Cause of loud bang heard over New Years in Cambridgeshire confirmed

It was confirmed that a magnet fisher had found a German bomb

If you heard a loud bang over New Years, you might be wondering what it was caused by. Cambridgeshire police were called to Ely near the river on Wednesday, December 31, with reports of an unexploded bomb.

The World War Two bomb had been found by a magnet fisher. The Explosive Ordnance Disposal were called to the area and confirmed it was a German bomb.

The bomb was moved to a field for a controlled explosion for it to be disposed of safely.

A spokesperson for Cambridgeshire Police said: “Starting the new year with a bang. Earlier this month our response officers were called to Ely by a magnet fisher who believed they had found a WW2 bomb.

“EOD arrived and confirmed that it was in fact a German bomb from WW2.

“A kind farmer allowed the teams to use his field for a controlled explosion and the bomb was disposed of safely.”
