Emergency services have attended a “very serious collision” on the A14

A busy stretch of the A14 has been partially closed in Cambridgeshire after a “very serious collision”. Emergency services were called to the A14 between J31 (Girton Interchange) and J33 (Milton) at approximately 1.40pm on Saturday (August 12).

National Highways said Cambridgeshire Police are leading the response to the incident, which has been described as a “very serious collision”. The agency said a police investigation is ongoing and is “likely to take several hours” so the closure on the eastbound carriageway “will be protracted”.

East of England Ambulance Service also attended the incident. Both emergency services have been contacted for further information.

A spokesperson for National Highways said: “National Highways Traffic Officers are attending to implement the closure and once this is completed they’ll work on releasing road users caught within the closure.

“There is currently no official emergency diversion route for this section of the A14. Traffic is being diverted off at the Girton Interchange to use either the M11 southbound or the A1302 towards Cambridge. Road users will need to follow local routes through Cambridge to reach and re-join the A14 eastbound. Heavy congestion is expected on this routes.

“If this closure impacts on your planned route, please allow extra journey time. Plan ahead, you may wish to re-route or even delay your journey.”

A construction worker in Tennessee says he came face-to-face with Jesus when he nearly died and is now sharing exactly what he looked like. 

Mike McKinsey was a superintendent in 2004 when he suffered a ruptured appendix that nearly killed him and required emergency surgery due to the severe infection.

As his life hung in the balance, McKinsey claimed that Jesus walked into the operating room in physical form and took his hand, transporting the dying man to a hill overlooking what he perceived as heaven.

Unlike other depictions across Christianity, McKinsey said he vividly remembered Jesus having darker skin, green or blue-green eyes and shoulder-length, wavy brown hair.

He also described Jesus with a short beard and wearing a white robe when he entered the hospital room. According to McKinsey, Christ held out his hand and said: ‘I want to answer your prayer.’

McKinsey told the BearFruitWithChrist podcast: ‘I would say it was just love, and the only way I’ve ever described it is when his eyes looked in mine, he looked into my soul. As soon as our eyes met, he knew me. He was the brother I never had, the perfect father. It was all love.’

However, McKinsey’s experience did not end with his brief near-death experience (NDE) during surgery. He claimed Jesus would appear again and spend three hours talking to him as he developed pneumonia while recovering in the hospital.

During this encounter, the construction worker-turned-author said he received a calling from heaven to spread the teachings of Jesus on Earth.

‘I feel this holy presence enter the room, and it was like the NDE started all over again. I just could tell he pulled up a chair and he sat down at the end of my bed and I just knew he was there but I couldn’t see him,’ McKinsey revealed. 

‘He says, “I had to get you flat on your back away from all the distractions so you could hear me… I’m calling you out to do more for my kingdom… Millions are going to hear about our story.”‘

In multiple interviews, McKinsey has stated that he believed the presence of Jesus sat by his bedside as nurses came to check on him during his bout with pneumonia – a spirit only he was able to feel.

He compared the experience to a friend sitting with a sick friend, talking and consoling him, but also giving McKinsey a mission to spread the message of Christianity.

McKinsey claimed that he pushed back when the spirit of Jesus told him to become a Christian messenger, saying that ‘I’m not Billy Graham. I can’t do that.’ 

‘He did chuckle when I said I’m not Billy Graham. I’ve never heard him laugh, but that was probably the closest that I’ve come to that. But yeah, he’s a friend,’ he explained on the Peaceful Presence Podcast on July 23.

McKinsey added that his experience should not be considered uncommon, believing that the crucifixion of Jesus – the biblical act where he died for the sins of humanity – gave people the ‘authority’ to speak directly with God.

‘We have direct access to the throne. I think of him as a friend now,’ said McKinsey, who is now a published author who shares his insights from the near-death experience and conversation with Jesus.

The author also claimed Jesus had warned him that those who spread the word of God would also face growing ‘attacks from the enemy.’

