Third bird flu outbreak in four weeks for York area

Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 was confirmed at a commercial poultry farm near Elvington and Kexby, close to where the York area’s first outbreak was announced on Christmas Eve.

The three-kilometre protection zone covers both villages and areas in neighbouring Sutton upon Derwent.

A 10-kilometre surveillance zone has also been introduced for York and villages including Stamford Bridge, Dunnington, Bishopthorpe and Wheldrake.

Further east, a similar outbreak is affecting farms to the south of Bridlington, with another surveillance zone in place for Snaith, East Cowick and Rawcliffe, near Goole.

Farmers operating within the Surveillance Zone will need to strictly record the movements of their poultry – keeping them isolated from other birds.

Poultry in the Protection Zone will also be strictly monitored, and those on the premises will be humanely culled, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs has said.
