45+ Years Later, One of the Greatest War Movies Ever Is Being Rewritten as a Streaming Hit on April 1

Cinema has never been afraid to tackle the biggest and most contentious events in the world. This is no better illustrated than in the war genre, and there is perhaps no conflict more associated with cinema than Vietnam. From a superb Tom Cruise performance in Born on the Fourth of July and the six Academy Award wins of Forrest Gump to a 31-year-old Willem Dafoe‘s Platoon and the star-studded The Deer Hunter, some of the greatest movies of all time are set against the volatile backdrop of the Vietnam War.

The very best Vietnam War movie, and possibly the greatest war movie of all time, is Apocalypse Now, the genius Francis Ford Coppola effort loosely inspired by a 1899 novella. Nominated for eight Academy Awards, including nods in the Best Picture and Best Director categories, the film walked away from the 52nd ceremony with two Golden Statues, winning for Best Cinematography and Best Sound. However, Apocalypse Now‘s greatest achievement was at the Cannes Film Festival, where it became Coppola’s second movie to win the coveted Palme d’Or, five years after he triumphed for The Conversation.

Adored by critics, Apocalypse Now boasts a “certified fresh” 91% score on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, with audiences awarding a 94% rating. The critics’ consensus on the site reads, “A voyage to hell where the journey is more satisfying than the destination, Francis Ford Coppola’s haunting, hallucinatory Vietnam War epic is cinema at its most audacious and visionary.” In his 4/4 review at the time, the acclaimed critic Roger Ebert wrote:

“Remember the weird beauty of the massed helicopters lifting over the trees in the long shot, and the insane power of Wagner’s music, played loudly during the attack, and you feel what Coppola was getting at: Those moments as common in life as art, when the whole huge grand mystery of the world, so terrible, so beautiful, seems to hang in the balance.”

Nurse Paid $6K For “School,” Then Lost License

Nurse Stephanie Skipper Paid $6K For Post-Op School At Tainika Brown Tosi University — Then Lost Her License

Registered Nurse Stephanie Skipper reportedly had her license suspended and nearly lost her home after Tainika Brown, the woman behind shuttered Tosi University, filed a complaint with the nursing board. Skipper reportedly paid $6,000 to take post-op surgery courses at Tosi. But after she allegedly “declined to join Brown’s organization,” Brown allegedly retaliated. Ultimately, the Maryland Board of Nursing suspended Skipper’s license, sending her into financial ruin and foreclosure.

But is there more to the story?

Now, The Shade Room’s Justin Carter is looking into what happened on ‘TSR Investigates.’

More On Registered Nurse Stephanie Skipper’s License Allegedly Being Suspended By Way Of Tainika Brown

According to Carter, the Maryland Board of Nursing revoked Stephanie Skipper’s license based on allegations that she was running an illegal post-op surgery business. However, Skipper says the claims are false and came from forged documents from Tainika Brown. Per Skipper, the incident occurred after she rejected Brown’s recruitment offer. Instead, she was working to roll out her own post-op course when she received a letter from Brown. In it, Brown allegedly told her that her course was unauthorized and if Skipper didn’t hand it over to her for her review, she would report Skipper to the Maryland board.

Per Carter, the board received “disturbing” complaints about Skipper. One claim alleged that Skipper’s practices made her clients prone to the “transmission of infections.” Another claim noted Skipper’s alleged “incompetence” in offering body-altering courses.

More On Tainika Brown, The Woman Behind Tosi University, Alleged Complaint

However, it was ultimately discovered that the complaint, allegedly signed by a fellow doctor, was fraudulent. The doctor later came forward and submitted an affidavit stating that he did not know Stephanie Skipper or her medical work and believed his name was used for “fraudulent purposes.”

Scroll above to watch as Skipper explains how her license was suspended. And how the ordeal left her in financial turmoil, with two houses on the verge of foreclosure. Additionally, Carter recaps the fraudulent claims submitted against Skipper. Ultimately, Skipper shares how she cleared her name. And Carter shares what has happened since to Tainika Brown’s Tosi University, as well as the statement TSR received from her attorney ahead of this episode’s airing.

