Drew Goddard Reportedly Wants the Wachowskis’ Blessing Before Moving Forward With The Matrix 5

The next chapter of The Matrix may ultimately depend on the approval of the filmmakers who started it all.

Lilly Wachowski has revealed that filmmaker Drew Goddard, who is developing the next Matrix movie for Warner Bros., does not want to move forward with the project unless he receives the blessing of Lilly and her sister, Lana Wachowski.

Speaking with Kim Masters on KCRW’s The Business, Lilly discussed her current relationship with the franchise more than 25 years after she and Lana introduced audiences to The Matrix.

“Personally, I don’t wanna play in that sandbox anymore. I’m kinda done,”

Wachowski said.

However, that apparently does not mean she is completely disconnected from what happens next.

According to Wachowski, Goddard wants the sisters’ approval before taking the franchise in a new direction.

“There may be a thing that’s happening with Drew Goddard, and he doesn’t wanna go forward unless he gets our blessing,” Wachowski explained.

That could lead to Lilly and Lana taking at least a small look at what Goddard has planned before deciding whether they are comfortable giving him their approval.

“Maybe we’re gonna stick our noses in a tiny bit and see how we feel, and if we wanna pass on our blessing to Drew or not,” she added.

Warner Bros. announced in 2024 that Goddard would write and direct a new installment in The Matrix franchise, marking the first feature film in the series that will not be directed by either Wachowski. Lana Wachowski was announced as an executive producer on the project.

Goddard, whose credits include The Cabin in the Woods, The Martian and Project Hail Mary, has previously made it clear that he understands the responsibility that comes with taking over a franchise so closely associated with its original creators.

Earlier this year, Goddard confirmed that he was still writing the movie while remaining tight-lipped about the story and whether franchise stars such as Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss could return.

Lilly’s latest comments now provide a little more insight into what may be happening behind the scenes. While Warner Bros. remains interested in continuing The Matrix, Goddard appears determined to make sure the franchise’s creators are comfortable with his vision before he moves ahead.

For now, Wachowski says the situation remains “still unknown.”

The original Matrix debuted in 1999 and was followed by The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions in 2003. Lana Wachowski later returned without Lilly to direct 2021’s The Matrix Resurrections.

No release date has been announced for Goddard’s Matrix film.
