Eric Dane Reached A Breaking Point Before Death

Published

on

Eric Dane spent years playing the confident heartthrob on television, but away from the cameras, his life was far more complicated.

The actor’s final chapter was marked by illness, reconciliation, financial strain, and emotional honesty.

As ALS slowly took control of his body, Dane leaned on the people closest to him, including Rebecca Gayheart, despite their long separation.

Behind the fame was a man grappling with fear, regret, and the reality of leaving his daughters too soon.

Long before the public learned of Eric Dane’s illness, subtle physical changes had already begun.

What first seemed minor gradually became impossible to ignore. Still, those closest to him reportedly struggled to accept the seriousness of what was happening.

“When he started getting symptoms, they both made excuses to each other about them. The last thing either of them thought was that he was suffering from anything fatal,” an insider revealed to the Daily Mail

When doctors confirmed ALS in late 2023, the news was paralyzing. “When they finally got the terrifying news, they were in shock for days,” the source added.

Dane chose not to go public immediately. Instead, he processed the diagnosis quietly with his family.

By the time he shared his condition in April 2025, his inner circle had already begun preparing for a future they never imagined.

Eric Dane and Rebecca Gayheart had been separated for years, with divorce proceedings lingering since 2018. However, once ALS entered the picture, everything shifted.

The month before the “Grey’s Anatomy” star disclosed his illness publicly, Gayheart withdrew her divorce filing.

According to one source, “Rebecca has been by Eric’s side through his entire health battle.” The insider added, “She is a kind woman and has been nothing but loving to him during his darkest hours.”

Despite living separate lives, their bond endured. “There was a lot of love there,” the source explained.

Gayheart reportedly attended many of her husband’s medical appointments and helped shoulder the emotional weight for their daughters.

Watching his rapid decline was overwhelming. “Watching him deteriorate so rapidly took its toll on Rebecca big time,” another insider shared.

Even her relationship with businessman Peter Morton was affected. Though they had discussed a future together, Dane’s health crisis put those plans on hold.

Still, Morton remained supportive. “Peter is generous. If Rebecca has ever needed anything, he has been there,” a source said.

Eric Dane’s Financial Reality As ALS Progressed

While Dane had starred in seven seasons of “Grey’s Anatomy” and appeared in HBO’s “Euphoria,” ALS dramatically changed his earning power. The disease eventually left him wheelchair-bound and in need of full-time care.

Considering that treatment for ALS is notoriously expensive, especially when families seek top specialists, his finances took a big hit.

“He spent a fortune on getting the best doctors, which insurance doesn’t always cover, and he had to hire full-time care,” one insider revealed.

The source admitted, “I don’t know if I would say Eric was broke when he died, but I don’t think there was a lot of money in his bank account.”

In his final months, Dane reportedly lived in a Los Angeles property owned by Johnny Depp, staying rent-free to ease financial pressure.

For a man once at the height of network television fame, it was a humbling turn.

Meanwhile, Gayheart prioritized stability for their daughters, who had been living with her full-time for years.

Dane’s Long Battle With Addiction And Depression

ALS was not the first major struggle Eric Dane faced. Years earlier, his career had been rocked by addiction issues.

After initially achieving sobriety before joining “Grey’s Anatomy,” he later relapsed during the 2007 writers’ strike.

“I am not good with a lot of time on my hands,” he once admitted. In 2011, he entered rehab for prescription painkiller addiction.

Around the same time, he experienced severe depression. “That was a scary thing, when you wake up and you’re like: ‘I don’t want to get out of bed,’” he recalled during a 2017 appearance on “Today.”

