Last summer, Hollywood veteran Tom Cruise took his iconic character Ethan Hunt on one last daring mission in Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning. Sure, given its eye-watering production budget, the film technically flopped at the box office, but the audience response and final global haul, going toe-to-toe with the biggest titles of the summer, were enough to convince some that this was an overall success. However, even those who steadfastly defend The Final Reckoning must admit it doesn’t even come close to another of Cruise’s big action movies of this decade, one that is often cited as saving the cinema industry.

Released in the summer of 2022, Top Gun: Maverick was the long-awaited legacy sequel to the 1986 action classic, with Cruise reprising his role as the titular Maverick. Simply one of the greatest action movies of this century, The Final Reckoning director Christopher McQuarrie penned the film, with F1‘s Joseph Kosinski in the director’s chair, with this pair of Hollywood veterans proving the perfect partnership to craft one of the most impressive action films of all time. Alongside Cruise, the film also brought new blood to the franchise with the introduction of Miles Teller, Monica Barbaro, and Glen Powell.

As soon as Top Gun: Maverick debuted, critical opinion rose to positive heights faster than a Boeing F/A-18E/F Super Hornet. Sporting a near-perfect 96% score on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, the second-highest score of Cruise’s career, the consensus on the site reads, “Top Gun: Maverick pulls off a feat even trickier than a 4G inverted dive, delivering a long-belated sequel that surpasses its predecessor in wildly entertaining style.” Audiences agreed, awarding a 99% score with their consensus, “If you loved the original — or enjoy some good old-school action — you need to speed your way to a screening of Top Gun: Maverick.” At the time of writing, Top Gun: Maverick is one of the ten most-streamed movies on Paramount+ in the U.S.
