Netflix Has Courtney Cox’s Raunchiest Comedy
By Chris Snellgrove
| Published

A raunchy, critically reviled comedy from the ‘90s became a breakout smash hit, transforming a relatively unknown comedian into one of the hottest names in Hollywood. That film was Ace Ventura: Pet Detective (1994), a grossout movie so weirdly beloved that it spawned its own quirky franchise. To see where that franchise (not to mention Carrey’s career) got its start, be sure to stream this modern comedy classic on Netflix today!
The premise of Ace Ventura: Pet Detective is that the titular PI is a kooky animal wrangler who specializes in tracking down missing pets. He gets hired to find a dolphin stolen from the Miami Dolphins, and he has to deliver results before the upcoming Super Bowl. Along the way, he’ll mingle with the rich, schmooze with the beautiful, and generally charm his way into and out of the craziest situations Miami has ever seen.
The Movie That Created A Superstar

The cast of Ace Ventura: Pet Detective is small and eclectic, featuring Friends icon Courtney Cox as a publicist for the Miami Dolphins. Speaking of the Dolphins, Dan Marino plays himself, and horror legend Udo Kier plays a tycoon as wealthy as he is eccentric. But the real star of the show is Jim Carrey, who managed to parlay this impressive feature film debut into a lifelong Hollywood career based solely on the strength of his manic and maniacal performance.
Jim Carrey’s powerhouse performance generated serious word of mouth, and Ace Ventura: Pet Detective ended up earning $107.2 million against a budget of only $15 million. This made a follow-up film downright inevitable, and we eventually got two sequels (one with Carrey, one without) and a children’s cartoon. In 2021, a new sequel was officially announced, though whether Carrey will appear or whether this film will even see the light of day (it’s been about half a decade since we’ve had any real updates) remains unknown.
The Critics Take Aim

Incredibly, reviewers generally hated Ace Ventura: Pet Detective when it came out, and the film has a stunningly low 47 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics generally griped about the rubberfaced antics and potty humor of leading man Jim Carrey, believing that he overpowers the entire film with his larger-than-life presence. However, they noted that the movie would prove popular with Carrey’s fans because it is chock full of the wacky humor that soon became his trademark.
It may go without saying, but Ace Ventura: Pet Detective has had a major cultural impact that far exceeds its low Rotten Tomatoes score. This was one of the comedy touchstones of the ‘90s, and youngsters of that era spent far too much time and energy showing off their impressions of Carrey. Make no mistake; he whirled into Hollywood with the force of a hurricane, and no film (comedy or otherwise) was ever quite the same after his whirlwind debut.
Falling In Love With A Shady New Character

The reviewers are right about one thing, though: how much you enjoy this film is going to come down to how much you enjoy Carrey’s unique brand of humor. I was relatively young when Ace Ventura: Pet Detective premiered in theaters, but I was already familiar with Carrey thanks to his performance as Fire Marshall Bill on In Living Color. That variety show (which doesn’t get nearly enough love, in my opinion) showcased Carrey’s ability to transform a one-note punchline into an ongoing shtick, and there was always something mesmerizing about watching him disappear into a role like this.
Ace Ventura: Pet Detective is Jim Carrey unleashed, and he throws himself into this bizarre new role with even more gusto than he ever approached In Living Color. It’s a movie filled with punchlines, and Carrey imbues each one with more funny faces and sound effects than you’ll find in the entire Policy Academy franchise. His brand of humor isn’t for everyone, but considering that Ace Ventura became a successful franchise and Carrey became a Hollywood legend, it’s fair to say that general moviegoers loved what he was selling.

Will you love what Jim Carrey has to offer in Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, or is this one raunchy ‘90s comedy that you’d rather see stuck in the past? You won’t know until you stream this career-making cult classic for yourself on Netflix. Remember, though: if you start uncontrollably talking like Ace Ventura after the credits roll, we won’t be held responsible for what your family does to you!

Britney Spears Sells Rights To Her Music Catalog
Britney Spears just let a chunk of herself go, for some impressive dollar bills in return!
The star reportedly sold off the rights to her music catalog to a music publisher a few months back, joining a growing list of musical talents who have parted ways with their catalogs in recent years.
Britney Spears’ crucial business decision comes nearly five years after she was released from her 13-year-long conservatorship by a Los Angeles Superior Court judge.