McKinsey explained that he believed this warning meant the devil would stir up more trouble in a Christian believer’s life, creating more doubts, harsh criticism, fear and personal setbacks that try to shut them down.

After spending 12 days in the hospital recovering from the surgery and pneumonia, McKinsey said those ‘attacks’ from Satan began to impact his life, even before he began writing about his NDE.

‘I lost my parents within a couple of years after the NDE, and I lost both of them within six months of each other, and I just knew,’ he revealed.

‘I could feel God’s presence and Jesus holding me up, the Holy Spirit holding me up, and I just kept thinking, “wow, this is one of those attacks.”‘

However, McKinsey said his experience with Jesus pushed him to not view these tragedies as a personal attack against him specifically.

He came to see hard losses as part of a fallen world that hurts many people at once, not as Satan singling him out for spreading the message of Jesus, and he tried to keep his focus on God holding him through it. 

After 14 years living in his rural New York home, Jason Hurdle thought he knew every inch of his property.

So he was left stunned to discover a previously hidden crawlspace while cleaning his Waterloo garage back in July.

However, his wonder only increased after he plucked a set of files marked ‘secret’ from inside the dusty compartment.

The 300-page tranche contained appeared to contain first-hand accounts from World War II American Prisoners of War.

Hurdle, 74, took the documents to a local library which referred them to the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) who came to collect them.

It was subsequently confirmed that not only were the accounts genuine, but they were once classified. 

‘I’m in podunk little Waterloo, New York, and this went all the way to the National Archives. We’re kind of in shock here,’ Hurdle told the Washington Post. 

Hurdle explained his home has been in his wife’s family for generations, but was stumped as to how the files ended up in the property.

He added that a former neighbor had memorabilia from an ancestor, but was still unsure if this explains the find.

The documents describe in horrifying detail the events prisoners of war endured. 

The POWs were told to write down their experiences to gather intelligence when they arrived at Camp Lucky Strike in Normandy. 

Many documents from this camp were then used as evidence of war crimes in military tribunals. 

Historians had no knowledge of the lost accounts. The National Archives told the Post that they did not have the files on a list of missing documents. 

‘The discovery of these government records is important and meaningful to ensure preservation and public access to our country’s history,’ NARA spokeswoman Grace McCaffrey told the publication.  

One account was from a man named Julian Candelaria, who was held captive in a work camp for months, recalling that he witnessed ’60 men in boxcars,’ with ‘no food no water, no sanitary facilities, crowded, exposed to bombing. Walked 3 days + nights with little food, no medical.’

The Washington Post found Candelaria’s obituary, which read: ‘After returning home he refused to discuss the events that occurred during his imprisonment at [the] hands of his captors, the Germans.’ 

Another POW named Henry Daly wrote that the conditions were ‘a very sad example of what the US soldier was like.’

Hurdle told the Washington Post that he was ‘in shock’ that he discovered the precious documents

‘We ran for cover, but two of my companions [whose] names I do not [recall] were killed by the bombs,’ he added. 

His great-grandson, Michael Yanes, told the Post that Daly did not talk about his time in the war with his family, but he often slept in a park because he struggled to stay in his house. 

‘Seeing these words written is quite heavy. This is all new to us. The emotions. I can’t even describe,’ Yanes said. 

The documents have been placed with similar accounts in the National Archives and will be digitized. 

NARA also confirmed over the summer that they discovered 145 US Navy records from an engineer who participated in several Apollo missions, including blueprints and sound recordings. 

A pardon signed by President Franklin Pierce and a Congressional Tally Sheet of a secret House of Representatives vote were also recovered at auction houses.

A letter to then-Secretary of War Jefferson Davis from Army 1st Lt JEB Stuart has been recovered as well and will be digitized. 

The Daily Mail reached out to NARA for comment.