Netflix’s Barren, Empty April Schedule Is The Future Of Entertainment

Netflix's Barren, Empty April Schedule Is The Future Of Entertainment

By Jonathan Klotz
| Published

It’s no secret that Netflix is the largest streaming platform in the world. Over the last 10 years, it’s been the home to an ever-growing catalog of award-winning original series and movies, and in that sense, not much has changed. What avid Netflix watchers have started to notice has become clear with the platform’s April additions, which feel a lot more sparse than they used to.

There are a lot of older blockbusters coming to the platform and original series coming back for another season, but the emphasis isn’t on any of that: it’s on live events. If you’ve thought that Hollywood is making fewer and fewer shows and films each year, you’re right, and when even Netflix is focusing on boxing, baseball, and reality competitions, you know the world of entertainment has changed.

Netflix Is Getting Great Movies You’ve Already Seen

Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle

There are some great movies coming to Netflix this month, including the first five Mission: Impossible movies, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, the Oscar-nominated sci-fi film Bugonia, and Denzel Washington’s underrated American Gangster. For shows, the first Stranger Things spin-off, Tales from ‘85, is arriving late in April, Beef Season 2 covers a new feud between Oscar Isaac and Carey Mulligan, and if you like anime, Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure Steel Ball Run is a must-watch. The problem is a lot of the movies are five years old, or significantly older, and the shows, with the one Hawkings Indiana sized exception, tend to be Season 2, or even later.

You’ve likely already seen most of the movies coming to Netflix. What you haven’t seen is Charlize Theron’s latest film, Apex, an action-thriller about humans hunting humans. It doesn’t sound all that exciting, but then again, neither did the log line for The Old Guard, and that turned into a surprisingly fun romp. Don’t worry, though, because Netflix is continuing its push into live entertainment as streaming becomes more and more like cable with every passing day.

Netflix Is Turning Into Cable

WWE Raw Dominates Netflix Every Monday

On April 11, Tyson Fury takes on Arslanbek Makhmudov in a boxing match between, and this might shock you considering the streamer’s love of Jake Paul, professional boxers. Two more boxing events, Supernova Strikers: Genesis, pitting boxers against influencers, and Supernova: Genesis, a legit boxing card, airs later in April as well. That’s a lot of boxing that’s on top of the weekly streams of WWE Raw, podcasts including Bill Simmons and Pete Davidson, and now, baseball games.

Netflix is slowing down the output of streaming originals and instead spending the time and effort on live broadcasts, whether you want it or not. The future of entertainment is going back to the past of cable television, where live events ruled the ratings. It’s alright if Netflix slows down it’s releases, not only because the shows coming out this month, including Beef Season 2 and Man on Fire with Wonder Man star Yahya Abdul-Mateen II look like fun, but there’s so much already on the platform it’ll take decades to go through it all.

Compounding the lack of streaming originals, particularly sci-fi this month, is that Hollywood has slowed down the number of shows and films getting release dates. On the one hand, it’s good, as for awhile, it was impossible to keep up, but on the other, it means more four-quadrant concepts and, less wild, creative swings at big, bold concepts. Netflix isn’t going anywhere, but what we watch on the platform is starting to change, and before we know it, the streamer will switch to the weekly release model. When that happens, it’ll be official: cable is back.

Published

Taylor Frankie Paul’s neighbor called 911 ahead of the Secret Lives of Mormon Wives star’s 2023 arrest once she heard “screaming.”

“First, there’s like domestic violence; somebody is screaming, ‘Get off me.’ There is a woman screaming,” Paul’s neighbor told emergency operators in footage obtained by Us Weekly from the Herriman City Police Department in Utah. “The garage door keeps opening and shutting. It sounds like she’s trying to get out.”

The individual further remarked that it seemed “like somebody [was] leaving” the property.