Inside Britney Spears’ New Mouth-Watering Deal

Legal documents from the business deal revealed that the musician agreed to sell her ownership share of hits to the music publishing company, Primary Wave.
It remains undisclosed how much the legendary musician was paid in this deal, but sources from the inside have likened it to Justin Bieber’s payment from selling catalog.
As noted by TMZ, the documents from the transaction confirmed that Spears, currently managed by Cade Hudson, inked the deal on the 30th of December. She is reportedly very content and happy with the sale and has been celebrating with some mommy time with the kids.
Spears’ hit tracks like “Baby One More Time,” “Break The Ice,” “I Wanna Go,” “I’m a Slave 4 U,” “Sometimes,” “Womanizer,” “Toxic,” and a host of others now belong to the Primary Wave company.

The Grammy Winner’s Journey Into The World Of Fame

Spears broke into the limelight at the young age of 16 with” Baby One More Time,” produced by Max Martin in 1998. According to the producer, Spears’ young age inspired him to work with her because he felt he could channel her qualities appropriately and make her a superstar.
According to TIME, she grew up in Kentwood, Los Angeles, and had appeared on Broadway and on “Star Search,” which also featured stars like Christina Aguilera, Keri Russell, and Ryan Gosling.
From her debut as a teenager in 1999, the star’s path has been filled with monster hits and several career controversies, which she bounced back from beautifully.

One of the highlights of her career was during her 2007 MTV Awards performance of “Gimme More,” where she sleepwalked and, from there, went on to deal with personal challenges, which were exacerbated by unending tabloids.
Spears had explained later that she was suffering from a panic attack, a broken heel, and extreme stress days leading up to that performance.
The star’s music has definitely served as a backdrop on which several pop stars of this century built their careers, like Olivia Rodrigo, Tate McRae, Addison Rae, Kim Petras, and many more.

Britney Spears Joins A Long List Of Artists Who Sold Their Music Catalogs

As shared by Yahoo!, in 2024, the rock band KISS sold their entire music catalog, brand name, and intellectual property, including their makeup and personas, to the Swedish company, Pophouse Entertainment, for approximately $300 million.
Justin Bieber was not the only artist who sold 100% of his music catalog in 2023; pop icon Katy Perry also made a similar move by selling her stake in her master and publishing rights in the same year for $225 million.
Perry’s five albums, which she released between 2008 and 2020, now have Litmus Music Company as their new home. As 2020 headed to a close, Universal Music closed off an iconic music deal by purchasing Bob Dylan’s entire catalog of over 600 songs for more than $300 million.

He then sold his recording catalog to Sony Music the following year for $200 million, bringing his total earnings in music sales to half a billion dollars. Bruce Springsteen also got $500 million richer from selling his master recordings and publishing rights to Sony in 2021.
The Performer Is In A Rocky Place With Members Of Her Family

Spears drew the battle line with her family in 2021 when she testified against her father for being abusive while she was under his care during her conservatorship.
As shared by The Blast, the actress revealed that her father urged her to work against her wish, barred her from removing her IUD to have another child, and forced her to attend rehab and take lithium.
The singer’s mother and sister were not left out of her claims. Spears accused them of watching her go through this abuse with folded arms, with full knowledge that she was being controlled in the conservatorship.
The singer and her sister, Jamie Lynn Spears, even embarked on a full memoir war where the musician accused her sister of capitalizing on her misery in her memoir “The Woman In Me.”

Britney Spears Is Working On Reconnecting With Her Estranged Sons

Since regaining freedom from her conservatorship, the media personality has worked to fix so many things in her life, including her relationship with her children, Sean Preston and Jayden James.
The singer welcomed her two sons with her ex, Kevin Federline, and during the divorce, he filed for full custody of the kids, which he won based on providing them with a stable environment. It was also in the same year that Spears was thrown into her conservatorship program.
By 2024, Spears reunited with Jayden, and they spent quality time in Los Angeles, which she celebrated by posting a picture of her son on her Instagram.
Last year, her estranged husband confirmed that Spears and her sons were sorting out their relationship, and they have always loved their mother. Federline stressed that it has remained his wish for years that the boys get closer to the singer, and now it is happening.
Congratulations, Britney Spears!

“Sometimes I get on that stage, and I have a little drink, and I go wild … I’m non-filtered. Just wanted to apologize,” he added.
For those who might’ve missed it, Epps ignited a firestorm when he threw shade at Minaj during a recent show.

