Latest Anthropic horror story chills with tales of kamikaze drone swarms and bioweapons research

In the latest installment of “my AI model is more dangerous than yours,” Anthropic on Thursday warned that cybercriminals and state-sponsored hackers alike are using its Claude models to automate cyberattacks, build kamikaze drone swarms, conduct mass surveillance operations, and try to develop an even more dangerous version of a deadly mosquito-borne virus.

The baddies have come a long way since November, when an earlier Anthropic report documented Chinese spies using Claude to automate digital intrusions and steal sensitive data at a handful of critical organizations. Now everyone from ShinyHunters to Russian freelancers is getting in on the illicit model usage.

This is not to say that Anthropic – nor any other frontier AI lab – plans to slow down its model development or testing initiatives, or take responsibility when its AI commits crimes. It does, however, “hope that the findings in this report will help other developers recognize similar patterns on their own platforms, give governments and civil society a clearer view of how emerging threats take shape, and strengthen collective defenses.”

The model maker’s latest very lengthy report on AI misuse covers activity Anthropic disrupted between December 2025 and August 2026 across seven “harm areas” where miscreants used – or attempted to use – Claude Haiku, Sonnet, and Opus models for evil. 

These span cyber operations, influence operations, surveillance, scams and fraud, biological misuse, conventional weapons development, and distillation. Anthropic also noted that its most powerful Claude Fable or Mythos-class models weren’t used, except in one distillation case.

Even without those most advanced systems, the case studies in the report highlight some pretty bad behavior.

Autonomous cyberattacks

For example, a Russian espionage crew that Anthropic tracks as GTG-20006 – the state-sponsored cyber espionage arm of Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR), also known as Midnight Blizzard, APT29, or Cozy Bear – increased the speed of its attacks by using AI to automate the entire kill chain. Anthropic identified more than 20 organizations targeted in these attacks, including embassies, think tanks, defense-industrial companies, and government, defense, and intelligence agencies across Ukraine, Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and North Africa.

“We observed GTG-20006 operate through customized AI-driven workflows that automated much of their operations from development, infrastructure acquisition, phishing, persistence through command and control, to data exfiltration,” Anthropic said.

Meanwhile, “multiple clusters” linked to the data-theft-and-extortion gang ShinyHunters used Claude to scale their smash-and-grab operations. One affiliate that specializes in supply-chain attacks breached a software-as-a-service provider, and used that foothold to steal data from about 200 of the SaaS company’s customer organizations. 

“It then conducted a session-store dump containing over 2,100 Azure AD token sets spanning more than 40 corporate tenants in about 34 hours,” according to the report. “AI agents performed nearly all of the work.”

Biological misuse

Moving on to a serious health-and-safety risk that looks even scarier when given an AI boost: Anthropic’s report documents five cases of users in “unsupported regions” using Claude to support biological weapons development.

In one, a scientist attempted to use Claude to help write a grant application for research related to chikungunya virus, a mosquito-borne virus that can cause severe disease and death. The research focused on the virus’ transmissibility and immune evasion properties, which Anthropic admits could be used to help develop better vaccines. 

Or “it could also be used to make the pathogen more dangerous,” the report authors said, noting that the military research institute where the research would be performed gave them “cause of concern.”

In May, Anthropic discovered a user outside the US using Claude in their research on adaptations of highly pathogenic avian influenza – bird flu.

“Unlike other influenza variants, H5 viruses (of which this avian virus is one) often show striking brain involvement in cats, foxes, ferrets, and some human cases,” the report says. “A pandemic variant with such properties would be especially concerning due to its potential to increase disease severity, confuse diagnosis, and hinder treatment.”

Weapons development

Since its November report, Anthropic has identified new categories for Claude misuse that violate its terms of service. One of these involves users outside the US using Claude to develop software for conventional weapons – firearms, missiles, armed drones, bombs, and other munitions, plus targeting and control systems that operate them. 

In its new report, the model maker shares details on six cases: three in China, two in Russia, and one in Yemen.

In Yemen, a weapons development program used Claude instead of human software engineers to develop guidance, navigation, and control (GNC) software that steers and stabilizes a flying vehicle. “Our safeguards blocked many of their requests, but not all of them,” Anthropic says. 

The same team used Claude to try to develop guided weapons. While Anthropic says it has no evidence that the actors produced an operational device, it says they did test-fire a guided rocket.

“We banned accounts associated with the actors and shared threat information with public- and private-sector partners to mitigate risks posed by the actors,” the report says. “Nevertheless, we have evidence that the actors had already built an offline simulation toolkit that does not rely on Claude or other engineering computing environments.”

