BERLIN— Buoyed by partisan home fans, host Germany upset Belgium 93-74 on Thursday to reach the women’s FIBA World Cup semifinals, where the United States will play Spain.

Leonie Fiebich scored 17 points and had 10 rebounds to lead Germany to a showdown with France on Saturday. Nyara Sabally also had a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds.

“Everyone stepped up today and we did it from the first second to the very last,” said Alexandra Wilke, who contributed 10 points.

Megan Gustafson scored 16 points and led Spain to an 89-66 win over injury-hit Australia in the last quarterfinal, ending the Americans’ wait to learn their next opponent. The four-time defending champions routed Hungary 108-56 in the first quarterfinal to stretch their winning streak in the tournament to 34 games.

Australia was without forward Ezi Magbegor, who tore her right ACL in the win over Italy, and Alanna Smith, who re-aggravated a leg injury at the start of the tournament.

“It’s really hard to compete against the best in the world when you don’t have all your best players, but I think it was a great experience for all our younger players,” Australia coach Sandy Brondello said.

Brondello is married to Germany coach Olaf Lange and she said she was “really proud of my husband, which is very weird to say,” after what Lange had called the “ best day in German basketball ” as Germany progressed.

“I was a little teary out there, I went and watched the end of the game,” said Brondello, who previously also coached some of the German players.

Germany breaks new ground

Germany had never reached the semifinals before. The players screamed and whooped in celebration.

“I can’t quite believe it yet,” forward Frieda Bühner said. “We’re among the best four teams in the world. I can’t believe it. It’s crazy.”

Germany had lost its opening game by 30 points to Spain, but bounced back with impressive wins over Japan and Mali before routing South Korea in a playoff to reach the quarterfinals.

Egged on by fervent commentary from the announcer, fans cheered, jumped and waved Germany flags at the Berlin Arena to help the home team keep its momentum going.

“It’s always really cool to play in front of such a crowd,” Sabally said. “I couldn’t have wished for more, especially in Germany. It’s really cool to see that there’s so much hype and the whole venue is caught up in it. It’s really, really cool.”

It’s the sixth straight World Cup at which the host has made the final four since China failed to make the semifinals in 2002.

Belgium, the European champion, was one of three teams that advanced through group play without a loss.

Emma Meesseman led Belgium with 29 points and added eight rebounds, but her team was unable to regain the lead after Bühner made it 20-19 toward the end of the first quarter.

Germany did not qualify for the World Cup since the unified country’s only previous appearance as host in 1998. East Germany’s women’s basketball team finished fourth at the 1967 tournament.

Ryan Garcia and Conor Benn hit the scales in Las Vegas today ahead of their highly anticipated WBC welterweight world title fight at the T-Mobile Arena on Saturday night.

Garcia makes the first defence of the WBC welterweight title he won by defeating Mario Barrios earlier this year, while Benn challenges for a world championship for the first time in his professional career.

The weight has been one of the major talking points throughout fight week, with Benn repeatedly admitting that the cut back down to 147lbs – his first in four years – has been extremely difficult.

The Brit has competed as high as middleweight in recent years and said last week that he will immediately move up after this fight, win, lose or draw.

Yesterday, Garcia had publicly questioned whether Benn would make the limit and even sought an exception from the Nevada State Athletic Commission over glove size in the event that his opponent came in heavy, meaning both could still wear 8oz gloves rather than moving up to 10. The request led some to speculate that Garcia himself was struggling with his own cut.

Despite the worries, Benn came in at 146lbs while Garcia – who took to the scales slightly later than his challenger – was 145.5lbs, both men clearing the 147 limit by a notable amount.

Making the weight is not the entire story, however, with hard cuts often showing their effects come fight night, even after rehydration, via a lack of punch resistance or energy down the stretch. The pair will come face to face at the ceremonial weigh-in this evening, where fans will get a better look.