Kurt Cobain’s Unexpected Feud With Guns N’ Roses Started With This Controversial Song

Published

on

Guns N' Roses

Nothing says the ‘90s like a deep running feud between two major artists. There are countless industry beefs that define the era, from 2Pac vs. Notorious B.I.G. to the Oasis‘ Gallagher brothers, Noel and Liam. However, the particular feud between Guns N’ Roses’ frontman Axl Rose and Nirvana’s frontman Kurt Cobain stands as one of the most critical of the time. Their major rock rivalry was fueled by clashing ideologies and a tense 1992 MTV VMA confrontation, where Rose ultimately threatened Cobain. Because of that, Cobain refused to have Nirvana support the Guns N’ Roses/Metallica stadium tour, disliking Rose to the point of considering the entire band “talentless.” The highly anticipated tour could have been legendary, yet both acts were unable to move forward from their disdain of one another. But while the feud has long been known and referenced, not many know the exact song that Cobain himself deemed Guns N’ Roses’ worst work, initiating much of his hatred for him and the band as a whole.

When it came to controversial songs, no track quite pushed the envelope the way that Guns N’ Roses’ “One in a Million” did. Released in 1988 on G N’ R Lies, it caused immediate controversy due to derogatory comments about the black community, members of lgbtq+ community, and immigrants. As a very public and vocal critic of Guns N’ Roses, Cobain specifically condemned Rose for just how offensive the track was. With Nirvana representing the opposite end of the rock spectrum, he despised the song’s racist and homophobic slurs, using it as a primary example of why he disliked the band entirely.

The Story Behind ‘One in a Million’

If there is anything embedded within the DNA of Guns N’ Roses, it’s that they were never afraid to go beyond the imposed boundaries and say whatever they deemed fit, even if it landed them on the “wrong” side of history. That’s why when Rose decided to write a song about his experience getting hustled at a Greyhound bus station when he first came to Los Angeles, he spared nothing when it came to potentially offensive lyrics.

Police and n*****s, that’s right, get outta my way

Don’t need to buy none of your gold chains today

Immigrants and f*****s, they make no sense to me

They come to our country, and think they’ll do as they please

Like start some mini-Iran, or spread some f*****g disease

And they talk so many goddamn ways, it’s all Greek to me

Radicals and racists, don’t point your finger at me

I’m a small town white boy just tryin’ to make ends meet

Don’t need your religion, don’t watch that much TV

Just makin’ my livin’, baby, well, that’s enough for me

Guns N' Roses

Guns N’ Roses Nearly Toured With This Iconic Band 30 Years Ago — And Even Recorded Songs With One Member

It could have been a clash of genres, but it wasn’t meant to be.

Given Cobain’s strong stance on feminism and social justice, the song most certainly didn’t land well with him. His disdain stemmed from how offensive and exclusionary he found its lyrics, which stood against everything he publicly championed as an artist. And of course, Cobain wasn’t the only one to find offense with the song. Most music critics found “One in a Million” to be an outright abomination, with an OC Register writer calling it “the most repellent slice of right-wing paranoia ever to be released by a major label.”

Nirvana vs Guns N’ Roses

So what was Rose’s response to the controversy? Without initially apologizing or taking much accountability for the slurs used, he defended the lyrics by claiming that they served as a reclamation of the rules imposed upon him. Rose later went on to clarify that he didn’t identify as a homophobic, insisting that some of his icons, including Freddie Mercury and Elton John, were bisexual or gay. He also issued an apology for those offended by the song, deeming the lyrics to be “simple and extremely generic.” Yet, the damage was done, and Cobain wasn’t finding much empathy in his heart to offer. Cobain’s criticism of Guns N’ Roses ran deep, rooted in a clashing of values rather than just a criticism of their music. “We’re not your typical Guns N’ Roses type of band that has absolutely nothing to say” he shared in a 1991 interview with Seconds magazine. Cobain stood against their macho posturing, sexism, and what he saw as exclusionary attitudes, leading to their rivalry to remain unresolved by the time of his tragic death in 1994.

Hilary Duffis done letting the negative narrative about her fly!

After Ashley Tisdale published a candid essay about being part of a parenting circle she described as toxic, fans speculated that the “Lizzie McGuire” alum was among those involved.

