Editor’s note: The following contains major spoilers for Neagley.

Aside from showing up to give her mentor Jack Reacher (Alan Ritchson) a hand when he finds himself in sticky situations with very bad people on Reacher, Frances Neagley (Maria Sten) typically prefers to be a lone wolf. It wasn’t until things got very personal and she decided to pursue answers about a friend from her past having been killed in a mysterious but suspicious incident that proves to be no accident that Neagley realizes a team – including Detective Hudson Riley (Greyston Holt), Renee Birdwhistle (Adeline Rudolph), and Keno (Jasper Jones) – actually makes her stronger. They each come with their own baggage, whether that’s being a cop from a family of criminals, an assistant with a missing brother, or a young homeless man willing to break the rules, but Neagley can’t hold them against them when she brings along a bunch of baggage of her own.

Collider recently got the opportunity to chat with co-stars Holt, Rudolph, and Jones about how their characters fit into the world of Neagley, the fight scene that almost shut down production, Renee’s hidden skills, the unfortunate way Keno’s relationship with Mandy played out, Renee’s desire to find her brother, and what that kiss with Keno could mean for both of them.

An Intense Fight Scene in Episode 7 Almost Led to ‘Neagley’s Production Being Shut Down

“It was kind of scary for everybody.”

COLLIDER: To jump right into spoilers, Greyston, in Episode 7, Hudson and Murphy get into a pretty intense fight where you both are getting hit and thrown around. You ultimately kill him in what’s clearly a kill or be killed situation. What was it like to shoot that brutal fight?

GREYSTON HOLT: Yeah, I’ve done quite a few fight sequences over my career, and that fight, I’m the most proud of. There’s something so visceral and real and raw about it, and scrappy and messy. Neither of our characters from a background in martial arts. We’re just like trying to survive by trying to get the gun. That one was great. The last take of it, I twisted my ankle. I couldn’t walk on it. It was kind of scary for everybody. That can really hold up production. I really thought I was going to be out for at least a few days. And then, I went to the hospital and I felt better the next day, miraculously. So, strong ankles.

It’s a pretty great fight to watch because your character seemed pretty evenly matched throughout it.

HOLT: Yeah, you don’t know who’s going to win. I mean, you can assume, but it’s not obvious who’s going to come out on top.

Adeline, also in Episode 7, Renee ends up killing two people in an alley and has to explain to Neagley how she was even able to do that. What did you think of that moment? How do you think she felt about all of that? And what was that like to shoot?

ADELINE RUDOLPH: It was really fun. Neagley does ask, “How the heck did you do that?” So, Renee does have a background when it comes to martial arts, and she does have a background when it comes to being able to handle a weapon. She’s just never had to put it into practice. And so, I think that’s what we, the audience, get to see for the very first time – her really applying this to a real-life situation and being rattled by it emotionally, but also just having to do it because it was their lives were on the line.

I loved it because comes out of nowhere, and she is so effective at it.

RUDOLPH: A hundred percent. Yes. Yeah.

Jasper Jones Is Inspired by Keno’s Spirit and Lack of Cynicism in ‘Neagley’

“He definitely came into his own.”

Jasper, there’s something particularly sad about how everything plays out between Keno and Mandy. How did you feel about that relationship? Do you wish he could have gotten through to her in some way, or do you think it was important for him finding his own inner strength to be able to see through that kind of manipulation?

JASPER JONES: I think a bit of both. He definitely came into his own to see through the manipulation. But it just goes to show, the worst thing that could happen to him, in that moment, happens. This young man put his life on the line for this girl, multiple times. And to just have her spit in his face like that, that’s brutal. That’s brutal. But I think it’s really a testament to how strong the Keno spirit is. He gets mad, but he doesn’t become cynical. That’s the thing that I found most inspiring about him.

Greyston, before the end of the finale, Hudson actually gets congratulated for taking out Murphy instead of getting in trouble for it. How do you think he felt about that? Is that going to be something that he has to come to terms with? Is he going to have to reevaluate what he’s willing to do when it comes to taking down bad guys, if he’s going to continue working with Neagley?

HOLT: There was a lot of vindication in that moment, but I don’t think that changes his approach. He was put in a very specific situation there. I don’t think he’s going to go out seeking to kill cops now. It was just a particular situation. He was fighting for his life. I don’t even think he was trying to kill Murphy. It just happened. That’s what can happen when shit gets messy and you’re fighting for your life.

