Amanda Seyfried and More Stars Who Say They Don’t Care About Oscars
The Academy Awards are supposed to be the pinnacle of the movie industry, but not every Hollywood superstar dreams of winning an Oscar.
Katharine Hepburn holds the all-time record for most acting wins at the Oscars, having received the Best Actress trophy four times. However, the Hollywood icon never once showed up to collect her Oscar statuette in person. (Hepburn’s one and only appearance at the Oscars occurred in 1974 to present the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award to producer Lawrence Weingarten.)
“Prizes are nothing. My prize is my work,” Hepburn famously said.
While the entertainment industry continues to be enamored with awards season, some prominent modern stars — including Bradley Cooper and Amanda Seyfried — have publicly complained about the hoopla surrounding the Academy Awards.

Samuel L. Jackson
The Avengers star is one of the most accomplished actors of his generation to never win a competitive Oscar — in fact, he’s actually only been nominated once in his entire career, for Best Supporting Actor in 1995 for Pulp Fiction. (Samuel L. Jackson lost the Oscar that year to Martin Landau for Ed Wood.)
“As jaded as I wanted to be about it, you know thinking, ‘Well, I should have won an Oscar for this or should have won for that and it didn’t happen,’ once I got over it many years ago, it wasn’t a big deal for me,” he told the Los Angeles Times in 2022. “I always have fun going to the Oscars. I always look forward to getting a gift basket for being a presenter. I give stuff to my relatives; my daughter and my wife would take stuff out. It’s cool … But otherwise, I was past it.”
Jackson said that he’d stopped taking Oscar nominations into consideration when choosing his roles.

“I’m not doing statue-chasing movies. You know: ‘If you do this movie, you’ll win an Oscar.’ No, thanks. I’d rather be Nick Fury [in Marvel]. Or having fun being Mace Windu [in Star Wars] with a lightsaber in my hand,” he added. “That’s the guy I chose to be and I’m fine with it. I’m satisfied because that’s who I am. I’m the guy who does the lines that people see on T-shirts.”
He continued, “There’s actors who go their whole careers and no one can quote a line they’ve said in a movie. People go to watch my movies to see how crazy I’m going to be or see how many times I say ‘motherf***er.’ Whatever gets them in the seats.”
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences finally recognized Jackson with an Honorary Oscar in 2021.
Seth Rogen
The comedian has four Emmy Awards, but he’s yet to receive an Oscar nomination. During a 2022 interview with Business Insider, Seth Rogen expressed confusion over why “movie people care so much if other people care what awards we give ourselves.”
“I don’t care who wins the automobile awards,” he joked. “No other industry expects everyone to care about what awards they shower upon themselves.”
Rogen argued that “people just don’t care” about who actually wins Oscars despite all of the hoopla that accompanies award season.
“Maybe they did for a while and they stopped caring. And why should they?” he asked.
Ethan Hawke
As of March 2026, Ethan Hawke has been nominated for acting Oscars five times, most recently for Best Actor at the 98th Academy Awards for his performance in Blue Moon.
Hawke told Who’s Talking to Chris Wallace? in April 2024 that he took his Training Day costar Denzel Washington’s advice about winning — or losing — an Oscar.
“You don’t want an award to improve your status. You want to improve the award’s status,” Hawke recalled. “The Academy Award has more power, because Denzel has a couple. It didn’t elevate who he was.”
Cate Blanchett
The Australian actress has won two Oscars — a Best Supporting Actress Award for playing Katharine Hepburn in The Aviator in 2005 and Best Actress for 2013’s Blue Jasmine. Still, Cate Blanchett said during Variety’s “Actors on Actors” podcast that awards recognition has never influenced her decision to take on a role.
“Awards are so subjective … they’re not why you do the work,” she pointed out.
Kristen Stewart
In 2022, Kristen Stewart received her first-ever Oscar nomination for playing Princess Diana in Spencer. The Twilight star chose not to campaign for the Academy Award, explaining that she didn’t define success with awards.
“I don’t give a s***,” Stewart said on Variety’s “Award Circuit” podcast. “The Oscars are such a funny thing. There are so many incredible movies and performances that barely get seen. It definitely says something about where we’re at as a cumulative presence, like, what we’re looking at [and] what we care about.”
Joaquin Phoenix
Joaquin Phoenix has often shared his displeasure over awards season. When his movie The Master received Oscar buzz in 2012, Phoenix told Interview Magazine that he did not “want to be part” of any campaigning.
“I don’t believe in it. It’s the worst-tasting carrot I’ve ever tasted in my whole life. I don’t want this carrot,” he insisted.

