Megan Wright visited her GP about a knee injury. What she was told changed her life

A radiographer discovered she had leukaemia after brushing off her unexplained bruises as pole dancing injuries. Megan Wright, 28, lived a normal, active life until earlier this year when she noticed large bruises on her arms which took up to a month to disappear.

Megan, from Dundee, Scotland, visited her GP for an ongoing knee injury in February and casually mentioned the bruising as well as tiredness she thought might be a sign of anaemia. Her GP arranged a blood test and hours later she was told she had either lymphoma or leukaemia.

Megan underwent a bone marrow biopsy which confirmed acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL). Megan said: “It was just a whirlwind.

“I’d gone from just going to the GP for something completely different to being diagnosed with leukaemia within days. I’ve still got quite a lot of treatment to go, but I’m in remission, which is obviously really good.

“I felt fit and healthy. I was doing pole fitness, going out with my friends and just living my normal life. Then suddenly I was being told I had leukaemia. You just don’t expect it to happen to you.”

Megan, who is sharing her story during Blood Cancer Awareness Month, initially put her tiredness due to slightly increased working hours. After her blood test at the GP she had a 20-minute long nose bleed – another sign of ALL.

Following her hospital admission, a consultant said she needed further tests to determine if she had lymphoma – cancer in the lymphatic system – or leukaemia – cancer in the blood and bone marrow. Three days later she was being diagnosed with leukaemia.

She said: “It was very hard to process because it all happened so quickly. They couldn’t delay treatment, so they had to start me on chemotherapy straight away.”

Since her diagnosis in February, Megan has undergone two five-week cycles of chemotherapy. A bone marrow biopsy following her second cycle showed no evidence of leukaemia, meaning Megan is currently in remission and does not need a stem cell transplant.

She still has further chemotherapy ahead, including additional rounds of treatment designed to reduce the risk of the disease returning. At 28, she feels caught between the services aimed at teenagers and young adults and the predominantly older patients she sees on the haematology ward.

She said: “I feel like I’m in a weird age bracket. I’m too old for some of the teenage cancer support, but I’m also one of the youngest people on the haematology ward.”

Leukaemia Care has helped Megan navigate some of those gaps. For Megan, the emotional impact of her diagnosis has been just as significant as the physical treatment.

Her job means she understands cancer from a professional perspective, but experiencing it herself has been very different. She is now starting to get back to the life she enjoyed before her diagnosis. She has returned to her pole fitness studio for the first time since her diagnosis.

And she has just got engaged – after several months dominated by hospital appointments and chemotherapy. She said: “I’d love to get back to pole fitness properly and get back to work.

“I’m just very tired at the moment, so I can’t do the same amount as I used to. But hopefully once all this is over, I’ll get back to it.”

Now Megan is raising awareness of the symptoms of leukaemia as it was only because she mentioned the changes during an appointment for something completely unrelated that a blood test was carried out.

She added: “I probably wouldn’t have thought anything of it if people at work hadn’t said I should mention it while at the GP. But I’m really glad I did.”

Colin Dyer, chief executive of Leukaemia Care, said: “It is so important to recognise changes in your health, even when you’re young, active and otherwise feel well – just like Megan did.

“Her symptoms could easily have been attributed to her lifestyle or other everyday explanations, but mentioning them to her GP led to further investigation and, ultimately, her diagnosis.”

Black Sabbath frontman Ozzy died aged 76 in July last year, just over two weeks after his Back To The Beginning farewell concert, where he was reunited with his bandmates in his home city of Birmingham for what was the final time.

Just weeks later, Ozzy, known as the ‘Prince of Darkness’, died of a reported heart attack on July 22 after suffering a string of health issues over the years, including multiple surgeries following a fall in February 2019 and being diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease.

Wife Sharon previously opened up about the last few days of his life at their family’s mansion in Buckinghamshire. During an appearance on Piers Morgan Uncensored in December, Sharon shared: “He had told me that he was ­having dreams in the last week of his life. He was seeing people that he never knew.

“I said, ‘Well, what kind of ­people?’ He goes, ‘All different people. And I just keep walking and walking, and I’m seeing all these different people every night, and I go back there and I’m looking at these people, and they’re looking at me, and nobody’s talking’. And he knew. He was ready.”

Now, appearing on Paul C Brunson’s podcast, We Need to Talk, Kelly has shared the moving conversation she had with her father Ozzy just three days before his passing, where he reassured her of his unconditional love, and how Sharon pulled off Ozzy’s legendary final farewell performance for his fans despite doctors’ warning him he would die if he performed.

“He sat me down, this was about three days before he died, he sat me down and said, ‘Tots, I need you to know something… No matter what happens in this life, you can live the rest of your life knowing that there was one man on this planet that truly loved you, that truly loved you for every single thing you are. And that man is me,’” Kelly emotionally recalled.