Owners may need to react straight away and not wait for it to get better

Dog owners across the UK have been urged to keep an eye out for signs and symptoms of an issue that is “quite common in dogs during the spring, summer and early autumn”.

According to the British veterinary charity PDSA, People’s Dispensary for Sick Animals, insect bites are very common. If bitten or stung, it will likely appear around their face or on their paws.

Thankfully, “most stings and bites can be managed at home as long as the signs are mild”. However, “some cases are more serious,” and if your dog is showing any signs of an allergic reaction, or they have been stung several times, the charity warns owners to “contact your vet immediately”.

What kind of insect could bite my dog?

While your dog is outside, they’ll come across all sorts of insects that have the potential to sting and/or bite them, including:

• Bees – bee stings can be very painful, and you may see the stinger left behind.
• Wasps – wasp stings can also be very painful, they can sting multiple times but don’t leave their stinger behind.
• Ticks – ticks that are removed quickly and carefully are unlikely to cause any ongoing problems.
• Mosquitos – mosquito bites don’t often cause serious problems in dogs – you may not even notice that they have been bitten.
• Ants – ant bites can sometimes cause small red lumps to appear, but don’t often cause serious problems.
• Flies – similar to other bites, fly bites don’t often cause serious problems in dogs. They might appear as red lumps or scabs, and if they are large, they may require saltwater cleaning.

How to tell if my dog has been stung?

Insect stings and bites can be extremely painful. They can occur anywhere on the body, but are most commonly seen on the face and paws.

If your dog is stung by a bee, the stinger is usually left behind in the skin. Wasp stings don’t leave a stinger, and wasps may sting more than once.

Symptoms of a mild reaction:

• Mild swelling in the affected area
• Licking, biting or pawing the area
• Whining and crying
• Limping or holding up a paw
• Drooling

Just like in humans, some dogs can be allergic to insect bites and stings. Allergic reaction symptoms often include:

• Hives or a severe rash
• Rapid swelling around the affected area
• Rapid breathing or difficulty breathing
• Collapse
• Vomiting and diarrhoea

The charity warns: “Contact a vet immediately if your dog is showing any signs of an allergic reaction, has a swelling around their face, neck or throat, or if they’ve been stung several times.”

What should I do if my dog has been stung?

If your dog shows any of the signs of an allergic reaction, take them to a vet as soon as possible. If the reaction appears mild, you can follow the steps below:

• Check the area. If you can see a stinger, gently remove it by sliding the edge of a credit card under the venom sac (the small yellow blob) and scraping it out. Don’t use tweezers or your fingers, as squeezing it can push more venom into your dog.
• Put a cold, damp cloth on the area to calm the skin and reduce swelling. You can also use an ice pack wrapped in a tea towel, as long as your dog will tolerate it.
• Antihistamines may help reduce swelling, but check with your vet before giving your dog any medicine. They can tell you whether it’s suitable and make sure you use the correct medication and dose.
• Keep a close eye out for any signs of an allergic reaction (listed above). If you notice any, contact your vet immediately.
• Home remedies like vinegar for wasp stings, or a paste of bicarbonate of soda and water for bee stings, won’t usually do any harm. However, they may not ease symptoms as much as people expect.

What should I do if my dog has an allergic reaction or is stung by an insect?

1. Check for signs of a severe allergic reaction:

• Rapid swelling – often of the lips, eyes, ears and face
• Vomiting or diarrhoea
• Breathing difficulties – If your pet has stopped breathing, read the charity’s CPR advice
• Collapse/ fainting

Other signs of a less severe allergic reaction include:

• Skin rash/ bumps
• Mild swelling elsewhere on the body
• Drooling
• Limping if the legs or feet are affected

2. Vets

Go to the vet immediately if your pet is struggling to breathe or if swelling in the face, neck or throat is coming on quickly. If you can, call the practice on your way to let them know you’re coming.