Phoenix described the awards buzz for his performance in Walk the Line as “one of the most uncomfortable periods of my life.”
“I never want to have that experience again,” he said. “I don’t know how to explain it — and it’s not like I’m in this place where I think I’m just above it — but I don’t ever want to get comfortable with that part of things.”
Amanda Seyfried
For the star of The Testament of Ann Lee, an Oscar nomination is seemingly far more important than actually winning. (Amand Seyfried received her sole Oscar nomination in 2021 for Mank. She lost the Best Supporting Actress Award to Minari’s Yuh-jung Youn that year.)
Asked if winning an Oscar was important to her, Seyfried told The New Yorker in January 2026: “No. Do you remember who won in the past 10 years? It’s not the win that’s important. It’s the nomination. It does thrust you forward. That’s a fact. Now, do I need one in a week or two or whenever? No, of course, I don’t.”
Seyfried conceded that an Oscar win could be beneficial for “every reason,” though she still felt it was not a “necessity.” She went on to compare her critically acclaimed 2025 religious drama, The Testament of Ann Lee, to her more conventional blockbuster The Housemaid.
“Every single choice I made in [The Housemaid] was as artful as the choices I made in Ann Lee,” she said. “I finally was able to marry the two in my heart and in my head, and I realized that is what I want for the rest of my career. I’m going to jump between genres as much as I can, and jump between indies and studios. So I’ve gotten this far without an Oscar. Why would I need one now?”
Bradley Cooper
Bradley Cooper is one of the most nominated performers in Oscar history to never actually win a statuette. (Cooper has earned 12 total nominations as an actor and filmmaker, as of January 2026.)
Back in 2020, he called awards season “utterly meaningless” while chatting with Hamilton’s Anthony Ramos for Interview Magazine.
“That awards season stuff is a real test,” he said. “It’s quite a thing to work through, and it’s completely devoid of artistic creation. It’s not why you sacrifice everything to create art, and yet you spend so much time being a part of it if you’re, in quotes, ‘lucky enough to be a part of it.’ It’s ultimately a great thing because it really does make you face ego, vanity, and insecurity. It’s very interesting and utterly meaningless.”
During a subsequent appearance on SuperSoul Conversation, Cooper suggested that the Oscars and other awards shows “play into things that have nothing to do with creative art.”
“It’s a whole other element of the business,” Cooper added. “So, it’s really reconciling its effect on you. That’s the thing I have to deal with.”
Anthony Hopkins
Anthony Hopkins is one of very few actors to have won two Best Actor Oscars throughout his career — first for The Silence of the Lambs in 1992 and then again for The Father in 2021.
However, Hopkins once dismissed award season as “kind of disgusting” when he was getting Oscar buzz for his 2012 biopic, Hitchcock.
“You know, kissing the backside of the authorities that can make or break it; I can’t stand all that,” he complained to HuffPost at the time. “I find it nauseating to watch and I think it’s disgusting to behold.”

