Comedy Legend’s Disturbing, Most Hated Film Was Just Ahead Of Its Time

By Chris Snellgrove
| Published

Jim Carrey rose to fame as a rubber-faced funnyman in films like The Mask and Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, but he later showed how serious he could be with films like The Truman Show and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Before those acclaimed movies, however, Carrey starred in a film so dark that it threatened to jeopardize his career as Hollywood’s favorite comic actor. That movie is The Cable Guy (1996), and you can now hop on Tubi to stream an underrated classic that was way ahead of its time.

The premise of The Cable Guy (directed by comedy icon Ben Stiller) is that an architect getting over a nasty breakup (a proposal gone wrong; ouch!) befriends the cable guy who helped him watch movies for free. Unfortunately, that cable guy soon proves to be as obsessive as he is demented, and the toxic friendship he offers begins to ruin the architect’s life. His new “friend” is a one-man social wrecking ball, and it soon becomes clear that his free cable comes at way too high a price.

The Greatest Comedy Cast Of The Decade?

The Cable Guy has a surprisingly all-star cast, including Ben Stiller (best known for Tropic Thunder) and Jack Black (best known for School of Rock). It also stars prolific actor Eric Roberts (best known for Runaway Train). Oh, and to really drive home just how ‘90s this film is, it also features David Cross (best known for Arrested Development) and Andy Dick (best known for getting arrested).

Of course, the primary stars are Matthew Broderick (the ‘80s icon best known for Ferris Bueller’s Day Off) and Jim Carrey (the ‘90s comic legend best known for the Ace Ventura films): the former plays the straight man trying to get his life back together, while the latter plays the chaotic force of nature trying to tear everything down. The movie’s sublimely weird tone (it’s basically What About Bob? mixed with Cape Fear) helps challenge each actor, forcing Broderick into more of a dramatic role and forcing Carrey into a horror role. This nicely subverts our expectations about these characters even as it subverts our very understanding of what is and isn’t funny.

The Movie That Broke The Critics

In some ways, The Cable Guy was a victim of Jim Carrey’s outsized success as a breakout ‘90s comedian. The film earned $102.8 million against a budget of $47 million, making it a certified hit; nonetheless, Carrey was such a box office draw that both the studio and the audience expected his dark comedy to earn more money. As producer Judd Apatow (who would later become a director and tastemaker for early aughts comedy) put it, “people looked at it as a failure because it didn’t make even more money.

The Cable Guy was quite baffling to reviewers when its weird vibes first wired their way into theaters. It has a 57 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics complaining that the movie is frustratingly uneven throughout its runtime. They did admit, however, that the film has some deliciously subversive humor and provocative ideas that are often (though not always) enough to offset the uneven tone.

The Star Who Sang The Movie’s Praises

Interestingly, nobody likes this controversial film quite as much as Jim Carrey, who told LADbible in 2022 that “The Cable Guy is one of my favorite movies.” He went on to claim that his deranged character in the film “is all of us: we were all raised by the TV.” In that way, his character is less of a pop culture anomaly and more of a dark mirror image of an audience that is increasingly obsessed with media.

Dancing Into The Future

Personally, I think The Cable Guy was ahead of its time in presenting someone so obsessed with pop culture back when the World Wide Web was relatively new. Now, we live in an age where some people communicate almost exclusively in memes from movies and TV shows, and influencers make their living by reacting to whatever they have recently watched. Furthermore, the meteoric rise of Comic-Con-style events since this film first came out is proof that everyone is collectively crazier about pop culture than ever before.

While it still provides some wonderfully dark chuckles, the modern state of media obsession makes The Cable Guy a bit surreal to watch. It’s difficult to see the titular protagonist’s crazy antics and not think about some of your friends or family members who freak out over movies and TV shows and develop parasocial relationships with online personalities. This makes the film feel downright prescient at times, even as it introduced us to the darker side of Jim Carrey.

