Pictures as crowds turnout for Darlington Christmas lights switch-on
The free event transformed the square into a hub of entertainment, music and celebration as hundreds flocked to the town centre.
The evening featured festive performances on the main stage which included live music as well as pantomime skits from Darlington Hippodrome’s production of Goldilocks and the Three Bears.
Families enjoyed dancing along with the characters before counting down to the big switch-on.
Shortly before 5.30pm, Santa Claus in his sleigh made his way through the crowd waving and high fiving youngsters as he passed.
He quickly joined Hits Radio DJs Steve and Karen on stage in anticipation for the light switch-on.
At 5.30pm, families counted down from ten until the town’s Christmas lights were switched on, illuminating the square and surrounding streets.
A short firework display followed, lighting up the night sky and adding to the festive atmosphere.
The switch-on marked the start of a full programme of festive activities taking place across the town. Market Square and nearby streets are now littered with decorative lights, while shopfronts are displaying seasonal windows.
This year’s light switch on was supported by Costa Coffee in Darlington and Taylor Wimpey.
Clare O’Toole, Store manager of Costa Coffee in Darlington previously said: “Christmas is all about those little moments that bring us together, and we’re proud to support an event that celebrates just that.
