Al-Ahli centre-forward Ivan Toney scored the match-winning penalty in his side’s 2-1 victory over Al-Taawoun and the Englishman infuriated his opponents by mocking the opposition goalkeeper, Mailson, with his viral celebration.

Toney, 29 and from Northampton, moved from Brentford in the Premier League to Saudi Arabia in the summer of 2024 after a series of teams were interested in his signature. The prospect of remaining on English soil was reportedly on the table – but he was enticed by the ever-growing riches of the Middle East instead.

Thanks to his goal-getting exploits, the likes of Manchester United and Chelsea were among those in the frame to secure his signature. Since his move a year-and-a-half ago, the seven-cap England international has plundered 60 goal contributions (48 goals and 12 assists) in 68 outings – and his latest actions have gone viral.

Ivan Toney Sparks Melee in Saudi Pro League Encounter With Post-Penalty Antics

Toney, widely regarded as one of the best penalty takers in the history of the Premier League, stepped up from the spot to convert in the 104th minute of their Saudi Pro League encounter. That takes his tally to ten goals in 13 league encounters since 2025/26 got underway.

Mailson of Al-Taawoun attempted to put him off with a series of distracting gestures in an attempt to shake the ex-Newcastle United striker off his rhythm. He continually pointed to the bottom-left corner of the goal, suggesting that he was going to dive that way.

Despite the 29-year-old stopper’s antics at the Alinma Bank Stadium, Toney’s carried out his typical penalty-taking routine – he waited for a split second to commit the goalkeeper before placing the ball exactly where he had been pointing.

The potent marksman, who has played for the likes of Wigan Athletic, Scunthorpe United and Peterborough United in his career, coolly stepped up to convert his effort from 12 yards out.

And his post-penalty celebration infuriated the Al-Taawoun’s players: he ran into the net and repeatedly pointed to the spot where he had slotted the ball. A clash between the two sets of players ensued, and three furious opponents leapt towards Toney before being restrained by two Al-Ahli players.

Since moving to Al-Ahli from Brentford in August 2024, Toney has continued to be a menace in front of goal – especially from the spot kick – and helped his side win the AFC Champions League Elite in his maiden campaign.

Toney will be looking to utilise his firepower to shoot for the stars this season, too. His latest strike, which is definitely his most viral in an Al-Ahli shirt so far, has shot them up to fourth in the Saudi Pro League table – with 31 points in 14 outings. Al-Taawoun (third) and Al-Nassr (second) are also on the same points tally.

Beyond Harry Kane and Ollie Watkins, England have a shortage of international-level centre-forwards at their disposal – and if the aforementioned duo were to get injured, Thomas Tuchel‘s men could find themselves in hot water. Could Toney be the perfect antidote as the Three Lions’ third-choice striker?

Former Brentford boss Thomas Frank, who possessed the brilliance of the striker in west London, claimed that Toney was the best penalty taker in the world during his Premier League spell. “I have said many times he is the best penalty taker in the world, and hopefully I won’t get bored (of) saying it,” he claimed.

“England have been in a few penalty shootouts and if they want to win one, they need to pick Ivan.”

Despite his hot goalscoring form, Toney has not played for his country since a two-minute cameo in a 3-1 friendly defeat against Senegal back in June 2025 – but a return to the Premier League this January, with Everton and Liverpool reportedly among those interested in his services, could improve his chances of booking a spot on the plane.