Hopkins admitted he was embarrassed to see colleagues “groveling around and kissing the backsides of famous producers.”
“It makes me want to throw up, it really does. It’s sick-making,” he declared. “I’ve seen it so many times. I saw it fairly recently, last year. Some great producer-mogul and everyone kisses this guy’s backside. I think, ‘What are they doing? Don’t they have any self respect?’ I wanted to say, ‘F*** off.’”
Glenda Jackson
Two-time Academy Award winner Glenda Jackson joked to Entertainment Weekly in 2016 that the Oscars were more about “frocks and the whole shebang of nonsense” than artistry. The British actress did not attend the Oscars ceremony any of the four times she was nominated.
“Nowadays, it seems like the real competition is between the different award shows,” Jackson pointed out. “The Golden Globes, back in my day, if you won you were lucky to get a notice in the next day’s Los Angeles Times. Now the coverage is ludicrous.”
Pressed on whether she was underselling the importance of an Oscar, Jackson shot back: “Prove it. See, you can’t. Who won last year? Who won the year before? Does it make one scrap of difference? At the time, it does, yes. But that’s not how human beings are.”
“We enjoy the glitz of the moment, which is what it is,” she argued. “But how can you say that [Civil Rights dramas] 12 Years a Slave or Selma has caused a fundamental cultural shift? And then you have these Black guys being shot by policemen. Would that the Oscars could change the world but, I’m sorry, it just ain’t true.”
Woody Allen
The actor-turned-director has won four Oscars throughout his career but famously refused to attend the ceremony any of the times he was nominated. (Woody Allen won Best Director twice for Annie Hall and Midnight in Paris, as well as Best Original Screenplay twice for Annie Hall and Hannah and Her Sisters.)
“I have no regard for that kind of ceremony,” Allen once said. “I just don’t think they know what they’re doing. When you see who wins those things — or who doesn’t win them — you can see how meaningless this Oscar thing is. … I know it sounds terrible, but winning that Oscar for Annie Hall didn’t mean anything to me.”
Allen appeared at the Oscars only once in 2002 to honor the resilience of New York City in the wake of the 9/11 terror attacks.
Denzel Washington
Denzel Washington told Jake’s Takes in 2025 that Oscars were no longer a motivating factor in his career. (He won Best Supporting Actor for Glory in 1990 and Best Actor for 2002’s Training Day, in addition to being nominated eight other times throughout his career.)
“I don’t do it for the Oscars. I really don’t care about that stuff,” Washington insisted. “You know, I’ve been at this a long time, and there are times when I won when I shouldn’t have won … and didn’t win and should have won.”
He continued, “Man gives the award. God gives the reward. I’m not that interested in Oscars. People ask, ‘Well, where do you keep it?’ I say next to the other one. I’m not bragging. I’m just telling you how I feel about it.”
“On my last day, it ain’t gonna do me a bit of good,” Washington quipped.
George C. Scott
Perhaps no actor in Hollywood history had a more contentious relationship with the Oscars than George C. Scott. He issued a press statement in 1971 to request that the Academy rescind his Best Actor nomination for Patton.
“I respectfully request that you withdraw my name from the list of nominees. My request is in no way intended to denigrate my colleagues,” he said at the time. “Furthermore, peculiar as it may seem, I mean no offense to the Academy. I simply do not wish to be involved.”
The Academy declined to remove him from contention, and Scott eventually won the Best Actor Oscar at that year’s ceremony.
Per Time, Scott still likened the Oscars to a “goddam meat parade” and insisted that he did not “want any part of it.”
The Academy nominated him again for Best Actor anyway in 1972 for The Hospital, though this time he lost out to Gene Hackman for The French Connection.

A shocking new legal battle has brought private stories about Lauren Sanchez into the public eye.
A former friend has filed a lawsuit containing bold allegations about the media personality’s past interests and professional conduct.
She alleges that Sánchez once had the hots for former President Bill Clinton amid claims that the journalist also stole some of her ideas for her 2024 book, “The Fly Who Flew to Space.”

Lauren Sanchez Was Allegedly Once Attracted To Bill Clinton
According to a federal lawsuit filed in California by yoga instructor Alanna Zabel, Sánchez once harbored an intense romantic interest in former Clinton.
Zabel claims that after Sánchez met Clinton in 2009, she became so fixated on him that Zabel began calling her “Monica” in reference to Monica Lewinsky.
The lawsuit alleges that Sánchez, who was married to Patrick Whitesell at the time, actually enjoyed the cheeky nickname and described the former president as “sexy and mesmerizing.”
According to Page Six, Zabel noted that Sánchez was determined to secure an interview with him, which eventually happened on the show “Extra” in 2010, where viewers noted their flirty rapport.