Adeline, Renee wants to find her brother, so do you hope you’ll be able to get into that in a possible Season 2? Do you have more insight for yourself, as far as where all that is going, or do you just have the questions that we all have?

RUDOLPH: A little bit of both. I definitely have the same questions. I don’t know where it’s going to go. But I do definitely think it’s something that we must be able to explore. It’s such a big part of Renee’s motivation in Season 1. She calls in this favor with Neagley, and now that she’s done Neagley this favor of helping her on the Tommy Crane case, I feel like she’s owed something now too. We leave on that note as well, in that final moment with Renee and Keno, where she’s showing him a photo. Let’s see what other secrets there are and what else we can uncover.

What Will That Renee and Keno Finale Kiss Mean in the Future of ‘Neagley’?

“It was just in the spur of the moment.”

I love that Keno and Renee do get to a point where they believe in each other and she kisses him before she walks away. What do you think that moment meant to each of them? How do you think their dynamic will continue to evolve in the future?

JONES: I’ll speak for Keno. I think Keno is starstruck. It’s just like, “Oh, my God, I didn’t think that a girl like that would ever do something like that.” It just wallops him. It wallops him in the best way. I like that we got to catch that spark of awe on camera. And that was a beautiful day. We were shooting in a park, and it just all came so naturally. We were working with MJ Bassett, and she’s a great director.

RUDOLPH: I like that there was something very innocent about the kiss. It didn’t feel like this grand gesture of love or anything. It was just in the spur of the moment. These two characters have gone through a lot, and they’ve built this relationship where they trust each other and feel a fondness and closeness. Dare I say that moment for Renee was spontaneous, even though she’s not necessarily a spontaneous person. There’s something very innocent about it, even on Renee’s side, which maybe is a side of her that we haven’t gotten to see yet and that comes out in that moment.

JONES: It felt like a button to all of this horror that we just went through. It felt like a good button that was natural and honest, as opposed to, “Let’s be boyfriend and girlfriend.”

RUDOLPH: Exactly.

JONES: It just felt natural, like it would happen that way.

HOLT: I thought you guys played that scene beautifully.

It’s really cute, especially with her walking away. It doesn’t leave a moment for him to say anything to mess it up.

RUDOLPH: Yeah.

JONES: Mic drop.

Less than a month after the country music legend’s death at age 80, Hollywood’s grief was still raw, and the ceremony became an unexpected reflection on the challenge of honoring someone whose impact stretched far beyond entertainment. 

Rather than focusing on awards, many of the night’s most emotional moments centered on the void Parton’s passing has created among friends who are still struggling to say goodbye.

Award shows are designed to celebrate the present, but for several minutes on Monday night, the Emmys became a place to process a loss that many in Hollywood still seem unable to fully accept.

The emotion surrounding Dolly Parton’s death was evident long before the tribute ended. When Sally Field took the stage, she wasn’t simply introducing a memorial segment. She was speaking as someone who had carried affection for Parton for decades.

“If there are truly angels on Earth, then we just lost one, Dolly Parton,” Field said, according to the Daily Mail.

What followed felt less like a prepared speech and more like a friend trying to explain why the loss hurt so much.

“It was my great, good fortune to have worked with Dolly in a film called Steel Magnolias,” she said, adding, “And over the years, I never stopped loving her, though we lived very far apart. I adored her from day one. How could you not?”

One of the most striking aspects of the tribute was that it rarely focused on records sold, awards won, or milestones achieved.

Instead, Field spent much of her time talking about the qualities that made Dolly Parton unforgettable away from the spotlight.

“She was genuine and humble, supportive and blisteringly funny with a bawdy sense of humor that would send any rude guy looking for a place to hide,” Field said.

The actress also admitted that she didn’t immediately grasp the full scale of the “Jolene” singer’s influence when they first worked together.

“I couldn’t see then what a real giant Dolly was, not just as an artist, but as a human,” she stated. That realization became the emotional core of the tribute. 

Field also spoke about the charitable work and generosity that defined so much of Parton’s life, describing her as “a humanitarian whose contributions have made a profound difference in the lives of so many in her home state of Tennessee and across our country.”

Dolly Parton’s Closest Friends Revealed The Depth Of Their Loss

If Field’s speech showed how much Parton meant to those around her, the moments that followed revealed how difficult it has been for friends to move forward without her.

Reba McEntire took the stage for a moving performance of the country legend’s 1983 song “Appalachian Memories,” accompanied by an orchestra.

Rather than treating the song as a performance, McEntire delivered it as a heartfelt farewell.

