Country Producer and Steel Guitarist Tommy Detamore Dies at 70, Sunny Sweeney Mourns Him in Texas

Tommy Detamore, a country and Americana record producer and pedal steel guitarist whose work shaped hundreds of albums across more than four decades, died Wednesday at age 70, his wife announced this week.

Sandra Detamore confirmed her husband’s death in an emotional Facebook post, writing that he had passed away on Aug. 5. “It is with a broken heart, I share that my husband of 41 years, Tommy Detamore went home to be with the Lord yesterday,” she wrote. “Tommy was and will always be remembered as a respected musician, producer, collaborator, mentor, and creative force in Country Music. Not to mention the love of my life. His work has and will always leave a lasting mark in the country music community.”

A cause of death has not been made public, though his family described his passing as sudden.

From Virginia Bandstands to the Grand Ole Opry

Detamore was born in Charlottesville, Virginia, on Sept. 8, 1955. He played guitar in local bands throughout high school and college before taking up pedal steel guitar in 1976, studying under steel guitar legend Buddy Charleton. His career took a significant turn in 1981 when he moved to Texas to play steel guitar alongside Darrell McCall. The following year, he joined Moe Bandy’s band, touring extensively across the United States and Europe for seven years and making numerous television and radio appearances, including performances on “The Grand Ole Opry,” “Hee Haw” and “Nashville Now.”

That touring stretch also led to work with other established country artists, including Johnny Bush, Ronnie Milsap and Clay Baker, further building Detamore’s reputation as a sought-after steel guitarist within the traditional country music scene.

Building a Legacy Behind the Studio Glass

In 1991, Detamore opened Cherry Ridge Studio in Floresville, Texas, which became a destination for country and Americana artists from Texas and well beyond. In the later portion of his career, he became best known not as a performer but as an engineer and producer, working behind the scenes to shape the sound of records for artists including Ray Price, Ronnie Milsap, Johnny Bush, Jim Lauderdale, Doug Sahm, the Texas Tornados, Robert Earl Keen, Sunny Sweeney, Dallas Wayne, Raul Malo, Kyle Park and Tony Booth, among many others.

His work extended into the present day. As recently as 2025, Detamore served as master engineer on Ty Myers’ breakout album “The Select,” part of a career that spanned generations of Texas-rooted country and Americana artists. Colleagues described him as a producer who understood that the song always came first, someone who built his reputation the old-fashioned way, working in studios, on bandstands and largely in the background of other people’s success rather than chasing the spotlight himself.

Grammy Recognition and Industry Honors

Detamore’s technical work earned formal industry recognition on multiple occasions. In 2001, he engineered and performed on Bill Kirchen’s “Poultry in Motion,” which earned a Grammy nomination for Best Country Instrumental Performance. In 2008, the Academy of Western Artists honored him with the Will Rogers Award for Record Producer of the Year. From 2009 to 2012, he was also a featured performer in the classic country revue “San Antonio Rose Live” at San Antonio’s historic Aztec Theatre, a role that kept him connected to live performance even as his career increasingly centered on studio production.

Remembered by the Artists He Helped

News of Detamore’s death prompted an outpouring of tributes from within the country music community, particularly from artists in Texas who had worked closely with him over the years. Singer Sunny Sweeney, who collaborated with Detamore on her own recordings, wrote following the news, “With the most giant broken heart, I want to wish my great friend and mentor, Tommy Detamore, smooth sailing up to heaven. I just spoke with him three days ago.”

Those who knew Detamore described a musician whose contributions, while rarely front and center, were foundational to the sound of the records he touched, someone whose expressive steel playing and careful ear as a producer helped frame the voices of the artists he worked with rather than compete with them.

A Career Built on Craft Over Fame

Detamore’s career reflected a particular kind of country music success story, one built less on chart-topping fame under his own name and more on decades of consistent, trusted craftsmanship that other artists relied upon. His reach extended from old-guard legends like Ray Price and Johnny Bush to younger, contemporary artists carrying the Texas country and Americana torch forward, a span that friends and collaborators have pointed to as evidence of just how enduring and adaptable his musical instincts remained across more than four decades in the industry.

