UFC Edmonton fighters react positively, indifferently to rule changes

EDMONTON, Alberta, Canada – Two new rules will make their UFC debut Saturday at Rogers Place as the Association of Boxing Commissions and Combative Sports (ABC) voted this past July to implement them beginning Nov. 1.

For the first time in the history of the Unified Rules of MMA, 12-6 elbows will be allowed at UFC Fight Night 246. Additionally, a “grounded fighter” is redefined as an athlete who has any part of their body besides their hands or feet on the ground.

Wednesday, MMA Junkie asked many of the event’s top participants for their thoughts on the changes from the perspective of a fighter.

Kamaru Usman: BMF title ‘hypothetical’ that UFC made up ‘because of me’

Kamaru Usman: BMF title ‘hypothetical’ that UFC made up ‘because of me’

Kamaru Usman believes when the story of the BMF title is being told, his name should be part of the narrative.

Usman discussed the BMF title on his podcast with Henry Cejudo, and asked fans why they hold the championship — currently held by Max Holloway — in such high regard.

“Guys, why are we talking about it like this is a real title? It’s not,” Usman said on Pound 4 Pound. “This was a hypothetical that was made up because of me. It was made up because of me.”

The former welterweight champion says that when the BMF belt was introduced to the world at UFC 244, the original fight that the UFC brought to the table was Usman vs. Colby Covington. But the fight didn’t come together — which led to UFC CEO Dana White creating the BMF title that Nate Diaz called for in a callout for Jorge Masvidal, who had recently knocked out Ben Askren in record time at UFC 239 in July 2019.

When asked to elaborate by Cejudo, Usman says history would be different if he had defended his welterweight title against Covington that night in November 2019.

“Covington [and I] were supposed to fight at MSG, New York,” Usman explained. “The fight didn’t happen. They needed a fight to headline that card, they needed something with some steam. This is MSG, you can’t just put any fight card at MSG. You’ve got to come correct when you go to MSG. …

“What’s the hottest ticket out there? Jorge ‘Gambred’ Masvidal — the hottest thing smoking. Then, of course, you have Nate Diaz with his mystique that he always carries. … Nate Diaz had already called out Masvidal after his previous fight. … Dana jumps on, how do we promote this fight? Let’s create this, all right. It’s called the baddest mother f’er belt. C’mon, are you serious?”

Masvidal would win the fight via doctor’s stoppage TKO, and was awarded the BMF title by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.

Erin Blanchfield treating first loss ‘like kids would’

Erin Blanchfield treating first loss ‘like kids would’

EDMONTON, Alberta, Canada – Erin Blanchfield hasn’t experienced loss too much as a professional mixed martial artist, but she’s still familiar with it.

At UFC Fight Night 246 on Saturday, Blanchfield (12-2 MMA, 6-1 UFC) aims to bounce back from a largely one-sided March unanimous decision defeat to Manon Fiorot. The loss was the first noncontroversial one of her pro career.

“Losing always sucks and it takes a little getting over,” Blanchfield told MMA Junkie and other reporters at a pre-fight news conference Wednesday. “I didn’t harp on it for too long. I just let my body heal from the fight and then I was back to training. Yeah, I feel like me and my coaches watched over it. We found things we wanted to improve on, my distance management and my striking and my wrestling and everything as I always do. So I kind of focused on that.”

Blanchfield, 25, built the reputation as a combat sports prodigy from her early grappling successes to her quick rise through the UFC ranks. While outsiders might have seen the loss as a window for self-doubt to rear its ugly head, Blanchfield has removed all emotion from the defeat and remains firm in putting everything in relative perspective.

“I think it’s just from competing my whole life,” Blanchfield said. “I’ve grown up competing since I was eight years old. You win a lot, you lose a lot. It’s something that you always have to learn from and grow from, not take it too hard, not harp on it too much. I think people really get down on themselves.

“Honestly, it’s just a sport at the end of the day and you have to treat it like kids would. You just get up and get back to training and focus on the things you need to improve on. I think I had a lot of time after that fight to do that and time to just train, not have a fight, and then finally have a fight and have a camp and feel really good.”

Even with the setback, Blanchfield has an opportunity to reaffirm her place as a potential future title challenger when she faces former champion Rose Namajunas (13-6 MMA, 11-5 UFC) in Saturday’s co-main event at Rogers Place.

“I think Manon (Fiorot) is definitely getting the title next and I think having a really good performance Saturday, like getting a finish over Rose definitely puts me in that title picture next,” Blanchfield said.”

Ailin Perez returns against Karol Rosa at UFC 311

The first UFC pay-per-view of 2025 features a Brazil vs. Argentina bantamweight clash when Karol Rosa takes on Ailin Perez on Jan. 18. Both fighters announced the matchup on social media following a report by Gaston Reyno.

UFC 311 is rumored for Los Angeles, but the company has yet to officially announce the exact location and its headlining attraction.

Rosa (18-6) has gone 1-1 since returning to her original weight class at 135 pounds, defeating Pannie Kianzad this past August to bounce back from a Fight of the Night loss against Irene Aldana.

The Brazilian, who turns 30 years old just weeks before the fight, holds wins over the likes of Yana Santos, Lina Lansberg and former title contender Bethe Correia throughout her 7-3 octagon career.

Perez (11-2) is looking to extend her winning streak to five after a perfect career so far as a UFC bantamweight. “Fiona” lost a 135-pound clash to Stephanie Egger in her octagon debut, but then cut back down to bantamweight to beat Ashlee Evans-Smith, Lucie Pudilova, Joselyne Edwards and Darya Zheleznyakova.
