A British mother who was kidnapped in Malawi has made a safe return home following a daring rescue mission.

Nusrat Osman, 47, was abducted in the Mount Pleasant area of Blantyre last Friday.

The mother-of-two has now been found safe and returned home, her brother Shobi Jiwa confirmed.

Mrs Osman, from Leicester, had been working in Malawi as an auditor after moving to the country for her husband’s job.

Jiwa said a senior police officer was shot during the operation to rescue his sister.

Deputy Inspector General of Police Noel Kayira was shot during the operation to find Mrs Osman but survived and was said to be out of danger.

He did not disclose where the shooting occurred or identify the people who were allegedly holding Mrs Osman.

‘We are deeply grateful to Noel Kayira, Deputy Inspector General of the Malawi Police, who took a bullet to his body and bravely saved our sister Nusrat,’ he said.

The development comes six days after police reported Mrs Osman had been abducted.

Police said four men believed to have been using a grey Nissan Dualis snatched the mother off the street as she did the school run.

The Malawi Police Service had offered a K30 million reward for credible information leading to Mrs Osman’s rescue and the arrest, prosecution and conviction of the perpetrators.

Jiwa said is sister is is ‘smiling’ and, miraculously, ‘not too shaken’ after the terrifying capture.

Speaking before she was found,  Jiwa described the ‘traumatising’ moment of the kidnapping, saying four armed men dragged Mrs Osman out of her car and took her away.

‘My sister has been missing for five days with no trace or call,’ he said.

Asked if he had any idea about the motive, he added: ‘There is nothing we can think of.’

Local outlet Nyasa Times spoke to her husband, who said: ‘I don’t know where she is or how she is. My wife is an auditor and I have no issues with anyone.’

Police were yet to comment on the development.

Experts share the everyday habit that can slash hospital risk for heart patients

Experts share the everyday habit that can slash hospital risk for heart patients

Researchers say prescribing exercise to people with heart problems could slash hospital admissions, with home-based digital programmes just as beneficial as in-person sessions.

Experts at the University of Glasgow analysed 107 trials involving 26,886 people with coronary heart disease, which happens when fatty deposits narrow or block the arteries that supply blood to the heart. Most patients had had a heart attack, experienced chest pain, or undergone a heart procedure.

The new review found that working out can play a “vital role” in recovery, as exercise-based rehabilitation slashed the risk of heart attacks by 28 per cent.

It also helped reduce hospital admissions by 35 per cent.

Dr Grace Dibben, from the University of Glasgow, said the review “shows that exercise-based cardiac rehabilitation can reduce the risk of heart attack and hospital admission while helping people return to healthier, more active lives.

“Many people lose confidence after a heart attack or cardiac procedure and worry that physical activity could be dangerous.

“Appropriately prescribed exercise is not only safe for most patients, but can play a vital role in recovery and long-term heart health.”

The analysis included 22 new trials featuring almost 3,500 people. The studies included patients in low and middle-income countries who were testing digital programmes.

Researchers suggest exercise completed in the home may be just as beneficial as attending in-person sessions.

Professor Rod Taylor, also of the University of Glasgow, said: “This review confirms that exercise is a great tool for improving the overall health of people with coronary heart disease.

“By adding newer studies to this update, we’re able to see that digital programmes work as well as in-person programmes, which really changes the game here.

“These approaches may help us reach people who cannot attend traditional centre-based services.”

Dr Dibben added: “Exercise-based cardiac rehabilitation is an inexpensive and cost-effective intervention, but right now it’s underfunded and unprioritised.

“We want this option to be available to everyone.

“This new research shows you don’t even have to go into a rehab centre to benefit – you can participate from home and still see the benefits.”

Gavin Robinson reveals meetings with Jon Burrows as DUP plot Assembly election strategy

Published

on

Belfast Live

The DUP and Ulster Unionist leaders have already held meetings, with DUP leader calling for unionist parties to co-operate ahead of next year’s poll

Unionists will not tolerate “egos” scuppering the “huge opportunity” that is next year’s Stormont Assembly election, DUP leader Gavin Robinson has said.

Mr Robinson said unionists want to see unionist parties co-operating, and revealed he has met with UUP leader Jon Burrows and has more meetings planned.

The last Assembly election in 2022 saw Sinn Féin make history by being the first non-unionist party to top the poll, and Michelle O’Neill become the first nationalist First Minister.

Then Sinn Féin (27 MLAs) finished two seats ahead of the DUP (25), which now has 26 Assembly seats following the co-option of Peter Martin after the election of independent Alex Easton to Westminster in 2024.

Asked whether he believes his party can top the poll and reclaim the post of first minister, Mr Robinson described a “huge opportunity for the wider unionist community” and called for unionist parties to co-operate.