“Somebody’s getting in the truck,” she said. “So, it looks like the lady who was screaming might be leaving right now. … [She] actually didn’t leave. Now, she’s going back in the house.”

New bodycam footage from Taylor Frankie Paul’s 2023 domestic violence arrest reveals the aftermath of her alleged altercation with former boyfriend Dakota Mortensen. On Monday, March 23, TMZ released nine minutes of bodycam footage filmed as Herriman City Police Department officers arrived at Paul’s home and had to physically separate her from Dakota, 33. As […]

Paul and now-ex Dakota Mortensen got into a physical altercation in February 2023, leading to Paul’s domestic violence arrest. She pleaded guilty to aggravated assault as part of a plea deal to dismiss additional charges of domestic violence in the presence of a child, child abuse with injury and criminal mischief. (Paul shares Indy, 8, and Ocean, 5, with ex-husband Tate Paul, as well as son Ever, 2, with Mortensen, 33.)

According to Paul’s neighbor, she didn’t hear any weapons or signs of the then-couple drinking alcohol.

“I know they have kids, [but]  I don’t know if the kids are there right now, because I think she shares time with her ex-husband,” the woman said, adding that she wasn’t sure whether Taylor sustained any injuries. “I would love to know if they’re OK. I mean, it looks like she’s OK right now. I don’t know if somebody else in there was screaming.”

She continued at the time, “I don’t know what is going on. But anyway, I don’t really want them to know that I’m the one that’s calling the police.”

Details about Taylor Frankie Paul’s 2023 arrest have resurfaced in the wake of her latest scandal. A spokesperson for Utah’s Draper City Police Department confirmed to Us Weekly that there was an open “domestic assault […]

Footage from Taylor and Mortensen’s fight leaked earlier this month, in which the MomTok creator was seen physically assaulting Mortensen and throwing chairs at him in front of her daughter. Afterward, ABC canceled plans to air Taylor’s season of The Bachelorette.

“Taylor is very grateful for ABC’s support as she prioritizes her family’s safety and security,” a spokesperson for Taylor told Us in a March 19 statement. “After years of silently suffering extensive mental and physical abuse as well as threats of retaliation, Taylor is finally gaining the strength to face her accuser and taking steps to ensure that she and her children are protected from any further harm.”

The rep added, “There are too many women who are suffering in silence as they survive aggressive, jealous ex-partners who refuse to let them move on with their lives. Taylor has remained silent out of fear of further abuse, retaliation and public shaming. She is currently exploring all of her options, seeking support, and preparing to own and share her story.”

Mortensen, for his part, has publicly denied any accusations regarding his conduct at the time and was granted a temporary protective order against Taylor. Per the court order, Mortensen was also awarded sole custody of son Ever until a court hearing next month.

The Buffy Episode That Secretly Honored The Earliest Cinematic Universe

The Buffy Episode That Secretly Honored The Earliest Cinematic Universe

By Chris Snellgrove
| Published

Buffy the Vampire Slayer is arguably the most seminal series of the ‘90s, influencing literally decades of movies and TV shows. There’s a reason every superhero film is full of “Whedon-esque” dialogue: because everyone writing modern movies grew up watching Buffy crack pop culture-inflused jokes while dusting vamps, one stake at a time. On top of the clever writing, the show succeeded because it turned the horror genre on its head, presenting someone who would normally be the victim in a scary movie (namely, a pretty little blonde) into someone who scared even the most frightening monsters.

Horror fans naturally flocked to Buffy because it featured vampires, werewolves, zombies, and just about every supernatural threat you could imagine. Ironically, though, all this surface-level scariness often kept fans from seeing the spooky forest for the trees. For example, most audiences realize very early on that the episode “Beauty and the Beasts” is an homage to The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. But few have realized that this episode is also an homage to the earliest cinematic universe: Universal Monsters!

Nowhere To Hyde

You think he listens to Rogan?

