Homeowner Killed By Tenant in Apparent Murder-Suicide

A homeowner and her tenant were found dead inside their shared Pleasanton, California, in an apparent murder-suicide, authorities confirmed.

Officers responded to the home around 7:16 p.m. on Wednesday, August 26, according to a Thursday, August 29, press release from the Pleasanton Police Department. Authorities reported to the home after receiving a request for a welfare check after a local resident reported that he was unable to contact his neighbors for several days.

When the responding officers entered the home, they found a woman who had been shot multiple times. They then found a man who was also dead in another room. Police said that both the man and woman appeared to have died several days before their bodies were discovered.

The woman has since been identified as Shelly Wang, the owner of the home. The man was identified as Evgeniy Ilin. Police said Ilin, 39, was Wang’s tenant and was renting a room from her in the home.

It’s currently believed that Ilin fatally shot Wang, 64, before he allegedly died by suicide.

Police do not have a possible motive for Ilin’s actions at the time of publication. However, investigators said they believe the murder-suicide was an isolated incident and assured members of the community that there is no threat to the public.

Authorities asked that anyone with information regarding the case contact the Pleasanton Police Department at 925-931-5100.

No additional details about Wang and Ilin’s relationship have been shared, including information regarding their dynamic, how long they lived together or if they had a history of roommate disputes.

The investigation into the case remains ongoing as police work to determine what happened inside the home leading up to the murder-suicide. The Pleasanton Police Department did not immediately respond to Us’ request for comment.

After the police department shared news of the murder-suicide on Facebook, several people took to the comments section to express their condolences over the situation.

“So sad… condolences to their families,” one person wrote alongside a praying hands emoji and a dove emoji. Meanwhile, several people shared crying emojis under the police department’s announcement on Instagram.