Later, she reflected on the experience on Instagram, writing, “I will always love and miss you, Dolly. What an honor to celebrate @DollyParton tonight.”

While Hollywood continues to mourn, officials in Nashville are working on something far more permanent: ensuring that generations of travelers encounter Parton’s name the moment they arrive in Music City.

The effort to rename Nashville International Airport in her honor has moved significantly closer to becoming reality. 

Earlier this month, the Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority voted unanimously, 6-0, to begin the formal process of modifying the airport’s name in recognition of the late singer. 

Officials stressed that they had not yet selected a final name, but confirmed discussions were underway about how best to incorporate Parton’s legacy. 

The proposal has drawn unusually broad support. Tennessee Governor Bill Lee announced the initiative shortly after Parton’s death, calling her Tennessee’s “favorite daughter” and saying it was fitting that a place where Tennessee welcomes visitors from around the world should carry her name.

Dolly Parton’s Unreleased Music Is Opening A New Chapter Of Her Legacy

While Tennessee looks for ways to honor Parton physically, fans are also discovering that her creative legacy is far from finished.

In the weeks following her death, renewed interest has emerged around previously unheard music that Parton left behind. 

As PEOPLE reported, one of the most intriguing revelations came from bestselling author Kim Michele Richardson, who disclosed that Parton created an entire album inspired by her novel “The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek.”

According to Richardson, the project contains 15 original songs and was gifted to her privately after Parton fell in love with the story’s themes of literacy and Appalachian life. 

At the same time, Parton’s first posthumous release has already arrived. Her recording of “Bound to Ride,” a song connected to the Stanley Brothers tribute album “Where the Soul Never Dies: Celebrating 80 Years of the Stanley Brothers,” was released just weeks after her passing.

The recording was originally made in 2022 and has been described as a return to her Appalachian roots.

Kim Kardashian has reportedly walked away with 1 euro after the conclusion of her Paris robbery case — but did she want more?

According to The Associated Press, a Paris court awarded 1 euro ($1.15) to Kardashian, 45, on Tuesday, September 15, nearly 10 years after she was held at gunpoint and allegedly forced to hand over her expensive jewelry.

The outlet reported that a lawyer involved in the case claimed Kardashian requested 1 euro as compensation following the conclusion of the case.

While Kardashian didn’t address the monetary aspect of her case, she issued a joint statement with stylist Simone Harouche on Tuesday, thanking the French justice system for working diligently. (Harouche, who was present during the robbery, was also awarded the 1 euro she asked for, per the AP.)

“We are grateful to the French justice system for recognizing us as victims of the terrible events that took place in Paris in 2016,” the pair told Us in a statement. “The experience was deeply traumatic, and its impact has stayed with us.”

Kardashian and Harouche continued, “Today’s decision is not about the compensation, but about accountability and recognition. We are thankful to the Court and everyone who supported us throughout this process, and we hope to now move forward and continue to heal.”

In October 2016, Kardashian traveled to Paris for Fashion Week, carrying with her a case of jewelry worth over $10 million.

While the reality star was alone in her hotel room one night, five men reportedly broke into her room claiming to be law enforcement and demanded she hand over her $4 million engagement ring from then-husband Kanye West.

“I heard a noise at the door, like, footsteps, and I shouted to ask who was there, but no one answered,” Kardashian told the French police, according to Le Journal du Dimanche. “I called my bodyguard at 2:56 a.m. Then, beyond the sliding doors, I saw two people arrive with the gentleman from reception, and he was tied up.”

Kardashian alleged, “Both men were hooded, one had a ski mask and he had a cap and a jacket with ‘police’ on it. The second man had the same ‘police’ clothes, but did not have any ski mask. … It was the one with the ski mask who stayed with me.”

The Keeping Up With the Kardashians alum claimed that the assailants tied her up and pointed a gun at her before leaving with the jewels.

Harouche later recalled being woken up to a sound she’d never heard before from her longtime friend.

“It was terror,” Harouche told Palais de Justice, noting she was asleep downstairs when the alleged robbery transpired. “What I heard specifically was ‘I have babies and I need to live, take everything, I need to live.’ She came into my room and she had tape around her. I thought she could have been raped or very violated.”

In January 2017, multiple suspects were arrested, with 10 individuals eventually being charged in connection with the robbery.