The fight headlines a Zuffa Boxing and Ring Magazine card at the T-Mobile Arena, with Jai Opetaia 199lbs facing Noel Mikaelian in the co-main event. The show will be streamed on Paramount+ in the United States, while viewers in the UK and Ireland can watch on DAZN.

New England Patriots wide receiver A.J. Brown is headed to the injured reserve list and will be out for the next four games, according to multiple reports. Brown suffered a high ankle sprain during the Patriots’ season-opening loss to the defending Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks.

Brown was acquired via trade from the Philadelphia Eagles this past offseason, with the Patriots surrendering a 2028 first-round pick and a 2027 fifth-round pick in exchange for his services. He was expected to serve as Drake Maye’s No. 1 target throughout this season.

Before the injury, which occurred early in the third quarter, Brown had caught three passes for 26 yards on four targets. New England’s passing game fell apart down the stretch after Brown left the game, with Maye throwing three fourth-quarter interceptions as the Patriots blew their lead and eventually lost the Super Bowl rematch.

Now, they’ll be without Brown for at least the next month. Brown will miss games against the Steelers, Jaguars, Bills and Raiders, at minimum.

Zverev is through to All Four Grand Slam Semifinals in 2026

Alexander Zverev is back in the US Open semifinals after defeating Botic van de Zandschulp 6-2, 7-5, 6-1 in straight sets.

The German top seed has now reached the semifinals at all four Grand Slams in 2026, becoming only the second-oldest player in the Open Era to achieve the feat. He has also reached his 13th Grand Slam semifinal and won 51 matches this season.

Zverev has steadily found his best form in New York after a difficult start to the tournament. He is also the only Grand Slam champion left in the men’s draw after Ben Shelton eliminated Carlos Alcaraz.

“I don’t take it for granted at all. I know it can change in a heartbeat in tennis.”

Zverev will face Karen Khachanov in the semifinals. The Russian reached the last four after Alexander Blockx retired while trailing 6-2, 7-5, 3-2. Zverev leads their head-to-head 6-3.

The other semifinal will be an all-American battle between Ben Shelton and Frances Tiafoe, meaning the 2026 US Open men’s champion will be one of these four: Zverev, Khachanov, Shelton or Tiafoe.

The left-hander beat out returning options Matt Zollers and Nick Evers for the job this spring, and he now gets his first true road test against a Kansas defense that just gave up 613 total yards in its own opener. Simmons will lean on a Missouri receiving corps built around Donovan Olugbode in a game the Big 12 moved to a Friday night, prime-time window. Another efficient outing keeps the No. 25 Tigers unbeaten and validates the offseason quarterback overhaul in Columbia.

Kansas is playing its first game at David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium against Missouri since 2005, and it’s Marshall’s job to make sure the revived Border Showdown feels like a coronation. The redshirt sophomore won the starting job out of fall camp and answered with 246 yards and two touchdowns through the air plus 49 rushing yards on just seven carries in a 51-6 rout of LIU. That dual-threat element gives offensive coordinator Andy Kotelnicki another wrinkle against a Missouri front that will be seeing Marshall as a starter for the first time. A repeat performance would give Kansas a signature statement in a game the Big 12 shifted to national primetime.

Fresh off a season-opening connection with Austin Simmons that produced 107 receiving yards and two touchdowns, Olugbode enters as Missouri’s most established target after leading all Tigers freshmen in snaps a year ago with 30 catches for 401 yards. He and new quarterback Simmons have already shown chemistry, and that rapport matters against a Kansas secondary that will be facing a Big 12 opponent’s top receiver for the first time this season. With Cincinnati transfer Caleb Goodie and Ole Miss transfer Cayden Lee also in the mix, Olugbode figures to see plenty of coverage attention. Sustained production from him would keep Missouri’s passing game ahead of the sticks all night.

