Ferryhill bakery shortlisted for Best Bakery award again

Shell’s Village Bakery in Ferryhill has been shortlisted for The Northern Echo’s Best Bakery award for a second year running.

Michelle Windress said it was “fabulous” to be recognised by customers again after winning the title last year.

The bakery sells sandwiches, pasties and cakes, serves hundreds of Sunday dinners each week and delivers meals to customers who cannot get to the shop.

Michelle, who is from Darlington and now lives in Chilton, took over the business in September 2020 after 25 years in car sales.

After being furloughed during Covid, she began considering a new direction when the chance to take on the bakery arose.

She said: “We had been furloughed from car sales. We had sold cars for 25 years and, when you get furloughed, it makes you start thinking of all the things you could do and other options.

“One of those things was this bakery coming up and that was something we thought we could take on and build on.”

Michelle said the move had been challenging, but she had enjoyed learning a new trade and growing the business.

She said: “It has been tough. It has been a huge learning curve for me, but I love every minute of it.”

Michelle and her team have built a loyal customer base in Ferryhill, with regulars returning for the bakery’s freshly made food.

The business has also expanded, opening a smaller kiosk in the village offering sandwiches and other bakery items.

Michelle said: “The response is great, people just seem to love the fresh produce.

“The business has been building and building over the years. We have opened another little kiosk now in the same village.

“We do a little less there because we do not do meals, but we do our sandwiches and things from the kiosk, it’s just been great.

“We have very, very loyal customers and it makes the day worthwhile when you get customers like that.”

Shell’s Village Bakery was named The Northern Echo’s Best Bakery last year, with Michelle saying at the time that the win meant even more because it had come from customer support.

She hopes the Ferryhill bakery can win the title again after making The Northern Echo’s Top 10 this year.

She said: “To be nominated once was amazing, but to be nominated twice is just fabulous.

“Last year was absolutely amazing, but the thought that we could do it twice is fabulous.”

Readers can vote with coupons printed in the newspaper, choosing their favourite from the 10 finalists.

Newcastle were ‘preparing for months’ for Eddie Howe departure – Ross Wilson

Published

on

Eddie Howe, wearing a black-and-white tracksuit stop, looks on before a Newcastle match

Jaissle remains unbeaten in his first four games in charge of Newcastle in all competitions.

However, only three of the club’s eight summer signings – Lukas Hornicek, Amar Dedic and Nico Gonzalez – started in the 2-2 draw against Bournemouth.

It felt like a reminder of the time it will take some of the new arrivals to bed in during what Jaissle has repeatedly called a “transition phase”.

Newcastle have forecast a range of financial scenarios, depending on where the club finish this season, but Wilson maintained the German has not been set a specific target for the campaign.

Hopkinson, though, reiterated that Newcastle‘s ultimate ambition is to “consistently and credibly compete” for the top honours in the long run.

After entering into a Uefa settlement, following a breach of the European football governing body’s financial rules, Hopkinson stressed Newcastle needed to be compliant with the game’s regulations to do so.

The Magpies have set out to boost revenues by 50% between now and 2030 – mainly through sponsorship deals – but trading players will remain a key part of the club’s strategy in order to reinvest.

“We want to have players here who are on a journey with us,” Wilson said.

“Equally, if some of those players’ journeys go at rapid speed, they might go somewhere else but, of course, that’s normal. That’s part of football.”

Although Newcastle had prepared for the departures of Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali, to Barcelona and Tottenham Hotspur respectively, the club had never planned to lose talisman Bruno Guimaraes.

Newcastle also had to readjust during the window after top targets Victor Munoz and Johan Manzambi joined Liverpool and Aston Villa respectively.

However, aside from Guimaraes going to Arsenal, Wilson claimed “everything else that happened during the window was part of the plan”.

“That does not mean that every single player [who signed] was the number one name on our list, but that is never the case in any transfer window,” he said.

“Clearly we were disappointed a couple of times but, again, that’s normal.

“No club goes into the window and reaches the end getting every target they set out to get. If they say they did, it is a lie.”

Man, 71, threatened his neighbour with a sword, court hears

Man, 71, threatened his neighbour with a sword, court hears

Noel Rhone, of Towers Avenue, Deane, had been in an altercation with his neighbour, Bolton Crown Court was told.