A Movie Ahead Of Its Time

Speaking of which, a fascinating side effect of The Cable Guy is that it opened unexpected doors for Carrey: for example, he almost certainly wouldn’t have landed serious roles in films like The Truman Show and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind if not for this earlier dark comedy. This was the film that proved that Carrey could still be compelling and charismatic even when he’s not doing his rubber-faced Ace Ventura thing. He’s gone on to do even more amazing work since then, none of which would have been possible if he hadn’t starred in the most transgressively hilarious film of the ‘90s.

Will you agree that The Cable Guy is a disturbing film that was frighteningly ahead of its time, or would you rather switch back to cable than stream this film on Tubi? You won’t know until you stream it for yourself and discover just how crazy a film can get. Come for the weird comedy and stay for the weirdest homage to Cape Fear ever made!

Tyrese Declares Himself ‘Verzuz’ Winner, Fans Want Answers

Published

Rihanna Seemingly Addresses Baby Rumors, Talks "Little Pouch"

Thursday night, Tyrese and Tank brought the ultimate R&B showdown to ‘Verzuz.’ From Tyrese hitting every note of ‘Sweet Lady,’ to Tank pouring his soul into ‘Slowly,’ the energy on stage was unreal. After the show, social media was split on a winner, but Gibson claimed it in a social post! Friday, Tyrese circled back to reflect on performing against Tank, while also clocking comments about his singing. Meanwhile, Ray J had a clear winner and shared harsh words for Tyrese.

RELATED: Awww! Tyrese Treats Daughter Shayla Gibson To Surprise Girls’ Day With Zelie Timothy & Internet Users Can’t Get Enough (WATCH)

Tyrese Says He Won Against Tank Then Praises Him

What appeared to be moments after the ‘Verzuz’ battle, Tyrese hit up In-N-Out and took to social media, declaring himself the winner—captioning it, “Don’t pay me no mind, I’m just doing what winners do,” clearly taking inspiration from Michael B. Jordan’s post-Oscar win meal at In-N-Out.

In a separate post, he reflected on the week leading up to the showdown. He said rehearsals “suck” and insisted that nothing ever quite sounds right until it’s live. Tyrese gave a shoutout to Tank, calling him “one of the greats in R&B soul,” and emphasized that the night wasn’t about competition—it was about giving fans a moment to relive their memories, from first loves to graduations and talent show wins.

“Music isn’t just entertainment it’s healing. It’s survival,” Tyrese wrote. “There’s pressure in knowing people rely on what we do… but there’s purpose in that too. Nothing is more powerful than music.”

He also thanked everyone behind the scenes—Swizz Beatz, Timbaland, Apple Music, and the bands on both sides—for keeping the vibes fire, even if a few rough notes snuck in. Tyrese admitted he was “an old man” the next day, voice shot and naps mandatory, but his heart was full.

Comments Go Off As Fans Debate The Winner

Roommates, y’all already know the comment section went crazy once TSR dropped the clip. Some folks were like, at this point Tyrese just says whatever he wants and doesn’t care who agrees, while others hit him with a quick “now Tyrese… you know you ain’t win.” Meanwhile, a few kept it cute and said both he and Tank did their thing—and honestly, both playlists can stay on repeat.

One Instagram user @dominiquechinn said, “They both are good artist, both music can play on repeat 👏👏”

This Instagram user @hd4president wrote, “Everybody won last night. It was a beautiful moment for R&B 🔥 he riding double R off hits front the 90’s. Definitely a winner.

And, Instagram user @kwanzatyree added, “I love ya Tyrese but you sing and Tank SANG!!! Big difference….

While Instagram user @beautifully_love joked, “lol I love how he dnt give a d*mn 😂😂”

Then Instagram user @_ataviaa shared, “Tank did not win. It wasn’t a writers contest 😂 Tyrese got it 🔥”

Finally, Instagram user @_cene_m said, “He definitely won!!! Tank sang the same song 30 mfn times 🫠”

Ray J Weighs In And Turns Up The Heat

And then there’s Ray’s J take on the battle. The singer didn’t hold back, taking aim at Tyrese and calling his performance “trash”—even saying it was worse than his own infamous Verzuz moment back in 2022. In a video making rounds online, Ray J kept it all the way real (and a little shady), joking in his caption that while he knew he was trash, Tyrese somehow took it to another level.

