Marvel has mostly focused on TV shows this year, but the franchise made a splash on the big screen with the debut of Spider-Man: Brand New Day. The fourth Tom Holland solo Spider-Man movie has earned well over $2 billion at the global box office, and it’s already one of the highest-grossing movies of all time with more left to give. Marvel will seek continued box office success later this year with the premiere of Avengers: Doomsday, which opens in theaters on December 18, the same day as Dune: Part Three. Marvel opened the year with the highly popular TV show, Wonder Man, which was initially renewed for a second season before Marvel later changed its mind and decided that it wouldn’t come back. This news came out around the same time that the Blade movie was officially canceled as well.
Spider-Man now holds the title as Marvel’s most successful movie franchise, discounting the Avengers titles, which consistently turn in billions at the box office. Another wildly successful franchise to blossom under Marvel, mostly during the Infinity Saga, was the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy. Written and directed by James Gunn, who has now taken full creative control at DC and even directed movies like Superman and Man of Tomorrow, all three Guardians movies are widely loved and celebrated by fans, despite there not being much familiarity with the characters before they were introduced in the MCU. Gunn took the loveable band of space misfits and, through three epic space operas, turned them into some of the MCU’s most popular characters. All three Guardians films are streaming on Disney Plus, along with the rest of the best MCU movies, where they’ve recently surged into the global top 10.
Is Marvel Making Another ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ Movie?
Now that James Gunn is working at DC on other movies, it’s unlikely that Marvel will pursue making another Guardians of the Galaxy solo movie. This doesn’t mean that the characters from the Guardians franchise can’t appear in other projects, though — it’s heavily speculated that Chris Pratt will reprise his role as Star-Lord later this year in Avengers: Doomsday, but this has yet to be confirmed. Marvel left things pretty open-ended at the conclusion of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, so even if the characters don’t come back, their ending is still satisfying.