“The crime was the most terrifying experience of my life, leaving a lasting impact on me and my family,” Kardashian said in a statement after the May 2025 verdict. “While I’ll never forget what happened, I believe in the power of growth and accountability and pray for healing for all. I remain committed to advocating for justice, and promoting a fair legal system.”

The AP reported on Tuesday that the Paris court awarded 109,516 euros ($126,472) to a former receptionist at the Hôtel de Pourtalès .

According to the outlet, the hotel itself — which is where Kardashian was staying at the time of the robbery — was also awarded 50,000 euros ($57,741).

Ed Sheeran‘s Loop Tour is facing another wave of changes following the controversy surrounding Macklemore‘s removal due to his pro-Palestine remarks at a performance. The rapper was dropped from remaining dates, and now, other music acts have departed in solidarity with Macklemore. The exits have left Sheeran’s tour lineup looking very different as the controversy continues to unfold.

Macklemore’s removal from Ed Sheeran’s Loop Tour is greatly affecting how the rest of the remaining concert dates will play out. As Macklemore noted in a lengthy post, Sheeran was caught in a “f-cked up position” after venues said they wouldn’t host concerts if he was performing, per The Blast.

After Macklemore’s dismissal, one of the other opening acts, Aaron Rowe, decided to exit the tour. “I cannot stand by and allow billionaires to use their position of power to silence the rightful voices of those who speak up against Israeli genocide and who highlight the savage murder or children,” he said in a statement.

Macklemore said billionaire businessman Robert Kraft, who owns one of the concert venues, Gillette Stadium, rallied other venue owners to remove him from the lineup or Sheeran wouldn’t be allowed to perform at the locations.

Now, all the supporting acts have taken a stance, announcing their departures from the tour.

Lukas Graham And Finneas Announce Their Exits

The other two remaining supporting acts, Lukas Graham and Finneas, have also made announcements about their departure from the tour.

Finneas took to Instagram and posted a simple statement, saying that artists “must not be silenced” when they draw attention to those facing oppression. “I stand with Palestine and its people,” he wrote.

Graham, on the other hand, said he was grateful to Sheeran for their time together, but he has to stand by his beliefs. “I grew up in Christiania, a small community in Denmark where speaking your mind was part of everyday life. Having more money didn’t make your opinion worth more than anyone else’s,” he wrote.

The Irish band, Beoga, has been working with Sheeran for more than a decade, collaborating on tracks and joining the singer for live performances and tours.

The group announced their exit from the Loop Tour on Instagram and expressed their appreciation to Sheeran for the opportunity they have been given. However, they noted that they were present during Macklemore’s controversial speech and “fully supported” his remarks.

“As founding members of the Irish Artists For Palestine movement, we are committed activists for justice and will continue to be,” Beoga noted.

Ed Sheeran Clarified Facts Amid Backlash

Following Macklemore’s dismissal, Sheeran faced backlash for remaining apolitical. The singer took to social media and clarified his stance, noting that he, too, is “appalled by the conflict between Israel and Palestine.”

Sheeran shared that he had been in talks with venues and attempted to “build a bridge” and find a resolution following Macklemore’s pro-Palestine remarks, “but the venue’s and promoter’s decision was final.” He stressed that Macklemore’s contract was with the promoter, and it was their judgment to remove him from the lineup.

The singer went on to say that he has personal views but chooses not to make them public because his audience includes children and people from all backgrounds. “Those who come to my shows do not expect a political forum,” he noted.

Critics Challeng Ed Sheeran’s Apolitical Stance

Amid the controversy, some point out that Sheeran had been vocal about certain issues in the past, making his apolitism selective.

Sheeran has previously used his platform to support Ukraine, including performing at a fundraiser and donating royalties from his “2step” music video to the Disasters Emergency Committee’s Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal.

Some argue that Sheeran remaining silent about the Israel-Palestine conflict can itself be interpreted as taking a side, especially since other artists have used their platforms to speak out.

Justin Hartley hinted that Tracker will be making one major change.

Hartley, 49, spoke about Colter’s death count so far, telling Entertainment Weekly on Tuesday, September 15, “I was like, ‘Well, this guy can’t be killing six people per week. This is ridiculous.’”

Based on Jeffery Deaver’s novel The Never Game, Tracker follows Colter as he travels the country helping to find missing people (or sometimes dogs) and solving cold cases. Hartley previously caused some concern when he hinted that Colter might not survive every case he is on.

“The season 3 finale, this actually is kind of a spoiler. But basically my character dies and he goes to heaven,” Hartley quipped on a May episode of The Tonight Show. “The angels are like, ‘Help, Abraham Lincoln is missing.’ So I track him down and it turns out he’s at a Jamba Juice. It was unbelievable.”