“Beauty and the Beasts” is an episode where the Scooby Gang discovers a horrific murder and thinks that the killer could be their pal Oz, who transforms from a laconic rocker to a hungry werewolf at the sight of the full moon. The real culprit is a Sunnydale High student who has been taking a potion to make himself stronger and more virile (Chadmaxxing, as the kids might say). But he ends up turning into a rage monster who beats his girlfriend and kills innocent victims. Buffy is ready to put him down for good, but she doesn’t have to, as the Incredulous Hulk is killed by Angel, who has mysteriously returned to life.

From the very beginning, Buffy the Vampire Slayer fans easily clocked that “Beauty and the Beasts” was referencing The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, in which an upstanding scientist creates a potion to help unleash his dark side. That happens to the young antagonist at the heart of this story, and, as with Dr. Jekyll, the monster he unleashes ultimately gets him killed. What most fans didn’t clock, though, is that this underrated episode also serves as an homage to the cinematic universe that Universal Pictures created when their famous monsters began popping up in each other’s films.

An American Werewolf In Sunnydale

He’s a real animal in bed.

Nearly 80 years before Robert Downey Jr. kicked off the MCU, Universal created the original cinematic universe by combining some of its most famous properties. Audiences had already fallen in love with iconic movies featuring monsters like Dracula, Frankenstein, and The Wolf Man, and in the ‘40s, the studio began making crossover films like Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man. These killer crossovers became major hits for the same reason the Marvel Cinematic Universe did: namely, that audiences enjoyed seeing directors turn the silver screen into a playbox filled with their favorite toys.

What does this have to do with “Beauty and the Beasts?” Well, this Buffy the Vampire Slayer episode has its Mr. Hyde (who appeared in Universal’s Abbott and Costello Meet Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde) squaring off against the transformed Oz, who is the Buffy equivalent of the Wolf Man. He also fights against Angel, who is the Buffy equivalent of Dracula (at least, until the real Dracula shows up in Season 5). Meanwhile, our titular Slayer is a kind of stand-in for Van Helsing, battling both the Wolf Man and Mr. Hyde before the episode is over.

No shirt, no shoes? Still plenty of fan service!

In many ways, Buffy’s homage to the Universal Monsters is quite appropriate: if not for the success of the 1931 Dracula, we wouldn’t have had nearly a century of movies and TV shows based on everyone’s favorite bloodsuckers. Plus, while “Beauty and the Beasts” isn’t the best Season 3 episode, it does channel the best thing about Universal’s old crossover monster movies: namely, seeing a bunch of crazy monsters get into deliciously over-the-top fights. It’s enough to make me wish Buffy had updated her hilariously out-of-date Season 1 tag line: “if the monster mash comes, beep me!”

The Star Trek Episode That Only Exists Because Of A Sex Joke

The Star Trek Episode That Only Exists Because Of A Sex Joke

By Chris Snellgrove
| Published

Star Trek has, historically, had a complicated relationship with sex. On the one hand, Captain Kirk famously earned a reputation for sleeping with any woman (alien or otherwise) who gave him a second glance, and The Original Series set pop culture on fire with a sexy, dancing Orion slave girl. On the other hand, the sequel show, The Next Generation, was comparatively chaste: sex and even romance were relatively sparse, and Patrick Stewart went out of his way to beg writers to get Captain Picard active more often.

The pendulum had swung back the other way by the time Star Trek: Voyager came out. This is a show where revved-up Vulcans push mind melds, Captain Janeway bones a hologram, and Tom Paris has such loud relations with B’elanna Torres that the entire deck can hear it. Oh, and they tamed a female Borg and then made her wear a catsuit so tight even Kirk would blush. But that’s not the worst of it: you see, an entire Voyager episode was created because of a sex joke!

Let’s Talk About Sex, Baby!

“PLEASE stop calling it your ‘leola root!’”

The episode in question is “Elogium,” which has an A plot about tiny spacefaring organisms that glom onto the hull and start draining power from the ship’s systems. That’s bad enough, but their presence induces weird changes in Kes. Eventually, the Doctor discovers that these space critters have prematurely activated Kes’s mating cycle, something that wasn’t supposed to happen for another three or four years. Now, as Captain Janeway explores how to save her ship, Neelix and Kes must explore whether they are ready to have children.