More than two months after the controversy went viral, drawing attention even from Duff’s estranged sister, the actress is finally setting the record straight.

The “How I Met Your Father” star addressed the controversy directly, making it clear that she’s no stranger to public scrutiny and that the rumors were unfounded.

“I mean, this is not new for me,” the 38-year-old told the Los Angeles Times in a new interview. “I’ve had this since I was maybe 15 and starting to get followed around by paparazzi.”

Duff explained that being in the spotlight meant every detail of her life was documented and dissected. As a result, stories about her often gain attention in ways most normal people never experience.

The singer added that social media escalated the story with clickbait spreading half-truths and lies.

“It’s hard because you’re like, ‘Wait, whoa, that person kind of got it right,’ and ‘Whoa, that person doesn’t know what they’re talking about,’” Duff said before recalling a narrative she saw that shocked her.

“I saw something that was like, ‘None of the moms at school actually like her and neither do the teachers,’ and I was like, ‘First of all…’” Duff dismissed before praising the women at school.

When asked how she shuts out the noise, Duff replied that it “depends on the day,” but she would normally do something relaxing, like take a hot tub.

Before Duff confronted the claims, those close to her already revealed that she felt she was wrongly represented in the “High School Musical” alum’s article.

According to The Blast, the source revealed that Duff and the other suspected moms felt hurt and shocked at the revelation, as their perspectives were not told in Tisdale’s story.

“The moms insist there was no ‘mean girl’ behavior and say they were genuinely trying to be there for one another during a really vulnerable time in all of their lives,” the insider shared.

The source added that the members of the group felt hurt by Tisdale going public, as whatever issue they had could have been settled privately.

Duff has since been candid about how she makes friends and maintains relationships with them.

Last November, in an appearance on the “Therapuss” podcast, the “Mature” singer confessed that her approach in her circles is to sort things out while avoiding conflict.

She went on to reflect on communication, acknowledging that having honest conversations about expectations after a rough patch could be overwhelming. Duff admitted to being in such situations but had to do them to avoid lingering tensions.

“I don’t want to make anyone feel bad by my actions. I’d rather have a conversation about it,” she shared, per The Blast

Jason Statham and Guy Ritchie’s Knockout Crime Caper Hits a Free Streamer Soon

Published

on

snatch-movie-poster.jpg

Last fall, Jason Statham and Guy Ritchie fans everywhere rejoiced when it was revealed that the actor and director would be reteaming for their sixth collaboration in the upcoming thriller flick Viva La Madness. After so many projects together, the duo have the hit-making business down to a science; consistently delivering audiences pulse-pounding, action-heavy stories with a hero we can truly believe in. Also featuring Matthew Vaughn, Jason Isaacs, Camila Mendes, Vinnie Jones and more, the movie will pull its story from J.J. Connell’s 2011 novel of the same name and will throw viewers into the chaotic world of a drug dealer (Statham) who finds himself caught up in a money laundering scheme. Yes, we know what you’re thinking: Classic Ritchie and Statham stuff.

The two men have been working together since 1998, when they both broke ground through Ritchie’s cult classic Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. In the nearly three decades since, they’ve reunited numerous times to drive box office sales through the roof and become true masters of the genre. Tragically, it’s already been a few years since their schedules crossed over, with their most recent film, Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre, exploding into cinemas back in 2023. That simply means that we’re far overdue for another Statham and Ritchie collaboration.

While you’re waiting for all hell to break loose in Viva La Madness, a free streamer will be able to hold you over and kick it back to the beginning as, beginning on February 28, Tubi will become the home base for Ritchie and Statham’s star-studded action thriller, Snatch. Not only is Snatch the sophomore feature for both the actor and director, but it also boasts an incredible starring lineup that, in addition to Statham, includes Brad Pitt, Stephen Graham, Alan Ford, Benicio del Toro, Dennis Farina, Bobbie Gee and more. Sticking to his gangster-centered bread and butter, Ritchie dives back into the criminal underworld through his second production in a story that follows two different narratives and is bursting at the seams with unforgettable characters.

