Anna Faris Says Chuck Lorre’s ‘Mom’ Remarks Still Hurt
Anna Faris is confronting an unexpected sting from a show that once meant so much to her.
The actress, who spent seven seasons starring in CBS sitcom “Mom,” has responded after creator Chuck Lorre revisited his decision to cast her in his memoir, admitting that his original doubts about her ultimately proved justified.
While Faris made clear that the remarks hurt, she also used the moment to reflect on her recovery, her health, and how far she has come since leaving the series.
Anna Faris did not hide her disappointment after reading Lorre’s account of their time working together.
In a statement shared on Instagram, she said the comments caught her off guard, especially because she valued her time on the sitcom.
“Yikes. Yes, I read a few things. I really didn’t see that coming. Of course it hurts,” Faris wrote.
She also made a point of separating her feelings about the actor’s remarks from her appreciation for the people who helped make “Mom” a meaningful chapter in her career.
“Chuck gave me a job I loved, and for seven years I never took a day of it for granted. I’m proud of what we made together, and nothing changes how grateful I am for those people and those years,” she continued.
Faris Shares A Personal Message About Sobriety And Recovery
Beyond addressing the criticism, Anna Faris used her response to speak about a part of her life that had changed significantly since her time on “Mom.”
The sitcom explored addiction and recovery, subjects that later became personal for the actress.
“I’ve been sober for a year and a half. I was on a show about recovery and then I lived it,” the 49-year-old admitted.
She added that she was now healthy, working, and happier than she had been in a long time.
Faris also directed her message to people facing similar struggles, offering encouragement based on her experience.
In her words, “If anyone reading this is where I was, I hope that’s useful. It gets better. I’m proof.”
Anna Faris Receives Support From Fans
Fans flooded social media with support, disagreed with Lorre’s assessment of her casting, and praised her performance in “Mom.”
Several viewers described the sitcom as a comfort show they returned to repeatedly, with one fan insisting nobody else could have played Christy as well.
“Mom is my comfort show I binge and sleep to and I can’t imagine anyone else playing Christy. There was no mistake that you were perfect for that role!” the fan wrote.
Others focused on Faris’ sobriety announcement, congratulating her on her progress and thanking her for sharing such a personal part of her life. One commenter also praised her acting and expressed confidence in her role as a mother.
“MOM would have NEVER been MOM with you and Allison,” another fan wrote, describing Faris and Allison Janney as perfect for their respective roles. The viewer added that the series had become a go-to choice whenever they felt low or unwell.
Another supporter recalled meeting Faris in person and described her as sweet and down-to-earth. The fan expressed disappointment over the criticism directed at the actress and declared, “I’m team Anna.”
More From The Blast
Faris Faces Lorre’s Admission About Casting Her
In his memoir, Lorre explained that he initially questioned whether Anna Faris was suited to the material on “Mom.”
He reconsidered after reflecting on his earlier working relationship with Charlie Sheen, saying someone’s personal life shouldn’t determine whether they get a professional opportunity.
“Someone’s personal life is none of my business. The mom in Mom would be, and should be, Anna Faris,” Lorre wrote per Just Jared.
However, his assessment of the casting decision changed over time. Looking back on Faris’ departure after six years, he wrote, “As the years went by, it became apparent that my initial reluctance to hire Anna was, in fact, correct.”
Lorre also questioned the circumstances surrounding her exit, stating, “After six years, she left the show for mysterious reasons that were not mysterious to anyone on the show.”
Faris ultimately departed after seven seasons, while “Mom” continued for an eighth season before CBS canceled it.
Anna Faris Opens Up About Losing Focus Before Leaving ‘Mom’
Faris offered a more personal explanation for her unexpected departure from “Mom” during a June appearance on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast, reflecting on how the sitcom’s demanding schedule affected her after seven seasons.
The actress, who played Christy Plunkett from 2013 to 2020, said the commitment’s length and intensity became hard to manage, especially because she had never held a job that long before.
“I do think the intensity, towards the end, I think I started to lose my focus,” Faris explained, adding, “I never had a job besides waitressing for over three months before.”
Faris’ exit in September 2020 surprised viewers because she departed before the CBS comedy’s eighth and final season. At the time, she said she was leaving to pursue new opportunities, while the series continued with Allison Janney’s Bonnie Plunkett and the supporting cast taking on a larger role.
Looking back on her podcast appearance, Faris described her experience on the show as complicated, though she remained grateful for the opportunity.
“It was a complicated time. I think I should work it out, probably on more podcasts,” Faris admitted.