During the Golden Age of Star Trek, freelancers and other fans were always encouraged to pitch stories and even send unsolicited scripts. The episode was originally pitched by both Steve J. Kay and Jimmy Diggs, the latter of whom was a Vietnam War veteran. The A Plot of “Elogium” was inspired by Diggs’ time in the Navy, when he was cleaning his vessel on a starless night. The darkness was only lit up by the ship’s own lights, which ended up attracting thousands of fish. The sight of these creatures really moved Diggs, who imagined the glittering fish as moving stars, illuminating his journey through the galaxy.

Captain, We’ve Lost Our Sex Appeal

Who said Vulcans don’t have a sense of humor?

Obviously, those fish inspired the space critters that are attracted to Voyager’s hull in “Elogium.” But the producers thought the episode still needed a B Plot, which is why Jeri Taylor pitched the idea of these interstellar creatures triggering Kes’s mating cycle. Diggs later confessed to The Official Star Trek: Voyager Magazine that Taylor’s idea caused him to make a spur-of-the-moment joke while pitching. “I said, when the crew discovers a way to rid themselves of the creatures and the beings eventually drift away from the vessel, Tuvok can say, ‘Captain, I believe that we’ve lost our sex appeal.”

According to Diggs, his joke amused Brannon Braga, who then said the “magic word” that every writer longs to hear: “sold.” Afterward, Diggs was understandably proud of his success, saying, “Star Trek bought my very first story because of that one, funny, tag line.” First is the keyword here, as Diggs went on to successfully pitch more Star Trek episodes than any other freelance writer in franchise history. This included “Doctor Bashir, I Presume,” which revealed that the titular physician had received Khan-like genetic augmentation. Diggs also pitched Voyager’s “The Omega Directive,” which would, decades later, inspire the galaxy-threatening plot of Starfleet Academy’s first season.

Home, sweat home.

While Jimmy Diggs never became a major Hollywood writer outside of this franchise, he has the honor of pitching some of Star Trek’s coolest stories. He also had the dubious honor of cementing Voyager’s reputation as Trek’s horniest show. Sure, future shows would try to entice viewers with everything from Klingon boobies to erotic underwear massages. But only Voyager can boast that it created an entire episode thanks to someone’s well-timed sex joke.

Woman Takes Colleague To Court Over “Auntie” Joke

Rihanna Seemingly Addresses Baby Rumors, Talks "Little Pouch"

Roommates, sometimes “harmless jokes” in the workplace are anything but—and Ilda Esteves just proved it. What started as a colleague repeatedly calling her “auntie” reportedly turned into a full-blown employment tribunal showdown. And, the verdict is giving everyone the side-eye.

RELATED: Wait WHAT?! California Man Convicted After Licking Woman’s Toes During Home Invasion (VIDEO)

Esteves Said “I Ain’t No Auntie.”

According to reports, Ilda Esteves, 61, brought a claim against her NHS employer after nurse Charles Oppong kept referring to her as “auntie,” despite her repeated requests to be called by her name. Oppong tried to defend himself by saying it was a term of respect in Ghanaian culture. However, the tribunal wasn’t buying it.

Judge Slams Oppong, Awards Harassment Compensation

Judge George Alliott reportedly described Oppong’s evidence as “poor,” noting that he was vague, evasive, and reluctant to even acknowledge a colleague named George who was involved in the incidents. The judge concluded that Oppong’s repeated comments, made in offices, corridors, and during handovers, were likely an offensive attempt at humor that created an uncomfortable environment for Esteves.

Furthermore, Esteves had already put Oppong on notice in a September 2023 email, writing that he repeatedly called her “auntie” despite being asked to use her name, even adding, “You want to be young then!” He also made comments about her lipstick and again suggested she’d be a “good match” for a colleague named George.