The defendant was charged with affray in December of last year, which Rhone pleaded guilty to.

The neighbour and Rhone had been keeping up a friendship until last year, the court was told.

Prosecuting, Katie Durham said this coincided with the neighbour getting into a “same sex relationship”, which caused the rupture in the neighbours’ friendship.

She said Rhone had disputes with the neighbour over parking issues, “namely visitors parking in front of or next to his property”, resulting in the neighbour parking down the street.

On December 2, 2025, a visitor parking near Rhone’s address had made him “lose his temper”.

The neighbours were arguing over parking at the time of the incident, when Rhone lunged at her neck and then pushed her, she then kicked him to the ground “in self-defence” and walked off.

Once he got back up, he went inside his property and came back out with a sword, coming towards his neighbour saying “I will chop your head off.”

The sword was likened to a “katana”.

The defendant got into the passenger seat of a van and threatened to chop her head off when he came back.

Defending, Peter Gilmour said the defendant was suffering from emotional issues at the time, including a family member diagnosed with cancer, and the loss of his parents.

Mr Gilmour said that Rhone has grown-up children and grandchildren, as well as being in “good character” for all of his life.

Judge Benjamin Lawrence said Rhone had used an offensive slur against the neighbour and Rhone also said she was the problem.

Judge Lawrence added: “In an argument you shouted, she called you a bully, you lunged at her neck then you pushed her, she feared for her life, and you left a small cut.

“She kicked you to the floor and walked away, and after you picked up a sword and threatened to chop her head off and put her windows through.

“Residents were also present.”

Rhone was sentenced to 14 months suspended for 18 months.

The judge said he handed down a suspended sentence due to Rhone, having a family and of usual good character.

Rhone also has to serve 100 hours of unpaid work, as well pay a fine of £500 to be paid back at £100 a month, as he is receiving a pension.

Judge Lawrence said: “You should not have been here in the first place; do not come back here again.”

Critics Rip Trump After He Revives His Most Dubious 9/11 Claim

Critics Rip Trump After He Revives His Most Dubious 9/11 Claim

Donald Trump claimed he and his workers helped at ground zero the day after the 9/11 terrorist attacks ― a claim he’s made before, despite no evidence that he or his employees were doing so.

“I went down. I was building a building in New York and I had a lot of construction workers,” Trump told Fox News host Trey Gowdy. “And I went down there very shortly thereafter ― the following day, you couldn’t go down the same day, but like the following day, very very quickly afterwards ― and we worked long and hard.

“But it was just so terrible and so hopeless, it was so hopeless, such a terrible thing.”

Trump has made variations on this claim many times over the years, but there’s no evidence he worked at ground zero or provided hundreds of his own workers to the efforts there.

“Everyone who helped clear the rubble — and I was there, and I watched, and I helped a little bit,” he claimed in 2016.

In 2019, while speaking to first responders, he also recalled working at the scene.

“I was down there also, but I’m not considering myself a first responder,” he said. “But I was down there. I spent a lot of time down there with you.”

Trump did visit the site two days after the attack on September 13, but it’s not clear what, if anything, he did.

In an article published a day later, Newsday described Trump at the scene with “every hair in place and impeccably dressed in a black suit, pressed white shirt and red tie, walking into the plaza with his cellular phone to his ear.”

The reporter even picked up what he was saying into his phone: “No, no. The building’s gone.”

In an interview that same day with a German TV station a few blocks away, Trump claimed he had a “couple of hundred people” either at the scene or on their way.

Trump also visited the New York Stock Exchange in lower Manhattan a week after the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

He’s also shared a meme claiming he was there “with hundreds of workers that he paid out of his own pocket.”

But that’s never been corroborated, and those who were on the scene have doubts.

Richard Alles, a retired New York City Fire Department deputy chief, told Snopes he never saw Trump or Trump employees on the scene.

“This is the first I’m hearing of it,” Alles told the website in 2018. “There would have been no need for that. Between police, fire and the construction crews, we had it all covered.”

He said construction crews came from the trade unions, not Trump.

And that’s just one of the many unsubstantiated claims he’s made about 9/11 over the years.