McMillan barely needed a transition period after arriving from Buffalo, catching six passes for 130 yards and a touchdown in his Jayhawks debut against LIU. The First Team All-MAC selection topped 100 yards receiving in six straight games last season for the Bulls, and he immediately looks like Kansas’s new No. 1 option opposite a Missouri secondary adjusting to a new-look Big 12 slate. His size at 6-foot-1 gives Isaiah Marshall a reliable outlet on early downs and in contested situations. If McMillan keeps producing like he did in week one, Kansas has the vertical threat it needs to make good on its home-field return against the Tigers.

How great college players become great pros, according to a top college coach

Every time I walk the range at a big amateur event or spend time testing with elite college kids, I see the same thing: launch monitor numbers that would make half the guys in the top 50 in the world blush.

Ball speed that jumps off the face. Efficiency numbers through the roof. Perfect wedge gaps.

To the untrained eye, the conclusion is simple: How is this kid not walking directly onto the PGA Tour tomorrow?

It’s never that simple. In fact, raw talent is barely half the battle.

On this week’s episode of “Tour Validated,” I sat down with Arizona State Men’s Golf head coach Matt Thurmond. Thurmond — a 2024 GCAA Hall of Fame inductee who put Washington on the map before taking over the powerhouse at ASU — has shepherded an absurd roster of sticks into professional golf, from Nick Taylor and C.T. Pan to David Puig and Kevin Yu.

We got into the weeds on what actually separates the kids who make it from the ones who burn out, the psychological trap of modern NIL and what it’s really like steering an elite program in an era where everyone expects you to win everything.

Rule No. 1: ‘Just don’t screw them up’

The first thing Thurmond will tell you when you ask how he turns kids into tour players is refreshingly blunt: He doesn’t.

“Coaches that claim they put a guy on the PGA Tour… that doesn’t happen,” Thurmond told me. “If you’ve had a lot of PGA Tour players come through your program, it’s probably because you recruited pretty well and you just didn’t screw them up along the way.”

It sounds simple, but in modern coaching — where endless Trackman data, swing philosophies and sports psychologists compete for airtime — staying out of a player’s way is a superpower. When Thurmond watches a kid transition from college sensation to professional week-in, week-out survivor, he doesn’t look for a single swing model. He looks for life order and identity.

“It’s not what they do; it’s that they know what they do,” Thurmond said. “They know why they have that thing, they know that it works and they don’t get tossed around by all the ideas out there. In golf, there are so many people analyzing you all the time. The ones who make it kind of don’t care that much. They aren’t trying to be that other guy — they’re trying to be themselves.”

Beyond that self-awareness lies a willingness to survive the inevitable. Thurmond pointed out that almost every junior prodigy experiences a rapid, uninterrupted rise. But tour life isn’t a linear climb; it’s an endurance test of “soul-searching slumps.” If a player lets a bad stretch derail their identity, they can vanish for three years. The ones who stick out there fall in love with the grind of working through the dirt.

The modern dilemma: NIL and the trap of getting paid too soon

You can’t talk about college sports in 2026 without talking about NIL and the transfer portal. But while programs across the country are throwing six-figure bags at incoming freshmen, Thurmond takes an old-school stance that feels rare in today’s landscape.

At ASU, money isn’t the recruitment pitch. It’s an outcome of performance.

“You don’t want to be overpaid ever,” Thurmond said. “Think about the psychology of a kid coming onto a college team who gets a $100,000 NIL deal, and then can’t make the starting five because he’s not playing as well as the guys who didn’t get that money. That pressure will destroy you.”

Thurmond shared the story of a recent superstar transfer who specifically asked not to receive NIL money upfront: “I don’t want any money now. I only want money once I get on the team and earn it.”

In an era where entitlement can infect a locker room overnight, keeping kids hungry and focused on shooting scores rather than checking balances is arguably the hardest tightrope a college coach has to walk.

Building the pro sandbox: The Bird and the Spanish pipeline

If you want to understand why ASU players look so composed the second they turn pro, look at where they practice.

At the Thunderbirds Golf Complex (aka “The Bird”) at Papago, Thurmond and co-designer Phil Mickelson created an ecosystem that blurs the line between college and the tour. On any given Tuesday, you’ll find current college players grinding right alongside Jon Rahm, David Puig or Chez Reavie.