In China, someone used Claude to draft a Chinese-language specification for an anti-torpedo fire control system, and then benchmark their system against specific US anti-torpedo and anti-submarine programs. Anthropic assesses that the user was associated with a Chinese defense industry manufacturer aiming to produce a weapons specification and acquisition proposal for the People’s Liberation Army Navy.

According to the report:

The actor used Claude to write the acquisition proposal, refining it over many drafts. After each draft, the actor instructed Claude to role-play a hostile expert reviewer to critique the proposal, then used that feedback to sharpen the next version. In parallel, the actor used Claude to build pieces of the anti-torpedo weapons system’s fire control software and a test matrix to validate them.

Anthropic uncovered this during an internal investigation into suspected weapons development and banned the account.

In yet another case, Anthropic identified a likely Russian “freelance team” attempting to build a full-stack autonomous first-person-view (FPV) kamikaze drone swarm. They used Claude to write and test the code, building the drones’ core software system. Anthropic also banned these accounts. ®

Once upon a time, you had to carefully budget your microcontroller’s resources if you wanted to do something as simple as flash a bunch of LEDs. These days, they’re powerful enough to humiliate the game consoles of yesteryear. [alexkid77] demonstrates this well, having the ESP32-P4 run Tomb Raider.

Now, [alexkid77] hasn’t gone so far as to create a PlayStation emulator on the ESP32 or anything quite like that. Instead, this is a port—and not of the original Tomb Raider release, either. [alexkid77] started with OpenLarathe classic game running in an open-source engine. With the ESP32-P4 having two cores running at 400 MHz each, there was plenty of processing power on tap to run the engine with a software renderer at 320×240, which is hardware scaled up to 1024×600 via the Pixel Processing Accelerator (PPA) built into the chip. There’s also stereo audio with an ES8311 codec hooked up, while input is via a USB HID keyboard.

It’s funny to think that it could actually be cheaper and quicker to get Tomb Raider running on an ESP32 and a cheap LCD display versus actually going out to buy a PlayStation and an original game disc. But that’s the way the cookie crumbles in 2026. At least you don’t have to play it on an S3 Verge.

Anthropic Says It Blocked Possible Efforts to Build Biological Weapons

Anthropic says it has disrupted several cases this year in which scientists used Claude for biological research that could potentially aid bioweapons development. “In a report describing misuses of its A.I. models, Anthropic said it could not determine whether the research served a legitimate or nefarious purpose because valid biological inquiry — the kind that can lead to breakthroughs like vaccines — can also help engineer dangerous pathogens,” reports The New York Times. “In the face of that uncertainty, Anthropic said it erred on the side of caution because the consequences of missing malicious activity could be severe.” From the report: The potential for cutting-edge A.I. models to facilitate the development of known or entirely new biological pathogens is among the gravest concerns experts have about a technology that is developing so rapidly that even its leading architects doubt whether humans will be able to fully control it. Andrew Weber, a senior fellow on the Council on Strategic Risks who reviewed Anthropic’s report before its release, said the findings were “chilling examples of state-sponsored biological weapons developers tapping into the rapidly advancing capabilities” of leading A.I. models.

The lengthy report Anthropic published on Thursday cataloged a litany of misuses of its A.I. models, including the chatbot Claude, over the past eight months. Some examples were similar to past disclosures from Anthropic and other A.I. labs, including suspected Chinese and Iranian government-linked actors targeting dissident and diaspora communities for surveillance.

The report also highlighted cases of Russian state media using Claude to generate online propaganda masquerading as independent reporting, including fabricated claims about an election in Moldova. Anthropic documented another genre of abuse it said was new: attempts to use Claude to develop software for conventional weapons design and development, including firearms, missiles, armed drones and bombs. It detailed three cases in China, two in Russia and one in Yemen. The report does not identify by name which parties were involved in the Yemeni case, but the context makes clear that it is referring to the Iran-backed Houthi militia.