Social media users weighed in on Epps’ jabs at Minaj, laughing along with the actor and throwing shade at Minaj in the process.
“Deserved,” one user wrote. “More celebrities should heckle her dumb*ss.”
Another user said that Minaj should think twice before clapping back at Epps after seeing his comments.
Other users, however, took issue with Epps’ words about Minaj, with one suggesting the comedian would never disrespect Minaj in person.
Another user attempted to encourage Minaj to sue Epps and any other celebrities who share vulgar and potentially inaccurate information about the rapper’s relationship with Trump.

Mike Epps Shaded Nicki Minaj After She Called Herself Trump’s ‘Number One Fan’
Epps’ joke about Minaj follows the “Barbie Tingz” performer’s declaration that she is Trump’s “number one fan” during an event in Washington.
According to a previous report from The Blast, Minaj lauded the POTUS and said that the hate she’s received since announcing her support for him only makes her want to align herself with him more.
Minaj also came for the media and community members, saying, “And you know, the smear campaigns, it’s not going to work.”
Weeks earlier, Minaj stunned audiences when she showed up at a Turning Point USA meeting with Erika Kirk and declared her “utmost respect and admiration” for Trump.

“He has, I don’t know if he even knows this, but he’s given so many people hope that there’s a chance to beat the bad guys and to win and to do it with your head held high and your integrity intact. He’s from Queens, New York, like me,” she said.
Minaj Can’t Handle The ‘Bullying’ Of Trump

In an interview with Katie Miller, according to Fox News, Minaj also shared that part of her allegiance to Trump stems from the severe “bullying” he’s endured by the public.
“Religious freedom is something that’s very important to me,” she said. “But if I’m being honest, President Trump … because when I saw how he was being treated over and over and over, I just couldn’t handle it.”
“I felt that same, you know, a lot of that bullying in this man’s campaign, and all of the lying. I felt that that had been done to me for so many years, and I was watching it in real time happen to someone else, and I didn’t think he deserved it. And it made me think, I can’t do this anymore,” she added.

Minaj Sparred With Don Lemon

In addition to Epps, Minaj recently drew the ire of former CNN anchor Don Lemon, who slammed the rapper as an “ignorant … bigot” who doesn’t like Black people, according to The Blast.
His comments came after Minaj hurled a homophobic slur at Lemon online, which she doubled down on during a separate moment. Her statement was in response to Lemon’s independent reporting during the recent ICE protests in Minneapolis.
“Nicki Minaj will do anything that is expedient for her politically,” Lemon said. “And again, she’s ignorant; she doesn’t know what she’s talking about, and she’s always weighing in on things she doesn’t know about. Nicki Minaj should just sit the f-ck down.”

Jill Zarin Stunned Over Sudden Firing From E! Over Halftime Show Opinion

Blindsided By Sudden E! Firing Over SB Halftime Take
Published
Jill Zarin is struggling to process her sudden firing from E!’s upcoming reunion series “The Golden Life” and TMZ has learned she feels blindsided by the fallout.
In case you didn’t know … Blink49 Studios cut ties with Jill Tuesday following her posting — then deleting — an Instagram video Sunday, criticizing Bad Bunny‘s Super Bowl Halftime Show. The comments, later reposted on X, sparked backlash and ultimately led to her firing from the show.

Sources familiar with the situation tell TMZ … Jill believes she was punished for expressing an opinion, while other Housewives have said or done far worse without facing similar consequences. People close to Jill have told us they strongly dispute accusations that her comments were insensitive, insisting anyone who personally knows her would say that characterization is unfair.
According to our sources, Jill feels her firing is very premature and is especially hurt because she was the driving force behind reuniting the original ‘RHONY’ women and helping get the show greenlit at E!, only to feel pushed aside once controversy erupted.
Those who’ve spoken with Jill since the firing say she’s confused by what she views as cancel culture, explaining she quickly deleted the post after realizing she misspoke. After rewatching the performance, she better understood its cultural importance and felt terrible … which is why the video came down so fast.
We’re told Jill is upset people interpreted her remarks as targeting a broader group, and sources call the situation unfortunate. We’re told she doesn’t need the show financially and only signed on to have fun and bring the OG women back together.
Another source close to Jill says she’s bummed producers didn’t use the teachable moment as an opportunity on the show, suggesting the women could’ve addressed the matter on camera with her.
We’ve reached out to reps for Jill … so far, no word back.