Rebecca Ferguson’s Highest-Grossing Sci-Fi Movie Surges on Streaming Ahead of Next Chapter

Published

Rebecca Ferguson on the red carpet

If there was ever a more obvious example of why studios don’t always invest in great projects, it’s the concurrent streaming success of two movies starring Rebecca Ferguson. The one released earlier received excellent reviews and grossed more than $700 million at the worldwide box office, while the second flopped commercially and was panned by critics. And yet, they are both among the most-watched movies in the world on their respective streaming platforms. The more recent of the two is the sci-fi mystery film Mercy, in which Ferguson plays an AI-powered judge who must determine if a cop accused of murdering his wife actually did it.

Directed by Timur Bekmambetov and headlined by Chris Pratt, Mercy holds a 25% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, and wasn’t able to recoup its reported $60 million budget during its theatrical run. However, it’s currently the number one movie on the global Prime Video charts, which suggests that audiences simply decided to wait for it to hit home video. But they rushed to the biggest screens available to watch Ferguson’s 2024 hit, which, according to FlixPatrol, is among the most-watched movies on the global HBO Max charts right now.

Rebecca Ferguson Is Having a Major Year in Sci-Fi

The movie in question is Dune: Part Two, the lavish sequel to director Denis Villeneuve‘s Dune, which was released day-and-date in theaters and on HBO Max in 2021. Despite the controversial release, the first film grossed more than $400 million worldwide and earned a bunch of Oscar nominations. As if to make up for its mistake, Warner Bros. gave Dune: Part Two a massive theatrical release. The movie grossed $715 million worldwide against a reported budget of $190 million, and received more favorable reviews than its predecessor. It now holds a “Certified Fresh” 92% critics’ score and a “Verified Hot” 95% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, where the consensus reads, “Visually thrilling and narratively epic, Dune: Part Two continues Denis Villeneuve’s adaptation of the beloved sci-fi series in spectacular form.” A third and final installment, Dune: Part Three, is slated for a December 2026 release, setting up a clash with Avengers: Doomsday. Ferguson will also return to lead the third season of her hit Apple TV sci-fi series Silo that same month. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates.

NYC Indie Scene Turns Out For ‘Once A Week For Life’ Premiere

Published

Two men standing on the red carpet.

New York’s independent film community showed up in force Thursday night as filmmaker George Zouvelos unveiled his latest feature, Once a Week for Life, at a red carpet premiere at Greenwich Cinema Village. The event marked a strong hometown debut for the crime thriller and served as a rallying point for the city’s creative scene.

A Film Rooted in New York Grit

Written and directed by Zouvelos, Once a Week for Life leans into a raw, character-driven portrait of organized crime, threading together themes of corruption, addiction, and moral consequence against a distinctly New York backdrop. The project positions itself as a grounded entry in the indie crime genre, one that prioritizes emotional realism over spectacle.

Thursday’s premiere drew a mix of established talent and emerging voices. Among those on the red carpet were The Breakfast Club and The Shape of Water actor John Kapelos, The Blacklist‘s Dikran Tulaine, and Father Figures actor Artie Pasquale, alongside Maria Soccor (KicksCatch the Wind) and Julia Helbich (Blood Mist).

The evening also pulled in a broader cross-section of New York’s cultural community, including Tony, Emmy, and Grammy-nominated performer N’Kenge, music artist and DJ Sky Jetta, author T.M. Novak, and entertainment personality Tyrone Jackson.

From Screening to Celebration

Following the film, Zouvelos and cast members took part in a Q&A that extended the film’s themes into open conversation before the night transitioned into an afterparty that carried late into the evening. The energy throughout reflected the kind of grassroots momentum New York’s indie circuit is known for, equal parts networking hub and creative reunion.

Once a Week for Life was produced by Fiat Lux Studios & Pictures in collaboration with Omega X Productions NYC and Baklavelvet Cinema, with Zouvelos and producer Nicholas Levis leading the project. Partners including Stonecutter Media, BrandCinema, and Jane Owen Public Relations backed the premiere, signaling a coordinated push to place the film within both the indie market and wider distribution landscape.

