Yorkshire Dales village offers a true taste of rural England

Reeth, on the edge of the Dales near Richmond, is said to offers visitors a “true taste of rural England”.

It’s also home to a traditional pub which has been around since the late 1600s.

Visit North Yorkshire comments: “The village is surrounded by the stunning landscape of Upper Swaledale known for its picture postcard views of field barns and dry-stone walls.

“The nearby hay meadows are a burst of colour in the summer months when the wildflowers are in full bloom.”

Meanwhile, Welcome to Yorkshire reveals: “One of the most appealing aspects of Reeth is its stunning natural surroundings.

“The village is surrounded by rolling hills, lush green fields, and babbling brooks, making it an ideal location for hiking, cycling, and other outdoor activities.

“Visitors can explore the nearby lead mining ruins to learn about the area’s fascinating history, or simply relax in one of the village’s cosy pubs and enjoy a pint of locally brewed ale.”

The Yorkshire Dales website agrees: “This area is known for its iconic farming landscape of field barns and drystone walls amidst beautiful hay meadows.

“Reeth welcomes locals and visitors and has several excellent cafés, pubs and tea rooms.

“Dating to 1680, long before the lead miners came, the Black Bull Inn used to serve travellers and farmers and is still trading today.

“The Buck Hotel was a coaching inn dating back to 1780. For a real treat, check out The Burgoyne Hotel which offers fine dining and afternoon teas.”

The Black Bull Inn, which is the village’s “oldest” surviving inn – it’s a family-run pub serving fresh homemade food, real fires and live music.

Just some of the evening meals available on the 2025 winter menu include Whitby scampi, homemade curry, classic bull burger, and sausage and mash.

On Tripadvisor, The Black Bull Inn has a 4.1/5 rating based on more than 100 reviews.

A recent customer posted: “This is a cosy and welcoming pub with a roaring fire, pool table and dart board, a great place to spend an evening with friends. We were staying in Reeth for a few nights and spent a couple of evenings here.

“We ate here too, in the restaurant and it was lovely, very nice food, plenty of choice. The staff are very friendly and welcoming.”

Another commented: “Just had a fantastic meal and evening. The home made steak and Ale suet pudding was a nice option and tasted great. The misses had fish and chips and it was really tasty with proper home made chips. They also do a separate gluten free , vegan and vegetarian menu. The staff where great and very helpful , Dale, Abbie and Carole shout out. We will be back.”