It is with the greatest sadness and broken hearts that Callum’s family announce his passing on Friday 21st August 2026, at his home in Gwaun Cae Gurwen. A cherished son, brother, family member, companion and friend – a funny, quick witted practical joker who loved to make people laugh. He was completely unforgettable. An amazing son to Hugh and Pam, a much-loved brother to Layla, Kelly, Paula and Michelle, and a devoted companion to his beloved dog, Zac. MORNING

I’d start the day with breakfast and a coffee in one of Longridge’s independent cafés. Binny & the Bean, The Old Station Café and Emmerson’s Café are all favourites of mine, and each has its own atmosphere. Whether you’re after a full breakfast or just a flat white before a day of exploring, you’ll find somewhere that suits.

After that, I’d spend some time browsing the independent shops that make Longridge so special. The main street, Berry Lane, is packed with local businesses. One of my first stops would be The Next Chapter, our lovely independent bookshop in a converted church.

You’ll also find Heritage Interiors for home inspiration, Cloud 9 for gifts and fashion, Berry Antiques for hidden treasures and G. Rowles Butchers for some of the area’s finest local produce. Make sure you pop into The Bloom Room to say hi too.

If you have a little more time, it’s worth taking the short drive out to Little Town Farm Shop. As well as farm shop, it has a popular tearoom serving homemade food and a plant centre where you can pick up everything from seasonal bedding plants to gifts for the garden.

AFTERNOON

For lunch, I’d head back into town and settle in at Longridge Canteen or one of our welcoming pubs. Longridge has a great food scene for a town of its size, and there’s something for every occasion, whether you want a quick bite or a leisurely lunch.

The afternoon is perfect for seeing a little more of the area. We’re incredibly lucky to be surrounded by beautiful countryside, and one place I’d always recommend is a walk, or cycle, around Longridge Fell. If you’re lucky, on a very clear day, you can see out to the Welsh mountains and the Isle of Man from the top. Nearby Beacon Fell Country Park is another favourite, with woodland trails, open moorland and plenty of opportunities to spot local wildlife. Both are only a short distance from the town.

Or, if you’re anything like me, you might simply spend the afternoon dipping in and out of the shops, stopping for another coffee and enjoying the friendly atmosphere that makes Longridge such a lovely place to live.

EVENING

As evening arrives, Longridge has a really sociable feel. For dinner, one of my top recommendations would be Hilltop Brasserie , which serves excellent food in a relaxed setting and is always a great choice for a special meal. If you’re after a traditional country pub atmosphere, the Derby Arms is another excellent option just a few minutes outside Longridge.

Afterwards, I’d head to Fullaloves Wines for a glass of wine and a catch-up with friends. It’s one of those places that always feels welcoming and has become a real part of the town’s social scene.

If cocktails are more your thing, Mrs Sippy is a must-visit. It opened in 2024 and has quickly built a reputation for its handcrafted cocktails, weekend events and lively atmosphere.

My personal favourite is a Hugo Spritz, especially on a sunny evening when you can sit on the little terrace outside.

SENSE OF PLACE

A TOWN BUILT ON STONE

Longridge’s story is closely tied to sandstone quarrying. The town’s distinctive golden stone was quarried locally and used in many notable buildings across Lancashire, leaving a lasting legacy that can still be seen throughout the townscape today.

A HILLTOP WITH A VIEW

The town takes its name from its elevated position on a long ridge overlooking the Ribble Valley. From many points around Longridge, visitors can enjoy sweeping views across the surrounding countryside, making it one of Lancashire’s most scenic market towns.

HOME TO A WORLD FIRST

One of Longridge’s most remarkable historic landmarks is Club Row. Built between 1774 and 1804 for local mill workers, it is believed to be the oldest surviving row of building society homes anywhere in the world, making it a site of international significance.

FROM RAILWAY TO COMMUNITY HUB

Longridge Railway Station opened in 1840, connecting the town with Preston and neighbouring villages for more than a century. After closing in the 1960s, the station building was lovingly restored and today serves as a thriving community hub, home to the Longridge Heritage Centre, meeting spaces and a popular café..