“It’s because he’s too drunk to remember the words to his own songs,” Shelton continued. “Drunk and high. Put that on YouTube. Put it on your Instagram.”
Shelton’s jabs at Bryan are par for the course, according to TV Insider, which shared that “The Voice” alum made a similar comment about Bryan’s music during his “Back To The Honky Tonk Tour” in 2023. Bad Bunny’s Halftime Performance Left the Alternative MAGA Show in the Dust
As the Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots took the national spotlight last night, as did two different halftime shows. This year, Bad Bunny was the headliner behind the NFL’s annual extravaganza while elsewhere, Turning Point USA’s so-dubbed All-American Halftime Show got underway with a slew of entertainers, including Kid Rock, Brantley Gilbert, Lee Brice and Gabby Barrett. We know that the big game ended with a score of 29 to 13, with the Seahawks taking the sought-after trophy back to the Pacific Northwest, but how did the numbers stack up between the dueling artists?
With a singular stage that featured a catwalk and a spread-out audience surrounding it, the Turning Point USA show saw its performers dressed in blue suits, cowboy hats and the like, while a nearly unrecognizable Kid Rock closed it out. Meanwhile, on NBC, Bad Bunny transported audiences to Puerto Rico in a performance that captured the many cultures that make up the United States. Joining him at one point in a duet was Lady Gaga, while a happy couple got married in the middle of Super Bowl halftime madness, all to get his message of love across.
With the numbers finally beginning to roll in, we can see a clear-cut case of whom the halftime show victor was. An early report revealed that the off-shoot, which ended later than its primetime network equivalent, snagged somewhere around 5 million viewers on Turning Point USA’s YouTube during its live release. In the time since, the figures have shot up to 6.1 million, with folks turning to the online platform to see what they missed during the big game. Concurrently, Bad Bunny’s halftime performance was groundbreaking in more ways than one, as the Grammy recipient raked in a staggering 128, which falls just short of the previous record held by last year’s entertainer, Kendrick Lamar. Additionally, Bad Bunny’s performance has also become the most-watched halftime show in Spanish-language television history, raking in 4.8 million on Telemundo alone.
Who Else Performed at Super Bowl LX?
On top of the feuding halftime shows, audiences were treated to a handful of other musical delicacies, courtesy of some of the biggest names in the industry. Stepping out with an acoustic guitar and a well-tailored suit, multi-Grammy and Emmy-winning musician Brandi Carlile tuned up to play a rendition of “America the Beautiful,” while Coco Jones channeled Whitney Houston’s iconic Super Bowl XXV look while singing “Lift Every Voice and Sing.” Additionally, Charlie Puth took center stage to deliver his rendition of the National Anthem, and Green Day opened the event with numerous hits from over their decades-long career. While some may have been waiting for the California legends to toss in some political overtones, they wrapped up the show without a peep.