There is no hiding behind hype when your bunker game is measured on a daily board against your teammates, or when Rahm is standing on the tee waiting for you to hit.

Thurmond reminisced about Puig’s first day at ASU: fresh off a flight from Spain, running late from class, no warmup, rushing straight to Silverleaf to tee off with Rahm and Pat Perez. Puig topped his opening tee shot about 40 yards down the fairway with Pat blasting music in his cart. He turned around, composed himself and shot 64 with Rahm looking on.

“That’s what life is like,” Thurmond said. “That’s what pro golf is like.”

When your players are conditioned to that kind of environment every day for four years, stepping inside the ropes at a PGA Tour or LIV event doesn’t feel like a foreign planet. It just feels like another Tuesday at the Bird.

Dialing the gear: the True Spec blueprint

You also can’t talk about bridging the gap between college golf and the tour without talking about the gear in their hands.

Back in the day, college programs were married to one equipment OEM. You went to a specific school, you played their clubs out of a box, sent in some specs and made it work. If the head-and-shaft combo didn’t fit your delivery, tough luck — you learned to hit it anyway. Today, that old model is practically obsolete, and Thurmond’s latest move at ASU might be the cleanest blueprint for where college golf equipment is heading.

ASU recently partnered with True Spec Golf, giving the entire roster on-demand access to a tour-level fitting and building house right in their backyard.

“Back when I played in college, you never had the right equipment — you just made it work,” Thurmond said. “Now, there’s no reason these guys shouldn’t be completely dialed. They can check lofts and lies whenever they want, gap their wedges, test driving irons for specific tournament setups, and compare shafts across any brand with zero OEM pressure.”

What makes the partnership smart is how it bridges equipment performance with NIL. Elena Rybakina celebrates making History as New World No. 1

Elena Rybakina is celebrating a historic moment after becoming the new world No. 1. She is also the first player from Kazakhstan to reach the top of the WTA rankings.

The 27-year-old secured the ranking after fighting back to defeat Qinwen Zheng 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 and reach her first US Open semifinal.

Rybakina later took to Instagram to celebrate the achievement; she posted:

“Anything is possible when you believe! Proud to represent Kazakhstan and make history as the country’s first world number 1.”

The milestone adds another chapter to what has already been a remarkable year for Rybakina, who won the Australian Open and is now into her fifth Grand Slam semifinal.

Despite her famously calm appearance on court, Rybakina revealed that becoming No. 1 was far from an emotionless experience.

Asked whether she ever “freaks out inside” despite looking so composed, she said:

“No, of course. A lot of things are going on inside. People who know me well long enough read even little changes in my face. It was a bit of a battle inside myself. A lot of emotions. It was quite negative in the beginning, but I found a way. I found the focus. It got better. But definitely, there’s a lot going on always.”

Now, the quiet rise has reached the very top. Elena Rybakina is the world No. 1.

Aakash Chopra Picks “Slightly Underrated” Star As KKR Captain For IPL 2027

Former India opener Aakash Chopra recently shared his views on who should lead Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in IPL 2027 following Ajinkya Rahane‘s retirement. KKR, who won the IPL title in 2024 under the captaincy of Shreyas Iyer, were led by Rahane in the 2025 and 2026 seasons but failed to qualify for the playoffs in either campaign. As the three-time champions gear up for the new season, they are searching for a new skipper after Rahane recently announced his retirement from all forms of cricket.

According to Chopra, KKR should appoint batter Rinku Singh as their next captain. Notably, Rinku has been associated with the franchise since 2018 and has produced several match-winning performances for the team. He recently led Meerut Mavericks to the UP T20 League title, further strengthening his credentials for the leadership role.

“Rinku Singh has captaincy experience. He is slightly underrated, but he is the kind of character you need in a captain. He takes everyone along with him. He is unassuming. He is a match-winner, a performer and a contributor. If you look at all these qualities and then look at his performance as captain in UP T20, you will find that his captaincy does not affect his performance,” Chopra said on his YouTube channel.