What’s Next

The film is set to debut on Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV on April 16, bringing it to a broader audience beyond the premiere circuit. And Zouvelos is already looking ahead. A sequel, Once a Week for Life 2, is currently in development, suggesting plans to grow the story into a continuing franchise built around the same gritty world introduced in the first installment.

For a film about crime and consequence, its premiere told its own story: a filmmaker and a community backing a project that reflects both the challenges and the enduring appeal of independent cinema in New York.

Reese Witherspoon Reveals Current Status Of ‘Legally Blonde 3’

Reese Witherspoon at You're Cordially Invited New York Special Screening-New York City

Elle Woods isn’t done just yet. Reese Witherspoon is officially teasing the long-awaited return of her iconic “Legally Blonde” character, confirming that a third film is still very much in the works. When asked about the sequel, Witherspoon didn’t hesitate: “Absolutely.” But while fans are eager for Elle’s comeback, Reese Witherspoon made it clear it may not happen anytime soon.

According to the actress, the team is taking its time to get it right. “It’s a whole world that we want to build with this character,” she told Bustle, adding that the goal isn’t just to revisit Elle Woods, but to expand her story in a meaningful way that reflects where she is now in life.

Witherspoon acknowledged that the demand for the sequel comes from a deeply connected fan base. “There’s a feeling that women want to rally around those characters that were part of their childhood and celebrate the idea that Elle Woods is more than the color pink,” she said. “She’s part of your identity of self-worth and accomplishment.”

Even as “Legally Blonde 3” moves forward, the franchise is already expanding. A prequel series titled “Elle,” starring Lexi Minetree as a younger version of the character, is set to debut on Amazon Prime Video on July 1.

“It’s her junior year of high school, and her father gets transferred to Seattle,” she teased of the show. “Sunshine and vibrant colors are traded for rain and grunge, and it’s such a mismatch. It’s really fun to see Elle Woods as this fish out of water in 1990s grunge-era Seattle.”

The actress added, “It was actually a great exercise in going back through the original two ‘Legally Blonde’ movies and finding the jokes that really resonated, the specificity of character, like Elle Woods and her dog are both Gemini and vegetarians, and all the little details of what she wore, and how she likes Prada.”

The show, produced by Witherspoon’s company Hello Sunshine, has already secured a season two renewal ahead of its premiere, signaling strong confidence in the franchise’s future.

Behind the scenes, the script for “Legally Blonde 3” has been in development for years. Mindy Kaling previously revealed, “Dan Goor and I just finished up a draft of ‘Legally Blonde 3,’ which I can’t talk about, but we turned it in before Christmas.”

She also hinted at a fresh take on the beloved character. “I can’t wait to see what people will think of the way we wrote Elle Woods,” Kaling shared. “We wrote Elle Woods at 40, so how Elle is at 40 versus how she was at 21 has been really fun to imagine.”

Reese Witherspoon Had ‘No Idea’ ‘Legally Blonde’ Would Be This Big

Looking back, Witherspoon admitted she never expected “Legally Blonde” to have such a lasting cultural impact. “I had no idea,” she said. “We worked really hard on the messaging.”

She added, “I was determined to make sure it was a story about a woman that wasn’t about her romantic relationships. It was about how she worked hard to accomplish something very difficult on her own terms, and no relationship would define her early 20s like that.”

And for fans still hoping to see Elle back on screen, Witherspoon has been clear about one thing. “I loved playing that character and she’s so amazing,” she said. “And I mean, if you guys want it, I guess I’ll do it!”

Reese Witherspoon Teases Intense Return In ‘The Morning Show’

Witherspoon is also keeping busy on the small screen, and it sounds like things are about to get intense.

The actress teased what fans can expect from the upcoming season of “The Morning Show,” hinting at a gripping storyline for her character, Bradley Jackson. “It’s so good,” Witherspoon said. “I was returning from being detained overseas as a journalist in prison, so Bradley Jackson is coming back from a really harrowing experience she’s [still] dealing with.”