Since Tracker premiered on CBS, Justin Hartley has taken it upon himself to remind viewers that his character Colter Shaw can — and will — die. While the finale didn’t actually show Colter in a near-death situation, Hartley hasn’t ruled it out as an option.

“It’s important to keep upping the stakes. I like being Colter as a hero, finding people and all that. I also really like seeing him in a suspenseful thriller and a dangerous situation,” he told The Hollywood Reporter about the high stakes his character faces in April 2025. “I don’t want our audience to forget that this man is mortal, he’s not a superhero. He can die! The things he is doing are very very dangerous.”

More recently, executive producer Elwood Reid weighed in on Colter’s fate.

“Some of the danger is in here because he’s not a cop. He is this guy who is poking his nose in places. The network is always like, ‘He can get messed up, he can lose a fight, he can get conked on the head and he can have a gun pointed at him,’” Reid, 59, told Us in October 2025. “Justin pitched an idea for the season 3 midseason finale where it doesn’t go well for Colter. That’s what makes him fun is he is not a superhero.”

Reid noted that Tracker is always searching for ways to surprise viewers.

“When I watch a lot of these types of shows, the minute the character becomes infallible or perfect then I’m uninterested,” Reid explained. “I like when characters have flaws and make mistakes and are mortal and can be wounded and can screw up.”

He continued: “I’m very conscious of not making Colter too perfect. We are scuffing him up, letting him screw up and letting him do the wrong thing. I think that’s what makes the character fun to write — at least for me.”

TV shows based on movies have long been a go-to for networks, and it’s easy to see why. The potential audience is already there, the title is familiar, and there are usually beloved characters or worlds worth revisiting. Sometimes that works, as with shows like Stargate, Fargo, and Cobra Kai, which all found new stories to explore and gave audiences a reason to keep coming back.

The same claim can’t be made for every attempt to spin a hit movie into a returning TV show, since the list of those that tried and failed is far, far longer than the successes. From questionable adaptations of cult classics like Darkman to blockbuster comedies starring Eddie Murphy, these failed TV pilots confirm that not every hit movie can support an ongoing series.

‘Coming to America’ (1989)

In the first of two Eddie Murphy movies on this list, Coming to America had barely landed on video before CBS rushed to make a pilot for a family-friendly sitcom. You can almost see why the network believed this was a viable TV show idea. The movie was a huge box-office hit, and its clear fish-out-of-water setup is very TV-friendly, and Murphy was going to be involved as one of the executive producers. Instead of rebooting the story entirely, the pilot is more of a spin-off that follows Tommy Davidson (In Living Color) as the previously unmentioned Prince Tariq, the younger brother of Murphy’s now-King Akeem.

Tariq is exiled to Queens to go to college, with his royal assistant Oha (Paul Bates from the original movie) by his side. The pilot works a little too hard to force the characters into the same situations from the film, and while Tommy Davidson is a fantastic comedic performer, he’s clearly been told to do his best Eddie Murphy impression. Even by 1980s standards, the jokes feel dated, and the cast has practically no rapport. The pilot aired only once alongside other failed TV shows as part of the short-lived CBS Summer Playhouse. A low-quality version can be found online, but it’s still not the worst comedy project Eddie Murphy has been involved in.

‘Darkman’ (1992)

Two years after Sam Raimi‘s gonzo superhero movie Darkman, Universal Television tried to turn Peyton Westlake into a half-hour TV hero. British actor Christopher Bowen took over from Liam Neeson as the synthetic-skin scientist whose work becomes horribly useful after an explosion leaves him scarred and his wife dead.

Larry Drake returns as crime lord Durant, and that’s not the only thing from the original cult classic movie that makes a comeback. The pilot shamelessly reuses multiple action scenes, and even some of Durant and Westlake’s fights get recycled. Aside from trying to turn a dark, complex, and violent character into a standard TV vigilante, the pilot never leans into the movie’s inherent madness. Raimi’s movie is pulp horror mixed with superhero tragedy while being on fire and screaming. Those elements don’t neatly fit into a half-hour procedural crime drama. The pilot wasn’t picked up, though there is a version on YouTube if you’re feeling brave. This failed attempt shows how quickly something as unique as Darkman becomes ordinary when it’s forced into a TV formula it was never built for. While Darkman did return for two TV movie sequels starring Arnold Vosloo (The Mummy), recent talk from Raimi suggests that an official sequel could be in the works.

