During her set, Karol G took a moment to reflect on the significance of the night, reminding the crowd that her achievement was bigger than just a personal milestone. “It’s not just about me. It’s about my Latino community, my people,” Karol G told the sold-out crowd.

She also acknowledged the historic nature of the moment, becoming the first Latina woman to headline the festival after nearly three decades. “For my Latinos that have been struggling in this country, we stand for them,” she said. “Don’t feel fear.”

She continued, “We do this because we want everyone to feel welcome to our culture, to our roots, to our music. I just want everyone to feel proud of where you come from please. Feel proud.”

Leading up to the performance, Karol G had hinted that she wanted to go beyond surface-level statements, while still being mindful of the platform she holds.

“I know my team would kill me, but I am willing to say it. If I’m being honest with you, there are real boundaries and responsibilities I have to be mindful of,” she said. “A lot of people. People will say, ‘It’s better that you don’t.’ Because if you say the thing, maybe you become bait. Some people want to show their power.”

Still, her intention remained clear. “Through my music and this show, I want to continue building love and understanding for our community, a resilient, hardworking community that has contributed so much,” Karol G said. “I understand that countries have laws, but when things cross the line of basic human dignity, that’s when it becomes difficult to process.”

Despite arriving 30 minutes late, Karol G wasted no time owning the stage. She opened in a gold metallic bra-top and matching mini-skirt, running through a medley of hits including “Latina Forever,” “Un Gatito Me Llamó,” “Oki Doki,” “Tá OK,” “S91,” “Ivonny Bonita,” “Bandida Entrenada,” and “Gatúbela.”

“I am Carolina Giraldo from Medellin, Colombia, and today I am the first Latina woman to headline Coachella,” she said toward the end of her set. “And I’m very happy and very proud about this, but at the same time, it feels late. I just want to say that before me there were so many legendary Latina artists that gave me the opportunity to be here tonight.”

The set was packed with elaborate visuals, pyrotechnics, and multiple costume changes, turning the performance into a full-on production.

Karol G has also opened up about the pressure she faces behind the scenes when it comes to speaking out on political issues, particularly surrounding immigration enforcement.

In a recent interview, the singer revealed that she’s been repeatedly warned about the potential consequences of criticizing ICE, including threats to her career. “People will say, ‘It’s better you don’t,’” she shared. “Why? Because if you say the thing, maybe the next day you’ll get a call: ‘Hey, we are taking your visa away.’ You become bait, because some people want to show their power.”

According to Karol G, the concern isn’t just hypothetical; even those close to her have urged caution. “My team would kill me,” she admitted, referencing the risks tied to making a statement as direct as “ICE Out.”

Still, she made it clear she’s not backing down completely. “But I’m willing to say it,” she insisted.