Days of our Lives TWIST: EJ Embraces His Dark Side – Will Cat Become His Ruthless Partner?
Days of Our Lives reveals EJ DiMera (Dan Feuerriegel) inherits the family patriarch position when he slides Stefano DiMera‘s (Joseph Mascolo) Phoenix ring onto his finger. We could see a big twist where EJ goes dark and claims his very own “Queen of the Night,” who may be Cat Greene (AnnaLynne McCord).
EJ has not been doing well lately. He has lost Belle Black (Martha Madison) and Johnny DiMera (Carson Boatman). And now his father, Stefano, is confirmed dead. This news might push EJ to an extremely dark place. Let’s dive in and talk about Cat and EJ’s possible future.
EJ DiMera in a Bad Place on Days of Our Lives
The transition from late 2025 into early 2026 has been difficult for EJ, largely due to his own actions and decisions. He is fresh off being kidnapped by Peter Blake (Jason Brooks), who was apparently conspiring with Vivian Alamain (Louise Sorel), even though Dimitri von Leuschner DiMera (Peter Porte) is taking the fall for it.
Furthermore, Johnny has rejected his father again. And Kristen DiMera (Stacy Haiduk) is feuding with EJ. Gwen Rizczech (Emily O’Brien) has been sloppy, putting the finances for the secret lab at risk with her scheme involving DVL. While EJ is eager to resurrect the “woman in the tube,” Gwen’s interference is a growing problem.
To make matters worse, EJ is still reeling from the confirmation that the bones in the crypt were indeed Stefano’s remains. Neither Belle nor Sami Brady (Alison Sweeney) will give EJ a second chance. And his daughter, Sydney DiMera (Avery and Cade Seger), is far away in Italy.
EJ DiMera Inherits the Iconic Phoenix Ring and Stefano’s Dark Legacy on DOOL
We are about to see an EJ with nothing left to lose, returning to his villainous roots. He may drag Cat along with him, whether she is a willing participant or not. This shift begins this week as EJ, Tony DiMera (Thaao Penghlis), Chad DiMera (Billy Flynn), Theo, and Kristen head back to the crypt to inter Stefano’s ashes and put him to rest once and for all.
This is a stressful moment for the family, as it marks the first time EJ and Tony have been back to the crypt since Peter tried to kill them all with sarin gas. Each of Stefano’s offspring and grandchildren is mourning in their own way, but EJ is particularly rocked by a revelation from Dr. Wilhelm Rolf (Richard Wharton).
Currently, the position of head of the DiMera family is up for grabs. Although EJ is not the oldest, Tony has made it clear he wants nothing to do with DiMera Enterprises. After reclaiming the company from the Kiriakises, Tony left town with his beloved Anna DiMera (Leann Hunley), leaving the business in Theo’s hands.
Johnny is currently serving as interim CEO while Theo recovers from a head injury inflicted by Peter. While EJ and Rita convinced Johnny to step in, that arrangement is ending soon. Johnny promised his wife, Chanel Dupree (Raven Bowens), that he would only help until Theo recovered before returning to work at Titan.
Dr. Wilhelm Rolf Anoints EJ as the New Patriarch of the DiMera Family on Days of our Lives
EJ has also been fighting with Kristen, who blames him for the incident where Rachel Black (Alice Halsey) shot him, leading to the child being sent to Bayview. When Dr. Rolf approaches EJ after they inter Stefano’s remains, EJ is at his lowest point.
After the others leave, Rolf reveals that Stefano assigned him one last task: to personally hand the iconic Phoenix ring to EJ. This gesture confirms that Stefano has anointed EJ as his heir and the new head of the family. This message could be the sign EJ needs to fully embrace his dark side once again.
Days of Our Lives spoilers indicate that Gwen notices a shift in EJ immediately after he slides the ring onto his finger. This raises the question: where does Cat Greene fit into his new world order? Cat was previously falling for Chad. however, to maintain custody of his children, Chad had to grant Jack Deveraux (Matthew Ashford) and Jennifer Horton (Melissa Reeves) summer visitation rights.
To appease Thomas DiMera (Christopher Cary), Chad included a “no Cat” clause in their legal custody arrangement. After a talk with Tony, Chad decides to move Thomas and Charlotte DiMera (Olivia & Oakley Rondou) to Arizona for a while.

A New Obsession: EJ DiMera and Cat Greene’s Valentine’s Day Date on Days of our Lives
With Chad out of the picture, EJ asks Cat out to dinner just as Valentine’s Day arrives in Salem. EJ and Cat previously shared a close moment, though it occurred after she drugged him to cover up her suspicious actions.
Susan Banks (Stacy Haiduk) caught them together and made it clear she does not want Cat near her “baby boy.” Susan has serious reservations and believes Cat is up to something. Despite these warnings, EJ and Cat are set to share a kiss soon, which could signal the start of a new obsession for EJ.
EJ has a history of intense fixations. When he was fixated on Sami, he blackmailed her into his bed to save Lucas Horton’s (Bryan Dattilo) life—an event that serves as Johnny’s origin story. He even kidnapped his own daughter, Sydney, to torment Sami.
When he moved his obsession to Nicole Walker (Arianne Zucker), his behavior remained manipulative. He was complicit in the secrets surrounding baby Jude, lying to Nicole about the baby’s paternity to keep her away from Eric Brady (Greg Vaughan). Much like Stefano, EJ gets fixated on one woman after another, doing terrible things to keep them in his life at any cost.
EJ & Cat the New Stefano & Marlena on DOOL?
Stefano’s longest-lasting obsession was making Marlena Evans (Deidre Hall) his “Queen of the Night.” Now that EJ is stepping into his father’s shoes, will a new obsession follow? Cat might be the one EJ decides should be his own Queen of the Night. What he doesn’t know is that Cat is working for the ISA as part of a multi-agency investigation. She is acting as his assistant as part of a plot with Rafe Hernandez (Galen Gering). Cat was snooping around the DiMera mansion when she drugged EJ. And she even tried to break into the secret lab by tricking her brother, Mark Greene (Jonah Robinson).
When EJ asks Cat to dinner, he has no idea she is targeting him—and she may not realize he is about to target her. With Chad leaving town, Cat may be vulnerable, leading to a spark and an upcoming kiss. While the writers previously dropped the “Queen of the Night” storyline by giving Marlena Lyme disease, this concept could see a revival with EJ.
Cat may be playing with fire. If EJ discovers her betrayal, he might feel justified in bending her to his will, much like Stefano did with Marlena. They already share a bond from when she read Wuthering Heights to him in Italy. EJ could even use that book as a mind-control tool, similar to Stefano’s use of Arabian Nights. Even if he finds out she is betraying him, it may only amplify his fixation. It will be interesting to see if Cat ends up in over her head, becoming the new Queen of the Night.

