Cancelled ‘Stargate’ Reboot Plot Details Revealed
Prime Video’s most recent high-profile cancellation keeps making headlines, with many fans reacting strongly, and it’s easy to see why. Just days ago, reports emerged that the reboot of one of the most respected sci-fi franchises of all time had been scrapped only a few months after receiving a series order, bringing the project to an abrupt end before production could fully get underway. Unfortunately, this isn’t the first time Amazon has pulled the plug on a major project early in its development, and it likely won’t be the last.
After receiving a series order from Prime Video in November 2025, the highly anticipated Stargate reboot from franchise veteran Martin Gero, who wrote for all three prior live-action series in the franchise, was canceled this month. Reports indicate that the project had already completed a 20-week writers’ room and entered pre-production in the UK before being scrapped.
With this latest Stargate reboot cancellation, concerns are once again being raised about Amazon/Prime Video’s willingness to commit to ambitious projects, particularly those requiring significant long-term investment. Among those weighing in on the decision is longtime Stargate executive producer Joseph Mallozzi, who took to X (formerly Twitter) to share a direct response to the news.
While Mallozzi confirmed the unfortunate news, he also elaborated on the significance of the Stargate reboot, which Gero had been developing for more than two years. According to Mallozzi, the series would have provided “a fresh jumping-on point for new viewers while deeply respecting existing canon by fully embracing the core of its predecessors: action, adventure, exploration, wonder, heart, humor, and found family.” The EP also took the opportunity to acknowledge the efforts of everyone involved in the project, including Gero, “the incredibly talented writers,” and the long-suffering Stargate fandom, who never gave up on the franchise.
Can ‘Stargate’ Still Be Revived Elsewhere?
Stargate was one of the first major MGM titles targeted for adaptation after Amazon’s $8.5 billion acquisition of the studio in 2022. However, the reboot was ultimately canceled because it reportedly no longer aligned with the company’s programming strategy. This decision was particularly surprising given that the series had been greenlit by Amazon MGM Studios’ Head of Television, Peter Friedlander, shortly after he joined the company last October. However, the project ultimately fell under Brett Fetter, Head of Worldbuilding & Genre Series, who only joined Amazon in February 2026.
For fans hoping another streamer might rescue the project, Mallozzi offered little optimism, noting that Amazon owns the rights. Reflecting on what could have been, he lamented:
“We’ll never get the opportunity to introduce you to that world and those characters — or reintroduce you to, and check in with, some familiar faces from the past.”