He said the UUP benefited from co-operation in the past, referring to the election of Tom Elliott to the Fermanagh South Tyrone Westminster seat in 2015.

“If 2022 taught us anything it’s that division costs – there are fewer unionists around the Executive table because of division within unionism, and so I believe that in this election in May, unionism can win if it is prepared to co-operate,” he said.

“I am willing to co-operate with other unionists. That’s not a new thing. I benefited from co-operation in 2015.

“The Ulster Unionists benefited from co-operation in 2015, and actually throughout the history of our party there has been a willingness to co-operate within the wider strategic interests of unionism.

“It’s not for us; it’s to advance the principles that we have, the benefits of being in being in the United Kingdom, the benefits from Northern Ireland, and benefiting through cultural and historic and family and economic ties right throughout this United Kingdom, being a part of the sixth largest economy in the world, all of that is beneficial for Northern Ireland and for all of our people.

“The opportunity is for unionism to win, but it’ll only happen, if individual parties with, sometimes simply nuanced differences, are able to co-operate and collaborate to deliver for people rather than only ourselves.”

Mr Robinson said it is also an opportunity for TUV leader Jim Allister and his party.

“I don’t think anyone should have veto on this process. I don’t think anyone should come in with preconceived notions or an agenda, because the people that we represent require it,” he said.

“They’re asking it of us. I’m more than willing to have those conversations, and I’ll do that in a collective way.

“Whether others are as enthusiastic or not remains to be seen but these conversations need to happen privately, I don’t think it’s worth going through all of the options or all of the various twists and turns.

“What I know is our electorate require it. They ask it all of us.

“They will not tolerate egos getting in the way, and nor will they tolerate some misplaced ambition to upturn party strengths, party positions, they’ll not take that only to find that in May 2027, unionism collectively is weakened and diminished because individual leaders prepared for themselves first, rather than collective calls.”

He added: “I see Jim quite often in Westminster. He knows that there’s an interest in these discussions.

“We’ve had previous discussions that were hosted with the Orange Order in Schomburg House about wider co-operation.

“But I think the onus is on all of us to engage productively and with an open mind and faithfully in these discussions.”

Earlier this year, Mr Burrows said he was prepared to talk to any unionist about maximising the unionist vote, but also said he was aiming to see the UUP return to its former strength of being the largest unionist party.

Terrifying moment man drives wrong way during police chase before running into road

Duran Arnet was seen driving on the wrong side of the road in a bid to escape police

A man who sped down the wrong way in a bid to escape police has been jailed.

The dangerous driver was spotted by police as his red Ford Focus was flagged for intelligence. As officers attempted to stop the car on Thursday (September 10), Duran Arnet sped off.

The 36-year-old made off on the A4174 near Wick Wick Roundabout in a bid to evade officers.

Arnet also had a child in the car who was sitting in the passenger seat without a seat belt on.

As officers pursued Arnet, of Berwick Road, Easton, which he was seen driving into the path of oncoming traffic, drove at excessive speeds and he mounted the pavement. He also travelled the wrong way round the roundabout, Bristol Live reports.

Police said the dangerous driving continued through Longwell Green before the vehicle entered the Emerald Park area, where Arnet abandoned the car and ran off.

He tried to evade officers by running into the A4174 dual carriageway but was arrested after a short foot chase.

You can watch the dramatic police chase at the top of this article.

Amet was charged with dangerous driving, driving while disqualified, driving without insurance, failing to stop for police and using a vehicle without a valid MOT certificate.

He was remanded into custody and attended Bristol Magistrates Court on Friday, September 11, where he received an immediate custodial sentence of 28 weeks.

PC Jack Fare said: “Amet’s driving showed a complete disregard for the safety of other road users and pedestrians. Throughout the incident, his actions created significant risk to members of the public.

“It is particularly concerning that he carried out these dangerous manoeuvres while a passenger, who was a minor and not wearing a seatbelt, was in the vehicle.”

“We welcome the custodial sentence, which reflects the seriousness of his offending.”

Cambridge Market refurb could spell ‘beginning of the end’ for traders

Published

on

Cambridgeshire Live

Cambridge City Council’s planning committee approved plans for a multi-million pound redevelopment of Cambridge Market Square, but traders say they have been left in limbo waiting to hear where they will be temporarily relocated

Readers of CambridgeshireLive have been voicing their opinions regarding the council’s proposals for the market and the ambiguity surrounding future developments.

Traders at Cambridge Market say they have been left in a state of uncertainty as they await a temporary relocation following the approval of refurbishment plans. Cambridge City Council’s planning committee voted in favour of a multi-million pound redevelopment of the market square at the beginning of this month.