Jack Whitehall Jokes His Mom Is Banned From His Award Shows
Jack Whitehall says that his mother is no longer welcome at award shows he’s hosting after she pulled a red-carpet stunt that left him embarrassed in public.
Like her son, Hilary Whitehall is an actor in her own right. She is best known for her recurring role in the early ‘90s comedy-drama “The Good Guys.”
Hillary has also featured in her son’s BBC series “Bad Education,” among other roles, which makes her no stranger to the limelight. Still, the younger Whitehall says he’s not too keen to keep sharing the red carpet with her.

Jack Whitehall’s Parents Showed Up To The BRIT Awards Dressed As Kanye West And His Wife, Bianca

Whitehall appeared on a recent episode of “The Drew Barrymore Show,” where he discussed his relationship with his mother.
During the conversation, posted on the talk show’s official YouTube channel, he explained that he had decided to “ban” his mother from attending his awards shows.
This followed a red carpet stunt she and his father pulled at the 2025 BRIT Awards, which he was hosting.
The pair famously showed up to the red carpet for the event dressed similarly to Kanye West and his wife, Bianca Censori, at the 2025 Grammy Awards.
“These photographs went viral,” Whitehall said of his parents’ red-carpet snapshots. “I said, ‘You’re banned from coming to the show again if you’re going to pull a stunt like that.’”

The Mugler gown initially appeared as a deep-red cape draped over her, but when removed revealed a design that gave the illusion of very minimal covering.
“Yesterday, I woke up to a text from my mother,” Whitehall said. “It was a picture of the Chapell Roan dress, saying, ‘What date are the awards this year?’ I was like, ‘Absolutely not. Hilary, you are banned from coming to the show!”

In an October 2025 interview with The Times, Whitehall joked that his dad had painted a significantly different picture of what fatherhood entails.
“He very much led me to believe that the position of father was a ceremonial role like a provincial town mayor who would turn up for the grand opening, shake some hands, cut the cord, and then f-ck off until they need a car,” he said.

Jack Whitehall Explains His Love For Art And The Rock

Another area that Whitehall discussed with Barrymore was his love of art, as well as a deep appreciation for his “Jungle Cruise” co-star, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.
The British TV host recalled on “Drew Barrymore” how he had drawn caricatures of The Rock as a child, only for them to later reach Johnson himself.
“I stupidly told Emily Blunt that when I was a kid, I was obsessed with The Rock and that I’d found some old sketches that I’d done of him, and she showed him,” Whitehall explained.
Unfortunately, he said she omitted the fact that he had drawn them when he was younger.
“[She] didn’t say that I’d drawn them when I was a child,” he recalled. “So, he thought I was like a full-on stalker that had just been sketching him on set.”

The Comedian Returns To TV With His New Series ‘The Burbs’

Whitehall’s interview with Barrymore came after the release of his new series, “The Burbs,” on Peacock.
The show follows Whitehall and Keke Palmer as Rob and Samira, a married couple who move back to the former’s childhood home in a seemingly quiet suburb.
Speaking to Awards Radar in early February, Whitehall said that some of the themes on the show mirror his own life.
“I am a new parent and have experienced the pressures that puts on a couple,” he explained. “Those felt like very relatable themes.”

