A car has burst into flames near Edinburgh Airport this evening leaving drivers horrified. It is understood the blaze erupted around 4.45pm on the M9 Westbound near Newbridge on Saturday, January 17.

Emergency services, including Police Scotland and the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS), are currently at the scene. Footage taken at the crash site shows hot, angry, orange flames ripping through the vehicle while thick, black plumes of smoke shoot into the sky. The car involved is believed to be a Jaguar, according to Edinburgh Live.

A short video appears to show a blue-police car pulled to the side of the road with firefighters assess the scene. Scottish Fire and Rescue confirmed they are in attendance as workers fight to put out the roaring flames.

Two fire appliances were sent to put to fight the inferno. It is not yet known if anyone has been hurt or taken to hospital as a result of the incident. It also remains unclear how many people – if any – were involved.

Traffic Scotland confirmed on X, previously Twitter, that the M9 is closed westbound at Junction 1 due to the situation. Drivers are urged to use caution on approach and expect delays. Cops are managing traffic.

A SFRS spokesperson said: “We were made aware at 4.46pm of a car fire on the M9 westbound. Two appliances were dispatched to the scene and we are still in attendance.”

Police Scotland has been approached for further comment.