‘Snatch’ Launched Guy Ritchie and Jason Statham to New Heights

As if the success of Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels wasn’t enough, Snatch came onto the scene and proved Ritchie wasn’t just a one-hit wonder. Against its $10 million production budget, the film raked in a staggering $83.6 million and received largely favorable reviews from critics. It also helped solidify the Ritchie and Statham partnership, which would allow them to move forward with numerous titles in the future.

Head over to Tubi on February 28 to stream Snatch.

A ‘Yellowstone’ Star’s Forgotten Crime Thriller Is Getting a Second Chance on Streaming

Published

on

Wes Bentley looking concerned in a suit and tie in 'After the Fall'

Ryan Murphy‘s long and controversial expanding list of television projects doesn’t look set to slow down anytime soon. Earlier this month, Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette debuted to positive reviews from both audiences and critics, as Murphy tries to shake off some of the backlash from his ongoing Monster anthology. Next in line for the prolific producer is an adaptation of the Bret Easton Ellis novel The Shards, which reportedly began filming back in November.

Starring in Murphy’s next project is Wes Bentley, who is set to portray Terry, the father of Debbie, who will be played by Hayes Warner. Best known for his recurring role as Jamie Dutton in Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone, Bentley is no stranger to a Murphy project, having featured in a trio of American Horror Story installments. Ahead of his next starring role, one of Bentley’s more divisive projects from the past fifteen years is about to head to a new streaming site.

Directed by two-time Academy Award-nominated editor Saar Klein, After the Fall is a 2014 drama that is often compared to the mammoth hit series Breaking Bad. Alas, this comparison is not in quality but in story, with the Bentley-led movie following “An insurance adjuster throws morality to the wind and turns to a life of crime to support his family.” As of March 1, 2026, you can catch After the Fall on Starz in the U.S., as it joins the likes of Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio‘s Gangs of New York, Sicario: Day of the Soldado, James Cameron’s record-breaking Titanic, and more on the platform.

‘After the Fall’ Faced Backlash When It Arrived

Despite featuring the talent of Bentley in the lead role, After the Fall faced plenty of backlash from audiences and critics when it debuted in 2014. This is illustrated best on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, where critics awarded it a 36% score, and audiences gave a woeful 25%. In one review, critic Robert Abele wrote:

“Yes, we’re living in a post-Breaking Bad era of morally squishy male antiheroes, so when co-writer and director Saar Klein has jobless New Mexico insurance adjuster Bill (Wes Bentley) try to keep the family afloat by way of an off-the-cuff robbery spree, comparisons to TV’s geek kingpin Walter White haunt every scene like burn-in on a flat screen.”

After the Fall will be available to stream on Starz this March. Stay tuned to Collider for more streaming stories.

Team USA had the full support of the Gaudreau family at the 2026 Winter Olympics.

Johnny Gaudreau’s widow, Meredith Gaudreau, and his parents were spotted in the crowd during the men’s hockey semifinal matchup against Slovakia on Friday, February 20. (Team USA ultimately won the game, advancing to the gold medal championship round against Canada on Sunday, February 22.)

“You should be here, John, and I’m so sorry you aren’t,” Meredith wrote via her Instagram Stories later on Friday. “So proud of you and your legacy.”

Meredith also shared a sweet pic of daughter Noa, 3, decked out in Team USA gear and holding an American flag before the game in Milan, Italy. (In addition to Noa, Meredith and Johnny shared sons Johnny Jr., 2, and Carter, 10 months.)

Already so strong and so special,” Meredith wrote via Instagram on Saturday, February 22. “‘I can’t believe you gave me a boy,’ is all John said over […]

Johnny, a forward for the Columbus Blue Jackets and a favorite for the 2026 Olympic hockey team, died in an August 2024 accident at the age of 31. “The Columbus Blue Jackets are shocked and devastated by this unimaginable tragedy,” the Ohio hockey team said in a statement at the time. “Johnny was not only a great hockey player, but more significantly a loving father, son, brother and friend.”