Besides the personal bombshell revelations, the core of the lawsuit involves a claim of professional theft. Zabel alleges that Sánchez’s 2024 children’s book, “The Fly Who Flew to Space,” plagiarized key elements from her book, “Dharma Kitty Goes to Mars,” published a year earlier.
The two women reportedly discussed a book idea years ago based on a fly Sánchez saw on a helicopter windshield.
While Zabel is seeking damages for copyright infringement, Sánchez’s legal team has dismissed the claims as “frivolous,” arguing the only similarity is that both stories involve a trip to space.

As The Shade Room previously reported, last month, NLE Choppa was beefing with the mothers of his children when Blueface entered the mix and challenged the rapper to “squabble up.”
In turn, NLE responded by saying that his sons could get in the ring with Blueface’s sons. Additionally, he appeared to specifically speak on Chrisean Jr., saying that he appears to not be able to “hold” his “head up.”

The best part about dystopian sci-fi flicks from the 80s is living past the date where everything should have already collapsed and wondering how far off we are from actually experiencing what’s depicted. 1988’s Cherry 2000, set in the year 2017, is one of those films, and it’s an interesting watch because it explores themes that are relevant today, even though society hasn’t quite caught up with its fiction. We’re getting close, though. Technology has replaced intimacy, and our relationships with our devices in the present day result in the kind of isolation you see whenever you look up in public and watch people hanging out while simultaneously talking to the people they’d rather be with on their phones.
What hasn’t happened yet, but probably will sooner or later, is the common use of sex robots seen in Cherry 2000. Intimacy with a human counterpart is forbidden, but if you want to bump uglies with a clanker that looks like a Stepford Wife, you’re free to go to town so long as it’s in the privacy of your own home.
A Flood Of Endorphins And Detergent
The titular robot in Cherry 2000 (portrayed by Pamela Gidley) is the perfect partner for Sam Treadwell (David Andrews). She cooks him dinner and listens to him talk about his day. She’s also really into pouncing on her flesh partner at the worst possible moment, like when the dishwasher is overflowing. This sudsy, floor-bound rendezvous causes her to short-circuit, devastating Sam.
Though Sam is able to salvage Cherry’s memories, her body is kaput, meaning he has to venture out to the dangerous Zone 7. Legend has it that Zone 7 has a gynoid warehouse housing every make and model you could ever dream of, programmed to be your lifelong partner. Desperate to seek out a viable and identical replacement for Cherry, Sam hires a tracker named Edith Johnson (Melanie Griffith), who clearly longs for the old days. She drives a vintage, modified Mustang and has no qualms telling Sam he should just find a human partner instead of getting down and dirty with a robot.
With the help of the legendary yet elusive tracker Six-Fingered Jake (Ben Johnson), Sam and Edith breach the compound, but form a romantic bond along the way during their misadventures. Edith pines for Sam, who pines for the idea of a woman designed specifically for him, resulting in exactly the kind of sexual tension you’d expect. Sam becomes hot and bothered watching Edith competently navigate the wasteland and starts to wonder if this is what’s been missing from his life all along.
A Low-Budget Adventure Through The Wasteland
Cherry 2000, despite its meager $10 million budget, has surprisingly solid production values. Though it’s obvious Cherry is an actress during the scenes where she’s walking, talking, and interacting with her surroundings, the Zone 7 sequences are effective. Think of the clothing carousel you see at the dry cleaners and apply that same principle to a bunch of deactivated robot babes waiting to be charged up so they can pounce on their new owner as soon as they run their software updates.
Edith is a total badass, whether she’s flooring it in her Mustang or piloting a small plane. Actually, Melanie Griffith steals every single scene she’s in because the looks of disgust and bewilderment on her face while dealing with Sam are palpable. Here we have an end-of-days babe wearing flattering wasteland garb and never losing control of the situation. And how is she using her talent? Helping some schmuck named Sam track down a new sex robot that resembles the only “person” he’s ever loved: his old sex robot.
Cherry 2000 is schlocky and campy, but its charm comes from playing everything completely straight. Its premise is ridiculous but oddly prescient. Our protagonist finds companionship by isolating himself, when the solution to all of his problems is standing right in front of him, rocking a machine gun and looking for a real relationship. It just takes a while for Sam to see this, because he’d rather be alone with his device.