‘Zombieland’ (2013)

Made as part of Amazon Prime’s long-defunct pilot season, Zombieland came full circle. Its writers, Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick initially developed the idea as a TV show before it was retooled into a movie. The duo returned to write the pilot with Eli Craig (Tucker and Dale vs. Evil) stepping in to direct. In what may have been the pilot’s biggest issue, it used the same characters from the movie, which remains one of the funniest zombie films of all time.

The episode picks up shortly after the first movie with Tallahassee (Kirk Ward), Columbus (Tyler Ross), Wichita (Maiara Walsh), and Little Rock (Izabela Vidovic) now searching for somewhere new to call home. The problem wasn’t that it had no potential as a TV show, a zombie road trip series could be a lot of fun. The pilot might have worked with new characters exploring a different corner of Zombieland. But by recasting the characters, it immediately invited comparisons to the movie cast, and that was always going to be a tough act to follow. Unlike all the other pilots on this list, the fate of the show was firmly in the hands of the audience, as they got to watch it and then vote on whether they wanted to see more. Thankfully, they did not, as it’s up there with some of the worst TV pilots of all-time.

‘Tremors’ (2018)

With seven movies and an underrated short-lived TV series, Tremors has already been a well-mined franchise. Yet none of those projects tried to bring back original star Kevin Bacon for a rematch with the Graboids. That injustice was set to be rectified with a planned eight-part series from Syfy that would have seen Bacon’s Val McKee return to the small town of Perfection.

Sadly, Tremors is the only failed TV pilot on this list that has never been released, so the main evidence it exists is the shockingly good teaser. The trailer gave audiences a taste of what could have been. Twenty-five years on, Val is no longer the charming accidental hero from the original cult classic. Worse yet, he is trapped in the one place he never wanted to return to as he tries to repair his relationship with his daughter Emily (Emily Tremaine). Middle age and family problems are not the only things Val has to grapple with, as the next evolution of Graboids returns to where it all started. Despite all the promising set pieces glimpsed in the trailer, Tremors failed to secure a series order from Syfy. Most likely, the high cost of a special-effects-driven series with a movie star had more to do with the decision than quality. Now that the rights for the franchise are back with the original creators, there is still a chance for Val McKee to make a triumphant monster-hunting return.

‘Beverly Hills Cop’ (2013)

This list concludes the way it started with a failed TV pilot based on an Eddie Murphy movie. He might have taken 30 years to star in another Beverly Hills Cop sequel, but Murphy returned to his iconic role more than a decade earlier in an unsold TV pilot for CBS. Brandon T. Jackson (Tropic Thunder) starred as Axel Foley’s now-grown-up son, who, just like his old man, is a cop. Heading to Beverly Hills to strike out on his own, Aaron quickly gets into trouble, and Axel (Eddie Murphy) shows up to help.

This should have been an easy series order for CBS. It’s directed by Barry Sonnenfeld (Men in Black), written by Shawn Ryan (The Shield), and even has a cameo from Judge Reinhold as Billy Rosewood. The test screenings and network response were positive, and they all wanted the same thing for future episodes—more Axel Foley. Suddenly, the biggest reason to tune into the show became the sticking point that turned a series order into a failed pilot. Murphy had no desire to be a recurring character, and the network had no interest in a series without Axel showing up periodically. They were not wrong about that. The scenes with Murphy have all the superstar fizz and watchability you would expect, and the father-son dynamic really works. The reality is, once you’ve glimpsed that kind of chemistry, it’s almost impossible to imagine a series without it.

Rob Reiner left a lasting impression on Hollywood down to one of his final performances as a guest star on The Bear prior to his death in 2025.

“Rob is such an incredible force,” The Bear coexecutive producer and lead culinary producer, Courtney Storer, exclusively told Us on Monday, September 14, at the 2026 Emmy Awards after working with Reiner on season 4 of the FX series.

Storer, 42, noted that having Rob and his late wife, Michele Singer Reiner, join them on set “and being able to love him and get to meet him and be around him. I feel so lucky and fortunate.”

She continued, “He will always be missed. I think his legacy lives on in all of our hearts, and we tried to honor that within the show, even [the] ending, and he will just be missed.” (Rob played businessman Albert Schnurr on the show.)

Storer, who has been part of The Bear’s team since the series premiere in 2022, added, “They’ll both be missed forever.”