The statement concluded, “We extend our heartfelt sympathies to his wife, Meredith, his children Noa and Johnny, his parents, their family and friends on the sudden death of Johnny and Matthew.”

Tom Schwartz is one of the newest cast members to join Bravo’s hit reality series, “The Valley,” and he couldn’t be more excited about his next chapter.

For those unfamiliar, Tom Schwartz was one of the marquee players of the original “Vanderpump Rules,” which also consisted of cast members Tom Sandoval, Jax Taylor, Stassi Schroeder, and Scheana Shay.

Tom Schwartz Is Excited For His Second Act On Bravo As The Newest Full-Time Cast Member Of ‘The Valley’

Speaking with BravoTV during a recent Q&A, Schwartz said his return to Bravo “feels so good,” adding that returning to the small screen as part of “The Valley” truly “feels like a rebirth in the most organic way.”

“It doesn’t feel like I’m casted on a new show, you know what I mean? It feels like they just picked up cameras with a different group of friends who I all know and love,” he said.

Season 3 of “The Valley” kicks off on April 1, 2026, and will feature many of the first two seasons’ OGs, such as Brittany Cartwright, Kristen Doute, Danny Booko, Nia Booko, Jason Caperna, Janet Caperna, Jasmine Goode, Jesse Lally, Michelle Saniei, and Zack Wickham.

It’s been some time since Bravo watchers have gotten an in-depth look into Schwartz’s life since being fired from “VPR.”

According to him, in “The Valley,” viewers will see an entirely different side of the bar owner.

“I’m starting life over in my 40s, and you get to see that, how that looks,” he said. “And, also, you get to see me in the early stages of kind of falling in love, which is super intimate.”

Schwartz’s season 3 bio teases that cameras will also capture the veteran reality star as he navigates drama emerging in his relationships with his longtime friends.

“After a few tumultuous years, Tom is eager to settle down and find his forever person, even testing the waters within the friend group,” the bio read. “When a promising romantic interest comes into play, his friends question the validity of the relationship and his dating choices, creating friction for him in the friend group.”

Tom Schwartz Wasn’t Sure About Joining ‘The Valley’ As A Full-Time Cast Member At First

A previous report from The Blast reveals that Schwartz wasn’t so sure about joining the “Valley” cast in a full-time capacity. Last year, the Bravo staple said that he believed producers were trying to decide if the show really needed more players.

“… they want to keep — this is my interpretation — ‘The Valley’ pure,” he said. “I think it is good the way it is.”

The network decided to go in a different direction for the next round of episodes, and after catching the season 3 super teaser online, Schwartz posted on Instagram to celebrate the special occasion.

Schwartz Hit A Rough Spot In His Friendship With Sandoval, Points To Their Failed Bar, ‘Schwartz & Sandy’s’

Another report from The Blast details Schwartz’s complicated relationship with one of his best friends, Sandoval.

On “Vanderpump Rules,” the pair were filmed opening two bars, “TomTom” and “Schwartz & Sandy’s.”

The latter, however, was forced to close following a decline in bar traffic due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the backlash Sandoval received after being exposed for cheating on his partner of 10 years, Ariana Madix, with her then-best friend.

“Unfortunately, the current climate for this business is pretty rough,” Schwartz said in 2024. “Recovering from all the negativity post-scandal wasn’t easy, and the slimmer margins post-COVID made it even harder to bounce back. There’s not a lot of room for error in the restaurant/bar business.”

“It’s already a tough business, and the damage from relentless negative press over the last year made it even harder,” he added. “It was difficult not to feel resentful and bitter, but eventually, we had to let it go — no more replaying what went wrong.”