Latest Apple Watch Can Grab Snippets of Conversation Without Both Speakers' Consent

Apple’s new Audio Intelligence features for the Apple Watch Series 12 are drawing privacy concerns because they can process nearby conversations without explicit consent from everyone involved. “Live Rewind lets you instantly see the last 15 seconds of a conversation as text,” Apple explains in its technical summary (PDF). “Siri Recap summarizes conversations throughout your day and produces high-level Apple Intelligence-generated notes so you can stay present in the moment and catch up later.” The Register reports: The latest Apple Watch comes with Audio Intelligence, a set of AI audio processing capabilities tuned for the company’s S11 chip. Its features include: Sound Recognition, Music Recognition with Shazam, Live Rewind, and Siri Recap. […] With the double-press of the Digital Crown — as Apple grandly refers to the button on its Watch — Live Rewind takes in an audio stream from the Watch microphone, processes it in a Secure Exclave on the S11 chip, and routes the data to the user’s nearby iPhone, which runs a speech-to-text algorithm on the 15-second audio segment. The resulting text is saved and the audio is discarded.

The wearer’s Watch emits an audible tone, even in silent mode, to alert those in the vicinity and provides a visual cue for those able to see the face of the device. Nonetheless, bystanders alerted to the recording — to the extent they recognize the meaning of the tone — have not consented to being recorded, which is a legal requirement in 11 US states that have all-party consent laws.

Apple characterizes its implementation of brief eavesdropping as respectful of personal privacy. It makes that claim in a section titled, “How Live Rewind respects those around you,” citing the audible chime and visual on-screen animation. Siri Recap, meanwhile, “summarizes conversations throughout your day and produces high-level Apple Intelligence-generated notes so you can stay present in the moment and catch up later.”

This too, Apple describes as an act of respect. “By design, Siri Recap does not create a recording, does not produce a verbatim transcript, and does not identify and attribute speakers,” Apple’s technical documentation explains. “The output is a brief, high-level summary, comparable to notes a person might write after a conversation. There is no audible signal because no raw audio is retained, and there is no way to reconstruct the original audio from a Siri Recap or share raw audio with anyone.”

No, you won’t be able to play two videos at once on iPhone Duo

There are two displays and multitasking options for iPhone Duo, but that doesn’t mean you’ll be able to play two videos at the same time.

If you’ve ever been scrolling a social media app while listening to music, you’ve likely had the frustrating experience of having the music pause randomly. That’s because the social media app took over as the primary audio provider.

The same effect occurs whenever you’re watching video on iPhone or iPad. Picture-in-picture, split view, or even dual screens won’t let a user play two videos at once, even on iPhone Duo.

While this may seem obvious to some readers, there was some question given that there are two distinctly different displays. Technically speaking, you could pair two sets of AirPods and play one video on the outer display and one on the inner display at the same time.

However, that use case isn’t available. There are some features, like in FaceTime, that utilize the multiple displays at once, but not for video.

There’s even a new multitasking view that lets users pin a video from an app like Apple TV to the top of the iPhone Duo while a second app remains active at the bottom. If the second app starts playing a video, the top video will pause.

The iPhone Duo still runs iOS, so it will have similar limitations to other iPhones in some cases. It will be available to pre-order on October 16 and ships on October 23.

Climate 'Feedback Loops' Could Worsen Global Warming By 30%, Study Finds

An anonymous reader quotes a report from The Guardian: Rising global temperatures caused by the burning of fossil fuels are transforming the world’s forests, wetlands and tundra to the point they are releasing emissions that could further worsen global heating by as much as 30%, a new study has found. As the world heats up, permafrost in the high latitudes is thawing, fiercer wildfires are burning in drying forests and wetlands and lakes are warming. All of these changes are themselves causing the release of planet-heating methane and carbon dioxide locked in trees and soils, therefore worsening the climate crisis, the paper states.

While scientists have long known of these “feedback loops” that amplify the impact of direct pollution from burning coal, oil and gas, the emissions from natural sources are largely unaccounted for in climate projections. This additional heating is however significant, researchers found, with emissions from natural sources set to amplify global heating by 20% to 30% by the end of this century. This would add an estimated 0.2C to 0.4C to the global average temperature by this time, depending on the overall action taken by countries to combat the climate crisis.

[…] This latest paper makes clear that action by countries to cut fossil fuel pollution will still lessen the amount of additional emissions that come from landscapes. Under the most optimistic climate scenario where emissions are cut quickly, natural sources will add 0.2C of warming, the paper found. Under a worse case higher emissions scenario, 0.4C will likely be added. Current policies put in place by governments are likely to see the global temperature rise to 2.6C above pre-industrial times, according to Climate Action Tracker. This will likely cause severe disruption and hardship to billions of people through sea level rise, crop losses and other consequences. “This hidden multiplier is missing from the models guiding climate policy, so those models are likely underestimating how much warming is coming — and overestimating how much carbon we can still afford to emit,” said Sam Abernethy, a scientist at Spark Climate Solutions who led the research, published in Environmental Research Letters.