He’s claimed he lost “hundreds” of friends that day, but never named any. Shortly after the towers fell, he bragged that he now owned the tallest building in lower Manhattan, which was both insensitive and untrue. He’s said he witnessed people jump from the Twin Towers from the windows in his apartment in Trump Tower, which was four miles away. And he has insisted ― falsely ― that he saw “thousands” of Muslims “cheering” the attacks in Jersey City, New Jersey.

Critics on X hit back at his latest claim that he brought workers to help at ground zero shortly after the attacks:

Horoscope today: Your daily guide for Sunday, April 5, 2026

Aries (March 21st–April 20th)

Today feels like a reset button. You notice where impatience has been driving decisions and choose a calmer approach instead. One measured move works better than three rushed ones. Speed feels good, but accuracy lasts longer. Beware lending money to who you already know is unreliable.

Taurus (April 21st–May 21st)

A small interruption early on shows you what really matters today. You adjust without fuss and feel steadier for it. Comfort comes from reliability, not routine alone. When you honour what supports you, everything else settles into place. Others match the mood you set now.

Gemini (May 22nd–June 21st)

Today brings a choice between reacting and responding, and you choose wisely. A conversation goes smoother once you listen fully instead of filling the silence, or the missing blanks yourself. Clarity grows when words are used carefully. Say what counts and leave the rest.

Cancer (June 22nd–July 23rd)

You become aware of how much emotional energy is tied up in one situation. Today you loosen that attachment and breathe easier. Care doesn’t require carrying everything, my friend. When you put yourself back in the picture, balance returns.

Leo (July 24th–August 23rd)

Today highlights where pride has kept you overcommitted. Stepping back feels unfamiliar, but freeing. Confidence strengthens when boundaries are respected. You don’t need to prove your value through effort. You already did that last month, my friend.

Virgo (August 24th–September 23rd)

The Sun continues to sharpen focus, and today rewards practical thinking. One tidy decision improves flow instantly. You don’t need to do everything, just the right thing. Order creates ease. Chaos comes from encouraging who only ever brings drama.

Libra (September 24th–October 23rd)

You notice how quickly things improve when you stop smoothing over discomfort. Today you choose honesty delivered calmly. Balance grows when truth is spoken early. Peace doesn’t come from silence, it comes from fairness, especially concerning family members.

Scorpio (October 24th–November 22nd)

A moment of insight changes how you see a power dynamic. You realise you don’t need control to feel secure. Letting go creates movement. What’s meant to shift will do so once space is given. You no longer want to control others, but you want to claim your freedom of choice.

Sagittarius (November 23rd–December 21st)

Today shows you that freedom improves with intention. Follow what you feel and say what’s really in your heart. One clear choice sets the tone for the rest of the week. Direction replaces restlessness. When you know where you’re going, effort feels lighter.

Capricorn (December 22nd–January 20th)

You handle a responsibility efficiently today and realise how far you’ve come. Those with power realise you’re meant for great things and they’re right. Progress doesn’t need drama. Consistent action builds confidence. When you trust your method, results follow.

Aquarius (January 21st–February 19th)

Today brings awareness around an old habit you’re ready to outgrow. You don’t analyse it, you simply choose differently. Change sticks when it’s simple. One shift improves the whole day. Remember who you are, my friend, and don’t accept a version of what you want.

Pisces (February 20th–March 20th)

You’re reminded today that clarity is kinder than assumption. A gentle truth spoken aloud prevents confusion later. Compassion doesn’t mean silence. When you express yourself honestly, relationships soften. You see this now, thanks to Mars.

Canada braces for prolonged trade war as counter-tariffs on US take effect

Published

on

A woman with short reddish hair with a neutral expression faces the camera while sitting a room with black and brown wallpaper.

Canada’s retaliatory tariffs on a range of US goods came into effect on Tuesday, with no sign of a trade deal on the horizon.

The counter-tariffs will apply to nearly C$28bn ($20bn; £15bn) worth of American products, from steel to furniture to cotton T-shirts, and will be as high as 50%.

Fresh fish and lobster were also on the list, but Canada later omitted them after pushback from its seafood industry – a sign of the tricky balance it has to strike as it retaliates against its largest trading partner.

