‘Tracker’ Just Proved the Action Procedural Needs To Change Its Format 3 Seasons In
Editor’s note: The following contains spoilers for Tracker Season 3 Episode 10.With Tracker‘s long-anticipated return in “The Fallout,” the midseason premiere concludes the tale that started a few months ago, before the network hit went on hiatus. The two-parter delves into a complicated conspiracy that involves dirty cops, mafia money, and love-lorn hitmen, all culminating in a climax that Colter Shaw (Justin Hartley) barely gets out of alive. It’s a thrilling change of pace for the popular CBS drama, one that proves the two-part story structure ought to become commonplace.
‘Tracker’ Season 3 Has Proven That Occasional Two-Parters Work Like Gold
After barely surviving the gunshot and car wreck from “Good Trouble,” Colter teams up with Billie Matalon (Sofia Pernas) in “The Fallout” to uncover the truth about those trying to cover up a Tacoma-based task force that went rogue — naturally, the whole thing goes all the way to the top. While Tracker has certainly leaned into the art of the standalone, case-of-the-week style episodes that thrive best on network television (in fact, it’s one of the best things about the show), this two-parter, not unlike the season premiere, proves that the show has the chance to get even better with extended stories like these.
Combined, these two installments equal the runtime of a 90-minute action movie, and that style works wonders on a show like Tracker, which frankly could even lean into the action a bit more. The two-part structure allows viewers to better invest in the show’s supporting characters (especially newcomers) and makes the plot more believable. We see this especially in the case of the two-part Season 3 premiere, which needed a double-feature to unpack the complexity of “The Process” plotline. In truth, it could have easily extended beyond just two episodes.

It’s no secret that some episodes of Tracker can feel like a bit of a stretch at times. When things wrap up so easily without any major consequences, it breaks the immersive experience and risks coming off a bit contrived. Part of that could be that certain plotlines are underdeveloped, so Randy (Chris Lee) has to come in at the eleventh hour to connect the final dots and send Colter to the inevitable showdown. While there are certainly times when this works, relying too much on thin evidence and guesswork could easily become a crutch. However, by extending more episodes into two-part adventures, Tracker can raise the stakes, introduce more complex or recurring characters, and tell more engaging stories that don’t feel like we’re only skimming the surface of their narrative potential. Season 2’s “Ontological Shock” comes to mind, as Colter and Russell’s (Jensen Ackles) investigation into a government conspiracy potentially involving UFOs easily deserved more time to unpack — especially given the government’s ties to their father.
‘Tracker’ Should Deviate From the Typical Standalone Format From Time to Time
Two-part episodes also give the audience more time with fan favorites like Russell Shaw and John Keaton (Brent Sexton). They can rip the audience out of their false sense of network TV security by tossing these characters into more imminent danger, resulting in powerful cliffhangers and dangerous enemies that may hold more personal grudges — no wonder we were worried that Tracker was about to kill off Keaton. While small recurring plotlines like “The Teacher” arc in Season 2 are great ways to thread together narrative interest and tension, straight-up multipart episodes are better because they don’t rely on “end of episode” revelations, but give the characters time to flesh out the latest mystery on-screen.
Of course, we’re not saying that Tracker should solely rely on the two-part formula. Again, one of the best things about the show is that it isn’t heavily serialized. In many ways, it’s a time capsule of what episodic network television could be, and as the show keeps getting better, it only further encourages us that the standalone (or “filler”) episode may not be a lost art the way many of us feared. But if Season 3 has proven anything so far, it’s that this show has the ability to dive into these more detailed stories and pay them off in earnest (in some ways, echoing the more detailed nature of the books themselves). In the end, extending episodes to two (or even three if Tracker were bold enough) parts without serializing the production at large is a great way to push the boundaries of network television. That’s something we can certainly get behind.

Apple TV’s Most Colossal Sci-Fi Series Gets Beaten By Tense 2-Part Idris Elba Thriller
On Apple TV, competition is always strong as the streaming service releases new TV shows and episodes. The streaming platform has built a robust library of thrillers and sci-fi dramas, with each week bringing new installments of their hit shows. Monarch: Legacy of Monsters returned for Season 2 last week on Friday, and the Monsterverse series immediately shot to the top of Apple TV’s top TV shows. The much-awaited season returned with an explosive season premiere that cements Monarch: Legacy of Monsters as the most ambitious sci-fi drama on the streamer. The series is set in the Monsterverse, which has been successful on the big screen but has never quite been attempted on the small screen.
At the same time, the second season of the hit crime thriller Hijack was wrapping up, with the season finale released this Wednesday. The new episode has helped Hijack dethrone Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, claiming the top spot this week according to FlixPatrol. The ranking could change when Episode 2 of the Anna Sawai-led drama debuts on the service this Friday. In the March 6 episode titled “Resonance,” Lee (Wyatt Russell) and Keiko (Mari Yamamoto) investigate a secretive village with a cult devoted to a mysterious creature while Cate (Sawai) crosses paths with a deadly stowaway. Hijack Season 2 was largely well-received by critics but did not receive the same acclaim among viewers. The show was initially conceptualized as a limited series but was renewed after it became a hit. With Season 2 behind the rearview mirror, Season 3 might also be in the running, according to writer Jim Field Smith.