The disruption of the worldâ(TM)s carbon cycles is now being seen in “real time,” said Rob Jackson, a Stanford University scientist and study co-author. “The results are a wake-up call, and itâ(TM)s imperative that they be included in the next generation of climate policies,” he added. “Failure to do so will make meeting the worldâ(TM)s climate goals less and less likely.”

Why You Might Not Need to Upgrade

Before you drop all those hard-earned dollars, remember that you probably don’t need the latest iPhone. If you have an older iPhone, Apple does a good job of updating the software (the iPhone 11 Pro is still supported), and for hardware issues, your iPhone might be repairable; maybe it needs a battery replacement or these troubleshooting tips. Don’t feel like you have to spring for Apple’s shiny new thing.

Sadly, Apple raised iPhone Pro prices this year, so both models are $100 more expensive than the iPhone 17 Pro series.

iPhone Duo, iPhone 18 Pro, and iPhone 18 Pro Max

We’ll start by looking at what’s the same across the iPhone 18 models this year.

All three new iPhones have Apple’s A20 Pro chip inside, and, you guessed it, this is Apple’s most powerful chip ever. Now, iPhones are already the most capable phones for raw compute power, but the A20 Pro promises a significant jump in performance (around 20 percent faster and 30 percent more efficient than the last generation). It also packs a new neural engine to power on-device AI and a new thermal design with a larger vapor chamber to keep things cool. For the iPhone Duo, the A20 Pro has a display engine to ensure smooth transitions between two screens. While Apple doesn’t list the RAM, every model is rumored to have 12 GB.

While they come in different sizes and the Duo has two, every iPhone features an OLED screen that Apple calls a Super Retina XDR display. They also have ProMotion technology, otherwise known as a 120-Hz refresh rate. These adaptive refresh rates can drop as low as 1 Hz when there’s little activity on the screen, enabling features like the always-on display without draining the battery too much.

The displays are protected by the scratch-resistant and antireflective Ceramic Shield 2, the same as last year’s iPhone 17 range. And they can go from 1 nit up to 3,000 nits of brightness. Only the iPhone Duo has a custom nano-texture finish on the interior screen, giving it a matte look that’s designed to reduce glare and crease visibility.

All the phones have an IP68 rating for water and dust resistance, meaning they can survive a short dunk in fresh water. They all come in four storage options (256 GB, 512 GB, 1 TB, or 2 TB), support Qi2 magnetic wireless charging (MagSafe), USB-C 3.2, Dual SIM, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, Thread, and Ultra-Wideband (UWB). It also has Siri AI, Apple Intelligence, Emergency SOS via Satellite, and Crash Detection.

Norway spent 40 minutes convincing a helicopter’s GPS it was flying into the sea

In brief: A Norwegian rescue helicopter and a small aircraft took off over Andøya in 2024, but the routes visible to satellite-navigation receivers told a different story. On tracking screens, the helicopter appeared to make a series of tight, overlapping turns. The plane seemed to trace sharp, unnatural patterns in the air. Neither display reflected the aircraft’s actual flight path.

The false tracks were created as part of Jammertest, an annual Norwegian exercise that examines how equipment responds when satellite-navigation signals are disrupted or manipulated.

Held on the island of Andøya, roughly 300 kilometers north of the Arctic Circle, the event brings together engineers, public agencies, and companies that depend on Global Navigation Satellite Systems, or GNSS.

The exercise, scheduled for mid-September this year, has become more relevant as real-world satellite interference has intensified around Russia’s war in Ukraine. An RAF aircraft encountered GPS jamming near the Russian border in May. In September 2025, Sweden’s Transport Agency said it was dealing with interference every day. Experts also warned in June 2026 that Russian satellites had transmitted interference from orbit, briefly disrupting GPS signals across Europe.

Aviation offers the clearest example of the problem because the effects are visible immediately. But GNSS interference can extend far beyond a flight deck or a map display. Satellite networks such as GPS provide not only location data but also highly accurate time. That timing supports communications networks, power grids, transport systems, and financial markets, where systems must remain synchronized.

Jammertest is built around the possibility that a receiver may lose that signal or, more troublingly, accept a false one. Jamming overwhelms the signal so that a receiver cannot use it. Spoofing sends a stronger counterfeit signal that can make equipment report an incorrect position or time.

The difference is important for infrastructure operators. A sudden loss of satellite data may be detected quickly, allowing a system to switch to backup timing. Spoofing can be harder to catch. If equipment continues to receive what appears to be valid data, it may distribute inaccurate timing or location information before anyone recognizes the problem.