“And I started to cry, saying ‘please don’t talk like this’ because he said ‘you know, I’m not going to be here forever and I know you struggle with people and believing you are loved. But I love you more than anyone.’ Three days later, he was gone.”

Speaking about Ozzy’s death, she continued: “My mum allowed him to die the happiest you’ve ever seen him. All he wanted before leaving this planet was one last show one more time. To be able to let his fans know how grateful he was for the life they allowed him to have and how much he loved them and to say goodbye. And my mum worked her arse off to make that happen.

“It was one of the most incredible moments in music history. It outlives Woodstock because it was all the people that got to be who they are because of him come pay tribute to him. And he got to say goodbye, and he got to say thank you. That’s all he wanted to do. And then he let go. Two weeks after. They told him, ‘If you do this show, you’ll die.’ And he chose to do it anyway, because it meant more to him than anything.

“He was suffering so much. His day-to-day life was insufferable, nobody should have to live like that. To be in so much pain and be unable to walk, and your mind is there, but your body just doesn’t work.”

Meanwhile, a Pentagon watchdog report said the US spent an estimated $22.3bn on munitions during the first four months of its war with Iran, exposing weaknesses in the US defence industrial base.

Egypt’s president Abdel Fattah al-Sisi is set to roll out the red carpet for Saudi crown prince Mohammed bin Salman on Tuesday, the Egyptian presidency said.

The meeting comes against the backdrop of intensified fighting between Iranian-backed Houthi rebels and Yemen’s Saudi-backed government.

The two leaders will hold a bilateral meeting to discuss the Houthi offensive and developments in Iran.

The Houthi rebels’ weeklong offensive has culminated in the capture of Yemen’s Red Sea coast, cementing their hold on the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, through which Saudi oil transits.

Earlier, Cairo rejected a proposal from the Houthis for direct talks to coordinate maritime traffic through the waterway and the Red Sea, according to Qatari media outlet Al-Araby Al-Jadeed.

US imposes fresh sanctions on Russia’s VTB Bank over alleged Iran ties

The United States imposed new sanctions on Russia’s VTB Bank on Monday, accusing the lender of helping Iran evade Western sanctions ⁠and warning that foreign institutions that continue doing business with Russia’s second-largest bank could face additional penalties.

Already cut off from the dollar system over Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, VTB now faces Iran-related sanctions that Treasury officials said could expose foreign banks and businesses that continue to deal with it to additional penalties.

Treasury said VTB had opened offices in Iran, established banking relationships with sanctioned Iranian ⁠lenders and helped build financial channels designed to facilitate trade ​and financial ⁠coordination between Moscow and Tehran.

The action, taken under an executive order aimed at increasing pressure on the Iranian economy, adds to US sanctions already in place against VTB Bank that were ⁠imposed in February 2022.

The Treasury said in a ​statement that ⁠state-controlled VTB was now “among the most comprehensively sanctioned ‌financial institutions in the world.” The Iran-related penalties would increase the risk of secondary sanctions against foreign institutions that continue to do business with VTB, the Treasury added.

“Under Operation Economic Outcast, Treasury will continue to target and disrupt ‌those who provide material, technological, or financial support that allows the ‌Iranian regime to sustain its terrorist enterprise,” Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said in the statement.

“Treasury will not tolerate any support to the regime and will continue to identify, expose, and isolate Iran’s enablers,” it quoted him as saying.

Doctors Without Borders (MSF) said Israeli forces launched a strike on a clearly identified aid convoy in besieged Gaza, injuring at least one humanitarian worker on Monday.

US spent $22.3bn on munitions in first four months of Iran war, watchdog finds

The US spent an estimated $22.3bn on munitions during the first four months of its war with Iran, according to a Pentagon watchdog report.

The Defense Department’s inspector general estimated that the war had cost the US military $33.4bn by 29 June, including $22.3bn in expended munitions, $3.7bn in destroyed or lost equipment and $7.4bn in additional costs, largely covering day-to-day military operations.

The estimate does not include the cost of repairing US military bases damaged by Iranian counterattacks, the report said. Facilities in Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Oman and Jordan were damaged.

The scale of weapons use has exposed weaknesses in the US defence industrial base, with the inspector general citing the Pentagon’s acquisition office as saying that the expended munitions had “resulted in strategic inventory shortfalls and revealed industrial base bottlenecks for munitions resupply”.

The Pentagon is now working to speed up procurement and production, while stockpiling critical materials, components and selected munitions to ensure it can respond more quickly to future conflicts, the report said.

The US also suffered significant equipment losses during the conflict. Up to 30 MQ-9 Reaper drones were destroyed, along with four F-15E fighter jets and several other aircraft, according to the report.

