Hayden Panettiere’s Death Shows No Signs of Foul Play, Police Say
Actress Hayden Panettiere’s death remains under investigation, but authorities say there are currently no indications of foul play or suspicious circumstances surrounding her passing.
Panettiere, best known for her roles in Heroes, Nashville and the Scream franchise, died Sunday, August 16, at the age of 36. According to the Greenville Police Department in South Carolina, an acquaintance discovered the actress unresponsive and called 911.
“The preliminary investigation has not indicated any signs of foul play or suspicious circumstances,” police said in a statement. The investigation is being conducted by the Greenville Police Department alongside the Greenville County Coroner’s Office.
Emergency responders were called to the scene at approximately 1:50 p.m. Sunday. Panettiere was pronounced dead at the scene despite efforts by emergency personnel to revive her. An official cause of death has not yet been released.

Panettiere’s representative confirmed her death in a statement issued on behalf of her father.
“It is with profound sadness that we share the tragic passing of our beloved Hayden,” the statement read. Her father remembered her as “an incredible light and a force of nature” who brought joy to both those who knew her personally and millions of fans around the world.
Panettiere began acting as a child before becoming widely recognized for playing Claire Bennet on NBC’s Heroes. She later starred as Juliette Barnes on Nashville, a performance that earned her two Golden Globe nominations. Her film credits included Remember the Titans, Scream 4 and Scream VI.
Her final film role came in the 2026 psychological thriller Sleepwalker.
Panettiere is survived by her daughter, Kaya. Her younger brother, actor Jansen Panettiere, died in 2023 at the age of 28.
Authorities have not announced when additional findings from the investigation or an official cause of death will be released.
