Widow’s Bay has been the surprise breakout hit of 2026. The AppleTV original series manages to combine humor with horror vibes in a way that’s unlike anything else in years. Matthew Rhys as Mayor Tom does a fantastic job delivering the dry humor that keeps everything grounded, while Kate O’Flynn as his assistant, Patricia, steals the show, including an episode all about her dinner party gone horribly, horribly wrong. Fans are now stuck waiting for Season 2, so to pass the time, why not fire up Dredge, a horror fishing game about navigating strange islands with strange people and something much darker lurking under the surface?

Dredge Is As Unique As Widow’s Bay

The Award-Winning Dredge Was One Of The Best Games of 2023

Dredge came out in 2023, and like Widow’s Bay, was an unexpected hit thanks to its strange mishmash of genres. Fishing horror? How would that work? Like the series, Dredge relies on atmosphere and the creeping sensation that something isn’t right. By day, it’s peaceful and serene, by night, the horrors come out, though you never quite see them. There’s very large, dark shadows under the surface of the water and one grotto that puts the monsters front and center, but for the most part, it’s all about the vibes.

The odd residents of Widow’s Bay and strange history of the island are a never ending source of amusement. Remember, there was no cannibalism. Dredge doesn’t have the exact sort of dry humor though it does have eccentric island residents and a historical mystery you start to uncover, whether you want to or not, between fishing trips. Letters found in bottles tell a story of the past through the eyes of a young, newly married woman similar to the 1702 founding of the island community. Each ends differently, but there’s striking similarities that will scratch the same itch.

More Dredge And More Widow’s Bay On The Way

A film adaptation of Dredge was announced in 2024 and is reportedly still in the works. The game’s simple gameplay loop of fish, sell for a profit, upgrade the boat, and explore a world where it’s slightly off, led to the game selling over a million copies. Like Widow’s Bay, it was a hit no one saw coming.

Widow’s Bay Season 2 was announced following the airing of the first season finale. With how the season ended, fans would burn down Apple’s headquarters if they didn’t get more episodes. While an answer as to what’s really going on with the island would be great for fans, honestly, they want more Patricia. You don’t get to give fans a sequence like she had with The Boogeyman serial killer and then stop. How the writers will top themselves next season is the real question hanging over Season 2.

Sunless Sea Is A More Hardcore Experience

Dredge is available on every platform, even mobile, so you’ll get your Lovecraftian haunted ocean vibes on the go. If you give it a shot and like it, there’s also Sunless Sea from 2015, available for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One, which is a more hardcore narrative-driven survival exploration game. But if you like the haunted, Lovecraftian-inspired sea journeys with strange worlds to visit and stranger people that live there, there’s not a lot of options out there in the gaming world.

Widow’s Bay Season 1 is available to stream exclusively on AppleTV.