Several aircraft and helicopters were also destroyed during a US search-and-rescue operation in early April to recover an Air Force officer stranded deep inside Iran.

Separately, the State Department incurred $113m in costs by early June, including the evacuation of American diplomats and US citizens from the region.

Iranian attacks also caused an estimated $184m in damage to US diplomatic facilities in Iraq, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and the UAE, the report said.

The figures cover the period through 29 June. In late July, Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth told Congress that the war had cost the US about $37.5bn.

The notorious booze ban is set to be lifted at Scotland’s national stadium meaning supporters heading to upcoming games with be able to purchase pints.

Tartan Army fans will be allowed to enjoy a pint while attending matches at Hampden Park going forward. A booze ban is normally in place in all Scottish football grounds but successful trial alcohol sales mean the notorious ban will be lifted at the national stadium.

Supporters will be able to toast their side when the trial continues at fixtures against Switzerland on September 29 and Slovenia next month. Booze has been banned at Scottish grounds – with the exception of hospitality suites – since the infamous 1980 Scottish Cup final between Celtic and Rangers.

Hampden Park was initially allowed to serve alcohol, from pop-up hospitality bars in the stadium concourse, during games against Japan and Curaçao earlier this year.

The board then granted four occasional licences to cover two areas of the stadium concourse before the upcoming Nations League fixtures.

Addressing the city’s licensing board on Friday, licensing lawyer Stephen McGowan said: “You granted essentially equivalent licences for the friendlies. I’m very pleased to say they both went well, there were no adverse incidents. I think it was a good result for everyone involved with Hampden.”

“I suppose these are the next step in this wider project… to gather data on the safe use of hospitality provision in concourse areas.”

McGowan said the project is taking an “incremental” and “prudent” approach and “public safety has been at the heart of that process”, adding: “You’ve now got the comfort of knowing that two matches have been licensed without any difficulties.”

The bars will open at 5.45pm and last orders will be at 7pm ahead of the 7.45pm kick off. The hospitality areas will be in the level five east bronze and level five west bronze concourses. Only fans with tickets for seats in these areas are able to access the bars.

The move could mean Tartan Army fans will be able to toast new manager Sébastien Pocognoli’s men if Scotland qualify for the European Championships in 2028, which will be hosted across the UK and Ireland.

Supporters have become increasingly vocal over the years in their belief the 45-year-old ban is no longer fit for purpose given the huge changes across the sport in that time.

A limited trial allowing fans to drink at carefully pre-selected matches in the SPFL got underway last year with support from Police Scotland and the SNP Government.

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes remains unconvinced that Senne Lammens is the goalkeeper that can help the club return to former glories.

The Red Devils are back in the Champions League this season under Michael Carrick, but the possibility of challenging for the Premier League title still seems a distant prospect.

Carrick’s side has won just one of their opening four league games, losing to Hull City and Manchester City, while being held to a 2-2 draw at Everton.

New signings Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans have come into the team, while Carrick is still waiting for Carlos Baleba to be available after injury.

Manchester United brought in a new front three of Bryan Mbeumo, Benjamin Sesko and Matheus Cunha last year and have revamped the midfield this summer.

Scholes expects the defence to be improved next year and does not think much success can come before that happens.

Lammens was brought in last year and quickly established himself as first choice in goal, but the former midfielder is not sure he is the long-term answer.

‘I think they’re doing it in sections, that’s what it looks like,’ Scholes said on The Good, The Bad and The Football. ‘They sorted the forwards out last year and the forwards look alight. They still probably need a top class centre-forward, I’m not sure how much confidence they have in Sesko, although I think he has got better.

‘It looks like they did the midfield this year and it feels like the defence will probably come next year.

‘At this moment in time, defensively, they’re always going to concede goals in that team.

‘What team have you seen win the Premier League without a top class goalkeeper? Lammens might be that, I don’t know, I think the jury’s probably still out on that. Then you build from the back four.

‘The way Arsenal started three or four years ago Defensively they have been absolutely brilliant. You need a top class goalkeeper. You think of Liverpool’s team with Alisson, City’s teams, Raya at Arsenal. Man United with Peter Schmeichel and Edwin van der Sar.

‘They’ve all got brilliant, brilliant goalkeepers. You start from the back, of course you do.’

Scholes also expressed concern about the left-back position at his former club, with Luke Shaw already picking up an injury.

It was expected that Manchester United would sign another player in that position over the summer but they didn’t and Patrick Dorgu will be understudy to Shaw, which is a worry for Scholes.

‘They obviously thought with the Luke Shaw situation at left-back, that Dorgu would be okay,’ he said. ‘Well I don’t know if he is going to be okay there.’

Newcastle United have been dealt a major injury blow as Anthony Elanga faces a long-term spell on the sidelines.

Elanga has made an impressive start to the season with two goals in Newcastle’s opening three Premier League games.