MAKE A WEEKEND OF IT

If you’re tempted to stay longer than a day, I’d recommend Longridge House, a stylish, newly renovated country house-style hotel just a few minutes from the town centre. It’s set in beautiful grounds and is a great base for exploring the area. The restaurant is well worth a visit too, and if the sun’s out, you’ll often find locals popping in for a drink and making the most of the gardens.

This much-loved community celebration takes place in the town each June to mark the start of summer. It features a colourful parade, live entertainment, family activities and a fantastic atmosphere attracting visitors from across the county who to come to experience Longridge’s strong community spirit.

GOOSNARGH & LONGRIDGE AGRICULTURAL SHOW

Typically held in July, the Longridge Agricultural Show is another highlight of the local calendar, celebrating the area’s rich farming heritage and rural traditions. The event brings together livestock competitions, local food and drink producers, trade exhibitors and a range of family-friendly entertainment.

You finish a lecture, a meeting, a conversation with someone you care about. And what do you do? You reach for your phone. You stick in your earbuds. You fire up a podcast, a playlist or whatever algorithmic feed is currently consuming your life.

It feels productive. It feels like filling empty time.

But here’s what may be happening: you have interrupted your brain mid-sentence.

When you learn something new, whether it is a colleague’s name or the material covered in a morning lecture, your brain does not simply file it away neatly. The memory is fragile at first, more like wet cement than carved stone. In the minutes and hours following new learning, the brain works to strengthen what it has taken in. This is known as memory consolidation, the process through which newly formed memories become more stable.

Research suggests that quiet rest can help this process. Two recent meta-analyses, drawing on dozens of studies, found that people generally retained more information when learning was followed by several minutes of quiet rest rather than an absorbing task. One of the reviews found that the effect varied considerably between groups and was weaker in healthy younger adults. However, the overall advantage has been detected as long as seven days after learning.

One leading explanation is that quiet rest gives the brain fewer competing demands and more opportunity to reactivate a new experience, like an internal highlight reel reinforcing what has just been learned. Researchers have found that increased coordination between the hippocampus and areas of the cortex during post-learning rest is associated with better later memory.

The precise source of interference remains uncertain. One experiment found that engaging in a task after learning was more detrimental than resting, but that the task’s attentional demands did not explain the difference.

Sleep isn’t the whole story

Decades of research have established that sleep supports memory consolidation. But some researchers argue that sleep may form part of a broader process rather than acting as an entirely unique memory state.

The opportunistic consolidation hypothesis proposes that the brain takes advantage of periods with little new information or interference to stabilise what it has recently learned. These periods can include overnight sleep, shorter bouts of sleep and quiet wakeful rest.

In one experiment, participants completed memory tasks and then spent 30 minutes sleeping, resting with their eyes closed or performing a distracting task. Sleep and quiet rest produced similar memory benefits over this short interval, while both were more beneficial than the distracting task.

The twist: doing nothing is harder than it sounds

Achieving genuine quiet rest can be difficult. The memory-consolidation window may be disrupted by internal mental activity as well as external stimulation.

In one series of experiments, participants who spent the rest period recalling past experiences or imagining future events retained less of the newly learned material than those who rested without being prompted to think autobiographically. Participants who reported the most vivid thoughts also tended to show greater disruption.

Resting on the sofa, then, may work best when the mind settles too.

A recent study of adults without clinical anxiety adds a further complication. Moderate anxiety during quiet rest was associated with poorer memory consolidation, while lower and higher anxiety levels left new memories relatively intact. The study found only a modest overall advantage for rest and no significant difference in its main measure of recognition sensitivity, so the anxiety finding needs further investigation.

Even so, it raises the possibility that ordinary background worry can interfere with consolidation by pulling the brain into a vigilant state when it would otherwise be processing what it has just learned.