In her tribute, Sandra Detamore closed with a personal note of faith and gratitude, writing, “Thank you Lord Jesus for allowing me to love and be loved by Tommy. I know where he is and I thank you and one day I too will be with him again in our mansion in the sky.”

Survived by Family and a Wide Musical Community

Detamore is survived by his wife, Sandra. Across a career built largely behind the scenes, his influence as a producer and steel guitarist left a lasting imprint on the sound of contemporary country and Americana music, one that colleagues say will continue to be felt through the many recordings that carry his fingerprints, even for listeners who may never have known his name.

Funeral and memorial service arrangements had not been publicly announced as of Thursday. Given Detamore’s decades-long presence within the Texas country and Americana music scene, tributes from fellow musicians and industry figures are expected to continue in the coming days as word of his death spreads further through the community he helped shape from behind the recording console at Cherry Ridge Studio.

Aldi and Lidl should face same land agreement rules as supermarket rivals, watchdog says

Restrictions currently apply to seven retailers

Lidl and Aldi have expanded in the UK in recent years

Aldi and Lidl ought to be subject to the same land agreement regulations as Britain’s biggest supermarket chains, the UK’s competition watchdog has said in provisional findings.

The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) proposal would prevent the German discount retailers from obstructing rival supermarkets from setting up near their stores.

Rules designed to stop large grocery retailers from using land agreements to make it harder for rival supermarkets to open nearby, particularly through restrictive covenants and exclusivity arrangements, were introduced in 2010.

The restrictions currently apply to seven retailers – Asda, Co‐op, Marks and Spencer, Morrisons, Sainsbury’s, Tesco and Waitrose.

In a provisional decision, the CMA said it believes Aldi, Lidl GB and Lidl NI should also be subject to the rules.

Aldi is the UK’s fourth largest grocer, with a 10.8% share of the market, and Lidl the sixth largest with an 8.8% share, according to recent figures from Worldpanel.

Both retailers have expanded rapidly through new store openings in recent years, while also drawing in fresh customers with their competitive discount pricing.

The regulator noted that the brands were not originally included in the rules owing to their more limited product ranges, but stated they should now fall under the restrictions following significant expansion of their store estates and the opening of larger outlets.

The CMA has confirmed it is seeking further views before reaching a final decision. Juliette Enser, executive director of competition enforcement and markets at the CMA, said: “We want everyone to have the best choice of supermarket and range of prices when buying their groceries.

“To ensure this happens, we put rules in place to prevent big supermarket chains blocking rival stores from opening nearby – and now we propose applying those rules to Aldi and Lidl too.”

An Aldi spokesman said: “The CMA’s provisional decision does not impact our long-term growth plans across the UK.

“We remain firmly committed to opening hundreds of new stores across the country, bringing Aldi’s unbeatable value and award-winning quality to even more customers.”

A Lidl spokesman said: “We note the CMA’s provisional decision regarding our status under the Controlled Land Order.

“As a discounter, we have always welcomed and embraced competition within the market and our focus remains on continuing to open new stores and bringing our high-quality, lowest-priced groceries to even more communities. Any outcome will not impact our steadfast momentum and growth.”

US stocks: S&P closes at record high as soft jobs report eases rate-hike concerns

US stocks: S&P closes at record high as soft jobs report eases rate-hike concerns
U.S. stocks advanced on Friday, with the S&P closing at a record high to cap off a strong week of gains for the major indexes, after data showed the U.S. economy unexpectedly shed jobs last month and dampened expectations the Federal Reserve would raise interest rates at its September meeting. The Labor Department said nonfarm payrolls decreased by ‌23,000 jobs last month, well below the estimate of economists polled by Reuters that called for an increase of 80,000 jobs.