Will ‘Hijack’ Return for Season 3?
Apple TV has not renewed the show for Season 3, but Field Smith hinted in an interview with Variety that Hijack could return if the right idea materialized. “I think more like, is there more story for Sam? It’s not so much like, ‘Oh, could we do it again?’ Because, of course, you can do it again. Do I want to do it again, that’s a different conversation. Right now, I’ve literally just delivered this season,” Field Smith said. He added:
“If Apple decides they want another bite of the Hijack cherry, the question I will always ask is, what story is there for Sam? Not, where can we do it, but why? Of course, yeah, it could be on a boat. It could be on an e-bike, it could be in the back of a limo, it could be, you know, a submarine. Or it could transcend the Hijack format and it could move into a different arena. But that’s what I mean. The precinct is kind of irrelevant. It’s more about ‘Where could Sam go?’”

What To Know About Britney Spears’ Arrest
As mentioned, the California Highway Patrol arrested Britney Spears around 9:30 p.m. in Ventura County and booked her around 3 a.m. At around 6 a.m. on Thursday, officials reportedly released the pop star, according to the sheriff’s office records and TMZ. There are no other details about the arrest and a mugshot has not been released. She is scheduled to appear in court on May 4.
Spears Granted Restraining Order Ahead Of Arrest
Britney’s arrest follows a legal win. According to TMZ, a California court granted the singer a permanent restraining order against a 51-year-old man named Donald. Court docs claim he’s been harassing Britney Spears online since 2013, making seemingly threatening posts like “bullet hole heart.” Also, last year, Donald was reportedly arrested for trespassing after popping up at her property. Donald was allegedly “shaking” and smoking a cigarette when cops pulled up after a 911 call from the singer’s security guard. The arrest report allegedly stated that Donald was behaving oddly and “made several incoherent comments.”
Now, the restraining order requires Donald to stay at least 100 yards away from Britney Spears at all times. The order is in place until 2030, per TMZ. Britney Spears said in the court docs that she doesn’t personally know Donald or have a relationship with him. He, however, reportedly has a criminal history that includes burglary and harassment charges, convictions of criminal trespass aggravated assault and accusations of cyberbullying.

Alongside the talented singers of American Idol and the nail-biting betrayals of Survivor, another show dominated early-2000s television: America’s Next Top Model. Decades before social media existed, aspiring models had little access to breaking into the cutthroat modeling industry. It’s even harder when the biggest modeling hotspots are often limited to major cities like New York and Los Angeles. That is, unless supermodel Tyra Banks had something to say about it.
As an underdog herself, Banks knew firsthand how hard it was to make a viable career out of modeling. America’s Next Top Model thus became her passion project — some would argue a little too passionate. On the one hand, Banks’ reality show gave women from all walks of life the chance not only to learn how to model, but also to compete for a magazine feature and a contract. On the other hand, the project slowly evolved into the stuff of nightmares for these once bright-eyed contestants — most are explored in Netflix’s latest docuseries, Reality Check: Inside America’s Next Top Model.

Appearing in Reality Check: Inside America’s Next Top Model without editorial control over how the docuseries portrays her, Banks seems poised to defend the show’s legacy. Early on, she frames ANTM as an educational platform designed to break down stereotypes surrounding the modeling industry. At a time when models were frowned upon for being “snobby” or “unintelligent,” Banks wanted to challenge that image by revealing the hard work required behind the scenes. Drawing from her own experience as a Black model often overlooked early in her career, she envisioned ANTM as a doorway for aspiring talent. Yet, as ratings soared and millions tuned in, the show’s popularity appeared to eclipse its original mission.
Following the success of its first season, ANTM quickly became the talk of reality TV, pulling in an average of five to six million viewers per episode at its peak. Due to popular demand, the show began releasing two cycles — essentially two seasons — per year. However, growing demand also meant increasing supply. As a producer, Banks felt it was her job to deliver more and more to keep the show relevant. In the process, education turned into entertainment, and models were put through the wringer with increasingly outrageous challenges. These included getting knocked off by a massive pendulum on the runway, posing as homeless people, and shooting with cockroaches. The irony is, as former contestants point out, these concepts aren’t even practices used by real fashion publications.
Tyra Banks Fails to Take Accountability for the Harm She Caused to Contestants and Fellow Judges
Despite the long list of atrocities mentioned in Reality Check, Banks doesn’t seem to take accountability for what happened. Rather than empathizing with the victims, she positions herself as a savior. Cycle 6 winner Dani Evans struggled to find legitimate modeling work due to the stigma surrounding ANTM within the industry. Instead of stepping in to help, Banks called Evans to apologize for doing “nothing” after learning that “there were certain doors that [Evans] couldn’t get into because [she] did Top Model.” However, Banks also claimed that she “always rode the fence” with Evans — a remark the former contestant finds offensive.
Other times, Banks positions herself as a fellow victim. In 2012, all three of ANTM‘s staple judges — Jay Manuel, Miss J. Alexander, and Nigel Barker — were let go. In Reality Check, Manuel recalls initially wanting to step back to focus on his own endeavors, only for Banks to ghost him and later send an email saying, “I am disappointed.” Although Manuel stayed for ten more cycles, he describes the environment as uncomfortable, citing Banks’ passive-aggressive behavior and the stripping of his producer rights. When the judges were ultimately fired, Banks claimed it was the TV heads’ decision, not hers. However, her treatment of Manuel — and failure to visit a hospitalized Miss J — suggests a disconnect between her words and actions.