She also revealed that her co-star Jennifer Aniston’s character will be facing her own set of challenges. “Jennifer [Aniston]’s character is thriving,” she said. “But she has to navigate this really complex career structure and people trying to sublimate her.”

Britney Spears Fans Debate The Pop Star’s ‘Nastiest’ Song

Britney Spears Fans Debate The Pop Star’s ‘Nastiest’ Song

Pop star Britney Spears may have put her career on the back burner ever since her controversial 13-year conservatorship ended in November 2021, but fans still have hope that she will return to the music industry one day and continue to put out hits such as “Toxic” and “Oops!… I Did It Again.” While she got her start as a child star on the Mickey Mouse Club, some of her music – well, most of her music – is known for raunchy themes about sex and intimacy.  Fans don’t love those songs any less. If anything, they actually love them more!

Britney Spears Fans Discuss Her ‘Freakiest’ Songs

It all began with a Reddit thread on the Britney Spears sub-Reddit, where one fan asked, “What is Britney’s nastiest/freakiest song?” They left a note that unreleased demos were definitely included in the online discussion.

“I was listening to ‘Pull Out’ and then ‘When I Say So,’ and I thought – d*mn these songs are nasty. In your opinion, what’s Britney’s freakiest song?” they asked.

Britney’s Lyrics Definitely Set The Mood

The song “Pull Out” has a pretty clear title, but the chorus takes things to another level with lyrics like, “You got to know when to pull it out / It’s gettin’ so hot but put it out / You’re makin’ me panic / I can’t stand it.”

Likewise, all of “When I Say So” is pretty clear, with Britney singing about how she ain’t “down for relationships.” She sings, “I just want it, when I want it,” and kicks off the song by crooning, “You read my eyes / My vibes / My body’s pace / Lookin’ my way and I’m lookin’ your way.”

‘Breathe On Me’ Was Released In 2003

Her 2003 song “Breathe On Me” from her album In The Zone got over 80 upvotes for being the most “nastiest” song and it’s not hard to see why. The song begins: “Oh, it’s so hot, and I need some air / And boy, don’t stop ’cause I’m halfway there.” Later on in the song, things get hot and heavy: “Monogamy is the way to go (go, go) / Just put your lips together and blow.”

Others heavily favored “Ooh Ooh Baby,” which she recorded for her fifth studio album, Blackout. In the lyrics, she sings, “Touch me and I come alive / I can feel you on my lips / I can feel you deep inside.”

One fan wrote out the lyrics in the comments, adding, “Uh, thanks for letting me know, I guess (still a bop though).”

‘3’ Was Deemed ‘A Lil Vulgar’ By One Fan

One fan wrote, “3 lmfao. It’s a lil vulgar even for me (that says a lot).” The lyrics clearly paint the picture of a sexual relationship that involves more than two people. The song begins “One, two, three / Not only you and me.” From there, she sings, “Merrier the more / Triple fun that way / Twister on the floor.”

“3 is one of my favourites. Especially when she’s escalating to 4, with that naughty look at the camera,” another follower shared. The music video for “3” was directed by Diane Martel and featured Britney and her dancers in front of different black and white backgrounds to exude a “sexy and playful” vibe.

‘911’ Might Be Britney’s Dirtiest Song To Date

Blackout has proven to be a very sexual album, but “911” might just contain her most explicit lyrics to date. “Sexing in the attic / When you felt so automatic / Felt explosive when you had it
When you c*m all over me.”

If that wasn’t enough, the bridge continues: “Boy I made it rain / Just when I squeezed and made it tight / Just so relaxed, so don’t you fight it / Just calm down, feel the freak in me.”

Other songs that made the list include “If You Seek Amy,” “Get Naked,” “Ouch,” “Photography,” “Over To You,” “Tik Tok Boom,” “Sinner,” and “Break The Ice.”

The discussion got so heated that some fans started saying that some songs weren’t freaky enough. “Someone said Piece of Me, and that is DEFINITELY not her nastiest or freakiest song. I guess the moaning in the song could be considered a little freaky, but compared to her other songs, it really isn’t.”