Previously reported job gains for the prior two months were also revised sharply lower, while the unemployment rate fell to 4.1% last month from 4.2% in June due to workers leaving the labor force. Market expectations for a rate hike from the Fed at its next meeting dropped to about 44%, according to CME FedWatch, down from 55% in the prior session and 67% a week ago. Signs of progress for a potential peace deal in the Iran war have helped cool oil prices and, in turn, have eased inflation worries that could prompt a Fed rate ‌hike and pushed Treasury yields lower.

A strong earnings season has also tempered concerns about the massive spending by AI-related companies, sending each of the three major indexes to their biggest weekly percentage gains since mid-April.

“You probably have to lower rates to kind of stimulate job growth, but if you lower rates, you’re going to also stimulate inflation. So you’re kind of in a pickle at this point, and yet the market’s just taken off because earnings have been stellar,” said Tom Siomades, chief market economist at AE Wealth Management in Topeka, Kansas.

“The market should be reacting to weak job numbers and higher inflation and the possibility of a slow-growth economy that may need to have rates raised rather than cut, and yet it’s not. We’re setting records, so go figure.”

With earnings season entering the final stretch, of the 436 companies in the S&P 500 that have already reported results through Friday morning, 85.1% have ‌topped analyst expectations, according to LSEG data – well above the 68% average since 1994.
Under new Fed Chair Kevin Warsh, the U.S. central bank has offered investors little forward guidance on monetary policy, leading market participants to focus on economic data and commentary from policymakers.MAJOR INDEXES POST GAINS

According to preliminary data, the S&P 500 gained 46.48 points, or 0.60%, to end at 7,756.44 points, while the Nasdaq Composite gained 338.81 points, or 1.29%, to 26,690.62. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 151.33 points, or 0.28%, to 54,036.43. Elon Musk’s SpaceX surged a day after the expiry of the first of several share lockup restrictions following its record public offering in June. Collaboration software maker Atlassian shot up while chip company Microchip Tech jumped after both forecast quarterly revenue above estimates. Among other movers, vacation rental company Airbnb rose as the best performer on the S&P 500 after beating second-quarter revenue estimates. In contrast, Trade Desk plummeted as the worst performer on the benchmark index after the ad-tech firm forecast third-quarter revenue below expectations.

More than 160 homes planned for former accountancy HQ site

Glenbrook reveals plans for former Beever & Struthers base

The proposed plans for Chester Road

The proposed plans for Chester Road

The former HQ of an accountancy firm in Hulme could be bulldozed to make way for more than 160 new homes. St George’s House on Chester Road could be replaced with two apartment blocks with a total of 162 new flats.

The handsome building was once home to financial advisors Beever & Struthers. The firm moved to Ancoats in 2022 and the vacant property has since been shuttered up and sold to developers. Glenbrook, who have acquired the land, are now proposing to turn the site into an ‘attractive, sustainable development that responds positively to Hulme’s character while delivering much-needed homes’.

The developers have not yet submitted a planning application to the council, but have launched a public consultation looking for the input of local residents, businesses and community groups.

The plans involve building two blocks of one-, two-, and three-bedroom dwellings that would sit parallel from each other facing a shared courtyard with landscaping and play areas.

A six-storey tower will run along Chester Road, opposite the significantly taller DeTrafford building. Meanwhile, a shorter four-storey block would be constructed on Anne Nuttall Road, opposite a row of terraced homes.

Michael Watson, development manager at Glenbrook, said the plans have ‘evolved significantly’ in conversation with Manchester City Council, with a focus on ‘creating a distinctive place and high-quality homes’ that fits with the surrounding area in Hulme.

Feedback sessions for the public will be held at New Hope International Ministry on Tatton Street on Thursday 13 August, 4-7pm and Tuesday 18 August, 1-4pm. Tim Groom Architects, who are supporting the development, have also launched an online consultation.

Glenbrook are also currently working on plans to redevelop Church Street car park in the Northern Quarter. The underused 685-space multi-storey parking lot could soon make way for around 600 new homes and four new town squares.

The area has been tipped for demolition since 2024, and has become a hotbed of antisocial behaviour and crime, with a 19-year-old man stabbed on the road outside on July 31.

The plans have not yet been submitted to Manchester’s planning department.