“He puts the team ahead of himself. That’s another quality he possesses. He is also someone you can put your arm around, talk to, explain things to and have a conversation with. In my humble opinion, I feel KKR should make Rinku Singh their captain,” he added.

Earlier, former India batter Suresh Raina also backed Rinku as KKR’s next captain, stating that the star batter has already proven his leadership abilities.

“Kaabil e tareef kaptaani Rinku Singh ki. Chautha season hai, chauthe final khel rahe hai (Meerut Mavericks). KKR kaptaan dhoond rahi hai, lekin mujhe lagta hai kaptaan mil gaya hai KKR ko (Rinku’s captaincy has been worthy of praise. Fourth season, fourth final for Meerut Mavericks. KKR are looking for a captain, but I think they may have found him),” Raina said, speaking during the final.

“Thoda nivesh kijiye Rinku Singh pe, thode matches dijiye (They should invest in Rinku Singh, give him a few matches). You never know,” Raina added.

NEW DELHI: Former India cricketer Ajinkya Rahane believes Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s time will come, but feels India should currently stick with the top-three combination that delivered the 2026 T20 World Cup title, backing Sanju Samson to reclaim his place alongside Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan for the upcoming T20I series against Afghanistan.Samson, who was named Player of the Tournament during India’s triumphant T20 World Cup campaign, was dropped after a string of low scores on the tour of England. Sooryavanshi was subsequently handed his international debut in Manchester and also opened during the T20Is against Zimbabwe.With Samson now recalled for the three-match home series against Afghanistan, beginning at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Sunday, Rahane believes the experienced batter should return to the top order.“I feel the top three should be the same that played in the World Cup. Samson has done well, but he got dropped after two or three bad innings. I want him to get another chance. Abhishek and Ishan also did well for us,” Rahane said in a video on his YouTube channel on Friday.“Vaibhav will get his opportunities, and his time will come. But for now, I feel the top three should be Samson, Abhishek, and Ishan, who were our contributors in the World Cup,” he added.

‘He should just play his game’

Rahane welcomed Samson’s return while pointing to the batter’s impact during India’s World Cup-winning campaign.“I am happy to see Sanju Samson back in the team. He was the ‘Man of the Series’ in the World Cup. It has been up and down, and things were happening to him that were not in his control. But he is a match-winner, and his return strengthens the team,” Rahane said.For Sooryavanshi, Rahane’s message was one of patience and freedom. The 15-year-old has made a rapid rise through domestic and franchise cricket, but the former India batter believes the teenager should not overthink his early international career.“I think he should just play his game right now. He should back the game that led him to come into the Indian team. It is a very early stage for him in his career and in international cricket,” Rahane said.“As of now, there is no need for him to think a lot, and he should be set free. His game will eventually change after two or three years, as much as he keeps playing. It will be important for him to maintain balance. Apart from cricket skills, it is important to stay balanced off the field. That will be a challenge for him.”

Sooryavanshi’s record-breaking rise

Sooryavanshi has already provided plenty of evidence of his ability. During the Duleep Trophy, he became the youngest player to score a half-century in the competition, reaching the landmark at 15 years and 175 days.He made 92 off 81 balls for East Zone, reaching his fifty from just 42 deliveries and breaking a 57-year-old record previously held by Laxman Singh, who was 16 years and 23 days old when he scored his Duleep Trophy fifty in 1969.Rahane believes the teenager’s next challenge is not proving his talent but maintaining the mental stability needed to handle his rapid rise.“If we talk about cricket skills, we saw how well he batted in the IPL and scored consistently. He scored for India A and also made runs for East Zone in the Duleep Trophy,” Rahane said.“He has shown consistency. The only thing for him will be to stay mentally balanced and stable so that he can continue operating the way he does. Yes, he will have to make some tweaks in his game, but there is time for that,” he concluded.