R-Rated, Punk Rock Horror Thriller Is As Violent As It Is Loud

If you know anybody who’s in a struggling band, or are in one yourself, and you get one of those offers that seems way too good to be true, you should force yourself to be the voice of reason, even if everybody in your orbit will hate you for being so cynical. Opportunities that require you to sign over your rights to your own intellectual property in a 365 deal are never what they’re cracked up to be, and you’ll spend the rest of your life trying to reclaim your art through expensive legal proceedings. Or, if you’re like the struggling punk band Suicide Disease in 2024’s Director’s Cut, you load up the van and drive out to the middle of nowhere because an eccentric videographer has offered to direct your debut music video for free.
In this case, you don’t really have to worry about copyright issues when all is said and done, because all signs suggest you won’t make it through the weekend alive anyway. As much as you’d like to get a cut-rate deal on an otherwise expensive endeavor, you have to think about what the offering party stands to gain from the exchange. You may not want to hear this, but sometimes a contract or written agreement is necessary if you want to protect your livelihood, and sometimes even your life.
A Punk Band With Nothing To Lose

Director’s Cut opens with a struggle that any somewhat serious musician will encounter at some point in their hobby or career. The band Suicide Disease has found their passion project in a state of flux, mostly due to lead vocalist Jay’s (Tyler Ivey) rotten attitude. Jay looks like the kind of guy who writes poems about pain in his Moleskine, but doesn’t have the vocabulary to sound like anything other than an angsty eighth grader. He also looks like he’s spent way more money on tattoos than vocal lessons.
When the rest of the band, John (Greg Poppa), Menace (Brandy Ochoa), and Juan (Louis Rocky Bacigalupo), confront him about the fate of the project, they immediately clash over how they should move forward. Jay wants to write more songs, while the band wants to play more shows. They can’t get better gigs until they have a larger catalog, but they’re too broke to take the current show on the road. That leaves them stuck in local band purgatory for the foreseeable future.

In a desperate move to keep the band together, Jay reveals that he’s received an offer to shoot a music video for free. The man making the offer, known only as Mister Director (Louis Lombardi), has a sizable social media following and a body of past work that suggests he might actually be legit. In a last-ditch effort to keep the band alive, they unanimously decide to haul their gear out to rural Pennsylvania, where Mister Director claims to have access to an abandoned mansion.
Honestly, There Are Way Worse Venues Out There
If you’ve ever spent any time inside a punk venue, you know you risk your life every time you step into the bathroom, and that the stage meant for five people and all of their equipment usually has the same footprint as a twin-sized bed. With that in mind, crashing at an empty mansion doesn’t seem like a bad gig, especially if somebody’s helping you out for free. This assumption is what pushes Director’s Cut into fully unhinged territory.

Almost immediately, Jay feels like something is off and has second thoughts about the whole project, which understandably irritates everyone else in the band since this was his idea in the first place. After exchanging pleasantries with Mister Director and his bruiser of an enforcer, Babs (Lucy Hart), the band commits to the shoot because they truly have nothing left to lose. At least that’s what they think.
Things take a hard left when Mister Director explains that he plans to film each band member individually before editing everything together in post-production. While each member waits their turn, nobody else is allowed on set. By the time the drums and guitars are supposedly finished, it becomes painfully clear that Suicide Disease is going to need some lineup changes if anyone is still breathing by the end of the weekend.

Pushing itself firmly into slasher territory, Director’s Cut gets violent fast, and once it does, there’s no turning back. Mister Director technically has a strong aesthetic vision for the video. Unfortunately for the band, that vision involves everyone staying at the mansion getting murdered in increasingly brutal fashion. Babs is a constant threat whether she’s on screen or lurking just outside the frame. Mister Director is wheelchair bound, so she handles most of the physical work, but the menacing bulge in her pants is what will probably unsettle you the most if I’m being honest.
Be Wary Of The Deals You Make
While Director’s Cut’s storyline is intentionally ridiculous and completely over the top, writer-director Don Capria based the concept on his own experience working as an artist manager for years. He wanted to address the risks young, naive artists take early in their careers when they’re presented with one-sided, exploitative deals. By pushing that idea to its most extreme conclusion, Capria turns Director’s Cut into a cautionary tale about the music industry and how easily it can chew you up if you’re careless about who you trust.

While it’s highly unlikely that you or any local band you know will be lured into a mansion and murdered by a psychotic director, it’s always in your best interest to question any deal that feels off. But if you’re able to hold your own and defend yourself, what happens in Director’s Cut, currently streaming for free on Tubi, isn’t nearly as bad as sitting through a local band showcase on a Tuesday night.