At the 2024 event, Harald Hauglin, chief engineer of time and frequency metrology at the Norwegian Metrology Service, and his team demonstrated that spoofing can be a slow-moving risk. They gradually increased the strength of a spoofing signal over about 40 minutes. As the decoy signal became more powerful, a map display shifted the test site’s reported location away from its real position and into the Norwegian Sea.

The positional error was easy to see. Measuring the effect on time required a different setup. The team compared a GNSS-synchronized clock exposed to interference with a reference clock connected by fiber-optic cable to a receiver beyond the test area. The difference between the two was tracked in nanoseconds, revealing how a manipulated signal can slowly move a clock away from the correct time.

That is a particular concern for systems that need a common clock to operate. A power grid or mobile network can continue operating for some time after losing GNSS, but its ability to do so depends on the quality of its backup equipment. Local clocks, atomic references, and fiber-optic links can maintain precise timing, though building and maintaining them adds cost.

The more difficult scenario is a spoofing event that goes unnoticed. Rather than forcing a system to use its backup, it could continue feeding the system bad data. Over time, that may cause a wider synchronization problem across connected networks.

Jammertest is intended to identify these weaknesses before they appear in an actual disruption. Norway and other governments are considering how much redundancy is needed as GNSS interference becomes a more regular feature of the security environment. Fiber-based timing networks and atomic clocks are among the options. Hauglin’s White Rabbit patch refers to White Rabbit, a CERN-developed system that distributes time across fiber-optic networks with accuracy better than one nanosecond.

Such systems can reduce dependence on satellite signals, but they do not replicate every service GNSS provides. Dana Goward, co-founder of the Resilient Timing and Navigation Foundation, said the answer will require several layers of protection rather than one replacement technology. “There is no silver bullet, which is why you need a combination of systems,” he told the BBC.

GPT-Live-1 makes speaking to AI models more fluid

OpenAI has launched a version of its latest real-time full-duplex voice model as an API, allowing software developers to implement more responsive voice-enabled apps and conversational workflows.

GPT-Live-1 debuted in July, offering a way to interact through spoken prompts and responses instead of through typed text. Initially available through the ChatGPT interface, the voice model can now be reached via API calls.

As a full-duplex model, GPT-Live-1 can listen and generate speech at the same time, which aids fluid communication. People often talk over one another and may find it frustrating to take turns speaking and listening as if using half-duplex handheld radios.

OpenAI says it has focused on allowing developers implementing GPT-Live-1 to customize how users of business apps experience voice interaction and associated workflows.

“A core GPT‑Live‑1 strength, smooth interruption handling, is already delivering business impact: in early evaluations, Speak found that GPT‑Live‑1 gave learners more time to think before the language tutor responded, cutting interruptions by almost 80 percent versus previous turn-based systems,” the company said.

GPT-Live-1 is designed to handle spoken conversation while a backend model (eg, GPT-6 Astra or a more affordable option for rote tasks) handles information lookup, tool usage, and task management.

It represents a step up from OpenAI’s Realtime API, which debuted in 2024. In the Tau3 voice-agent intelligence benchmark, which assesses spoken customer-service tasks relevant to airlines, retailers, and telecom companies, GPT-Live-1 scores 86.2 percent, compared to 45.7 percent for GPT-Realtime-2.1 and 42.4 percent for GPT-Realtime-2.

Citing its own evaluations, OpenAI said GPT-Live-1 performs 30 percent better than GPT-Realtime-2.1 in Full Duplex Bench performance, while also outperforming its predecessor in turn-taking latency and interactive behavior.

Yelp has been using GPT-Live-1 for the Yelp Host service, and has nice things to say about the technology as it applies to the company’s AI restaurant reservation system.

“With GPT-Live-1, every call is more conversational and responsive,” said Akhil Kuduvalli Ramesh, chief product officer at Yelp, in a statement. “Yelp Host now gives restaurants an advanced voice AI that delivers exceptional guest experiences, captures revenue opportunities they may have otherwise missed, and helps staff focus on serving guests instead of answering the phone.”

Yelp does not address whether restaurant customers making reservations welcome the more free-flowing robo-banter or simply accept it because it’s better than waiting on hold to chat with a person.

GPT-Live-1 costs $0.05 per minute of usage, on top of whatever backend model is running. Custom voices can be negotiated with the OpenAI sales team. The voice model is also available through OpenAI Presence, the company’s enterprise agent platform. ®