Rob and Michele were found dead in their Brentwood, California, home in December 2025 at the ages of 78 and 70, respectively. They were discovered with multiple sharp force injuries.

The couple’s youngest son, Nick Reiner, was arrested on suspicion of his parents’ murders that same month and later charged with two counts of first-degree murder. He pleaded not guilty in February.

News broke on Tuesday, September 15, that Nick, 33, will not receive the death penalty if he’s convicted of murder.

“After a careful and thorough review of all these factors, the district attorney’s office will not be seeking the death penalty in this case,” Los Angeles District Attorney Nathan Hochman told NBC News and reporters before a pretrial hearing. “That means that the maximum sentence that Mr. Reiner will be looking at is life without the possibility of parole.”

Hochman noted that his team spoke with Nick’s siblings and “they made their views very clear.” (Rob and Michele also shared son Jake, 35, and daughter Romy, 28. Additionally, Rob was the father of daughter Tracy, 62, whom he adopted during his previous marriage to the late Penny Marshall.)

“We took their views into consideration in ultimately deciding not to seek the death penalty,” the DA added.

In the wake of his and Michele’s deaths, Rob and his legacy as an actor and director have continued to be honored and remembered.

That was the case at the 2026 Creative Arts Emmys on September 5, when Rob won the posthumous award for Guest Actor in a Comedy Series thanks to his role as Albert during season 4 of The Bear.

Presenter Wendi McLendon-Covey accepted the award on his behalf and the audience gave him a standing ovation. “We all wish he was here,” she said.

Jamie Lee Curtis, a longtime friend of Rob and fellow actress on The Bear, honored Rob and Michele during the in memoriam segment at the Emmys one week later.

The actress, 67, teared up telling the crowd, “He was generous and kind, and funny as hell, and a friend to all, and we all miss Rob and Michele, and all those we lost this year.”

The Bear, meanwhile, paid homage to Rob during the series finale in June.

The last 26 years have seen mystery cinema subvert traditional tropes and formulas, bring a stronger emphasis on psychological realism and non-linear story structures, and dare to dive deeper into taboo subjects that may not have been seen with nearly the same frequency just a few decades ago. Anyone who loves a good mystery film ought to check out the six biggest masterpieces that the genre has delivered since right before the turn of the century.

‘Anatomy of a Fall’ (2023)

The last six years have seen the release of many exceptional mystery movies, but the question of which one is the best of the bunch isn’t really much of a question. It has to be Justine Triet‘s Palme d’Or-winning Anatomy of a Fall, a masterpiece whose twist on the legal drama genre is unlike anything else it has seen in recent memory. All courtroom dramas are, at their core, about the nature of Truth as a philosophical concept; but few get into the subjectivity and ambiguity of justice with quite as much scathing depth as Triet’s magnum opus does.

Devised by Triet and co-writer Arthur Harari as a Hitchcockian sort of procedural thriller, Anatomy of a Fall didn’t only live up to that mission, but rather surpassed it and delivered a thought-provoking experience all of its own. Anchored by Sandra Hüller‘s Oscar-nominated powerhouse performances, the whole film is a meditation on truth, gender, relationships, and the intricacies of the legal system which only grows all the more complex on re-watch. Triet’s direction is absolutely stellar, and her and Harari’s screenplay is one of the best of the 2020s so far.

‘Oldboy’ (2003)

Park Chan-wook, one of the greatest masters in the history of Korean cinema, has delivered several of the greatest thrillers of the 21st century. Typically regarded as his very best, Oldboy is a loose adaptation of the Japanese manga Old Boy by Garon Tsuchiya and Nobuaki Minegishi, recipient of the 2004 Cannes Film Festival Grand Prix and of the utmost critical and audience acclaim. Seeing as it’s one of the most disturbing non-horror movies of all time, it’s definitely not an action thriller fit for all cinephilic palates. Those with the stomach for an absolutely harrowing, unabashedly brutal mystery flick, however, will likely find it absolutely riveting.

What’s not to praise when watching Oldboy? The action sequences are creatively shot and of the most enthralling narrative significance; the plot twists are as jaw-dropping as they are boldly shocking; and Choi Min-sik‘s lead performance is one of the best of any mystery film from the 2000s. Those looking for visceral action will be every bit as satisfied as those looking for a psychological puzzle that subverts the typical tropes of the mystery genre in all sorts of razor-sharp ways. It’s true that Oldboy isn’t for everyone, but it’s also undeniable that it’s one of the best international movies of the 21st century to date.