If there’s one thing that Saturday Night Live knows how to do, it’s make an iconic moment. For over 50 years, the NBC comedy institution has welcomed hundreds of actors, comedians, and musicians to take the Studio 8H stage as hosts, musical guests, or fun cameos. Just this season, we’ve already seen Heated Rivalry breakout Connor Storrie make his hosting debut, Cher perform as a musical guest, and Oscar nominee Teyana Taylor take the stage. But the most recent episode, hosted by Ryan Gosling, was historic because the musical guest, Gorillaz, wasn’t a new act using the platform to catapult itself into viewers’ playlists. They’re actually an iconic band that finally made their debut. The twist? They are the first virtual band to ever headline SNL.
Gorillaz Surprised Everyone With Their Song Choices on ‘SNL’
Leading up to Gosling’s fourth time hosting the sketch comedy series, the virtual band had been featured in the typical promos, plus one featuring Gosling and their hit, “Clint Eastwood.” The promo saw Gosling hilariously believe he was joining the Five-Timers Club, only to be proven incorrect by Mikey Day. Long-time fans of the band might have believed that it would be the sole appearance of their massive hit, but Gorillaz surprised all by using their opening slot to play “Clint Eastwood,” a song they released in 2001. The inclusion of the 25-year-old song was meant to thank the supporters who had been by their side since day one.

The high-concept band, which has been around since 1998, was originally created by Jamie Hewlett and Blur frontman Damon Albarn. But for the longest time, we only knew them by their virtual counterparts, 2-D, Murdoc Niccals, Russel Hobbs, and Noodle. Every album cover, every music video, everything we knew about Gorillaz was through those characters, and that’s what made them unique. Now that the virtual and non-virtual members are united as one, it was the perfect time for Gorillaz to remind the world why they are one of the most musically unique bands in history. Promoting their new album, The Mountain, the band performed “The Moon Cave” in the second song slot. With the hype largely surrounding the virtual band’s presence, history was also made for Albarn, as it was his SNL debut. Shockingly, Blur, the second biggest ’90s Britpop band behind Oasis, never appeared as musical guests on the series.
‘Saturday Night Live’ Has Featured Many Monumental Musical Moments
During the 50 years SNL has been on the air, it’s played host to many monumental musical moments. Perhaps you watched when Sinéad O’Connor tore up a photo of the Pope in 1992. Maybe it was back in 1977, when Elvis Costello abruptly switched songs into their forbidden track, leading to a long-term ban. Then there was the scandal in 2004 when Ashlee Simpson was caught lip-syncing.
Gorillaz’s appearance doesn’t come with controversy, but it joins the lineup of historic moments that will always be remembered. Just as Nirvana brought grunge to a mainstream audience and Funk 4 + 1 provided the first-ever hip-hop performance, the cultural significance of music on SNL continues to shape what we listen to.

What Is ‘The X-Files’ About?
Created by Chris Carter, The X-Files centered around FBI agents Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson). Scully, a skeptical medical doctor, was assigned to work with Mulder, whose belief in paranormal phenomena (inspired by the apparent alien abduction of his sister, Samantha, when they were children) had made him a laughingstock at the agency. Together, they travel across the country, seeking out the unexplained cases of murder, monsters, and mutants that Mulder dubbed the “X-Files,” even as Mulder starts to piece together a massive alien conspiracy that reaches to the highest levels of the government. Debuting on Fox in 1993, the show became an immediate smash hit; it ran for nine seasons, spawned two theatrical films, and then two abbreviated revival seasons…and it’s about to come back, courtesy of Sinners director Ryan Coogler.

Jack White is speaking out after his recent comments about Taylor Swift‘s lyrics and songwriting sparked online backlash. Social media users interpreted his words as a dig against the pop star, but White clarified that he was only describing his own songwriting preferences and not criticizing Swift’s work.