The council stated it was “committed” to maintaining the market, which has been in operation since the Middle Ages, but traders remain in the dark about their temporary location.

The council confirmed it had lodged a planning application last week for temporary stalls to be erected on several neighbouring streets, with a decision anticipated in November. These include King’s Parade, St Mary’s Passage, Petty Cury and Sidney Street, with additional stalls available on Fisher Square and Sussex Street during peak trading times.

One reader, Riccy said: “Surely these market traders didn’t think the council were going to do anything for them, did they? The council can’t even sort themselves out.”

Sinnikal says: “Stalls around both sides and the back of the church should suffice.”

Bogboy suggests: “The beginning of the end. And good riddance.”

Oopsiblewoff asks: “Can’t we have a theme park instead? Maybe a roller coaster that goes over King’s College. It should be solar powered.”

Imner questions: “What does the council propose to do? Cover it over? Provide new facilities? Replace the cobbles for ‘safety concerns’, or just make a mess of the whole thing and try to lose most of the stalls? I go for the latter, nasty, dirty place! Not! And when the council have finished concreting it all over (cobbles are so dangerous), not! The rents will double, market traders will go elsewhere, and the people of Cambridge will lose out, as will the occasional visitors, and the city will be soulless! BUT nice, clean, and tidy!

Thebo33man feels: “Not needed. Doesn’t need changing or upgrading. Leave it as it is.”

Nunu11 says: “It’s run since the Middle Ages, bit of a clue there, if it’s not broken, don’t fix it.”

Timbiscuit believes: “The betrayal by this council on a vanity project is awful. In a few years’ time, they should be held accountable when it has proven to be a failure.”

Microsoft boss warns of AI creating own ‘silicon species’ to compete with humans

Published

on

Mustafa Suleyman, the head of Microsoft AI, said on Thursday that developing autonomous AI risks creating a ¿a new silicon species which will no doubt compete with us for resources¿

Labour was last night urged to get a grip on AI after a tech boss warned a ‘silicon species’ could develop to rival humans.

In yet another warning of AI’s threat to humanity, Mustafa Suleyman, the head of Microsoft AI, said on Thursday that developing autonomous AI risks creating a ‘a new silicon species which will no doubt compete with us for resources’.

Speaking on the BBC‘s Today programme, Mr Suleyman said: ‘If we all create AIs that are able to act autonomously, that can define their own objectives, that can earn money, that can own assets, that could run businesses, we’re essentially seeding a new silicon species which will no doubt compete with us for resources – no matter how much it cares about humanity and loves us – which I think is Anthropic’s intention.’

He added Anthropic’s aim is ‘mistaken and misguided’.

Mr Suleyman is the latest AI employee to sound the alarm over the existential dangers posed by AI.

And on Wednesday OpenAI revealed six new incidents where AI had attempted to conceal information from its human tester or acted against instruction.

In a rare interview on the issue, AI minister Kanishka Narayan said this week that AI could have ‘profound consequences’ for Britain’s national security.

He added that ministers were prepared to introduce regulations and legislation if necessary, and invest in Britain’s cyber-defence.

But the Government was last night told to act more urgently to protect Britons from AI harms.

Former armed forces minister Al Carns urged ministers to ‘move fast’ by ‘ensuring that any company in the UK has sufficient guardrails prior to using AI agents’.

He told the Daily Mail: ‘The UK needs to mitigate the risk and seize the opportunity from AI. This is by becoming the safest place to use AI agents, enhancing everything from economic growth to daily life, whilst simultaneously becoming the world leader in AI assurance (the process of evaluating whether systems are safe).’

Labour MP and chair of Parliament’s All-Party Parliamentary Group on AI Allison Gardner pushed Government ‘to convene real experts and start planning an AI bill’.

Ministers ‘also need to empower the AI Assurance Consortium that was set up last month and commit to creating a strong AI assurance sector,’ she said.

Dr. Janet Bastiman, chief data scientist at British company Napier AI, said: ‘Shared principles are a useful starting point, but ministers need to explain how those principles will translate into enforceable safeguards, who will be responsible and when businesses can expect clarity.’

Chair of Parliament’s science and technology committee Chi Onwurah meanwhile told Mr Suleyman to explain how Microsoft would work with governments to keep AI safe.

She said: ‘The boss of Microsoft is right to raise concerns about uncontrolled AI and Big Tech’s obsession with superhuman and silicon super powers, and I welcome his desire to set limits.

‘But he might be more credible if he were setting out how Microsoft would work with governments and other tech firms to keep AI safe and secure in measurable and verifiable ways people can trust.

‘Microsoft has been bundling AI in with its products for over a year now. Surely Microsoft should already be ensuring it is safe?’

Both Microsoft and Anthropic did not respond to a request for comment.