Ioan Gruffudd Wins Major Courtroom Victory
Actor Ioan Gruffudd secured a significant legal victory when a Los Angeles judge ruled that a domestic violence restraining order against his ex-wife, Alice Evans, will remain in place for another five years.
The decision came after a tense trial in which the court reviewed allegations of harassment and online attacks that the Welsh star said had gone on for years.
The Daily Mail reported that Evans appeared composed as the ruling was delivered, while Gruffudd sat quietly across the courtroom table.

Judge Details Allegations Against Alice Evans
In a lengthy explanation of his ruling, Judge Convey delivered a harsh assessment of Evans’ actions, saying the evidence pointed to a sustained effort to damage Gruffudd and Wallace.
He told the court that Evans had carried out a “concerted, focused, intentional and caustic campaign of denigration” aimed at the couple.
According to the judge, Evans’ conduct crossed the line into intimidation. He said her “threats of force and intimidation….caused Ioan to fear for his and Bianca’s physical safety.”
The judge also said the alleged behavior had broader consequences for the actor’s personal life, describing her “pattern of abuse” as something that isolated Gruffudd from his children.

He further noted that Evans had vowed to “dedicate her life to fighting him” and ruin his career, which the court said threatened Ioan Gruffudd’s ability to provide for his family.
Despite Evans apologizing in court and telling the judge she felt “ashamed and regretful” about her online comments, Convey questioned whether her remorse was genuine.
“Is it true remorse? I am not persuaded. But it is a positive step forward,” the judge said.

Ioan Gruffudd And Alice Evans Divorce Turned Bitter
The courtroom battle is the latest chapter in a deeply contentious split between Gruffudd and Evans, who separated in early 2021 after years of marriage.
Their divorce was finalized in 2023, but legal disputes have continued over finances and their daughters, Ella, 16, and Elsie, 12.
During the trial, the judge highlighted incidents that troubled the court, including one confrontation that allegedly took place in front of the children.
According to the judge, Evans “screamed at Gruffudd at the top of her lungs” and warned him she was going to “Amber Heard” him.

He also pointed to a separate incident involving Wallace’s health, saying Evans publicly disclosed the actress’s multiple sclerosis diagnosis online.
The judge described the conduct as deeply troubling, adding, “This is emotional abuse – this is coercive control.”

Gruffudd’s Family Life At The Center Of The Dispute
Since the separation, Ioan Gruffudd has started a new chapter in his personal life.
The actor married Bianca Wallace in April last year, and the couple welcomed a daughter, Mila, in November.
However, the legal battle with Evans has continued to loom over his family life.
Judge Convey acknowledged that Evans’ online attacks had slowed somewhat over time, but said the improvement was not enough to lift the restraining order.
He explained that her posts have “abated somewhat – it’s not at the same level of violence or hate. But there has not been sufficient showing of responsibility.”
Because of the severity of the case, the judge even considered extending the restraining order permanently.
Instead, he settled on a five-year renewal while issuing a warning to Evans. He said it “is incumbent on Alice to get therapy.”
He also cautioned that violating the order again “could lead to criminal prosecution.”

Despite the tension that filled the courtroom, Judge Convey urged both former spouses to find a way forward for the sake of their children.
He encouraged Evans and Gruffudd to “find a way to co-parent” so the actor could rebuild his relationship with their daughters.
Neither party addressed the media following the ruling. However, Gruffudd’s attorney, Joseph Langlois, spoke briefly about the decision and expressed hope that the situation could improve.
“You have to start somewhere and this is a start for Alice to correct her life,” Langlois told the Daily Mail.
He added that the judge’s comments might serve as an opportunity for change, noting, “The judge gave her some good advice and I’m hopeful going forward that she’ll fix things, that she’ll change and turn her life around.”
