Richard Pym returned to the fan-owned side last year
The chair of Exeter City Football Club has stepped down after less than four months in the job. Richard Pym rejoined the South West club in the autumn after financial difficulties put its future in doubt. Last season, the fan-owned side secured loans of around £600,000 from Exeter City Supporters’ Trust, which owns the club.
Mr Pym, who is the grandson of Exeter City, Bolton Wanderers and England goalkeeper Dick Pym, previously chaired the Grecians between 2020 and 2021.
During his tenure, Mr Pym negotiated an early payment of transfer sell-on fees owed to the club after striker Jay Stansfield left for Birmingham City in a £15m move in 2024.
In a statement on the club’s website, Exeter City said: “Richard leaves with the club and trust’s grateful thanks. He has made a vital contribution towards securing the future of the football club.
“This includes significant progress since he returned to support the club during the autumn of 2025 and subsequently stepped into the role of chair in November. His expertise has helped to place the club on a more stable financial footing.
“His contribution has included finalising the agreement for forward financing of deferred transfer payments and the creation of a plan for subsequent loan support.
“The proposed Rights Issue set out by Richard will also provide a clear path for increasing the trust’s shareholding in the club and would provide opportunities for new investment in the club.”
Laurence Overend, the side’s vice-chair, will take over Mr Pym’s role on an interim basis while the club undertakes the appointment of a new chair.