Claressa Shields Says Franchon Crews-Dezurn Head-Butted Her

Claressa and Franchon Crews-Dezurn popped out in Detroit on Saturday for their weigh-in. Their fight is going down tomorrow night at the city’s Little Caesars Arena, but the ladies brought the heat to the weigh-in. Standing face to face in their fur coats, the videos show the boxers getting close enough for their foreheads to touch! That only lasted a few seconds, though, as Claressa Shields shoved Franchon back a few steps.

From the clip, Shields had her face scrunched up, yelling over a sea of people between them who were trying to calm the heat! The boxers didn’t get close after that.

Within hours of the incident, Claressa Shields hopped on social media to clear the air, accusing Franchon Crews-Dezurn of attempting to throw their fight. In a tweet, she wrote, “Who TF head butts someone at weigh in!!!! Damn right she got pushed! She’s trying to throw the fight.” Additionally, in a livestream, Shields claimed that she’s been “so professional all this time,” even slapping on her Faith Evans’ wig for the event! She shared a “lesson” for all the female boxers: don’t ever in your *MF* life walk up on the GWOAT to head butt her—those were her words. Also, Shields said that when Fronchon walked up to her, the brim hit her on the head, and she let it slide.

“If you don’t get the hell up off me,” Claressa said. She also popped off on someone named Glenn,  accusing him of trying to get involved and warning that Papoose would’ve “knocked his a** out.” She added, “My baby would’ve torn your a** up.”

Kayla Nicole has made headlines for her recent reflection on her failed relationship with football star Travis Kelce, nearly four years after their split.

The podcaster made a viral appearance on a TikTok livestream with “Love Island” Ace Greene, where she was asked the reason why she and the Kansas City Chiefs tight end didn’t work.

“Who knows? Could be compatibility issues, right person, wrong time,” she replied, per the DailyMail.

She was then asked when her last relationship was, to which she said, “Probably, like, three years ago now. It’s been a long time.”

Reports suggest the pair started dating around 2017 after connecting via Instagram, and dated on and off for five years until they eventually called it quits in 2022.

The Influencer Got Roasted On Social Media For Her Recent Remarks

Nicole’s latest comments about Kelce have since gone viral across social media, sparking varying reactions from netizens on X (formerly Twitter) and TikTok.

One viral clip slammed Nicole for saying Kelce was the “right person” a few months after shading him with a Halloween video in which she performed to Toni Braxton’s song, “He Wasn’t Man Enough.”

“Tell me you can’t move on without telling me you can’t move on. Meanwhile, Travis and Taylor are out there living life and minding their own business,” one person wrote about the media personality’s comment.

Another said, “Doesn’t make sense. She spoke down to him and looked annoyed at times to be with him. She just now thinks he was the right guy!”

“Right person, wrong time, because she knew she had a good man, but wasn’t mature enough to be in a relationship,” a fourth TikTok user commented.

Nicole has come under fire severely for her continued comments about her broken-down relationship with Kelce, with fans accusing her of always making reference to it in order to stay relevant.

She recently garnered backlash as she appeared to shade him in a 2026 Super Bowl ad for the brand Sleeper.

As reported by The Blast, in the ad, comedian Tiffany Haddish and NBA star Ben Simmons, who were promoting their business “Simmons and Haddish,” featured as a team that helps people get “excommunicated” from their exes following a celebrity breakup.

Nicole, who was addressed in the ad by name and was referred to as the “Ex of a certain NFL player,” said Simmons and Haddish promised her that they could “put an end to this whole ‘ex-girlfriend’ fiasco quickly,” referencing her past relationship with Kelce.

However, Simmons interjected, “That doesn’t sound right,” before Nicole suggested “Rapidly.”

The basketball star insisted he never used the adjective before correcting her, saying, “I said swiftly, why is that so hard to remember?” appearing to reference Kelce’s fiancée, Swift.

Many critics, particularly Swifties, took to social media to call her out following the perceived shade.

