HBO Max Is Quietly Dropping a Forgotten Sci-Fi Thriller That Divided Viewers

Published

on

Sci-fi movies are often at their best when taking the fears of today and turning them into the reality of tomorrow. From Arnold Schwarzenegger‘s T-800 disturbing a 1980s world afraid of the rise of machines in The Terminator to the existential crisis realized into glorious dystopia in The Matrix, sci-fi thrives on tapping into the cultural zeitgeist. Likened by some to filmmaker Terry Gilliam‘s 12 Monkeys, a divisive 2024 movie that finds angst for the future through genre-bending, is about to join a new streaming site and might just be your next favorite sci-fi flick.

Asif Kapadia‘s 2073, a film that had a short and unremarkable theatrical run, is heading to HBO Max on February 1, 2026. The director of the Oscar-winning Amy Winehouse documentary combined with stars Samantha Morton and The Man Who Killed Don Quixote writer Tony Grisoni, to bring this sci-fi movie to life, although it sadly faced plenty of backlash upon arrival. On review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, 2073 could only muster a disappointing 49% from critics and 43% from audiences, with the consensus on the site reading, “2073 is visually striking and occasionally haunting, but its preachy tone, derivative dystopian tropes, and air of exhausted fatalism leave it more dispiriting than entertaining.” A synopsis for 2073 reads:

“It’s the year 2073, and the worst fears of modern life have been realized. Surveillance drones fill the burnt orange skies and militarized police roam the wrecked streets, while survivors hide away underground, struggling to remember a free and hopeful existence. In this ingenious mixture of visionary science fiction and speculative nonfiction, Academy Award-winning filmmaker Asif Kapadia transports us to a future foreshadowed by the terrifying realities of our present moment. Two-time Academy Award nominee Samantha Morton plays a survivor besieged by nightmare visions of the past–a past that happens to be our present, visualized through contemporary footage interconnecting today’s global crises of authoritarianism, unchecked big tech, inequality, and global climate change. 2073 is an urgent, unshakable vision of a dystopic future that could very well be our own.”

What Is Currently Topping the HBO Max Streaming Charts?

2073 will be hoping to make a small dent in the HBO Max streaming ranks this February, but it poses little threat to the top of the charts. This is in part due to the lack of hype around the movie, but it is also because of the vast number of beloved titles, classic or new, that are also on the streamer. At the time of writing, the most-watched movie on HBO Max in the U.S. is the sports drama The Smashing Machine starring Dwayne Johnson.

2073 is streaming on HBO Max this February. Stay tuned to Collider for more streaming stories.

New ‘Super Mario Galaxy Movie’ Leak Teases the Arrival of a Villainous Favorite

Published

Only a few months remain until The Super Mario Galaxy Movie‘s theatrical release, and its plot may have accidentally leaked. This Nintendo Illumination feature will have Mario (Chris Pratt and the gang go beyond the Mushroom Kingdom as Bowser Jr. (Benny Safdie) sets out to rescue his father, Bowser (Jack Black). But according to this leaked plot, there could be more to this rescue mission.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is based on the Super Mario Galaxy video game series, released in 2007. The film features the return of the first film’s original cast members, like Chris Pratt‘s Mario, Jack Black‘s Bowser, Anya Taylor-Joys Princess Peach, and Charlie Day‘s Luigi, but it also introduces new characters, like Princess Rosalina, played by Brie Larson, and Bowser Jr., voiced by Benny Safdie. Nintendo and Illumination have released a handful of teasers and trailers, showcasing the Mario cinematic universe expanding with new locations and creatures, as well as some returning faces like Yoshi. But according to this latest plot, another iconic Mario character could be making its cinematic debut.

According to Polygon, the London-based cinema chain Everyman released a now-edited description for the Super Mario Galaxy Movie. It teased that Bowser Jr. has an ally in this latest feature, and that their goal is “world domination.” This character has never been shown in any of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie‘s promotional material to date, and its voice actor has yet to be revealed. As of writing, the plot description in question has been wiped, but this is what it said on the website beforehand:

“After defeating Bowser and saving Brooklyn, Mario faces Wario and Bowser Jr.’s evil alliance. Now, alongside his friends and Yoshi, he must stop their plans for world domination.”

Wario’s appearance has yet to be fully confirmed. However, back in 2023, Black pitched in an interview that he wants Pedro Pascal to voice the popular character and be the villain in the sequel. He said:

“You know, what if there is a more powerful, more evil villain? Then I may need to be turned to help Mario and the rest to defend our universe against some other unseen force of evil. Are you thinking what I’m thinking? Wario! Pedro Pascal is Wario.”

Who is Wario in ‘The Super Mario Bros.’ Franchise?

Wario is a character in Nintendo’s Mario franchise, who made his debut in 1992 in the Game Boy game Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins. The character is known for his yellow outfit with purple overalls, with a hat with the letter “W” on it, and is seen as either an anti-hero or an antagonist in the franchise. Just like Mario, Charles Martinet voiced the character from 1993 to 2023. Alongside his Mario appearance, Wario has appeared in other games, including the Wario Land titles, the Super Smash Bros franchise, and Yoshi’s Island DS, just to name a few. Just like Mario has Luigi, Wario has his own parter in crime with Waluigi, though the appearance of either of them in the new film remains to be seen.

Before his demise, Carradine was working on what would be his last project, titled “The Driver,” AKA “Driving into Darkness.”

According to director Connie Lamothe, she felt something was wrong with the actor when he was absent from a table read days earlier.

Lamothe told TMZ she began seeing signs as far back as January when Carradine went “radio silent,” sparking great concerns from producers. No one knew about his whereabouts.

However, given his mental health struggles, a close friend in the cast suggested the late actor be given some space in the hopes he would return to the set. Unfortunately, that never happened.

Lamothe, who is devastated by the loss, recalled how excited the Hollywood veteran was about the crime drama where he played a mob boss.
