Zoe Ball sends support to Lauren Laverne and Jamie Theakston after pair revealed cancer diagnoses

Zoe Ball has sent messages of support to her radio colleagues Lauren Laverne and Jamie Theakston after the pair revealed their cancer diagnoses.

The BBC Radio 2 host returned to her breakfast show on Monday after taking a six-week leave of absence following the death of her mother, Julia Peckham, who died in April.

During Ball’s absence during the summer, two of her radio colleagues publicly revealed their cancer diagnoses.

In August, Desert Island Discs and BBC 6 Music presenter Laverne revealed she been diagnosed with an undisclosed form of cancer but said she was “expected to make a full recovery”. Last week, Heart Radio presenter Theakston told fans that his doctors had detected Stage 1 laryngeal cancer after they performed an operation on his vocal chords. He said his prognosis looks “positive”.

Returning to Radio 2 on Monday morning (23 September), Ball told listeners that their messages of support to her “meant the world”.

She added: “I must say, while we are sending some love, our breakfast friends Lauren Laverne, our mate at 6 Music is currently going through some cancer treatment. She’s doing OK but I just want to send my love out to her.”

She also said that Heart Radio Breakfast’s Theakston, who she worked on the BBC children’s TV show Live & Kicking with, was “going to be OK and he’s doing well”.

“Sending so much love to them,” Ball added.

Ball welcomed back listeners on Monday morning (23 September) with her lively introduction, telling them, “It’s me Zoe, the happy wanderer, I’ve wandered back” before asking if they enjoyed their “Brat summer”.

She said: “Morning, gorgeous people – it’s me Zoe the happy wanderer. I’ve wandered back. How was your Brat summer? Was it marvellous?

“We did that in the Nineties – it was called something different then. I hope you’ve been enjoying some of the gorgeous sunsets over the last few weeks. It’s a tad soggy our end this morning. Take it easy out on the road.”

Ball’s mother, Peckham, had been diagnosed with advanced pancreatic cancer earlier this year. Ball announced her mother’s death in April, having previously taken time away from the show to care for her mother, who had been receiving care at a hospice.

Gaby Roslin and Scott Mills stepped in for Ball, with the presenter making a temporary four-day return on 8 August before taking several weeks off.

Announcing Peckham’s death in April, Roslin said on air: “It’s no secret Zoe has been off for a little while looking after her mum, Julia.”

“Very sadly, Julia lost her fight yesterday and we’re all obviously sending so much love to Zoe and the whole family,” Roslin continued.

“It’s a horrible, awful time – and I know so many of you have been through this, loving a parent and a loved one, and I think the one thing I’d like to pass on is: grief has no rule. There are no rules about this at all.”

At the time, Ball shared a message on social media thanking her mother for teaching her “how to love unconditionally” and that “laughter is the greatest of gifts”.

Strictly Come Dancing 2024 ratings for first live show revealed with huge ‘drop’

Strictly Come Dancing 2024 ratings for first live show revealed with huge ‘drop’

Strictly Come Dancing’s first live show of the series was watched by a million fewer viewers compared to last year, viewing figures have indicated.

According to reports, overnight TV ratings suggest that 6.4 million viewers tuned in to watch Saturday night’s first live show of the series, which is down from the 7.3 million viewers who watched the first live show of 2023. The Independent has contacted the BBC for comment.

Viewing figures have fluctuated over the years, and an increasing number of people watch on BBC iPlayer or catch-up TV, which are not captured in overnight data. It’s expected that the total number of viewers will increase as more people catch up.

This year’s figures follow a trend from last week’s launch episode, when even fewer viewers (5.5 million) tuned in to watch the show’s pre-recorded on 14 September compared to last year’s launch (6.2 million viewers).

The series has seen a huge drop compared to previous years, like in 2020 when 10.2 million viewers watched the first live show of the series.

During Saturday night’s show, comedian Chris McCausland, the show’s first blind contestant, took to the dance floor to perform a routine to “Twist and Shout” with his partner Dianne Buswell. Strictly’s judges, Craig Revel Horwood, Motsi Mabuse, Shirley Ballas and Anton Du Beke, were in awe of what McCausland had achieved and scored the performance 23 out of 40 points.

Meanwhile, professional Amy Dowden received a standing ovation when she returned to the dancefloor after taking a year off from the show to undergo treatment for cancer.

Former Arsenal and England player Paul Merson paid homage to his sport by performing the peculiar combination of an American smooth to the popular football chant song “Vindaloo” by Fat Les on Saturday night. While the judges said the performance was “special”, viewers at home criticised the song choice for making Merson the “laughing stock” of the season.

Anton Du Beke praised Merson’s partner Karen Hauer for her “genius choreography” that made the most of the unusual song and dance pairing on Saturday night.

Craig Revel Horwood told Merson he was “pigeon-toed and flat footed” and Motsi Mabuse said she “couldn’t recognise” the dance as an American smooth.

The ex-footballer received a score of 17 out of a possible 40 points from the Strictly judges. He will dance again next weekend when public voting – and the first elimination of the series – begins.

Joan Collins takes swipe at Keir Starmer over free clothing controversy

Joan Collins takes swipe at Keir Starmer over free clothing controversy

Hollywood star Joan Collins took a cheeky swipe at Keir Starmer’s shopping habits during an episode of Loose Women on Monday (23 September).

The prime minister and Labour leader has come under fire in recent days over a decision to accept donations of expensive clothing from prominent and wealthy Labour donor, Lord Waheed Alli.

Items included tens of thousands of pounds of clothing for him and his wife Victoria, as well as multiple pairs of expensive spectacles.

Collins, 91, made the dig while discussing her shopping habits during her time starring as Alexis Carrington Colby in Dynasty.

“Of course I do like shopping so I spent a lot of time in Saks, and Neimans,” she told Ruth Langsford and her co-hosts.

“You’d go in and you’d get a shopper, a personal shopper, and you’d go ‘I’ll have that and that and that and that’. A bit like our prime minister.”

There was an audible reaction from the audience as laughter and “Oooh” rang out.

Starmer has vowed not to accept any further donations of clothing.

Speaking further about her fashion choices on the programme, which remains one of the most successful of all time, Collins said she kept a lot of the costume jewellery that her scheming character wore on the show.

“I cannot believe they put me in such terrible hats,” she said.

The actor, also a bestselling author who has sold over 50 million copies of her work across the world, dished the dirt on the real dynamics behind the scenes.

“I love John James who played Jeff Colby, Emma Samms who played my daughter, and Stephanie Beecham and Kate O’Mara,” she said.

“But some of the others we didn’t get along so well.”

She added that the work was very difficult, “Basically, it was just really a grind. We never had any time off, weekends were spent doing publicity. I think I must have done 500 magazine covers and layouts while I was doing it.”

Meanwhile, earlier this week Sir Keir defended accepting free tickets to watch his beloved Arsenal football club. In an interview with Sky News, he said: “Security advice says I can’t go into the stands as it would cost the taxpayers a fortune, so I’ve been offered tickets where it’s more secure and we don’t have to use taxpayers money on additional security.”