Both US and Canadian officials have said they would like to strike a deal, but no movement has been made to resume talks after they collapsed in late August.

Speaking to reporters last week, Prime Minister Mark Carney said that Canada is still in search of a deal with the US that is “durable” and in the best interests of both countries.

“We’re ready to sit down and and strike that deal when the Americans are ready,” Carney said.

US trade representative Jamieson Greer, meanwhile, said on Thursday that the ball is in Canada’s court.

“We offered them the best deal, they looked at it square in the face and turned around,” Greer said in an interview with Fox News, adding that there has been sparse communication with the Canadians since talks collapsed.

In a separate interview with Canadian broadcaster CBC, Greer cautioned against retaliation and suggested the US might hit back by banning the import of some Canadian products.

President Donald Trump threatened on Monday to halt all US business with Canada-based airplane maker Bombardier unless it moved its manufacturing south.

The company is one of the largest in the country, contributing over C$7bn to Canada’s annual GDP in 2024, according to a report commissioned by Bombarier by public accounting firm PwC.

North Yorkshire artist Lucy Pittaway unveils abstract art

Lucy Pittaway, celebrated for her vibrant depictions of rural landscapes across the Yorkshire Dales and Lake District, has released her first-ever abstract collection.

The new body of work explores raw emotion and transformation through six limited-edition abstract pieces, marking what she describes as the most significant creative shift of her career.

Ms Pittaway said: “This is not a collection inspired by place.

“It is a collection inspired by feeling.

“Each piece has been created during a period of change and reflection and all of them are incredibly personal.”

Known for her uplifting and accessible artwork, Ms Pittaway has built a loyal international following over more than a decade.

Her latest collection abandons representation entirely, instead exploring instinctive expression through themes of confusion, passion, excitement, anger, conflict and energy.

She said: “The collection is really a complete departure from anything I’ve created before.

“I had a real pull to create something that represented what was going on inside, something with no view, no place, no reference point.

“It was a kind of turmoil that needed somewhere to go.

“So I let it.

“There was no plan for where each piece would end up.

“No sketch of a destination.

“Just paint, and me making the decision to keep going until something true came out the other side.

“That’s what this collection is all about, and why it’s so very personal to me.”

Recurring motifs include the lightness of a feather and the heaviness of a storm, contrasting delicacy and freedom with density and turbulence.

Ms Pittaway said: “This isn’t the Lucy Pittaway you’re used to.

“It’s the one underneath.”

Justin and Hailey Bieber shared a passionate kiss for WYouth magazine's inaugural cover this week, days after sparking drama with a seemingly tense chat at Billie Eilish's brother's wedding

Justin and Hailey Bieber shared a passionate kiss for WYouth magazine‘s inaugural cover this week, days after sparking drama with a seemingly tense chat at Billie Eilish’s brother’s wedding.

The 32-year-old pop star and 29-year-old skincare mogul locked lips for the steamy cover headlined ‘Justin and Hailey Bieber, more in love than ever.’

And they gave readers a glimpse at their relationship as they brought a camera into their bedroom, resulting in very intimate and affectionate snapshots.

There was no shortage of snogging from the Biebers as they lounged in a bed of white sheets in photos they provided to the publication.

The proud husband captured Hailey in an ivory slip dress, and she photographed him shirtless as he modeled orange shorts from his SKYLRK clothing line.

It comes after the husband and wife were seen having an intense exchange at Finneas O’Connell’s recent wedding to Claudia Sulewski in photos obtained by the Daily Mail.

However, they couldn’t keep their hands off each other in the new photos, released on Monday. They opened up about their marriage in the candid, corresponding interview.

When asked who is each of their ‘favorite artist of all time,’ Hailey snubbed her singer-songwriter hubby as she answered that it’s ‘way too hard to pick one,’ with Justin echoing the sentiment.

They also both agreed that their ‘favorite way to relax’ is by going to a spa retreat.

Following what appeared to be a dispute at O’Connell’s Santa Barbara nuptials, friends told the Daily Mail the Biebers, whose son Jack just turned two, are a passionate couple who fight as fiercely as they love.