Esteves Refuses To Be Disrespected At Work

In the end, Esteves was reportedly awarded £1,425(which equated to approx. $1,890) in compensation for harassment based on her age and sex. The tribunal acknowledged that “auntie” can be a respectful term in Ghanaian culture. However, they emphasized that using it against her wishes was offensive. Her other claims, including discrimination and victimization, were dismissed.

Roommates, y’all know how sometimes a casual convo turns into a “wait…WHAT?” moment real quick? Well, that’s exactly what happened when Angela Simmons and Cam Newton linked up for a recent sit-down. What started off as a smooth exchange took a slight turn when the topic of their past came up. And let’s just say, the details had us raising eyebrows!

Angela Said One Date With Cam Was Enough For Her

On a recent episode of ‘Funky Friday with Cam Newton,’ Angela pulled up as a guest. And while the vibes were cool overall, things got a little spicy when their history entered the chat. Angela revealed that although people may have thought they dated, that wasn’t exactly the case. According to her, their connection came through Corey Gamble—apparently, the same Corey who’s been rocking with Kris Jenner for years. After being connected, the two eventually linked up. But when Cam asked to “settle something,” he straight-up said, “Did we ever actually date?” Angela made it clear: “I wouldn’t say the word date… we went out on a date.

Now here’s where it gets interesting. Cam chimed in to clear up the timeline, saying this all went down back in 2011 in New York. But according to Angela, that one date was more than enough. She admitted Cam gave her the “ick” after cracking jokes, laughing at them himself, and, in her words, showing a little too much interest in the ride home. Sis also pointed out that he kept patting himself on the back throughout the night —which ultimately sealed the deal for her. Angela wrapped it up by saying that whatever they had ended right there. While she clarified they never actually dated, she said they “met” and have only seen each other in passing ever since. Whew—talk about a one-and-done situation!

Fans Say That Date Was Never It

Fans quickly caught wind of the moment and flooded the ‘Funky Friday’ Instagram comments, going all the way in. Many were convinced Cam Newton definitely remembers that date but was playing it off, while others said Angela dodged a bullet. Meanwhile, some chimed in with a more neutral take, suggesting the date was probably just dry.

Cam Newton Sparks Debate Again With His Dating Takes

Whew, Roommates—Cam Newton stays sparking conversation when it comes to his dating philosophy, and this time was no different. As previously reported, Cam got real candid about how he views a woman’s “value.” He seemingly believes it can decrease with the more kids she has—whether it’s with one man or multiple partners. He even revealed he’s had this convo with one of his children’s mothers. Cam explained that while some men might shy away from stepping into a situation with multiple kids, he sees himself as the type to embrace it all.

Still, his comments had folks raising eyebrows as he broke down how other men might not be willing to take on that responsibility. Even though he made it clear that doesn’t mean she won’t find love—in his eyes, not everyone is built for that role.

Trump Brings Up Sex While Addressing Global Issues In Miami

During a speech at the Future Investment Initiative in Miami on Friday night, Trump invited the audience to ask him anything—sex included. “You can talk sex,” he said, prompting scattered giggles from investors, before adding, “You can do whatever the h*ll you want. I’m here for you.” The remarks came after a keynote largely focused on tensions with Iran, including his claim that the country had been “obliterated” and that Iranian leaders needed to reopen what he jokingly dubbed the “Strait of Trump.

The comment wasn’t his only eyebrow-raiser: the forum also took place just hours before reports of injuries at a U.S. military base in Saudi Arabia following an attack linked to the region’s ongoing conflict. Classic Trump—mixing global drama, military updates, and a side of cheeky humor in one speech.

Now, Y’all Know This Ain’t His First Controversial Answer

Now y’all know this ain’t the first time Donald Trump’s answers have left folks side-eyeing him. When you go to war, some people will die.” While he stressed that the U.S. is constantly planning for these scenarios, his casual delivery had plenty of viewers questioning if he really meant what he said, especially as Iranian officials signaled their focus on U.S. bases in the region following recent counterattacks.