Exam pressure and a full inbox may therefore make effective rest harder to achieve.

A note of caution

This is not settled science. Translating laboratory findings into classrooms, offices and other everyday settings is difficult, and individual studies have sometimes failed to reproduce the expected benefit. The size of the effect also varies with age, the type of memory being tested and the characteristics of the participants.

A recent classroom study involving children aged ten to 12 found better word retention after ten minutes of quiet rest, although the benefit appeared only when the rest condition came first. Earlier research involving 13- and 14-year-olds found that rest supported memory over seven days, but the benefit was concentrated among children whose initial recall was lower.

We still do not know how reliably this can be applied in a school, during workplace training or in a care home. Nor do we know why some people benefit more than others.

What this means for real life

Quiet rest does not appear to require complete silence, closed eyes or a particular body position. A 2025 meta-analysis found that these factors did not significantly alter the average effect, although the evidence cannot yet tell us what the ideal real-world routine would look like.

For now, the practical implication is modest: after learning something you want to remember, consider leaving a brief gap before introducing more information.

It might mean waiting a few minutes after a lecture before reaching for your phone. It could mean travelling home after an important conversation without immediately putting on a podcast. It might involve spending the space between two tasks looking out of a window.

These are the moments we increasingly fill with new input. If the emerging evidence is right, leaving some of them empty may give the brain a better chance to hold on to what just happened.

Mootop Dairy, run by members of the Fitton family, is a small, 41-cow dairy farm located just off Wingates in North Westhoughton.

Usually, customers can’t get up close to the cows, as access to the farm proper is barred by metal gates.

But for two days, which got underway today, Mootop is fully open, meaning anyone can come in to get a peek behind the curtain.

“We wanted to do an open day as soon as we opened,” said farmer Robert Fitton, “but business was so good we didn’t need to.

“So we’ve decided to do it now in honour of James.”

James Egerton is a seven-year-old Westhoughton boy who loves football, playing outside, and milkshakes.

But on New Year’s Eve 2025, James was diagnosed with Metastatic Neuroblastoma, a form of brain cancer.

“Our world fell apart as a family,” said Chris Egerton, James’s father.

“We took him straight to Manchester Children’s Hospital where he started chemotherapy, but there were complications that led to a bleed on his brain.”

Chemotherapy is a notoriously taxing process, leaving patients tired, weak, and bedridden.

As a method of strengthening James back up after the difficult treatment, Chris would bring him milkshakes every morning.

“He’s happy because he gets a milkshake,” said Chris, “but it’s also good nutrition for him.”

One day, about six weeks ago, Chris went to Mootop Dairy with his parents for a visit, which is when the Fitton family first met him.

It was this meeting that convinced Robert and the rest of the Fitton family to do something good for the Egertons.

“It was one of those moments where I really realised how lucky we were as a family that we’ve never had to go through anything like that,” said Robert.

“I went back and hugged my kids that night.”

With the idea of doing an open day still in his head, Robert then had the idea of combining the two, and hosting the open day in honour of James and his family.

He contacted Chris and asked him who he’d like them to donate the money to, and Chris suggested the Manchester Children’s Hospital, who’ve been so good to the Egerton family over the last nine months.

“When Robert called us to let us know what they were doing, we thought it was unbelievable.

“This is a man who just met us once at the farm, and we started chatting.

“It’s very overwhelming – for him to do this for us without us asking him or anything is just fantastic. They didn’t have to do anything.”

For every litre of milk sold over the course of the weekend, 50p will be donated to Manchester Children’s Hospital.

There is also a raffle game involving guessing the number of balloons in a tractor, proceeds from which will also go to the hospital.

The open day gives customers the chance to tour the farm, meet the team, the cows, and the other animals.

There are also calves and lambs present for families to see.

Of course, it’s also an excellent excuse to enjoy more of their delicious milk.

The open day will continue into Sunday (September 13) at Mootop Farm, located just off Wingates Lane.
