil retain moisture.

According to the expert, this will enable the cardboard to decompose naturally within your garden.

The cardboard should then remain in position to keep weeds at bay while it gradually breaks down and introduces organic matter into the soil.

Chris advocated this approach over reaching for chemical solutions, warning that they can cause “problems” for the remainder of the garden.

He added: “After a few months, the cardboard will begin to decompose, benefiting the soil as brown matter, helping to create a healthier growing environment for the rest of your plants.”