Jack White Doesn’t Like Writing Autobiographical Lyrics
In an interview with The Guardian on March 8, White was asked about his songs and whether they are autobiographical in nature.
The former White Stripes member said in response that he doesn’t like doing that too much, adding, “Now it’s become very popular in the Taylor Swift way of pop singers writing about all of their publicly aired break-ups, which I don’t find interesting at all.”
He went on to explain that he finds writing about himself “boring” and doesn’t want to relive a “painful” moment in his life every time he hears a song tied to a particular moment in his life.
“I’m not going to put this important, painful thing that I went through out there for some idiot on the internet to stomp all over,” he added.

Online Users’ Reactions To The Musician’s Comments
The backlash against White was almost immediate. Swifties defended their idol, and others disagreed with the musician’s opinion.
“Aren’t half the songs on the early White Stripes albums about his break-up with Meg?” one wrote, referring to Meg White, his former bandmate and ex-wife. The couple divorced in 2000, even before the White Stripes gained major recognition.
“Based on his career trajectory, most people don’t find his songwriting interesting at all,” one added.
Another user wrote, “Everyone does this. The only difference about Swift is that everyone cares more about who’s behind the song cause she’s big. But every love and breakup song is about someone. Everyone writes about what they’ve gone through!”

Jack White Clarified His Comments
White took to social media to respond to the reaction to his comments about Swift’s songwriting. In a post that has since been deleted, per NME, the singer said that he’s only going to leave the post up for a day before he puts the issue to rest.
White said he didn’t say Swift’s music was boring. He was only discussing how he preferred to write music.
“What I was trying to sayi n an interview I did about poetry and lyric writing, was that I don’t find it interesting at all for ME to write about MYSELF in my own lyric writing and poetry because I think that it could be repetitive for ME to always write about and it could be uninteresting for people who listen to my music to delve into…”

He acknowledged that Swift and others have achieved “tremendous success” writing in their own styles, and he doesn’t have anything against that. Additionally, he believes songwriters should use the process that works best for them.

The Singer Called Out The Media For Clickbaiting
In addition to addressing the backlash, White also criticized publications, journalists, and editors for producing clickbait content. That, he explains, is the reason why he’s less interested in doing interviews.
“In the age of this massive demand for clickbait and content, any scrape of anything interesting or off the beaten path that can be turned into drama is swamped over and spit out as bait,” he wrote.
According to White, artists are forced to give “safe” answers so as not to have their words twisted and turned into online fodder.
Jack White Released A Book Of Lyrics And Poetry
White said he was a bit apprehensive about putting the collection out there, as he said he may seem pretentious. However, he said it would be “an honor” for him to have anyone read something that he has written.
Jennifer Lopez is opening up about how she picked herself back up after going through her third divorce.
Speaking onstage recently at her Up All Night residency at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, Lopez, 56, who ended her 10-year marriage to singer Marc Anthony in 2014, shared the advice that helped her get through the difficult period.
After quipping that getting divorced for a third time was “when I started getting really good at it,” the multi-hyphenate turned more serious for a moment.
“It was actually a really tough time. I was really about to give up on it all. I was a single mom with two 3-year-old twins,” she said recently, per footage posted on social media. “I called up one of my mentors. Her name was [motivational speaker and author] Louise Hay, [and] she passed away. She said to me, ‘Jennifer, you’re a dancer, right?’ I said, ‘Yes, I am.’ She said, ‘When you’re learning a dance and you get the steps wrong, what do you do?’ I said, ‘I just keep going till I get the steps right.’ She said, ‘That’s right, Jennifer. Always keep dancing.’”
“I wish the same for each and every one of you, that no matter what life throws at you, you dance and you dance and you dance, again and again and again,” Lopez said, segueing into her hit song “Dance Again” as the audience cheered.
Lopez and Anthony, 57, share twins Max and Emme, who turned 18 in February.
The singer marked the occasion with a sweet Instagram tribute to her children last month, sharing photos and home videos of Max and Emme.
“You were born in the middle of the night, in the midst of the biggest, most beautiful snowstorm NY had seen in years!!” Lopez wrote. “I remember riding in the car and looking out the window, where everything was twinkling and covered in white that night, as I held you both in my belly for the last few moments before I gave birth to you.”
