Man Utd’s newly appointed head coach Michael Carrick has explained his team selection ahead of the derby.

Michael Carrick hopes Benjamin Sesko and Matheus Cunha can make an impact off the bench in Manchester United’s Premier League clash with Manchester City today. Carrick has made five changes following United’s defeat to Brighton in the FA Cup last weekend.

Carrick will oversee his first game in charge since his appointment as head coach on Tuesday against Manchester City, who head into the game on the back of a 2-0 win against Newcastle. Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw, Casemiro, Amad and Bryan Mbeumo have been recalled to the starting team. Carrick has picked a striker-less attack, selecting Amad, Mbeumo and Patrick Dorgu to start against City.

Sesko has scored three goals in his last two matches but has been dropped to the bench, while Cunha losing his place was another talking point when the teams were confirmed.

Carrick was asked by Gary Neville on Sky Sports why the pair have been dropped and said: “We’ve got a good squad of players, that’s something that we’ve got to decide on. There was always going to be players disappointed not to start.

“But finishing the game is even more important these days. They’ve got huge talent. It’s not personal at all. I’m a big fan of both boys and they’ll make a big difference for us.”

Kobbie Mainoo makes his first start of the Premier League season. “Kobbie is a fantastic player, he’s got huge talent and ability. A big thing for me is he’s played in some huge occasions,” said Carrick.

“Being able to cope with the expectation, he’s played with the national team so that element goes with it and I’m looking forward to seeing him thrive.”