‘Incendies’ (2010)

Before he became a Hollywood legend making some of the greatest sci-fi films and genre-defining blockbusters that the American film industry has seen in years, Denis Villeneuve was an up-and-coming Canadian filmmaker already making masterpieces of the stature of Incendies. Still deemed by many as Villeneuve’s true magnum opus, this entirely unconventional war drama is based on Wajdi Mouawad‘s play of the same name, itself based on parts of the life of Lebanese communist militant Souha Bechara. This is yet another instance of a film so brutally gut-wrenching that it’s definitely not for everyone, but nonetheless remains an absolute must-see for those who can bear its ferocity.

It is, after all, one of the best Canadian movies of all time, a testament to the tremendous quality of what the country has had to offer over the course of the last 26 years. The performances are all absolutely exceptional, particularly Lubna Azabal‘s flooring turn; Villenueve’s direction is as powerfully subtle as it is uproariously devastating; and the screenplay penned by him and Valérie Beaugrand-Champagne is one of the best of the last couple of decades. Part political war drama, part modern Greek tragedy, this is a mystery film that pivots around one of the most brutal plot twists that modern cinema has thus far seen.

‘Get Out’ (2017)

Who could have possibly predicted that a comedian as hysterical and immensely talented as Jordan Peele would also end up being one of the freshest, most exciting new voices in horror cinema? It’s hard to imagine how anyone could have. After all, Get Out is one of the most surprisingly high-quality directing debuts that Hollywood has had to offer in years, and can already be counted among the best psychological thrillers of the last 90 years. Though it’s by no means devoid of the dark humor that Peele fans would expect, it’s also an undeniably scary horror flick that’s among the best that the genre has seen on the big screen throughout the last 26 years.

Anchored by Daniel Kaluuya‘s masterful lead performance and Peele’s career-defining turn as a writer-director, Get Out is proof of how far modern horror and mystery movies can go in delivering hard-hitting and timely social critiques while remaining irresistibly entertaining throughout the whole thing. Indeed, what makes Get Out so special is how masterfully it balances scathing satirical humor, thematic explorations of the horrors of modern racism and racial exploitation, and character-driven drama. Incredibly re-watchable and impeccably written, it’s a must-see masterpiece for anyone who enjoys mystery horror.

‘Mulholland Drive’ (2001)

There has never been a cinematic auteur quite like David Lynch, and there never will again. A director so special that people had to come up with a term, “Lynchian,” in order to explain the unique feeling that his works inevitably elicit, he made contributions to surrealist cinema as foundational as those made by the artists who defined the genre itself back in the early 20th century. But though he made masterpiece after masterpiece over the course of his career, Lynch made one movie that’s often deemed his very best, and that’s Mulholland Drive.

One of the most beloved thriller movies of the 21st century, Mulholland Drive is the ultimate Lynchian masterwork; a study of identity, gender, and the dark side of the Hollywood Dream which somehow only keeps getting better with age. Is it the amazing cast, featuring career-best performances by Naomi Watts and Laura Harring? Is it Lynch’s luscious yet potently mysterious and bizarre direction? Is it the many moments of head-scratching surrealism that anyone who loves weird cinema should absolutely cherish? Whatever it is that makes Mulholland Drive a masterpiece, it’s one that anyone who loves mystery cinema should check out at least once in their lives.

‘Memento’ (2000)

Before he became one of the undisputed kings of modern Hollywood blockbuster filmmaking, Christopher Nolan was an indie filmmaker like any other—except that his work was far more exciting and indicative that he would become a total legend than most of his peers’ work. Case in point: his sophomore feature, Memento, which became an immediate critical darling the moment it premiered at the Venice Film Festival. However, its journey to mainstream success was a slow uphill battle, one marked by Hollywood’s rejection and a slow-burn box office rollout. It should come as no surprise, considering that it’s perhaps the single most notorious example of a movie structured in reverse chronological order.

As the years have passed, though, many have come to retroactively see Memento as Nolan’s true best film to date, and certainly one of the most suspenseful thrillers you’ll ever watch. Blanco shared that it feels like he is living in a fairy tale, as it has been “so easy” and wonderful to build a future with his best friend. He explained that the conjugal bliss they’ve enjoyed makes the days pass by so fast, and they are effortlessly in sync with each other.

“Honestly, it happened so quickly. I was literally just talking to Selena yesterday cause we’re about to celebrate our one year, and I was like, ‘What even happened?’ It’s like done already,” Blaco told Hager.
