Jenifer Lewis is looking back on one of the most personal chapters of her life. The “Black-ish” star recently opened up about her past struggles with sex addiction, revealing that intimacy became a coping mechanism during the height of her career as she searched for ways to come down from the adrenaline rush of performing.

Speaking candidly on Keke Palmer’s “Baby, This Is Keke Palmer” podcast, Lewis shared details about her journey, admitting she didn’t recognize her behavior as problematic at the time.

During the conversation, Lewis reflected on her younger years in the entertainment industry and the choices she made while navigating fame and success. “There’s no shame in my game,” she said before revealing she had been involved with dozens of men throughout her career.

Despite describing some of those experiences positively, Lewis acknowledged that her perspective has changed with age and self-reflection. Looking back, she said she wishes she had better understood her self-worth and viewed her body differently during that period of her life.

The Actress Says Sex Became A Way To Cope

Lewis explained that performing on stage often left her searching for a way to come down from the emotional high that came with audience applause and recognition.

According to the actress, many performers turn to various outlets after experiencing that rush, and for her, sex became the answer. “Sex was the drug,” Lewis admitted.

The Hollywood veteran said she didn’t initially recognize the behavior as an addiction because it felt normal within the environment she was living in at the time.

The AIDS Epidemic Changed Her Perspective

Lewis revealed that the AIDS crisis ultimately forced her to reevaluate her choices and consider deeper questions about her life. She recalled reaching a point where she realized there had to be more to life than chasing temporary fulfillment.

“I had known 200 people that died. And when I tell you they died like flies, they dropped like flies. I mean, you’d come home, and three would be dead. You come home, five would be dead on the phone machine,” Lewis told Palmer on the podcast. “It didn’t make sense because we were too young to experience that kind of death. You can deal with that when you’re wiser and older, and your older friends are dying. We were in our 20s for God’s sake.”

That realization sparked a personal journey focused on self-discovery, healing, and understanding what genuine love meant to her. Today, Lewis says she’s happier than ever and grateful for the life she’s built. “I feel better than I ever have. I’m so happy in my life,” she said.

Jenifer Lewis Has Been Open About Other Personal Struggles

Lewis faced another painful experience in 2020 when she was identified as one of several women allegedly defrauded by California gym manager Antonio Mariot Wilson. Federal prosecutors accused Wilson of convincing multiple women to invest money in fake business ventures after developing romantic relationships with them.

According to reports, Lewis lost approximately $50,000 after Wilson allegedly persuaded her to invest in what he claimed was a legitimate film-related project. The actress later said Wilson had researched her online before approaching her at a Los Angeles-area gym and eventually convincing her to trust him.

Wilson ultimately agreed to plead guilty to one count of wire fraud.