“I’m convinced she doesn’t have any friends cuz my friends wouldn’t let me crash out like this after 4 years,” someone wrote.

Netflix’s Stellar Award-Winning 7-Part Thriller Miniseries Keeps Getting Better

Sometimes, when a television series becomes super popular, it can then lose some of its luster. Shows that are beloved by fans and critics can sometimes experience a bit of a fall from grace when the criticisms start to roll in. Series such as The Bear and Game of Thrones come to mind as victims of this trend. However, there are still examples of exceptional shows that just keep getting better with time. One award-winning Netflix miniseries certainly falls into this category, and is still earning kudos today.

What Is ‘Baby Reindeer’ About?

In April 2024, Netflix released a seven-episode limited series called Baby Reindeer. At first, the show seemed like it would fly under the radar, with no prior IP to drum up interest and no big-name stars. However, word-of-mouth quickly spread that the series was, in fact, something truly special. The story is about an aspiring comedian named Donny Dunn (Richard Gadd) who meets a woman named Martha (Jessica Gunning) while he’s working as a bartender. At first, he thinks Martha just might be a tad odd, but when he offers her a friendly complimentary cup of tea, Martha latches onto Donny, inciting stalking patterns that systematically threaten to ruin Donny’s life.

Martha’s intense and abusive behaviors include emailing Donny hundreds of times a day, ruining his relationship with his girlfriend, Terri (Nava Mau), and messing with Donny’s confidence (an essential aspect of being a stand-up comedian). Martha is somehow both terrifying and pathetic, and her connection to Donny becomes a twisted, toxic cycle. Donny must try to break away from Martha, while also examining a past sexual assault that he’s never truly dealt with which might be affecting why he’s become even more intertwined with the dangerous Martha. The most intriguing part of the entire miniseries is that, although dramatized to some degree, Baby Reindeer is based on real events that Gadd himself experienced.

‘Baby Reindeer’ Offers Several Astounding Performances

The series is already remarkable in how it brings Gadd’s experiences to life. But Baby Reindeer also becomes a must-watch because of the incredible performances. Gadd has written the series so that you immediately feel entrapped in Donny’s world, and Gadd infuses the role with a brutal authenticity and an honesty that allows us to truly experience all the complex emotions Donny holds. Collider‘s Therese Lacson noted in her review that Gadd “gives his all in every scene…the unabashed way the narration interrogates his inner thoughts, mixed with the way Donny presents himself and his slow physical deterioration over the time of the stalking, make the show memorable.” Gadd is able to convey the harsh, lingering effects of trauma (both of his prior assault and with Martha’s stalking) so that we understand how life-altering and truly damaging these types of acts of intrusive violence can be.

As impressive as Gadd’s performance is, Baby Reindeer’s success can largely be attributed to Gunning’s multi-faceted portrayal of Martha. With a lesser actor, Martha could have come across as a mere caricature — a dowdy woman who develops a crush and then takes it way too far. She could have been depicted as unhinged or overly dramatic. Instead, Gunning allows us to see all sides of Martha. She’s not only driven by her obsession, she’s also a woman who has experienced countless examples of disappointment and heartbreak that have resulted in a fractured psyche. This allows the viewer to develop a bizarre sympathy for a character who would otherwise be classified as a frightening villain. Gunning expertly demonstrates that even antagonists are devastatingly human at the end of the day.

It’s no surprise that Baby Reindeer quickly became beloved by critics for its original storytelling and extraordinary performances. It then took home 11 Emmy nominations and six wins, including ones for Outstanding Limited Series and Writing, and statues for Gadd and Gunning. But even after the Emmy ceremony took place, Baby Reindeer continues to live up to the prestige, with a 99% Rotten Tomatoes score. Although the series has been met with a bit of controversy (a woman claiming to be the real Martha has launched lawsuits against Netflix since the show’s release), Baby Reindeer is worthy of a binge-watch for anyone looking for a haunting thriller that examines the dark and complicated sides of humanity.