‘Hailey bickers with Justin all the time, so a wedding spat, if any, was probably just a minor flare-up,’ the source said. ‘They are crazy in love and committed to each other, make no mistake, and eventually want another child.’

At the star-studded ceremony in late August, the couple spoke animatedly, with Hailey gesturing in a dramatic fashion before walking away from her beau.

Body language expert Judi James told the Daily Mail: ‘The way that Hailey looks back at her husband as he walks away after their animated conversation gives the impression of tension or drama here.’

James added Justin’s ‘gently hunched posture and the way his arms hang slightly in front of his torso makes him look less motivated and less positive here.’

It comes after the pair were seen having an intense exchange at Finneas O'Connell's recent wedding to Claudia Sulewski in photos obtained by the Daily Mail

However, the analyst noted that it did not appear the two were arguing, explaining: ‘Hailey has been waving her arms and pointing, although not at him, so no signal of conflict.’

They tied the knot in a New York City courthouse on September 13, 2018.

And in 2019, they enjoyed a large-scale wedding with family and friends, later documenting the celebration on YouTube.

Elsewhere in their WYouth chat, Justin said golf is his favorite hobby, while Hailey admitted: ‘I don’t have a fun hobby.’

Hailey shared the WYouth snaps on Instagram with her nearly 60 million followers, writing in the caption, ‘Jack’s Mom and Dad 4 @wyouth 1st issue.’

This year has been monumental for the power couple, as they’ve hit notable achievements in their respective careers.

They have wielded their influence with back-to-back business collaborations.

The husband and wife dropped a co-designed fashion collection under Justin’s clothing line SKYLRK.

Is Coronation Street on tonight and why isn’t Tuesday’s episode on ITVX and YouTube?

ITV soap fans are facing a disruption to their regular viewing, with Coronation Street and Emmerdale taken off air tonight

The week has only just got underway, and soap fans are already facing a disruption to their regular viewing, with Coronation Street taken off air tonight.

When the ITV soap, which is filmed in Salford, returned to our screens on Monday (September 6) night, DC Kit Green was seen being left shaken by an unexpected breast cancer diagnosis in another hard-hitting health storyline for the long-running show.

Kit, who arrived in Weatherfield in 2024 after Bernie Winter went searching for her long-lost son, will be diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer, which has spread to his lymph nodes.

The discovery comes after the family is made aware that they may carry the familial BRCA gene following the passing of estranged Aunt Celeste, who left behind the devastating family secret.

But as mum Bernie (Jane Hazelgrove) and half-sister Gemma (Dolly Rose Campbell) face testing, unbeknownst to them and the viewers, until now, Kit (Jacob Roberts) has already been seeking medical help after concerns for his own health.

Following the diagnosis scenes, Corrie fans will now have to wait for the story to continue on Wednesday (September 9) night. That’s because Tuesday’s (September 8) episode has been taken off air, alongside Emmerdale, to make way for live coverage of the National Television Awards.

The star-studded awards ceremony, now in its 31st year, will be hosted for the sixth time by comedian Joel Dommett at The O2 in London, and will be broadcast live on ITV1 and ITVX from 8pm.

This year, the NTAs are celebrating their first all-female drama performance shortlist – with Gavin And Stacey star Ruth Jones to compete with Ella Bruccoleri, Judy Parfitt, Sheridan Smith and Vicky McClure for the prize.

Meanwhile, reality documentaries starring Tyson Fury, Jeremy Clarkson, Stacey Solomon and Joe Swash are also among the shows competing for a prize. They have been nominated in a new category recognising the rise of fly-on-the-wall celebrity-led shows, with At Home With The Furys, Clarkson’s Farm and Stacey & Joe to go head-to-head for the inaugural award.

Their competition includes Fletchers’ Family Farm, in which Emmerdale actor Kelvin Fletcher turns to rural life, and the fishing programme led by comedians Bob Mortimer and Paul Whitehouse – Mortimer & Whitehouse: Gone Fishing.

While the soaps may now be on air, the soap stars will be out in force. Serial drama sees nominations for Corrie and Emmerdale, going up against Casualty, EastEnders and Hollyoaks – while EastEnders’ Aaron Thiara, Emmerdale’s Jeff Hordley and Coronation Street’s Gareth Pierce are among those up for serial drama performance.
